Abstract

We have searched for solar axions or other pseudoscalar particles that couple to two photons by using the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) setup. Whereas we previously have reported results from CAST with evacuated magnet bores (Phase I), setting limits on lower mass axions, here we report results from CAST where the magnet bores were filled with \hefour gas (Phase II) of variable pressure. The introduction of gas generated a refractive photon mass $m_\gamma$, thereby achieving the maximum possible conversion rate for those axion masses \ma that match $m_\gamma$. With 160 different pressure settings we have scanned \ma up to about 0.4 eV, taking approximately 2 h of data for each setting. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun, we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of $\gag\lesssim 2.17\times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ at 95% CL for $\ma \lesssim 0.4$ eV, the exact result depending on the pressure setting. The excluded parameter range covers realistic axion models with a Peccei-Quinn scale in the neighborhood of $f_{\rm a}\sim10^{7}$ GeV. Abstract

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of an LHC dipole. The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first results on the $^{4}{\rm He}$ data taking as well as the system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the experiment for the $^{3}{\rm He}$ data taking. Expected sensitivities on the coupling constant of axions to photons will be given for the recent $^{3}{\rm He}$ run just started in March 2008., Comment: Proceedings of the ICHEP 2008 conference

Abstract

We have started the development of a detector system, sensitive to single photons in the eV energy range, to be suitably coupled to one of the CAST magnet ports. This system should open to CAST a window on possible detection of low energy Axion Like Particles emitted by the sun. Preliminary tests have involved a cooled photomultiplier tube coupled to the CAST magnet via a Galileian telescope and a switched 40 m long optical fiber. This system has reached the limit background level of the detector alone in ideal conditions, and two solar tracking runs have been performed with it at CAST. Such a measurement has never been done before with an axion helioscope. Abstract

Optical pumping, with a copper vapor laser, has been used to state select ground 2S1/2 and metastable 2D5/2 and 2D3/2 copper atoms in a fast flow, low pressure reactor combined with a hollow cathode sputtering source. The absolute densities of these atoms (around 2×1011 and 109 atoms cm-3 for 2S and 2D, respectively) were measured by resonant absorption and laser induced fluorescence techniques. Their isolated reactions with F2 have been studied in detail at 300 K. The total reaction cross section for Cu(2S) is almost four times larger than for Cu*(2D) metastable atoms. The strong chemiluminescent emission from electronically excited CuF* formed is attributed to the reaction of metastable Cu*(2D) atoms, the Cu(2S) reaction leading directly to ground state CuF(X 1Σ+) molecules. Spectral analysis of the chemiluminescence shows a highly inverted vibrational distribution in all energetically accessible excited states: a 3Σ+, b 3Π, B 1Σ+, C 1Π, and D 3Δ1 of CuF with =≊0.7. Branching ratios for formation of the molecules in these states have been determined for reaction of copper atoms in each of the three electronic states. From the highest vibrational levels populated by reaction of Cu*(2D5/2) with F2, vmax=21 and 26 for C 1Π and b 3Π states, respectively, one can deduce a more precise value of 33 560±240 cm-1 for the dissociation energy of the ground state CuF(X 1Σ+). The strong propensity observed for formation of CuF*(a,b,B,C,D) by Cu*(2D,3d94s2)+F2 and CuF(X 1Σ+) by Cu(2S,3d104s)+F2 reactions can be explained by conservation of the copper atom ionic core throughout the course of the reaction. Abstract

The CAST experiment at CERN is the only running solar axion telescope. The first results obtained so far with CAST-PHASE I is presented, which compete with the best astrophysically derived limits of the axion-to-photon coupling. The ongoing PHASE II of the experiment as well as the scheduled upgrades, which improve the axion discovery potential of CAST, are discussed.

