We compute the standard Euclidean window of the hadronic vacuum polarization using multiple independent blinded analyses. We improve the continuum and infinite-volume extrapolations of the dominant quark-connected light-quark isospin-symmetric contribution and address additional subleading systematic effects from sea-charm quarks and residual chiral-symmetry breaking from first principles. We find aμW=235.56(65)(50)×10-10, which is in 3.8σ tension with the recently published dispersive result of aμW=229.4(1.4)×10-10 [G. Colangelo, A. X. El-Khadra, M. Hoferichter, A. Keshavarzi, C. Lehner, P. Stoffer, and T. Teubner, Phys. Lett. B 833, 137313 (2022)PYLBAJ0370-269310.1016/j.physletb.2022.137313] and in agreement with other recent lattice determinations. We also provide a result for the standard short-distance window. The results reported here are unchanged compared to our presentation at the Edinburgh workshop of the g-2 Theory Initiative in 2022 [C. Background: Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a poxvirus that manifests as firm, smooth, dome-shaped, umbilicated, flesh-colored papules. In adults, MC is commonly spread by sexual contact, and is self-limited in patients with intact immune systems but more widely distributed and difficult to treat in immunocompromised persons. We analyzed cases of adult MC for associations with immunosuppression, lifestyle risk factors, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)., Methods: Using the All of Us Research Program database, adults with MC were identified and matched with controls 1:10 based on demographic factors. Comorbidities, lifestyle risk factors, and medication exposures were analyzed. Odds ratios were calculated using logistic regression., Results: Our analysis included 146 cases of adults with MC and 1460 demographic-matched controls. Patients with MC were 48 years old on average, 59% female, and majority White (82.5%). Controls were similar for all demographic features. Adults with MC were more likely to have syphilis (odds ratio (OR) 16; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.57-99.5), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (OR 9.54; 95% CI 3.95-23.0), chlamydia (OR 6.24; 95% CI 2.38-16.4), condyloma acuminata (OR 13.9; 95% CI 7.36-26.2), genital herpes (OR 4.13; 95% CI 1.87-9.15), or atopic dermatitis (AD) (OR 2.85; 95% CI 1.5-5.4) (all p < .01). There were no differences in prevalence of other comorbidities, lifestyle risk factors, nor medication exposures (all p > .05)., Conclusions: We showed that adult MC is associated with AD and STIs, including HIV, chlamydia, condyloma acuminata, genital herpes, and syphilis. Background: Pityriasis versicolor (PV), a cutaneous fungal infection, most commonly affects adolescents and young adults and is associated with hyperhidrosis and humid weather. Understanding other factors associated with PV might help improve diagnostic and treatment practices., Objectives: PV's associations with patient demographics, comorbidities and medication exposures were assessed using the All of Us Database, a large, diverse, national database from the United States., Methods: A case-control study with multivariable analysis was performed., Results: We identified 456 PV case-patients and 1368 control-patients. PV case-patients (vs. control-patients) were younger (median age [years] (standard deviation): 48.7 (15.4) vs. 61.9 (15.5); OR: 0.95, CI: 0.94-0.96) and more likely to be men versus women (42.8% vs. 33.9%, OR: 1.45, CI: 1.16-1.79) and Black (19.5% vs. 15.8%, OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02-1.80) or Asian (4.6% vs. 2.7%, OR: 1.86, CI: 1.07-3.24) versus White. PV case-patients more frequently had acne (5.3% vs. ≤1.5%, OR: 5.37, CI: 2.76-10.48) and less frequently had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) (14.7% vs. 24.7%, OR: 0.52, CI: 0.39-0.70) and hypothyroidism (OR: 10.3% vs. 16.4%, OR: 0.59, CI: 0.42-0.82). In multivariable analysis, PV odds were significantly higher in those with acne and lower in those with T2DM, older age and female sex., Conclusions: Our results may be used as a basis for future studies evaluating whether acne treatment may decrease PV risk. Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair caused by dermatophyte molds, that most often affects children and may also affect adults. Previous estimates suggest that between 3% and 11% of all tinea capitis cases worldwide occur in adults, although updated epidemiological studies are needed to reassess the prevalence of tinea capitis in adult populations specifically. Postmenopausal adult women are most often affected by tinea capitis, with African American or Black women particularly at risk. Adults who experience crowded living conditions, who live in close proximity to animals, who are immunosuppressed, and/or who live in households with affected children are at greatest risk of infection. Tinea capitis can be non-inflammatory or inflammatory in nature, and the subtype affects the extent and severity of clinical symptoms. Fungal culture and potassium hydroxide preparations are the most commonly used diagnostic tools. Trichoscopy, defined as dermoscopic imaging of the scalp and hair, is a useful adjunct to the physical examination. The mainstay of therapy is oral antifungal therapy, and topical therapy alone is not recommended. Since tinea capitis infection is uncommon in adults, there are no widely accepted treatment guidelines. Rather, the same medications used for tinea capitis infection among children are recommended for adults at varying doses, including griseofulvin, and terbinafine, and, less commonly, itraconazole and fluconazole. The prognosis for tinea capitis in adults is typically excellent when prompt and adequate treatment is administered; however, delayed diagnosis or inadequate treatment can result in scarring alopecia. Over the past decade, dermatophyte infections resistant to treatment with topical and oral antifungal agents have emerged. While tinea capitis infections resistant to antifungal therapy have been rarely reported to date, antifungal resistance is rising among superficial fungal infections in general, and antifungal stewardship is necessary to ensure that resistance to treatment does not develop among dermatophytes that cause tinea capitis.

