Spin qubits in silicon are strong contenders for realizing a practical quantum computer. This technology has made remarkable progress with the demonstration of single and two-qubit gates above the fault-tolerant threshold and entanglement of up to three qubits. However, maintaining high fidelity operations while executing multi-qubit algorithms has remained elusive, only being achieved for two spin qubits to date due to the small qubit size, which makes it difficult to control qubits without creating crosstalk errors. Here, we use a four-qubit silicon processor with every operation above the fault tolerant limit and demonstrate Grover's algorithm with a ~95% probability of finding the marked state, one of the most successful implementations to date. Our four-qubit processor is made of three phosphorus atoms and one electron spin precision-patterned into 1.5 nm${}^2$ isotopically pure silicon. The strong resulting confinement potential, without additional confinement gates that can increase cross-talk, leverages the benefits of having both electron and phosphorus nuclear spins. Significantly, the all-to-all connectivity of the nuclear spins provided by the hyperfine interaction not only allows for efficient multi-qubit operations, but also provides individual qubit addressability. Together with the long coherence times of the nuclear and electron spins, this results in all four single qubit fidelities above 99.9% and controlled-Z gates between all pairs of nuclear spins above 99% fidelity. The high control fidelities, combined with >99% fidelity readout of all nuclear spins, allows for the creation of a three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state with 96.2% fidelity, the highest reported for semiconductor spin qubits so far. The performance of the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA) relies on the setting of optimal parameters in each layer of the circuit. This is no trivial task, and much literature has focused on the challenge of finding optimal parameters when the landscape is plagued with problems such as "barren plateaus". There are many choices of optimisation heuristics that can be used to search for optimal parameters, each with its own parameters and initialisation choices that affect performance. More recently, the question of whether such optimal parameter search is even necessary has been posed, with some studies showing that optimal parameters tend to be concentrated on certain values for specific types of problem instances. However, these existing studies have only examined specific instance classes of MaxCut, so it is uncertain if the claims of instance independence apply to a diverse range of instances. In this paper, we use Instance Space Analysis to study the dependence of instance characteristics on the performance of QAOA. Focusing on the MaxCut problem, we assess the effectiveness of parameter initialisation strategies and introduce a new initialisation approach based on instance characteristics called Quantum Instance-Based Parameter Initialisation (QIBPI). This study reveals that using insights about instance characteristics in choosing initialisation parameters can improve QAOA performance. We also show that, within certain instance classes, parameters from smaller instances can be transferred to larger ones. This research provides a foundation for further instance space analysis for quantum algorithms and encourages a broader class of instances to be considered to ensure conclusions are not limited to particular well-studied test problems or classes., Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures

Deep learning has had remarkable success at analyzing handheld imagery such as consumer photos due to the availability of large-scale human annotations (e.g., ImageNet). However, remote sensing data lacks such extensive annotation and thus potential for supervised learning. To address this, we propose a highly effective semi-supervised approach tailored specifically to remote sensing data. Our approach encompasses two key contributions. First, we adapt the FixMatch framework to remote sensing data by designing robust strong and weak augmentations suitable for this domain. Second, we develop an effective semi-supervised learning method by removing bias in imbalanced training data resulting from both actual labels and pseudo-labels predicted by the model. Our simple semi-supervised framework was validated by extensive experimentation. Using 30\% of labeled annotations, it delivers a 7.1\% accuracy gain over the supervised learning baseline and a 2.1\% gain over the supervised state-of-the-art CDS method on the remote sensing xView dataset., Comment: Accepted to CVPR 2023 MultiEarth Workshop

As quantum technology advances and the size of quantum computers grow, it becomes increasingly important to understand the extent of quality in the devices. As large-scale entanglement is a quantum resource crucial for achieving quantum advantage, the challenge in its generation makes it a valuable benchmark for measuring the performance of universal quantum devices. In this work, we study entanglement in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and graph states prepared on the range of IBM Quantum devices. We generate GHZ states and investigate their coherence times with respect to state size and dynamical decoupling techniques. A GHZ fidelity of $0.519 \pm 0.014$ is measured on a 32-qubit GHZ state, certifying its genuine multipartite entanglement (GME). We show a substantial improvement in GHZ decoherence rates for a 7-qubit GHZ state after implementing dynamical decoupling, and observe a linear trend in the decoherence rate of $\alpha=(7.13N+5.54)10^{-3}\mu s^{-1}$ for up to $N=15$ qubits, confirming the absence of superdecoherence. Additionally, we prepare and characterize fully bipartite entangled native graph states on 22 superconducting quantum devices with qubit counts as high as 414 qubits, all active qubits of the 433-qubit IBM Osprey device. Analysis of the decay of 2-qubit entanglement within the prepared states shows suppression of coherent noise signals with the implementation of dynamical decoupling techniques. Additionally, we observe that the entanglement in some qubit pairs oscillates over time, which is likely caused by residual ZZ-interactions. Characterizing entanglement in native graph states, along with detecting entanglement oscillations, can be an effective approach to low-level device benchmarking that encapsulates 2-qubit error rates along with additional sources of noise, with possible applications to quantum circuit compilation., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures

