Abstract Background Nutritional factors are suggested to influence the incidence and severity of glandular gastric disease (GGD) in horses. Objectives To retrospectively assess whether dietary fermentable carbohydrates increase the severity of GGD and to prospectively evaluate whether the partial substitution of concentrates by dehydrated alfalfa would decrease GGD severity scores. Animals In total, 82 trotters from 4 training centers exercised ≥5 days/week. Methods Multicenter retrospective observational study, and prospective 2‐arm randomized trial. Glandular mucosae were observed by gastroscopy and scored (0‐4 severity scale) at day 0 (D0). Biochemical composition of the diet fed was compared between ulcerated and nonulcerated groups. After D0, horses either received the same diet (control, n = 41) or pelleted dehydrated alfalfa substituting 50% concentrates (alfalfa, n = 41). Glandular scores were recorded in both groups after 21 (D21) and 42 days (D42). The first end point was a successful outcome, defined as a horse with a glandular score of 2 to 4 on D0, decreasing to a score of 0 to 1 on days 21 or 42. Results Horses scored 0 to 1 at D0 ingested more (P = .01) soluble sugars from concentrates than those scored 2 to 4 before D0 (77.5 g/kg BW; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 71.1‐84.0, vs 59.1 g/kg BW; 95% CI: 48.0‐70.3), whereas starch intake did not differ between groups (P = .24). Among horses scored 2 to 4 at D0, fewer were scored 2 to 4 in the alfalfa group (1 out of 6) compared with the control group (6 out of 6) at D42 (P = .02). Clinical success was 47.7 times more likely in horses fed alfalfa compared with horses in the control group (95% CI: 1.6‐1422.8). Conclusion and Clinical Importance Relationships were found between diet composition and integrity of the glandular mucosa. Feeding pelleted dehydrated alfalfa could help to reduce the incidence and severity of GGD.

Purpose: Calls for dialectical learning process model development in learning organizations have largely gone unheeded, thereby limiting conceptual understanding and application in the field. This paper aims to unify learning organization theory with a new understanding of Hegelian dialectics to trace the development of the storytelling learning organization. The "storytelling learning organization" is a conceptual framework presented along with criteria to evaluate different kinds of dialectical development claims in "storytelling learning organization" work that are bona fide instances of one or another dialectical ontology ranging from Marxian, to Hegelian, to Brierian, to Žižekian. Design/methodology/approach: Ontological evaluation and critique of a variety of "storytelling learning organization" practices posit different dialectical ontology and consequences for theory and practice. Through a case example of business process reengineering (BPR) in a "public research university (PRU)", the storytelling of "schooling" versus "education" ideas and practices, in a place, in a period and in material ways of mattering, never achieves synthesis. The dialectical development of resistance to implementation evolves toward transcendence into irreducible oppositions of ontological incompleteness -- the essence of a learning organization. Findings: This ontological analysis focuses on the use of ideas and practices by opposing storytelling agents and actants to uncover a learning organization's dialectical development in its own storytelling, its narrative and counter-narrative enactments, and its attempts to unpack contradictions. The PRU under study has gone through a series of financial crises, and its learning organization responses were downsizing staff and faculty positions and implementing BPR in ways that worsened the situation. The process resulted in staff and faculty leaving even before the reorganization was completed and enrollment dropped dramatically, in great part due to the negative press and the excessive standardization of the curriculum that accompanies "schooling" displacing acts of "education" practices and ideations. Meanwhile, the administrators are still trying to manage the narrative and control it so as to forestall additional attrition. Originality/value: The theory of "storytelling learning organization" is original. The question answered here has practical value because institutions have choices to make concerning the kind of dialectical narrative and counter-narrative development that is cultivated, and there are options for transforming or moving to an alternative narrative and counter-narrative development process. The analysis of the case also illustrates a pattern of intervention that is, on the one hand, unsuccessful in developing "higher" education and, on the other hand, successful in shutting down the efficacy of a PRU by centrist use of reengineering to accomplish more schooling, more downsizing and more installation of "academic capitalism" ideas and practices.

Here the authors show that chemotherapy induces LD synthesis via acyltransferase LPCAT2 which, in turn, promotes chemoresistance via LD accumulation both in vitro and in vivo by blocking chemotherapy-induced ER stress.

The main motivation for organizations to embark upon continuous improvement (CI) efforts such as Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has been traditionally to improve key measures of performance (e.g. cost, speed, etc.). However, most efforts have been confronted with significant implementation failures, primarily due to the lack of proper consideration for the organizational and people-related aspects of change. Even though the need to address these key aspects has been mentioned in the literature, there appears to be theoretical and empirical gaps on both, the structural and implementation aspects of how Change Management (CM)/Organization Development (OD) are integrated into CI efforts. This paper will share the experience of how one mature organization attempted to design and deploy a framework that integrated LSS and CM/OD. Short bowel syndrome patients (SBS) receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) often have dyslipidaemia and can develop intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). These patients demonstrate increased cholesterol synthesis and hepatic lipogenesis. These lipid disturbances may be due to a decreased concentration of the bile acid pool or malabsorption. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of bile acid administration on lipid synthesis in patients with SBS. The 24 h fractional synthesis rate (FSR) of cholesterol and triglycerides was measured by the isotopic method (deuterated water) before and after 4 months of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment (20 mg/kg/day). Five short bowel patients (age: 53.4 ± 19.2 years) who had normal liver function and lipid plasmatic profiles received 1920 ± 300 ml of PN for 151 ± 74 days (mean PN energy intake was 27.0 ± 6.0 kcal/kg body weight, composed with 3.87 ± 1.38 g/kg of carbohydrate, 0.72 ± 0.25 g/kg of fat and 1.10 ± 0.23 g/kg of amino acids). Plasma metabolites, liver enzymes, 7-α-OH-cholesterol and steatosis levels were also evaluated before and after treatment. Student's t-tests were performed, and the results were expressed in means (±SD). After treatment, decreases in the absolute values of cholesterol synthesis (0.31 ± 0.12 mmol L−1 to 0.24 ± 0.11 mmol L−1; p < 0.05), FSR of cholesterol (31.6 ± 4.7% to 26.4 ± 4.7%; p = 0.06) and FSR of triglycerides (12.8 ± 5.8% to 9.2 ± 5.5%; p < 0.01) were observed. Cholesterol and alanine aminotransferase concentrations also decreased (ALT) (p < 0.05). The absolute values of triglyceride synthesis and triglyceride concentrations remained unchanged. In SBS patients, UDCA decreases the hepatic synthesis of triglycerides and cholesterol. These results suggest that UDCA could prevent the onset of the IFALD. • Patients with SBS receiving PN have increased cholesterol synthesis and hepatic lipogenesis. • A daily oral intake of UDCA (20 mg/kg/day) reduces the endogenous synthesis of both cholesterol and triglycerides. • UDCA could improve lipid metabolism in patients with chronic intestinal failure and prevent cholestasis. Cantillon originally described entrepreneurship as a practical and functional process of value creation to capture a concrete imagination of the future. Management scholars have identified the two main failure modes of entrepreneurship as an inadequate understanding of the external environment and insufficient capabilities for internal management of the venture. However, there has been limited transfer of research-based knowledge into practice to decrease the high failure rate of new ventures. This study documents a new application of SEAM strategic venturing to simultaneously address both failure modes, as documented in two extended entrepreneurial cases from France and America.
