Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) therapy is effective for infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) but can induce immunosuppression. In Japan, Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination, modified in 2013 to reduce osteitis/osteomyelitis risk, coincides with the peak onset age of IESS. This raises concerns about infection risks when administering ACTH therapy post-vaccination. To evaluate the impact of BCG vaccination timing on treatment decisions, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 86 IESS patients at our hospital (1996–2020). Infants who received ACTH therapy within eight weeks of BCG vaccination experienced no serious adverse events. Four patients deferred or opted out of ACTH therapy, with seizure remission taking 2–15 weeks. The overlap between IESS onset and BCG vaccination period presents clinical challenges in determining the appropriate timing for ACTH therapy. Further epidemiological and immunological research is needed to clarify the relationship between ACTH therapy and BCG-associated adverse events and to optimize treatment strategies and vaccination schedules.

Abstract The progression of small bowel ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury causes cells in the intestinal tract to undergo necrosis, necessitating surgical resection, which may result in loss of intestinal function. Therefore, developing therapeutic agents that can prevent IR injury at early stages and suppress its progression is imperative. As IR injury may be closely related to oxidative stress, antioxidants can be effective therapeutic agents. Our silicon (Si)-based agent, an antioxidant, generated a large amount of hydrogen in the intestinal tract for a prolonged period after oral administration. As it has been effective for ulcerative colitis, renal failure, and IR injury during skin flap transplantation, it could be effective for small intestinal IR injury. Herein, we investigated the efficacy of an Si-based agent in a mouse model of small intestinal IR injury. The Si-based agent suppressed the apoptosis of small intestinal epithelial cells by reducing the oxidative stress induced by IR injury. In addition, the thickness of the mucosal layer in the small intestine of the Si-based agent-administered group was significantly higher than that in the untreated group, revealing that Si-based agent is effective against small intestinal IR injuries. In the future, Si-based agents may improve the success rate of small intestine transplantation.

The food-energy-water nexus (F-E-W) serves as a crucial resource for the sustainability of households, while the efficiency of resource use largely depends on our understanding and management of the nexus including all three factors. Limited research has been conducted on this topic thus far because of the increasing complexity of home technologies and data availability. This study develops an evidence-based system dynamics model for assessing the synergy and trade-offs of the household F-E-W. By applying the system dynamics (SD) methodology, the FEW consumption and generation originating from home appliances were modelled and simulated. The model was applied to an eco-house in Tokyo, and its efficacy was validated with one-year hour-based observations of a home energy management system (HEMS). The findings revealed that water-related and food-related energy use accounted for approximately 55% of the total energy use. In addition, water-related energy use showed high uncertainty, suggesting a management potential of approximately 24% for reduction, and was significantly correlated with household carbon emissions. Moreover, this result verified that the effective management of household energy consumption requires the adept manipulation of the diverse array of energy sources employed for air and water heating, while HEMSs could play a key role in implementation.

Abstract Interstitial pneumonia (IP) is a collective term for diseases whose main lesion is fibrosis of the pulmonary interstitium, and the prognosis associated with acute exacerbation of these conditions is often poor. Therapeutic agents are limited to steroids, immunosuppressants, and antifibrotic drugs, which and have many side effects; therefore, the development of new therapeutic agents is required. Because oxidative stress contributes to lung fibrosis in IP, optimal antioxidants may be effective for the treatment of IP. Silicon (Si)-based agents, when administered orally, can continuously generate a large amount of antioxidant hydrogen in the intestinal tract. Abstract Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a non-specific inflammatory bowel disease that causes ulcers and erosions in the colonic mucosa and becomes chronic with cycles of amelioration and exacerbation. Because its exact etiology remains largely unclear, and the primary therapy is limited to symptomatic treatment, the development of new therapeutic agent for UC is highly desired. Because one of the disease pathogenesis is involvement of oxidative stress, it is likely that an appropriate antioxidant will be an effective therapeutic agent for UC. Our silicon (Si)-based agent, when ingested, allowed for stable and persistent generation of massive amounts of hydrogen in the gastrointestinal tract. We demonstrated the Si-based agent alleviated the mental symptom as well as the gastrointestinal symptoms, inflammation, and oxidation associated with dextran sodium sulfate-induced UC model through Hydrogen and antioxidant sulfur compounds. As the Si-based agent was effective in treating UC in the brain and large intestine of mice, it was considered to be capable of suppressing exacerbations and sustaining remission of UC.