We developed a broadband two-layer anti-reflection (AR) coating for use on a sapphire half-wave plate (HWP) and an alumina infrared (IR) filter for the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarimetry. Measuring the faint CMB B-mode signals requires maximizing the number of photons reaching the detectors and minimizing spurious polarization due to reflection with an off-axis incident angle. Sapphire and alumina have high refractive indices of 3.1 and are highly reflective without an AR coating. This paper presents the design, fabrication, quality control, and measured performance of an AR coating using thermally-sprayed mullite and Duroid 5880LZ. This technology enables large optical elements with diameters of 600 mm. We also present a newly developed thermography-based nondestructive quality control technique, which is key to assuring good adhesion and preventing delamination when thermal cycling. We demonstrate the average reflectance of about 2.6% (0.9%) for two observing bands centered at 90/150 (220/280) GHz. At room temperature, the average transmittance of a 105 mm square test sample at 220/280 GHz is 83%, and it will increase to 90% at 100 K, attributed to reduced absorption losses. Therefore, our developed layering technique has proved effective for 220/280 GHz applications, particularly in addressing dielectric loss concerns. This AR coating technology has been deployed in the cryogenic HWP and IR filters of the Simons Array and the Simons observatory experiments and applies to future experiments such as CMB-S4.

Noise on quantum devices is much more complex than it is commonly given credit. Far from usual models of decoherence, nearly all quantum devices are plagued both by a continuum of environments and temporal instabilities. These induce noisy quantum and classical correlations at the level of the circuit. The relevant spatiotemporal effects are difficult enough to understand, let alone combat. There is presently a lack of either scalable or complete methods to address the phenomena responsible for scrambling and loss of quantum information. Here, we make deep strides to remedy this problem. We establish a theoretical framework that uniformly incorporates and classifies all non-Markovian phenomena. Our framework is universal, assumes unknown control, and is written entirely in terms of experimentally accessible circuit-level quantities. We formulate an efficient reconstruction using tensor network learning, allowing also for easy modularisation and simplification based on the expected physics of the system. This is then demonstrated through both extensive numerical studies and experiments on IBM Quantum devices, estimating a comprehensive set of spacetime correlations. Finally, we conclude our analysis with applications thereof to the efficacy of control techniques to counteract these effects -- including noise-aware circuit compilation and optimised dynamical decoupling. We find significant improvements are possible in the diamond norm and average gate fidelity of arbitrary $SU(4)$ operations, as well as related decoupling improvements in contrast to off-the-shelf schemes., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures + 7 page appendix. Many modern millimeter and submillimeter (``mm-wave'') telescopes for astronomy are deploying more detectors by increasing detector pixel density, and with the rise of lithographed detector architectures and high-throughput readout techniques, it is becoming increasingly practical to overfill the focal plane. However, when the pixel pitch $p_{\rm pix}$ is small compared to the product of the wavelength $\lambda$ and the focal ratio $F$, or $p_{\mathrm{pix}} \lesssim 1.2 F \lambda$, the Bose term of the photon noise correlates between neighboring detector pixels due to the Hanbury Brown & Twiss (HBT) effect. When this HBT effect is non-negligible, the array-averaged sensitivity scales with detector count $N_{\mathrm{det}}$ less favorably than the uncorrelated limit of $N_{\mathrm{det}}^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we present a general prescription to calculate this HBT correlation based on a quantum optics formalism and extend it to polarization-sensitive detectors. We then estimate the impact of HBT correlations on the sensitivity of a model mm-wave telescope and discuss the implications for focal-plane design., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

