An anisotropic damage model is employed in order to simulate the fracture pattern of Bohus granite under quasi-static spherical indentation loading. The chosen damage description is added to the previously employed Drucker-Prager plasticity model with variable dilation angle. The resulting constitutive model is implemented to simulate the behavior of Bohus granite under indentation up to the load capacity of the material. The initial fragmentation, corresponding to the first small load-drop in the force-penetration curve, is likely due to the high radial tensile stress state at or close to the contact boundary. Both predicted fracture pattern and force-penetration results from the numerical simulation are compared to experimental data and a good agreement is found. The variability in tensile strength of the material is included in the chosen damage model by taking advantage of Weibull statistics. Microscopic digital volume correlation (DVC) and finite element precoalescence strain evaluations are compared for two nodular cast iron specimens. Displacement fields from \textit{in-situ} 3D synchrotron laminography images are obtained by DVC. Subsequently the microstructure is explicitely meshed from the images considering nodules as voids. Boundary conditions are applied from the DVC measurement. Image segmentation-related uncertainties are taken into account and observed to be negligible with respect to the differences between strain levels. Macroscopic as well as local strain levels in coalescing ligaments between voids nucleated at large graphite nodules are compared. Macroscopic strain levels are consistently predicted. A very good agreement is observed for one of the specimens, while the strain levels for the second specimen presents some discrepancies. Limitations of the modeling and numerical framework are discussed in light of these differences. A discussion of the use of strain as coalescence indicator is initiated.

We investigate dynamic fracture of heterogeneous materials experimentally by measuring displacement fields as a rupture propagates through a periodic array of obstacles of controlled fracture energy. Our measurements demonstrate the applicability of the classical equation of motion of cracks at a discontinuity of fracture energy: the crack speed jumps at the entrance and exit of an obstacle, as predicted by the crack-tip energy balance within the brittle fracture framework. The speed jump amplitude is governed by the fracture energy contrast and by the combination of rate-dependency of fracture energy and inertia of the medium, which allows the crack to cross a fracture energy discontinuity at constant energy release rate. This discontinuous dynamics and the rate-dependence cause higher effective toughness, which governs the coarse-grained behavior of these cracks.

A recently developed Projection-based Digital Image Correlation (P-DVC) method is here extended to 4D (space and time) displacement field measurement and mechanical identification based on a single radiograph per loading step instead of volumes as in standard DVC methods. Two levels of data reductions are exploited, namely, reduction of the data acquisition (and time) by a factor of 1000 and reduction of the solution space by exploiting model reduction techniques. The analysis of a complete tensile elastoplastic test composed of 127 loading steps performed in 6 minutes is presented. INTRODUCTION Identification and validation of increasingly complex mechanical models is a major concern in experimental solid mechanics. The recent developments of computed tomography coupled with in-situ tests provide extremely rich and non-destructive analyses [1]. In the latter cases, the sample was imaged inside a tomograph, either with interrupted mechanical load or with a continuously evolving loading and on-the-fly acquisitions (as ultra-fast X-ray synchrotron tomography, namely, 20 Hz full scan acquisition for the study of crack propagation [2]). Visualization of fast transformations, crack openings, or unsteady behavior become accessible. Tomographic reconstruction of a binary image from few projections is considered. A novel {\em heuristic} algorithm is proposed, the central element of which is a nonlinear transformation $\psi(p)=\log(p/(1-p))$ of the probability $p$ that a pixel of the sought image be 1-valued. It consists of backprojections based on $\psi(p)$ and iterative corrections. Application of this algorithm to a series of artificial test cases leads to exact binary reconstructions, (i.e recovery of the binary image for each single pixel) from the knowledge of projection data over a few directions. Images up to $10^6$ pixels are reconstructed in a few seconds. A series of test cases is performed for comparison with previous methods, showing a better efficiency and reduced computation times.
