1. A case of iatrogenic linear streaky hypopigmentation mimicking vitiligo

Abstract

Intralesional corticosteroid (I/L CS) is a frequently used therapy in dermatology that can seldom cause linear hypopigmentation. Very rarely this linear hypopigmentation may present as multiple streaks. The most widely accepted mechanism for this side effect is the lymphatic spread of CS suspension. Here, we report a case of multiple linear streaky hypopigmentation after I/L CS mimicking vitiligo along with a review of the literature and discuss measures to minimize this iatrogenic side effect. A 32-year-old lady developed the hypopigmented atrophic patch and multiple linear streaks of hypopigmentation over the right leg after receiving I/L CS. She responded dramatically to topical tacrolimus. To prevent this side effect, the lesion may be compressed for a few minutes after I/L CS injection to prevent its venolymphatic spread. This condition requires stoppage of further I/L CS and proper counseling and reassurance to the patient.

Abstract

This study tests (a) whether participation and leadership styles vary in different forms of community forestry, and (b) whether the leaders’ styles, members’ psychosocial closeness with the leader, and leaders’ attributes influence people's participation. In a survey of 397 members from 17 forest protection units in three states of eastern India, participation was found to be significantly higher in indigenous community forest management than in crafted and joint forest management. In indigenous and crafted forest institutions, leaders were predominantly participative, which was not the case in joint forest management.Irrespective of forest institutions, participative and charismatic leaders enhanced participation whereas authoritarian and manipulative leaders dampened it. Members perceived more psycho–social closeness to participative and charismatic leaders, and such leaders possessed more personal virtues than their authoritarian and manipulative counterparts.

Abstract

This study tests whether participation and values favouring forest protection vary in different forms of community forestry, and whether members' identification with institutional values and forest central ity determines people's participation. Three hundred ninety seven members from 17 forest institutions and their leaders were interviewed. Participation was significantly higher in indigenous community forest management than in crafted community forest management and joint forest management. Values of 'livelihood security from forest', 'sacrificing the present benefit', and 'avoidance of free riding' emerged as important for indigenous and crafted community forest management compared to joint forest management. Members' identification with institutional values and centrality of the forest to the lives of members in forest institutions were higher in indigenous and crafted community forest manage ment than in joint forest management. Irrespective of forest institutions, the higher the value congru ence and centrality of the forest, the higher was people's participation.

Abstract

What is social reality? How does one know social reality? How do social sciences construct social reality? Is there any gap between the way social reality exists and the way it is constructed in the social sciences? If there are such gaps, then how can they be accounted for and overcome in the process of scientific understanding? These are some of the questions which were discussed during an interdisciplinary seminar on ‘Perspectives on Perception and Understanding of Social Reality'held in April, 1983, at the Centre of Advanced Study in Psychology, University of Allahabad. The seminar participants were from various disciplines, such as, psychology, sociology, history and literature. This volume primarily constitutes revised form of some selected papers which were initially presented in the seminar. Social Scientists who face the growing challange of scientific understanding of the social reality should find the book particularly useful.