Machine learning algorithms are powerful tools for data driven tasks such as image classification and feature detection, however their vulnerability to adversarial examples - input samples manipulated to fool the algorithm - remains a serious challenge. The integration of machine learning with quantum computing has the potential to yield tools offering not only better accuracy and computational efficiency, but also superior robustness against adversarial attacks. Indeed, recent work has employed quantum mechanical phenomena to defend against adversarial attacks, spurring the rapid development of the field of quantum adversarial machine learning (QAML) and potentially yielding a new source of quantum advantage. Despite promising early results, there remain challenges towards building robust real-world QAML tools. In this review we discuss recent progress in QAML and identify key challenges. Quantum Computing offers a potentially powerful new method for performing Machine Learning. However, several Quantum Machine Learning techniques have been shown to exhibit poor generalisation as the number of qubits increases. We address this issue by demonstrating a permutation invariant quantum encoding method, which exhibits superior generalisation performance, and apply it to point cloud data (three-dimensional images composed of points). Point clouds naturally contain permutation symmetry with respect to the ordering of their points, making them a natural candidate for this technique. Our method captures this symmetry in a quantum encoding that contains an equal quantum superposition of all permutations and is therefore invariant under point order permutation. We test this encoding method in numerical simulations using a Quantum Support Vector Machine to classify point clouds drawn from either spherical or toroidal geometries. We show that a permutation invariant encoding improves in accuracy as the number of points contained in the point cloud increases, while non-invariant quantum encodings decrease in accuracy. The efficient preparation of quantum states is an important step in the execution of many quantum algorithms. In the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computing era, this is a significant challenge given quantum resources are scarce and typically only low-depth quantum circuits can be implemented on physical devices. We present a genetic algorithm for state preparation (GASP) which generates relatively low-depth quantum circuits for initialising a quantum computer in a specified quantum state. The method uses a basis set of R_x, R_y, R_z, and CNOT gates and a genetic algorithm to systematically generate circuits to synthesize the target state to the required fidelity. GASP can produce more efficient circuits of a given accuracy with lower depth and gate counts than other methods. This variability of the required accuracy facilitates overall higher accuracy on implementation, as error accumulation in high-depth circuits can be avoided. We directly compare the method to the state initialisation technique based on an exact synthesis technique by implemented in IBM Qiskit simulated with noise and implemented on physical IBM Quantum devices. Results achieved by GASP outperform Qiskit's exact general circuit synthesis method on a variety of states such as Gaussian states and W-states, and consistently show the method reduces the number of gates required for the quantum circuits to generate these quantum states to the required accuracy.

In the lead up to fault tolerance, the utility of quantum computing will be determined by how adequately the effects of noise can be circumvented in quantum algorithms. Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms such as the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) have been designed for the short-term regime. However, as problems scale, VQE results are generally scrambled by noise on present-day hardware. While error mitigation techniques alleviate these issues to some extent, there is a pressing need to develop algorithmic approaches with higher robustness to noise. Here, we explore the robustness properties of the recently introduced quantum computed moments (QCM) approach to ground state energy problems, and show through an analytic example how the underlying energy estimate explicitly filters out incoherent noise. Motivated by this observation, we implement QCM for a model of quantum magnetism on IBM Quantum hardware to examine the noise-filtering effect with increasing circuit depth. We find that QCM maintains a remarkably high degree of error robustness where VQE completely fails. On instances of the quantum magnetism model up to 20 qubits for ultra-deep trial state circuits of up to ~500 CNOTs, QCM is still able to extract reasonable energy estimates. The observation is bolstered by an extensive set of experimental results. To match these results, VQE would need hardware improvement by some 2 orders of magnitude on error rates., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

From an open system perspective non-Markovian effects due to a nearby bath or neighbouring qubits are dynamically equivalent. However, there is a conceptual distinction to account for: neighbouring qubits may be controlled. We combine recent advances in non-Markovian quantum process tomography with the framework of classical shadows to characterise spatiotemporal quantum correlations. Observables here constitute operations applied to the system, where the free operation is the maximally depolarising channel. Using this as a causal break, we systematically erase causal pathways to narrow down the progenitors of temporal correlations. We show that one application of this is to filter out the effects of crosstalk and probe only non-Markovianity from an inaccessible bath. It also provides a lens on spatiotemporally spreading correlated noise throughout a lattice from common environments. We demonstrate both examples on synthetic data. Owing to the scaling of classical shadows, we can erase arbitrarily many neighbouring qubits at no extra cost. The emergence of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) to enhance traditional classical learning methods has seen various limitations to its realisation. There is therefore an imperative to develop quantum models with unique model hypotheses to attain expressional and computational advantage. In this work we extend the linear quantum support vector machine (QSVM) with kernel function computed through quantum kernel estimation (QKE), to form a decision tree classifier constructed from a decision directed acyclic graph of QSVM nodes - the ensemble of which we term the quantum random forest (QRF). To limit overfitting, we further extend the model to employ a low-rank Nystr\"{o}m approximation to the kernel matrix. We provide generalisation error bounds on the model and theoretical guarantees to limit errors due to finite sampling on the Nystr\"{o}m-QKE strategy. In doing so, we show that we can achieve lower sampling complexity when compared to QKE. We numerically illustrate the effect of varying model hyperparameters and finally demonstrate that the QRF is able obtain superior performance over QSVMs, while also requiring fewer kernel estimations., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures

Open quantum systems are ubiquitous in the physical sciences, with widespread applications in the areas of chemistry, condensed matter physics, material science, optics, and many more. Not surprisingly, there is significant interest in their efficient simulation. However, direct classical simulation quickly becomes intractable with coupling to an environment whose effective dimension grows exponentially. This raises the question: can quantum computers help model these complex dynamics? A first step in answering this question requires understanding the computational complexity of this task. Here, we map the temporal complexity of a process to the spatial complexity of a many-body state using a computational model known as the process tensor framework. With this, we are able to explore the simulation complexity of an open quantum system as a dynamic sampling problem: a system coupled to an environment can be probed at successive points in time -- accessing multi-time correlations. The complexity of multi-time sampling, which is an important and interesting problem in its own right, contains the complexity of master equations and stochastic maps as a special case. Our results show how the complexity of the underlying quantum stochastic process corresponds to the complexity of the associated family of master equations for the dynamics. We present both analytical and numerical examples whose multi-time sampling is as complex as sampling from a many-body state that is classically hard. This also implies that the corresponding family of master equations are classically hard. Our results pave the way for studying open quantum systems from a complexity-theoretic perspective, highlighting the role quantum computers will play in our understanding of quantum dynamics.

Thermally sprayed mullite and Duroid 5880LZ were selected in terms of index and coefficient of thermal expansion for use at cryogenic temperatures. With these materials, the reflectivity was reduced to about 2% at 90/150 GHz and <1% at 220/280 GHz. The design, fabrication, and optical performance evaluation of the AR coatings are described. The coatings were used in a current ground-based CMB experiment called the Simons Array. Quantum computers are anticipated to transcend classical supercomputers for computationally intensive tasks by exploiting the principles of quantum mechanics. However, the capabilities of the current generation of quantum devices are limited due to noise or errors, and therefore implementation of error mitigation and/or correction techniques is pivotal to reliably process quantum algorithms. In this work, we have performed a comparative analysis of the error mitigation capability of the [[4,2,2]] quantum error-detecting code (QEC method), duplicate circuit technique, and the Bayesian read-out error mitigation (BREM) approach in the context of proof-of-concept implementations of variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm for determining the ground state energy of H$_2$ molecule. Based on experiments on IBM quantum device, our results show that the duplicate circuit approach performs superior to the QEC method in the presence of the hardware noise. A significant impact of cross-talk noise was observed when multiple mappings of the duplicate circuit and the QEC method were implemented simultaneously $-$ again the duplicate circuit approach overall performed better than the QEC method. To gain further insights into the performance of the studied error mitigation techniques, we also performed quantum simulations on IBM system with varying strengths of depolarising circuit noise and read-out errors which further supported the main finding of our work that the duplicate circuit offer superior performance towards mitigating of errors when compared to the QEC method. Our work reports a first assessment of the duplicate circuit approach for a quantum algorithm implementation and the documented evidence will pave the way for future scalable implementations of the duplicated circuit techniques for the error-mitigated practical applications of near-term quantum computers., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures

By the standard second law of thermodynamics, heat spontaneously flows from a hotter body to a colder body. However, quantum systems in which quantum correlations play a prominent role can exhibit a non-classical reversal of such heat flow. We propose a quantum system consisting of a chain of qubits, each in local Gibbs states, where only adjacent qubits are allowed to thermally interact. By controlling initial quantum correlations along the chain, we then demonstrate non-classical heat reversal for the special case of a three-qubit chain on a quantum computer. We explore multiple initial conditions for the spin chain to showcase exotic behaviour such as the preferential pumping of heat afforded by unequal initial correlations between adjacent pairs of qubits, reinforcing the role that initial correlations play in influencing the dynamics of heat flow., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Quantum process tomography (QPT), where a quantum channel is reconstructed through the analysis of repeated quantum measurements, is an important tool for validating the operation of a quantum processor. We detail the combined use of an existing QPT approach based on tensor networks (TNs) and unsupervised learning with TN contraction path finding algorithms in order to use TNs of arbitrary topologies for reconstruction. Experiments were conducted on the 7-qubit IBM Quantum Falcon Processor ibmq_casablanca, where we demonstrate this technique by matching the topology of the tensor networks used for reconstruction with the topology of the processor, allowing us to extend past the characterisation of linear nearest neighbour circuits. Furthermore, we conduct single-qubit gate set tomography (GST) on each individual qubit to correct for separable errors during the state preparation and measurement phases of QPT, which are separate from the channel under consideration but may negatively impact the quality of its reconstruction. We are able to report a fidelity of 0.89 against the ideal unitary channel of a single-cycle random quantum circuit performed on ibmq_casablanca, after obtaining just $1.1 \times 10^5$ measurements for the reconstruction of this 7-qubit process. This represents more than five orders of magnitude fewer total measurements than the number needed to conduct full, traditional QPT on a 7-qubit process., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Imaging individual conformational instances of generic, inhomogeneous, transient or intrinsically disordered protein systems at the single molecule level in situ is one of the notable challenges in structural biology. Present techniques access averaged structural information by measuring over large ensembles of proteins in nearly uniform conformational states in synthetic environments. This poses significant implications for diagnostics and drug design which require a detailed understanding of subtle conformational changes, small molecule interactions and ligand dynamics. Here we tackle the problem by designing a single molecule imaging platform technology embracing the advantages silicon-based spin qubits offer in terms of quantum coherence and established fabrication pathways. We demonstrate through detailed simulation, that this platform enables scalable atomic-level structure-determination of individual molecular systems in native environments. The approach is particularly well suited to the high-value lipid-membrane context, and as such its experimental implementation could have far-reaching consequences for the understanding of membrane biology and drug development.

