Currently, coffee fermentation is visually operated, which results in incomplete or excessive processes and coffees with undesirable characteristics. In front of it, pH and total soluble solids (TSS) have been shown to be good fermentation indicators, although this requires rapid, accurate, and chemical-free measurement techniques such as NIR spectroscopy. However, the complexity of the NIR spectra requires optimization steps in which variable selection techniques simplify profiles and subsequent models. This work tests a new covering array feature selection (CAFS) approach on NIR spectra to optimize prediction models in coffee samples during fermentation. Spectral profiles in the range 1100–2100 nm were extracted from coffee beans (Typica, Caturra, and Catimor varieties) raw and during fermentation (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h). Partial least-squares regressions (PLSR) were performed using full spectra using a five-fold cross-validation strategy for training and validation. The relevant wavelengths were then selected using the β coefficients, the important projection of variables (VIP), and the CAFS method. Finally, optimized models were performed using the relevant wavelengths and compared among these using their statistical metrics. The models performed using the selected variables (22–47) of CAFS showed the best performance in predicting pH (R2 = 0.825–0.903, RMSE = 0.096–0.158, RPD = 6.33–10.38) and TSS (R2 = 0.865–0.922, RMSE = 0.688–1.059, RPD = 0.94–1.45) compared to the other methods. These findings suggest that simple and efficient models could be performed and implemented in routine analysis due to the maximum coverage and minimum cardinality of CAFS.

This research work aims to identify the prevalent anchors in the professional accounting career using the Schein scale and to describe the prevalent anchors by defining the values, attitudes, aptitudes, skills, and interests. Career anchors are defined by the competence, motivation, and values a person has to perform a particular job in an organization and are present throughout their working life. When determining the soft and hard competencies of the professional profile, universities must consider the career anchors essential for graduates’ work performance. To determine which anchors dominate the competencies of the graduate profile, two universities in Latin America with a degree in accounting were selected. The study was organized in two stages: first, the operationalization of the research was conducted, including the description of the instrument through the application of 40 questions divided into Schein’s eight anchors. Samples were selected based on the convenience of the authors: one university in Peru and another in Colombia. The sample includes all students enrolled in the accounting major, and the data were coded and processed. In the second stage, data analysis was performed by grouping parameters, analysis of variance, explanatory analysis using a test for the best clustering algorithm, statistical testing, and discussion of the findings. The predominant anchors in the two universities are creativity, entrepreneurship, and lifestyle. The selected universities placed considerable emphasis on training future accountants with an innovative spirit, integrity, and social commitment without neglecting the professional requirements. This approach allows students to undertake challenges and new businesses in their field of work.

The rising interest in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is due to its high protein content and gluten-free condition; nonetheless, the presence of foreign bodies in quinoa processing facilities is an issue that must be addressed. As a result, convolutional neural networks have been adopted, mostly because of their data extraction capabilities, which had not been utilized before for this purpose. Consequently, the main objective of this work is to evaluate convolutional neural networks with a learning transfer for foreign bodies identification in quinoa samples. For experimentation, quinoa samples were collected and manually split into 17 classes: quinoa grains and 16 foreign bodies. Then, one thousand images were obtained from each class in RGB space and transformed into four different color spaces (L*a*b*, HSV, YCbCr, and Gray). Three convolutional neural networks (AlexNet, MobileNetv2, and DenseNet-201) were trained using the five color spaces, and the evaluation results were expressed in terms of accuracy and F-score. All the CNN approaches compared showed an F-score ranging from 98% to 99%; both color space and CNN structure were found to have significant effects on the F-score. Also, DenseNet-201 was the most robust architecture and, at the same time, the most time-consuming. These results evidence the capacity of CNN architectures to be used for the discrimination of foreign bodies in quinoa processing facilities.

This paper introduces a new approach to controlling Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) using a neural network controller based on a Model Predictive Control (MPC) process. We use a Hammerstein–Wiener (HW) model representing the real PSA process data. Then, we design an MPC-controlled model based on the HW model to maintain the bioethanol purity near 99% molar fraction. This work proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that captures the dynamics of the PSA model controlled by the MPC strategy. Both controllers are validated using the HW model of the PSA process, showing great performance and robustness against disturbances. The results show that we can follow the desired trajectory and attenuate disturbances, achieving the purity of bioethanol at a molar fraction value of 0.99 using the ANN based on the MPC strategy with 94% of fit in the control signal and a 97% fit in the purity signal, so we can conclude that our ANN can be used to attenuate disturbances and maintain purity in the PSA process.