Background: Nail excisions are indicated for onychocryptosis and nail spicules. They are technically demanding and require a refined skill set. We aimed to characterize practice patterns of US providers performing nail excisions., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of Medicare provider use and payment data, part D, for all claims of partial or complete nail/nail matrix excision with/without nail plate removal/destruction (current procedural terminology code 11750). High performers were defined as providers performing annual nail excisions 2 standard deviations above the mean. We analyzed demographic risk factors for nail excision high performers, including practice location, years of experience, household median income, practice type, and provider gender. Statistical analysis was conducted in SAS v9.4, with values of P < .05 considered statistically significant., Results: Providers (n = 32,279) and high performers (n = 942) performed mean 34.7 and 173 nail excisions annually. Unsurprisingly, podiatrists constituted 99.7% of all nail excision performers. Providers in the South versus Midwest and Northeast were more often nail excision high performers (odds ratio [OR], 1.95; P < .0001, and OR, 1.46; P < .0001). Solo versus group practitioners were more likely, respectively, to be nail excision high performers (OR, 2.15; P < .0001). With linear regression analysis, for every 10-year increase in years of provider experience, there was an increase of 1.2 nail excisions annually per provider (P < .0001). For every $100,000 increase in household median income of practice location, there was a decrease of 9.9 nail excisions annually per provider., Conclusions: Southern podiatrists, podiatrists with more years of experience, solo practitioners, and those practicing in regions with lower household median incomes were more likely to perform higher numbers of nail excisions. Identifying performance trends among podiatrists can help podiatrists understand how their performance of nail excisions compares to other podiatrists across the country.

Dermatophytoses are fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that affect approximately 25% of the global population. Occlusive clothing, living in a hot humid environment, poor hygiene, proximity to animals, and crowded living conditions are important risk factors. Dermatophyte infections are named for the anatomic area they infect, and include tinea corporis, cruris, capitis, barbae, faciei, pedis, and manuum. Tinea incognito describes steroid-modified tinea. In some patients, especially those who are immunosuppressed or who have a history of corticosteroid use, dermatophyte infections may spread to involve extensive skin areas, and, in rare cases, may extend to the dermis and hair follicle. Over the past decade, dermatophytoses cases not responding to standard of care therapy have been increasingly reported. These cases are especially prevalent in the Indian subcontinent, and Trichophyton indotineae has been identified as the causative species, generating concern regarding resistance to available antifungal therapies. Antifungal-resistant dermatophyte infections have been recently recognized in the United States. Antifungal resistance is now a global health concern. When feasible, mycological confirmation before starting treatment is considered best practice. To curb antifungal-resistant infections, it is necessary for physicians to maintain a high index of suspicion for resistant dermatophyte infections coupled with antifungal stewardship efforts. Furthermore, by forging partnerships with federal agencies, state and local public health agencies, professional societies, and academic institutions, dermatologists can lead efforts to prevent the spread of antifungal-resistant dermatophytes., (© 2024. As the native regenerative potential of adult cardiac tissue is limited post-injury, stimulating endogenous repair mechanisms in the mammalian myocardium is a potential goal of regenerative medicine therapeutics. Injection of myocardial matrix hydrogels into the heart post-myocardial infarction (MI) has demonstrated increased cardiac muscle and promotion of pathways associated with cardiac development, suggesting potential promotion of cardiomyocyte turnover. In this study, the myocardial matrix hydrogel was shown to have native capability as an effective reactive oxygen species scavenger and protect against oxidative stress induced cell cycle inhibition in vitro. Encapsulation of cardiomyocytes demonstrated an enhanced turnover in in vitro studies, and in vivo assessments of myocardial matrix hydrogel treatment post-MI showed increased thymidine analog uptake in cardiomyocyte nuclei compared to saline controls. Overall, this study provides evidence that properties of the myocardial matrix material provide a microenvironment mitigating oxidative damage and supportive of cardiomyocytes undergoing DNA synthesis, toward possible DNA repair or cell cycle activation. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Loss of adult mammalian cardiomyocyte turnover is influenced by shifts in oxidative damage, which represents a potential mechanism for improving restoration of cardiac muscle after myocardial infarction (MI). Injection of a myocardial matrix hydrogel into the heart post-MI previously demonstrated increased cardiac muscle and promotion of pathways associated with cardiac development, suggesting potential in promoting proliferation of cardiomyocytes. In this study, the myocardial matrix hydrogel was shown to protect cells from oxidative stress and increase proliferation in vitro. In a rat MI model, greater presence of tissue free thiol content spared from oxidative damage, lesser mitochondrial superoxide content, and increased thymidine analog uptake in cardiomyocytes was found in matrix injected animals compared to saline controls. Capromorelin is a ghrelin-receptor agonist widely used as an appetite stimulant in dogs. Capromorelin disrupts glucose homeostasis in cats but information regarding its effects on canine glucose homeostasis is lacking. The study objective was to evaluate the effect of capromorelin on glucose homeostatic mechanisms in healthy dogs. Eight clinically healthy client-owned adult dogs were enrolled in this prospective, cross-over, placebo-controlled study. Dogs were randomized to receive capromorelin (Entyce, 3 mg/kg) or placebo, q24h for 3 d. A wk later, treatments were crossed over. Interstitial glucose (IG) concentrations were measured using a flash glucose monitoring system throughout. On d 1 of each treatment, blood glucose (BG), insulin, glucagon, glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP), and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) concentrations were measured before drug administration, then before and 30-120 min after feeding a glucose-rich diet (Ensure Plus, 21 kcal/kg). Data were analyzed as a 2-period crossover design using generalized least squares estimation. Capromorelin administration increased mean 48 h IG by10% and mean BG by 20% at 90 and 120 min post-prandially (P < 0.0001). Post-prandially, there was a time-by-treatment effect for insulin (P = 0.03) and GIP (P = 0.0002) because capromorelin doubled geometric mean insulin concentrations at 120 min and increased geometric mean GIP concentrations more rapidly than after placebo. There were no differences in glucagon or GLP-1 concentrations between treatment groups. The increase in post-prandial blood glucose was not the result of overt suppression of incretin hormone secretion. Suppressive effects of extracellular matrix (ECM) upon various cancers have been reported. Glioblastoma multiforme has poor prognosis and new therapies are desired. This work investigated the effects of a saline-soluble fraction of urinary bladder ECM (ECM-SF) upon glioma cells. Viability at 24 hours in 1, 5, or 10 mg/mL ECM-SF-spiked media was evaluated in primary glioma cells (0319, 1015, 1119), glioma cell lines (A172, T98G, U87MG, C6), and brain cell lines (HCN-2, HMC3). Viability universally decreased at 5 and 10 mg/mL with U87MG, HCN-2, and HCM3 being least sensitive. Apoptosis in 0319 and 1119 cells was confirmed via NucView 488. Bi-weekly intravenous injection of ECM-SF (120 mg/kg) for 10 weeks in Sprague-Dawley rats did not affect weight, temperature, complete blood count, or multi-organ histology ( N = 5). Intratumoral injection of ECM-SF (10 uL of 30 mg/mL) at weeks 2-4 post C6 inoculation in Wistar rats increased median survival from 24.5 to 51 days (hazard ratio for death 0.22) and decreased average tumor volume at time of death from 349 mm 3 to 90 mm 3 over 10 weeks ( N = 6). Mass spectrometry identified 2,562 protein species in ECM-SF, parent ECM, and originating tissue. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a flotation vest (FV) and water flow rate (WFR) on limb kinematics of dogs swimming against a current., Animals: 7 (1 male and 6 female) healthy adult Siberian Huskies., Procedures: Dogs were habituated to swim with and without an FV beside an investigator in a continuous-flow pool against WFRs up to 2.9 km/h. During each of 4 experimental sessions in a repeated-measures study, markers were wrapped around the right carpus and tarsus, and a video was recorded while each dog swam with or without an FV for about 2 minutes at each of 7 WFRs between 0 and 2.9 km/h when the WFR was incrementally decreased or increased. Motion tracking software was used to measure stroke excursion and frequency., Results: Stroke excursion varied more than frequency among all dogs and in response to changes in experimental conditions. The male dog and 1 female dog were unable to complete the study. For the remaining 5 dogs across all experimental conditions, mean tarsus excursion was 30% that of the carpus. Mean total excursion (sum of the excursion-frequency products for the carpus and tarsus) decreased when an FV was worn and increased with WFR by 69% and 19% when WFR was incrementally increased and decreased, respectively., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: In dogs, range of motion during swimming was greater for the carpus than tarsus, when an FV was not worn, and increased more with WFR when WFR was incrementally increased. Those factors should be considered during swimming-based rehabilitation.