Quantum computers hold promise to circumvent the limitations of conventional computing for difficult molecular problems. However, the accumulation of quantum logic errors on real devices represents a major challenge, particularly in the pursuit of chemical accuracy requiring the inclusion of dynamical effects. In this work we implement the quantum computed moments (QCM) approach for hydrogen chain molecular systems up to H$_6$. On a superconducting quantum processor, Hamiltonian moments, $\langle \mathcal{H}^p\rangle$ are computed with respect to the Hartree-Fock state, which are then employed in Lanczos expansion theory to determine an estimate for the ground-state energy which incorporates electronic correlations and manifestly improves on the variational result. Post-processing purification of the raw QCM data takes the estimate through the Hartree-Fock variational limit to within 99.9% of the exact electronic ground-state energy for the largest system studied, H$_6$. Calculated dissociation curves indicate precision at about 10mH for this system and as low as 0.1mH for molecular hydrogen, H$_2$, over a range of bond lengths. In the context of stringent precision requirements for chemical problems, these results provide strong evidence for the error suppression capability of the QCM method, particularly when coupled with post-processing error mitigation. Greater emphasis on more efficient representations of the Hamiltonian and classical preprocessing steps may enable the solution of larger systems on near-term quantum processors., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Multi-time quantum processes are endowed with the same richness as many-body physics, including temporal entanglement and well-defined causal structures. We dub this many-time physics, and show how surprisingly accessible, yet under-explored, these phenomena are in nascent quantum processors. Here, we develop a family of tools that allow us access to many-time physics on quantum information processors, which are then demonstrated. First, we access short-range microscopic properties, such as genuine multi-time entanglement and estimators for non-Markovian memory. Then, adapting classical shadow tomography to many-time scenarios, we access macroscopic features like long-range correlations and compact representations of large processes. We showcase this for a 20-step process (42-qubit state) by accurately capturing numerous facets of the dynamics, including multi-time correlations -- for example, in the prediction of mid-circuit measurement distributions. Our techniques are pertinent to generic quantum stochastic dynamical processes, with a scope ranging across condensed matter physics, quantum biology, and in-depth diagnostics of NISQ era quantum devices., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures + SI