This paper proposes an approach to fill in missing data from satellite images using data-intensive computing platforms. The proposed approach merges satellite imagery from diverse sources to reduce the impact of the holes in images that result from acquisition conditions: occlusion, the satellite trajectory, sunlight, among others. The amount of computation effort derived from the use of large high-resolution images is addressed by data-intensive computing techniques that assume an underlying cluster architecture. As a start, satellite data from the region of study are automatically downloaded; then, data from different sensors are corrected and merged to obtain an orthomosaic; finally, the orthomosaic is split into user-defined segments to fill in missing data, and filled segments are assembled to produce an orthomosaic with a reduced amount of missing data. As a proof of concept, the proposed data-intensive approach was implemented to study the concentration of chlorophyll at the Mexican oceans by merging data from MODIS-TERRA, MODIS-AQUA, VIIRS-SNPP, and VIIRS-JPSS-1 sensors. The results revealed that the proposed approach produces results that are similar to state-of-the-art approaches to estimate chlorophyll concentration but avoid memory overflow with large images. Visual and statistical comparison of the resulting images revealed that the proposed approach provides a more accurate estimation of chlorophyll concentration when compared to the mean of pixels method alone.

Uniform covering arrays are covering arrays in which every column has the same alphabet. In recent years, a number of methods to construct such arrays have been developed. Here, we review several of these methods organizing them into six classes: algebraic, recursive, exact, greedy, metaheuristic, and transformations. The objective of this paper is to highlight the strategy of some representative algorithms of each class. Most of the reviewed methods are accompanied by examples and/or pseudocodes. This paper ends with a discussion about the general strengths and weaknesses of each class of methods.

The classification of fresh fruits according to their visual ripeness is typically a subjective and tedious task; consequently, there is a growing interest in the use of non-contact techniques to automate this process. Machine learning techniques, such as artificial neural networks, support vector machines (SVMs), decision trees, and K-nearest neighbor algorithms, have been successfully applied for classification problems in the literature, particularly for images of fruit. However, the particularities of each classification problem make it difficult, if not impossible, to select a general technique that is applicable to all types of fruit. In this paper, the combinations of four machine learning techniques and three color spaces (RGB, HSV, and L*a*b*) were evaluated with regard to their ability to classify Cape gooseberry fruits. To this end, 925 Cape gooseberry fruit samples were collected, and each fruit was manually classified into one of seven different classes according to its level of ripeness. The color values of each fruit image in the three color spaces and their corresponding ripening stages were organized for training and validation following a fivefold cross-validation strategy in an iterative process repeated 100 times. According to the results, the classification of Cape gooseberry fruits by their ripeness level was sensitive to both the color space and the classification technique used. The models based on the L*a*b* color space and the SVM classifier showed the highest f-measure regardless of the color space, and the principal component analysis combination of color spaces improved the performance of the models at the expense of increased complexity.

