The relationship between competition and anxiety in adult athletes who competed in a 5K running race was determined. Runners were administered both state and trait measures before and after the race, and were divided into sucessful and unsuccessful runners. The results showed that successful runners had a decreased level of post-race anxiety relative to both pre-race state anxiety and trait anxiety. No change in anxiety level was detected in unsuccessful runners., Most of the work in the area of sports and anxiety has focused on the effects of stress on performance.