Quantum machine learning (QML) is a rapidly growing area of research at the intersection of classical machine learning and quantum information theory. One area of considerable interest is the use of QML to learn information contained within quantum states themselves. In this work, we propose a novel approach in which the extraction of information from quantum states is undertaken in a classical representational-space, obtained through the training of a hybrid quantum autoencoder (HQA). Hence, given a set of pure states, this variational QML algorithm learns to identify, and classically represent, their essential distinguishing characteristics, subsequently giving rise to a new paradigm for clustering and semi-supervised classification. The analysis and employment of the HQA model are presented in the context of amplitude encoded states - which in principle can be extended to arbitrary states for the analysis of structure in non-trivial quantum data sets., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Phosphorus donor spins in silicon offer a number of promising characteristics for the implementation of robust qubits. Amongst various concepts for scale-up, the shared-control concept takes advantage of 3D scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) fabrication techniques to minimise the number of control lines, allowing the donors to be placed at the pitch limit of $\geq$30 nm, enabling dipole interactions. A fundamental challenge is to exploit the faster exchange interaction, however, the donor spacings required are typically 15 nm or less, and the exchange interaction is notoriously sensitive to lattice site variations in donor placement. This work presents a proposal for a fast exchange-based surface-code quantum computer architecture which explicitly addresses both donor placement imprecision commensurate with the atomic-precision fabrication techniques and the stringent qubit pitch requirements. The effective pitch is extended by incorporation of an intermediate donor acting as an exchange-interaction switch. We consider both global control schemes and a scheduled series of operations by designing GRAPE pulses for individual CNOTs based on coupling scenarios predicted by atomistic tight-binding simulations. Characterisation protocols have so far played a central role in the development of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers capable of impressive quantum feats. This trajectory is expected to continue in building the next generation of devices: ones that can surpass classical computers for particular tasks -- but progress in characterisation must keep up with the complexities of intricate device noise. A missing piece in the zoo of characterisation procedures is tomography which can completely describe non-Markovian dynamics over a given time frame. Here, we formally introduce a generalisation of quantum process tomography, which we call process tensor tomography. We detail the experimental requirements, construct the necessary post-processing algorithms for maximum-likelihood estimation, outline the best-practice aspects for accurate results, and make the procedure efficient for low-memory processes. The characterisation is a pathway to diagnostics and informed control of correlated noise. As an example application of the hardware-agnostic technique, we show how its predictive control can be used to substantially improve multi-time circuit fidelities on superconducting quantum devices. Quantum computers have the potential to speed up certain computational tasks. A possibility this opens up within the field of machine learning is the use of quantum techniques that may be inefficient to simulate classically but could provide superior performance in some tasks. Machine learning algorithms are ubiquitous in particle physics and as advances are made in quantum machine learning technology there may be a similar adoption of these quantum techniques. In this work a quantum support vector machine (QSVM) is implemented for signal-background classification. We investigate the effect of different quantum encoding circuits, the process that transforms classical data into a quantum state, on the final classification performance. We show an encoding approach that achieves an average Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) of 0.848 determined using quantum circuit simulations. For this same dataset the best classical method tested, a classical Support Vector Machine (SVM) using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel achieved an AUC of 0.793. Using a reduced version of the dataset we then ran the algorithm on the IBM Quantum ibmq_casablanca device achieving an average AUC of 0.703. As further improvements to the error rates and availability of quantum computers materialise, they could form a new approach for data analysis in high energy physics., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The ability to generate large-scale entanglement is an important progenitor of quantum information processing capability in noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which entangled quantum states over large numbers of qubits can be prepared on current superconducting quantum devices. We prepared native-graph states on the IBM Quantum 65-qubit $\textit{ibmq_manhattan}$ device and the 53-qubit $\textit{ibmq_rochester}$ device and applied quantum readout-error mitigation (QREM). Connected entanglement graphs spanning each of the full devices were detected, indicating bipartite entanglement over the whole of each device. The application of QREM was shown to increase the observed entanglement within all measurements, in particular, the detected number of entangled pairs of qubits found within $\textit{ibmq_rochester}$ increased from 31 to 56 of the total 58 connected pairs. The results of this work indicate full bipartite entanglement in two of the largest superconducting devices to date., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment from the Atacama Desert in Chile comprising three small-aperture telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture telescope (LAT). In total, SO will field over 60,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers in six spectral bands centered between 27 and 280 GHz in order to achieve the sensitivity necessary to measure or constrain numerous cosmological quantities. In this work, we focus on the SATs which are optimized to search for primordial gravitational waves that are detected as parity-odd polarization patterns called a B-modes on degree scales in the CMB. Each SAT employs a single optics tube with TES arrays operating at 100 mK. The high throughput optics system has a 42 cm aperture and a 35-degree field of view coupled to a 36 cm diameter focal plane. The optics consist of three metamaterial anti-re ection coated silicon lenses. Cryogenic ring baffles with engineered blackbody absorbers are installed in the optics tube to minimize the stray light. The entire optics tube is cooled to 1 K. A cryogenic continuously rotating half-wave plate near the sky side of the aperture stop helps to minimize the effect of atmospheric uctuations. The telescope warm baffling consists of a forebaffle, an elevation stage mounted co-moving shield, and a fixed ground shield that together control the far side-lobes and mitigates ground-synchronous systematics. Generating and detecting genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) of sizeable quantum states prepared on physical devices is an important benchmark for highlighting the progress of near-term quantum computers. A common approach to certify GME is to prepare a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and measure a GHZ fidelity of at least 0.5. We measure the fidelities using multiple quantum coherences of GHZ states on 11 to 27 qubits prepared on the IBM Quantum ibmq_montreal device. Combinations of quantum readout error mitigation (QREM) and parity verification error detection are applied to the states. A fidelity of $0.546 \pm 0.017$ was recorded for a 27-qubit GHZ state when QREM was used, demonstrating GME across the full device with a confidence level of 98.6%. We benchmarked the effect of parity verification on GHZ fidelity for two GHZ state preparation embeddings on the heavy-hexagon architecture. The results show that the effect of parity verification, while relatively modest, led to a detectable improvement of GHZ fidelity., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. Quantum phenomena are typically observable at length and time scales smaller than those of our everyday experience, often involving individual particles or excitations. The past few decades have seen a revolution in the ability to structure matter at the nanoscale, and experiments at the single particle level have become commonplace. This has opened wide new avenues for exploring and harnessing quantum mechanical effects in condensed matter. These quantum phenomena, in turn, have the potential to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and probe the nanoscale world. Here, we review developments in key areas of quantum research in light of the nanotechnologies that enable them, with a view to what the future holds. Materials and devices with nanoscale features are used for quantum metrology and sensing, as building blocks for quantum computing, and as sources and detectors for quantum communication. They enable explorations of quantum behaviour and unconventional states in nano- and opto-mechanical systems, low-dimensional systems, molecular devices, nano-plasmonics, quantum electrodynamics, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and more. The variational principle of quantum mechanics is the backbone of hybrid quantum computing for a range of applications. However, as the problem size grows, quantum logic errors and the effect of barren plateaus overwhelm the quality of the results. There is now a clear focus on strategies that require fewer quantum circuit steps and are robust to device errors. Here we present an approach in which problem complexity is transferred to dynamic quantities computed on the quantum processor - Hamiltonian moments, $\langle H^n\rangle$. From these quantum computed moments, estimates of the ground-state energy are obtained using the "infinum" theorem from Lanczos cumulant expansions which manifestly correct the associated variational calculation. With system dynamics encoded in the moments the burden on the trial-state quantum circuit depth is eased. The method is introduced and demonstrated on 2D quantum magnetism models on lattices up to 5 $\times$ 5 (25 qubits) implemented on IBM Quantum superconducting qubit devices. Moments were quantum computed to fourth order with respect to a parameterised antiferromagnetic trial-state. A comprehensive comparison with benchmark variational calculations was performed, including over an ensemble of random coupling instances. The results showed that the infinum estimate consistently outperformed the benchmark variational approach for the same trial-state. These initial investigations suggest that the quantum computed moments approach has a high degree of stability against trial-state variation, quantum gate errors and shot noise, all of which bodes well for further investigation and applications of the approach., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5\sigma$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