In combinatorial optimization, the more complex a problem is, the more challenging it becomes, usually causing most research to focus on creating solvers for larger cases. However, real-life situations also contain small-sized instances that deserve a researcher’s attention. For example, within a web development context, a developer might face small combinatorial optimization cases that fall in the following situations to solve them: (1) the development of an ad hoc specialized strategy is not justified; (2) the developer could lack the time, or skills, to create the solution; (3) the efficiency of naive brute force strategies might be compromised due to the programming paradigm use. Similar situations in this context, combined with a recent increasing interest in optimization information from databases, open a research area to develop easy-to-implement strategies that compete with those naive approaches and do not require specialized knowledge. Therefore, this work revises Structured Query Language (SQL) approaches and proposes new methods to tackle combinatorial optimization problems such as the Portfolio Selection Problem, Maximum Clique Problem, and Graph Coloring Problem. The performance of the resulting queries is compared against naive approaches; its potential to extend to other optimization problems is studied. The presented examples demonstrate the simplicity and versatility of using a SQL approach to solve small optimization problem instances.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 affects the respiratory tract and is highly infectious. Those patients who knew that the disease could cause death or that their healing process is quite painful because of the symptoms and conditions developed extreme stress, anxiety, and depression, which aggravated the effects of the disease. Therefore, it is vital to conduct research to analyze these effects and generate self-help and support mechanisms during the disease process. This paper presents exploratory analysis related to stress, coping attitudes, emotional responses, and sources of support that were vital in patients affected by COVID-19; the focus of this study is the consideration of the spiritual factor, which may influence religious resilience that allows for a positive attitude and tenacity. To carry out this research, interviews were conducted with patients who had suffered from COVID-19 disease, and the collected information was processed using text-mining techniques using a two-phase methodology. The first phase is based on the Colaizzi method. Interview responses were coded through the search for patterns in the key phrases, and these codes were grouped, forming semantic relationships. In the second phase, natural-language processing algorithms (WordCloud, WordEmbedding, sentiment analysis of opinions) were used, summarizing the interviews in relevant factors of the patient’s experience during the disease. Spiritual resilience stood out the most of all key phrases of the code group tables. Likewise, words such as security, confidence, tranquility, and peace indicated that the patients took a positive attitude towards the symptoms and complications of the disease. Therefore, it is important to be the resilience to face a crisis process, and one of the factors that generated such resilience in COVID-19 patients was religious faith, which was expressed in the interviews using the factors of security, trust, promises of healing, tranquility, and the impossibility of discouragement. All this contributed to the positive attitude of the interviewees during the process of recovery from the disease.

This work evaluates near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometric tools for determining the superficial content of citral (SCCt) on microparticles. To perform this evaluation, using spray drying, citral was encapsulated in a matrix of dextrin using twelve combinations of citral:dextrin ratios (CDR) and inlet air temperatures (IAT). From each treatment, six samples were extracted, and their SCCt and NIR absorption spectral profiles were measured. Then, the spectral profiles, pretreated and randomly divided into modeling and validation datasets, were used to build the following prediction models: principal component analysis-multilinear regression (PCA-MLR), principal component analysis-artificial neural network (PCA-ANN), partial least squares regression (PLSR) and an artificial neural network (ANN). During the validation stage, the models showed R2 values from 0.73 to 0.96 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) range of [0.061–0.140]. Moreover, when the models were compared, the full and optimized ANN models showed the best fits. According to this study, NIR coupled with chemometric tools has the potential for application in determining SCCt on microparticles, particularly when using ANN models.

Computer-aided diagnosis is a research area of increasing interest in third-level pediatric hospital care. The effectiveness of surgical treatments improves with accurate and timely information, and machine learning techniques have been employed to assist practitioners in making decisions. In this context, the prediction of the discharge diagnosis of new incoming patients could make a difference for successful treatments and optimal resource use. In this paper, a computer-aided diagnosis system is proposed to provide statistical information on the discharge diagnosis of a new incoming patient, based on the historical records from previously treated patients. The proposed system was trained and tested using a dataset of 1196 records; the dataset was coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD10). Among the processing steps, relevant features for classification were selected using the sequential forward selection wrapper, and outliers were removed using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise. Ensembles of decision trees were trained with different strategies, and the highest classification accuracy was obtained with the extreme Gradient boosting algorithm. A 10-fold cross-validation strategy was employed for system evaluation, and performance comparison was performed in terms of accuracy and F-measure. Experimental results showed an average accuracy of 84.62%, and the resulting decision tree learned from the experience in samples allowed it to visualize suitable treatments related to the historical record of patients. According to computer simulations, the proposed classification approach using XGBoost provided higher classification performance than other ensemble approaches; the resulting decision tree can be employed to inform possible paths and risks according to previous experience learned by the system. Finally, the adaptive system may learn from new cases to increase decisions’ accuracy through incremental learning.

In marketing, there is a notable lack of models, which leads to the loss of potential customers since there is no feedback for improvement in the marketing strategy. In the face of the Internet revolution, this study used digital channels and interaction to achieve potential customer retention through a Funnel; this allowed a potential client to go through the acquisition, conversion, and retention stages. In addition, activities were developed that allow the potential user to become a retained client. Thus, considering the stages of a marketing strategy, a non-probabilistic sample was used, composed of a pre-test period with 1088 users and a post-test period with 1450 users. Overall, there was a significant improvement in the time a client remained observing the website per session, with a 20.6% efficiency; furthermore, there was a 36.25% efficiency increase of the user conversion process per session in the digital channel. Likewise, a 46.43% efficiency increase was measured in visits to the digital channel, which confirms that the proposed marketing strategy significantly improves previous marketing strategies. Therefore, it is concluded that the proposal based on the elements of insight aligned with the measurement proposed by Google Analytics Key Performance Indicators, which was used to test and observe the improvements to continue the feedback, taking advantage of the characteristic of the digital channel with its two-way participation.

