This document presents the results of archaeological monitoring for a residential rehabilitation project. The project involved the replacement/installation of a gas line, sewer line, and water line in addition to the excavation of block fence footers, removal of topsoil to make room for landscaping gravel, and the excavation of a hole for planting a tree in the residence’s front yard. LSD monitored ground disturbing activities within the boundary of AZ T:12:217(ASM), the Dennis Addition, and a buffer zone surrounding a prehistoric canal projected to occur north of the project area. The COP requested monitoring be conducted during ground disturbing activities within 50 ft of a prehistoric canal projected to cross the area of potential effects (APE). The APE is also within the historic Dennis Addition (AZ T:12:217[ASM]), a historic addition to the Original Phoenix Townsite. Field investigators examined exposed substrate for the presence of cultural deposits. A prehistoric mano and several possible historical artifacts were found during monitoring.

This document presents the results of archaeological monitoring for a residential rehabilitation project. The project involved the connection of a washing machine drain to the sewer line. LSD monitored ground-disturbing activities within the buffer zone surrounding an unnamed prehistoric canal projected to traverse the southwest corner of the project area. Field investigators examined exposed substrate for the presence of cultural deposits. No cultural resources were encountered.

Three categories of activities are described in this report. A) Construction of a building and associated utilities would result in excavation below the grade to which previous archaeological data recovery and burial removal had occurred. In addition, the proposed construction would include modification to a landscaping easement, sidewalk, and curb along where the new street alignment would form an intersection, where no previous archaeological data recovery or burial removal had occurred. Therefore, a program of archaeological data recovery was implemented for the areas of proposed impact, involving mechanical and hand excavation to achieve archaeological clearance of prehistoric cultural remains and features including burials. B) Archaeological monitoring of ongoing installations of below-ground utilities and landscaping activities under landscaping easements, sidewalks, and streets surrounding the Washington Park parcel were required because no previous excavations had been carried out in those locations. In some cases, prehistoric features were encountered during these installations requiring archaeological documentation or excavation for burial removal. C) Unanticipated discoveries of human burials occurred during testing for toxic contaminants and removal of contaminated fill, especially in the central and south-central parts of the Washington Park parcel, in preparation for later construction. These burials were individually excavated for ultimate repatriation and reburial when they were encountered.

The following report summarizes the results of Phase I data recovery within a portion of AZ U:10:2 (ASM), the Southwest Germann Site, a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)-eligible prehistoric site situated near the intersection of Sossaman and Rittenhouse Roads in the town of Queen Creek, Arizona (Figure 1). The Salt River Project (SRP) plans to construct a substation within a rectangular-shaped, 310- by 360-foot area (USGS Higley, Arizona 7.5' 1956/1981). The 2.5-acre Rohrig substation parcel (Parcel) is in an undeveloped but disturbed segment of SRP-owned land. The project is being funded by SRP. Phase I fieldwork was conducted between May 27 and June 10, 2004. Field crew included Scott Courtright, Dave Bild, Brad Santos, Justin Rogers, and Meghann Walker. During fieldwork, a surface reassessment was undertaken and the extent of the artifact scatter within the Parcel was defined. Systematic backhoe trenching was also completed across the entire Parcel and 35 backhoe trenches were excavated (representing 4 percent of the site surface area). As a result of Phase I data recovery, 27 intact buried features—including one cremation and one indeterminate-age ditch—were located and documented within the Parcel (Figure 2). The cremation was excavated according to the terms of the signed burial agreement. All project-related artifacts, notes, photographs, and samples will be curated with SRP.

Archaeological testing was conducted on a portion of Crismon Pueblo (AZ U:9:173 [ASM]), the Denmark School site, and a segment of additional property between Gilbert Road and Thomas Road in the right-of-way of the Red Mountain Freeway (State Route 202) in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. The project area was originally covered with in-use citrus orchards. Therefore, prior to the initiation of fieldwork, tree removal was conducted within and adjacent to the right-of-way, which required monitoring. Testing consisted of the excavation, inspection, and documentation of 362 backhoe trenches to obtain information on the subsurface distribution of cultural deposits in the right of way and to develop eligibility recommendations for Crismon Pueblo (AZ U:9:173 [ASM]) and the Denmark School site for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Artifacts were collected from the modern ground surface and from the trench excavations as part of the fieldwork.

The integrity of cultural resources and the recommendations regarding those resources within the right-of-way is currently based only on field observations. Therefore, the recommendations for data recovery presented in this report are based on field observations only.