For universal quantum computation, a major challenge to overcome for practical implementation is the large amount of resources required for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. An important aspect is implementing arbitrary unitary operators built from logical gates within the quantum error correction code. A synthesis algorithm can be used to approximate any unitary gate up to arbitrary precision by assembling sequences of logical gates chosen from a small set of universal gates that are fault-tolerantly performable while encoded in a quantum error-correction code. However, current procedures do not yet support individual assignment of base gate costs and many do not support extended sets of universal base gates. We analysed cost-optimal sequences using an exhaustive search based on Dijkstra's pathfinding algorithm for the canonical Clifford+$T$ set of base gates and compared them to when additionally including $Z$-rotations from higher orders of the Clifford hierarchy. Two approaches of assigning base gate costs were used. First, costs were reduced to $T$-counts by recursively applying a $Z$-rotation catalyst circuit. Second, costs were assigned as the average numbers of raw (i.e. physical level) magic states required to directly distil and implement the gates fault-tolerantly. We found that the average sequence cost decreases by up to $54\pm 3\%$ when using the $Z$-rotation catalyst circuit approach and by up to $33\pm 2 \%$ when using the magic state distillation approach. In addition, we investigated observed limitations of certain assignments of base gate costs by developing an analytic model to estimate the proportion of sets of $Z$-rotation gates from higher orders of the Clifford hierarchy that are found within sequences approximating random target gates., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

In the scale-up of quantum computers, the framework underpinning fault-tolerance generally relies on the strong assumption that environmental noise affecting qubit logic is uncorrelated (Markovian). However, as physical devices progress well into the complex multi-qubit regime, attention is turning to understanding the appearance and mitigation of correlated -- or non-Markovian -- noise, which poses a serious challenge to the progression of quantum technology. This error type has previously remained elusive to characterisation techniques. Here, we develop a framework for characterising non-Markovian dynamics in quantum systems and experimentally test it on multi-qubit superconducting quantum devices. Where noisy processes cannot be accounted for using standard Markovian techniques, our reconstruction predicts the behaviour of the devices with an infidelity of $10^{-3}$. Our results show this characterisation technique leads to superior quantum control and extension of coherence time by effective decoupling from the non-Markovian environment. This framework, validated by our results, is applicable to any controlled quantum device and offers a significant step towards optimal device operation and noise reduction.

The Simons Observatory (SO) is an upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment located on Cerro Toco, Chile, that will map the microwave sky in temperature and polarization in six frequency bands spanning 27 to 285 GHz. SO will consist of one 6-meter Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) fielding $\sim$30,000 detectors and an array of three 0.42-meter Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) fielding an additional 30,000 detectors. This synergy will allow for the extremely sensitive characterization of the CMB over angular scales ranging from an arcmin to tens of degrees, enabling a wide range of scientific output. Here we focus on the SATs targeting degree angular scales with successive dichroic instruments observing at Mid-Frequency (MF: 93/145 GHz), Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF: 225/285 GHz), and Low-Frequency (LF: 27/39 GHz). The three SATs will be able to map $\sim$10% of the sky to a noise level of 2 $\mu$K-arcmin when combining 93 and 145 GHz. The multiple frequency bands will allow the CMB to be separated from galactic foregrounds (primarily synchrotron and dust), with the primary science goal of characterizing the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, at a target level of $\sigma \left(r\right) \approx 0.003$.