Although knowledge of the microstructure of food of vegetal origin helps us to understand the behavior of food materials, the variability in the microstructural elements complicates this analysis. In this regard, the construction of learning models that represent the actual microstructures of the tissue is important to extract relevant information and advance in the comprehension of such behavior. Consequently, the objective of this research is to compare two machine learning techniques—Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBNN)—when used to enhance its microstructural analysis. Two main contributions can be highlighted from this research. First, a method is proposed to automatically analyze the microstructural elements of vegetal tissue; and second, a comparison was conducted to select a classifier to discriminate between tissue structures. For the comparison, a database of microstructural elements images was obtained from pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) micrographs. Two classifiers were implemented using CNN and RBNN, and statistical performance metrics were computed using a 5-fold cross-validation scheme. This process was repeated one hundred times with a random selection of images in each repetition. The comparison showed that the classifiers based on CNN produced a better fit, obtaining F1–score average of 89.42% in front of 83.83% for RBNN. In this study, the performance of classifiers based on CNN was significantly higher compared to those based on RBNN in the discrimination of microstructural elements of vegetable foods.

In this work, the use of expert systems and hyperspectral imaging in the determination of coffee rust infection was evaluated. Three classifiers were trained using spectral profiles from different stages of infection, and the classifier based on a support vector machine provided the best performance. When this classifier was compared to visual analysis, statistically significant differences were observed, and the highest sensitivity of the selected classifier was found at early stages of infection.

Software test suites based on the concept of interaction testing are very useful for testing software components in an economical way. Test suites of this kind may be created using mathematical objects called covering arrays. A covering array, denoted by CA(N; t, k, v), is an N × k array over [Formula: see text] with the property that every N × t sub-array covers all t-tuples of [Formula: see text] at least once. Covering arrays can be used to test systems in which failures occur as a result of interactions among components or subsystems. They are often used in areas such as hardware Trojan detection, software testing, and network design. Because system testing is expensive, it is critical to reduce the amount of testing required. This paper addresses the Optimal Shortening of Covering ARrays (OSCAR) problem, an optimization problem whose objective is to construct, from an existing covering array matrix of uniform level, an array with dimensions of (N - δ) × (k - Δ) such that the number of missing t-tuples is minimized. Two applications of the OSCAR problem are (a) to produce smaller covering arrays from larger ones and (b) to obtain quasi-covering arrays (covering arrays in which the number of missing t-tuples is small) to be used as input to a meta-heuristic algorithm that produces covering arrays. In addition, it is proven that the OSCAR problem is NP-complete, and twelve different algorithms are proposed to solve it. An experiment was performed on 62 problem instances, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of solving the OSCAR problem to facilitate the construction of new covering arrays.

The objective of this research was to develop a methodology for optimizing multilayer-perceptron-type neural networks by evaluating the effects of three neural architecture parameters, namely, number of hidden layers (HL), neurons per hidden layer (NHL), and activation function type (AF), on the sum of squares error (SSE). The data for the study were obtained from quality parameters (physicochemical and microbiological) of milk samples. Architectures or combinations were organized in groups (G1, G2, and G3) generated upon interspersing one, two, and three layers. Within each group, the networks had three neurons in the input layer, six neurons in the output layer, three to twenty-seven NHL, and three AF (tan-sig, log-sig, and linear) types. The number of architectures was determined using three factorial-type experimental designs, which reached 63, 2 187, and 50 049 combinations for G1, G2 and G3, respectively. Using MATLAB 2015a, a logical sequence was designed and implemented for constructing, training, and evaluating multilayer-perceptron-type neural networks using parallel computing techniques. The results show that HL and NHL have a statistically relevant effect on SSE, and from two hidden layers, AF also has a significant effect; thus, both AF and NHL can be evaluated to determine the optimal combination per group. Moreover, in the three study groups, it is observed that there is an inverse relationship between the number of processors and the total optimization time.