Abstract

CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) is a helioscope looking for axions coming from the solar core to the Earth. The experiment, located at CERN, is based on the Primakoff effect and uses a magnetic field of 9 Tesla provided by a decommissioned LHC magnet. CAST is able to follow the Sun during sunrise and sunset and therefore three X-ray detectors are mounted on both ends of the magnet waiting for a photon from axion-to-photon conversion due to the Primakoff effect. During its first phase, which concluded in 2004, CAST has been looking for axions with masses up to 0.02 eV. CAST’ s second phase manages to re-establish the coherence needed to scan for axions with masses up to 1.16 eV by using a buffer gas. This technique enables the experiment to look into the theoretical regions for axions. During the years 2005 and 2006, the use of 4He in CAST has already provided coherence in order to look for axions with masses up to 0.4 eV.

Abstract

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is searching for axions produced by the Primakoff process in the solar core. CAST is using a dipole magnet where axions could be converted back into X-rays. Phase I data analysis resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the axionphoton coupling constant for ma .0.02 eV. In CAST Phase II, the sensitivity is extended to higher axion masses. Results of the analysis of 2005 and 2006 data, covering the range ma .0.4 eV, will be presented. Currently CAST is searching for axions with masses up to 1.2 eV.

Abstract

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of a LHC prototype dipole. In the phase II, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet bore apertures in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to larger axion masses. Preliminary results from the analysis of this second phase with He inside the magnet pipes excludes axions down to $g_{aγ}$ < 2.2 · $10^{−10}GeV^{−1}$ at 95% C.L. for 0.02 eV < $m_{\alpha}$ < 0.39 eV. The data analysis has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons and for the first time experimental result has entered the theory motivated axion parameter space. At the beginning of 2008, data started to be taken with He in the magnet pipes in order to extend the sensitivity to axion masses up to 1.2 eV.

Abstract

Abstract: In this study, the dependence of the electrical (τ E), mechanical (τ σ ) life time on electrical strength (E) and mechanical tension (σ) of low density polyethylene composites with commercial diamond additive (LDPE/diamond) at different temperatures are investigated and compared with those of pure LDPE. 50–100μm thick samples with the additive amount varying between 0.1–3% were prepared by using hot pressing method. log τ E−f(E, T), E versus diamond additive percentage are drawn and the determined values of mechanical degradation parameters at constant temperature are listed. Since τ E and τ σ both depend on temperature, electrical degradation mechanism is similar to the mechanical one proving the validity of the thermofluctuation theory. The results indicate that E and σ values reach maximum for 0.5% diamond and are equal to 8.5×107 V/m (6.0×107 V/m for pure LDPE) and 82MPa (68MPa for pure LDPE), respectively which complies with our other studies. Hourly average values of air temperature and daily average soil temperature for the site were used as input parameters. These parameters have been calculated from analytical functions derived by using the hourly and daily temperature values for air and soil data obtained from the local meteorological station in Isparta region, respectively. 6th International Conference of the Balkan-Physical-Union -- AUG 22-26, 2006 -- Istanbul, TURKEY, WOS: 000246647900094, Structural and optical properties of InP films developed with the solutions prepared with InCl3 and Cl2HPO4 salts having different rates by using spraying method have been investigated using the data obtained from UV spectrometer and XRD (x-ray difractometer). Band gap energy values of all samples obtained by using UV spectrometer are found in 1.60-1.85 eV range. It was observed that basic piks of all samples are in (200) plane and have a fee structure in the XRD analysis. Even though four vectors are much more commonly used for this formulation, complex quaternionic formalism presented in this work provides a very useful and elegant representation. From the educational point of view, complex quaternionic representation has some advantages with its simpler and more expressive nature. Unfortunately, four vectors with four real components are not adequate to distinguish quantities that are of a different physical nature. 6th International Conference of the Balkan-Physical-Union -- AUG 22-26, 2006 -- Istanbul, TURKEY, WOS: 000246647900064, The solid-liquid phase transitions of Ar-39 cluster was simulated by the microcanonical Molecular Dynamics (MD) and microcanonical Parallel Tempering (PT) Monte Carlo methods using Lennard-Jones potential, and thermodynamic quantities were calculated. All thermodynamic quantities (configurational entropy, thermodynamic temperature, microcanonical heat capacity, potential energy distribution) were evaluated by using multiple histogram method. The same results were found in both simulation methods. The thermodynamic properties of microcanonical results indicate that the caloric curve has S-dent and the negative heat capacity has negative values at the solid-liquid phase transition region.