Quantum system characterization techniques represent the front line in the identification and mitigation of noise in quantum computing, but can be expensive in terms of quantum resources and time to repeatedly employ. Another challenging aspect is that parameters governing the performance of various operations tend to drift over time, and monitoring these is hence a difficult task. One of the most promising characterization techniques, gate set tomography (GST), provides a self-consistent estimate of the completely positive, trace-preserving (CPTP) maps for a complete set of gates, as well as preparation and measurement operators. We develop a method for performance optimization seeded by tomography (POST), which couples the power of GST with a classical optimization routine to achieve a consistent gate improvement in just a short number of steps within a given calibration cycle. By construction, the POST procedure finds the best available gate operation given the hardware, and is therefore robust to the effects of drift. Further, in comparison to other quantum error mitigation techniques, it builds upon a one-time application of GST. To demonstrate the performance of this method on a real quantum computer, we map out the operations of six qubit pairs on the superconducting \emph{ibmq\_poughkeepsie} quantum device. Under the restriction of logical-only control, we monitor the performance of the POST approach on a chosen CNOT gate over a period of six weeks. In this time, we achieve a consistent improvement in gate fidelity, averaging a fidelity increase of 21.1\% as measured by randomized benchmarking. We present a measurement of the gravitational lensing deflection power spectrum reconstructed with two seasons cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment. Observations were taken at 150 GHz from 2012 to 2014 which survey three patches of sky totaling 30 square degrees. We test the consistency of the lensing spectrum with a Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology and reject the no-lensing hypothesis at a confidence of 10.9 sigma including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We observe a value of A_L = 1.33 +/- 0.32 (statistical) +/- 0.02 (systematic) +/- 0.07 (foreground) using all polarization lensing estimators, which corresponds to a 24% accurate measurement of the lensing amplitude. Compared to the analysis of the first year data, we have improved the breadth of both the suite of null tests and the error terms included in the estimation of systematic contamination.

We introduce a framework for mapping NP-Hard problems to adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) architectures that are heavily restricted in both connectivity and dynamic range of couplings, for which minor-embedding -- the standard problem mapping method -- cannot be directly applied. Separating the mapping into two distinct stages, we introduce problem-specific reductions for both quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation (QUBO) and satisfiability (SAT) and develop the subdivision-embedding method that is suitable for directly embedding onto these heavily restricted architectures. The theory underpinning this framework provides tools to aid in the manipulation of Ising Hamiltonians for the purposes of Ising energy minimisation, and could be used to assist in developing and optimising further problem mapping techniques. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. We present the first measurement of cross-correlation between the lensing potential, reconstructed from cosmic microwave background (CMB) {\it polarization} data, and the cosmic shear field from galaxy shapes. This measurement is made using data from the POLARBEAR CMB experiment and the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. By analyzing an 11~deg$^2$ overlapping region, we reject the null hypothesis at 3.5$\sigma$\ and constrain the amplitude of the {\bf cross-spectrum} to $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}=1.70\pm 0.48$, where $\widehat{A}_{\rm lens}$ is the amplitude normalized with respect to the Planck~2018{} prediction, based on the flat $\Lambda$ cold dark matter cosmology. The first measurement of this {\bf cross-spectrum} without relying on CMB temperature measurements is possible due to the deep POLARBEAR map with a noise level of ${\sim}$6\,$\mu$K-arcmin, as well as the deep HSC data with a high galaxy number density of $n_g=23\,{\rm arcmin^{-2}}$. Atomic level qubits in silicon are attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing, however, their quantum properties and controllability are sensitive to details such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise location. This work combines machine learning techniques with million-atom simulations of scanning-tunnelling-microscope (STM) images of dopants to formulate a theoretical framework capable of determining the number of dopants at a particular qubit location and their positions with exact lattice-site precision. A convolutional neural network was trained on 100,000 simulated STM images, acquiring a characterisation fidelity (number and absolute donor positions) of above 98\% over a set of 17,600 test images including planar and blurring noise. The method established here will enable a high-precision post-fabrication characterisation of dopant qubits in silicon, with high-throughput potentially alleviating the requirements on the level of resource required for quantum-based characterisation, which may be otherwise a challenge in the context of large qubit arrays for universal quantum computing., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures and a supplementary information document
