Detailed pressure, temperature, and velocity data were obtained for twin-fan configurations in-ground-effect and flow models to aid in predicting pressures and upwash forces on aircraft surfaces were developed. For the basic experiments, 49.5 mm-diameter jets were used, oriented normal to a simulated round plane, with pressurized, heated air providing a jet. The experimental data consisted of: (1) the effect of jet height and temperature on the ground, model, and upwash pressures, and temperatures, (2) the effect of simulated aircraft surfaces on the isolated flow field, (3) the jet-induced forces on a three-dimensional body with various strakes, (4) the effects of non-uniform coannular jets. For the uniform circular jets, temperature was varied from room temperature (24 C) to 232 C. Jet total pressure was varied between 9,300 Pascals and 31,500 Pascals. For the coannular jets, intended to represent turbofan engines, fan temperature was maintained at room temperature while core temperature was varied from room temperature to 437 C. Results are presented.

Utilizing the unique opportunity created by full scale hover testing of the twin-jet Grumman Design 698 VTOL aircraft in the NASA-Ames Hover Facility, a series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the effectivness of scale model testing in predicting full scale behavior. Interference forces were found to be sensitive to aircraft lower surface geometry, but when the geometry was modeled accurately the small scale results matched full scale forces guite well. The interference forces were found to be insensitive to core nozzle temperature and fan nozzle pressure ratio. The results clearly demonstrate that small scale models can be reliably utilized for aircraft and technology development when the appropriate sensitivities are recognized.

This paper is a summary of an analysis of the ground-effect characteristics of a large-scale twin-engine, tilt-nacelle V/STOL model. The analysis considers data from the flow field beneath the full-scale model, as well as small-scale model test data, and makes comparisons with jet-ground interactions predicted by a computer code. The data from the large-scale test comprise ground-plane surface temperatures, static pressure distribution and wall-jet total-pressure profiles, fuselage undersurface static pressures, and model forces and moments. The results indicate that the near-field flow is more complex than is indicated by either the small-scale uniform jet studies or the computer predictions. The far-field flow characteristics do show some similarity for these three cases.

The interaction of two vertically impinging incompressible jets is studied through the invention of physical flow models that approximate the behavior of colliding wall jets as the incident jets are brought closer together. The mechanism for upwash formation is studied and momentum models for the upwash sheet are postulated. An approximate method for computing the ground isobar pattern of jet and upwash deflection zones is presented and compared with test data. A method for computing the upwash impingement force in the absence of secondary induced flow effects is also presented and reasonably good agreement is achieved with experimental data for cylindrical fuselage shapes of circular and rectangular cross section.

Results of a series of in ground effect twin jet tests are presented along with flow models for closely spaced jets to help predict pressure and upwash forces on simulated aircraft surfaces. The isolated twin jet tests revealed unstable fountains over a range of spacings and jet heights, regions of below ambient pressure on the ground, and negative pressure differential in the upwash flow field. A separate computer code was developed for vertically oriented, incompressible jets. This model more accurately reflects fountain behavior without fully formed wall jets, and adequately predicts ground isobars, upwash dynamic pressure decay, and fountain lift force variation with height above ground.

The effect of nozzle spacing on ground interference forces was investigated for a two jet V/STOL aircraft design. The need for information on the effect of jet spacing arises because of the tradeoff between mechanical complexity, which calls for close spacing, and roll control moments, which call for wider spacing. The ground interference forces on a two jet V/STOL aircraft model were measured for a range of nozzle spacings. Interference forces showed a complicated behavior with nozzle spacing, fuselage geometry, and height above ground. For some conditions a slight change in nozzle spacing resulted in a fourfold change in the interference force from 3% to 12% of the basic jet thrust. An understanding of the observed aircraft force behavior was developed using detailed measurements of the upwash flow properties, along with force and pressure measurements on a series of two dimensional fuselage representations.
