Abstract

This paper focuses on remote-control and autonomous vessels from a sociological perspective. We report that if CSCW research aims to shed light on other disciplines, researchers should be reflexive insider that first position themselves in such disciplines. Through reflexive practice, CSCW researchers could connect communities of practice, thus narrowing the distance between design and engineering.

8. Simulator as a Tool for the Future Maritime Education and Research: A Discussion

Abstract

A few studies in the maritime domain utilize co-design in ship design workshops, however, none of them addresses a full picture of how co-design can make changes in simulation-based maritime education. In this paper, we reflect how co-design can help to foresight future skills in the maritime domain, especially on how to use simulators to support increasing competence of seafarers and in turn to redesign simulators to support maritime education. Thus, we address collaborative and innovative research activities, to enable all participants (seafarers, trainers, technicians, authorities etc.) to share their experiences so a joint recognition of needed future skills can be reached. Along with the ex-change of experiences, we assert that the supported simulations and simulator techniques could be designed to achieve sustainable growth for all participants.

9. Making Sense of Maritime Simulators Use: A Multiple Case Study in Norway

Abstract

This paper reports a multiple case study of a training center collaboration with three offshore companies and a coastline authority. Through a qualitative inquiry, we utilized the actor-network theory to analyze the common understanding of simulator use in these organizations. The paper argues that the simulator itself is an actor that can integrate shared interests with other actors to establish an actor-network. Such an actor-network expands simulator use beyond purely training purposes. It advocates that the simulator is a medium between maritime academia and industry and aligns it with the same actor-network to facilitate the process of "meaning construction." Such a meaning construction process offers simulator-based training with a valuable definition of the learning outcomes. It helps clarifying who will gain the benefits from simulator use in the future, as well as when and on what basis. The paper also reflects on the benefits and limitations of utilizing a multiple case study in the maritime domain.

Abstract

Digitalization has become a key aspect of making maritime industries more innovative, efficient, and fit for future operations. One of the most attractive aspects is the concept of digital twins, which refers to digital replicas of physical assets, processes, and systems that can be used as advanced tools for design, operation, and maintenance. This article introduces the development of the digital twin of the research vessel (RV) Gunnerus in Norway, which will be a significant scientific and operational achievement for the maritime industry, making efficient and safe offshore operations possible. It enables data exchange safely and easily among different subsystems, modules, and various applications. Thus, the twin ship can provide an integrated view of the ship’s various physical and behavioral aspects in different stages and allow simultaneous optimization of functional performance requirements. In addition, it enables advanced control and optimization, e.g., creating more reliable prediction for flexible objectives (time, output, emissions, fuel consumption), and executing day-ahead and long-term planning for operations. Several related applications are presented in the end to confirm the effectiveness of the digital twin ship system.

33. The contribution of Vessel Traffic Services to safe coexistence between automated and conventional vessels.

Abstract

The maritime industry could face major changes the coming decade. Technology development opens for new ways of operating vessels and autonomy is argued to revolutionise design and operations. However, despite a large focus on autonomy for several years, no autonomous concepts have become operational. In our paper, we suggest an initial step towards autonomy using unmanned automated vessels. To explore this, we utilize the coherence between the systems thinking and participatory design thinking process. We frame the project to focus on the Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) traffic regulation and organisation measures in a 2025 scenario. The study shows that the standardisation of traffic would be beneficial for the present MTS with only conventional vessels, it will be a prerequisite for a future MTS with automated vessels. Further, we identify that the VTS need to change their role from solving situations ad-hoc to assume a tactical responsibility in traffic planning and to resolve situations at an earlier stage. A prototype of the future MTS shows that the identified challenges are considered possible to solve within a short time frame and is summed up in one statement from a plenary discussion: 'this is not difficult, we could do it tomorrow'. 49. Foresight Future Skills in Digitalisation Era: The Role of Participatory Design in Simulation-based Maritime Education

Abstract

A few studies in the maritime domain utilize participatory design (PD) in ship design workshops, however, none of them addresses a full picture of how PD can make changes in simulation-based maritime education. In this reflection paper, we answer how PD can help to foresight future skills in the maritime domain, especially on how to use simulators to support increasing competence of seafarers and in turn to redesign simulators to support maritime education. In this paper, we aim to uplift the experimental skills of current debate from normal science to a socially embedded marine technology, addressing collaborative and innovative research activities, to enable all participants (seafarers, trainers, technicians, authorities etc.) to share their experiences so a joint recognition of needed future skills can be reached. Along with the exchange of experiences, we assert that the supported simulations and simulator techniques could be designed to achieve sustainable growth for all participants as well as the upcoming digitalisation era in the maritime domain.