Abstract Unrelated cord blood transplantation (CBT) is an alternative curative option for adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who need allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) but lack an HLA-matched related or unrelated donor. However, large-scale data are lacking on CBT outcomes for unselected adult AML. To investigate the trends of survival and engraftment after CBT over the past 22 years, we retrospectively evaluated the data of patients with AML in Japan according to the time period of CBT (1998–2007 vs 2008–2013 vs 2014–2019). A total of 5504 patients who received single-unit CBT as first allogeneic HCT for AML were included. Overall survival (OS) at 2 years significantly improved over time. The improved OS among patients in ≥ complete remission (CR)3 and active disease at CBT was mainly due to a reduction of relapse-related mortality, whereas among patients in first or second CR at CBT, this was due mainly to a reduction of non-relapse mortality. The trends of neutrophil engraftment also improved over time. This experience demonstrated that the survival and engraftment rate after CBT for this group has improved over the past 22 years.

Abstract Hydrogen is effective against ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury in skin flaps. However, the difficulty of continuously administering a sufficient amount of hydrogen using conventional methods has been an issue in the clinical application of hydrogen-based therapy. An Si-based agent administered orally was previously shown to continuously generate a large amount of hydrogen in the intestinal environment. In this study, we assessed the effect of the Si-based agent on the inhibition of I/R injury in skin flaps using a rat model. In the I/R groups, the vascular pedicle of the abdominal skin flap was occluded for three hours followed by reperfusion. In the I/R + Si group, the Si-based agent was administered perioperatively. After reperfusion, flap survival rate, blood flow, oxidative stress markers, inflammatory markers/findings, and degree of apoptosis were evaluated. Flap survival rate was significantly higher, and histological inflammation, apoptotic cells, oxidative stress markers, and levels of inflammatory cytokine mRNA and protein expression were significantly lower, in the I/R + Si group compared to the I/R group. The Si-based agent suppressed oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammatory reactions resulting from I/R injury, thereby contributing to improvements in skin flap survival.

Abstract Advances in next‐generation sequencing (NGS) technologies since 2005 have revolutionized biological science. One particular application of NGS technologies is to elucidate microbiomes in built environments. We are currently conducting a series of studies on the elucidation and control of mass infection mechanisms based on dynamic measurement of environment microbiomes. The objective of this study is to clarify the dispersion characteristics of oral bacteria in the built environment. Bacterial communities from occupants’ hands and oral cavities, doorknobs, desk and keyboard surfaces, and air in laboratories were investigated in seven Japanese universities. The median relative abundances of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Fusobacteria were 41%, 31%, 12%, 7%, and 3%, respectively. Moreover, the main genera detected were Streptococcus (27.6%), Haemophilus (7.0%), Staphylococcus (5.6%), Neisseria (5.6%), Corynebacterium (4.7%), Rothia (3.2%), Prevotella (3.0%), Fusobacterium (2.6%), Veillonella (1.7%), Leptotrichia (1.7%), Enhydrobacter (1.7%), Lactobacillus (1.3%), Acinetobacter (1.3%), and Actinomyces (1.1%). The oral bacteria Actinomyces, Corynebacterium, Fusobacterium, Haemophilus, Leptotrichia, Neisseria, Prevotella, Rothia, and Streptococcus were observed in indoor air and on surfaces as well as in oral cavities. Furthermore, Prevotella melaninogenica and Rothia mucilaginosa were observed in all samples, including those from hands and oral cavities, doorknobs, desk and PC keyboard surfaces, and air in laboratories, in all seven universities.

Abstract Understanding residual radioactive contamination state and the resulting radiation environment is vital before reconstructing the lives of residents in areas affected by nuclear power plant accidents. In this study, we surveyed the depth profiles of Cs‐137 in three artificially paved ground surfaces: impermeable asphalt, permeable asphalt, and concrete, in areas affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident after a period of 10 years and analyzed the gamma‐ray air dose rate distribution in a two‐story wooden house model surrounded by different ground surfaces using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The air dose rate distribution tendencies within the building for different surrounding ground surfaces were clarified by analyzing the transport of gamma rays emitted from the Cs‐137 in the ground. Moreover, the shielding effect of an ordinal concrete fence on the indoor air dose rate was analyzed. The analysis showed that the indoor air dose rate was higher in an environment with artificial pavement than in that with a soil surface, and even a simple measure, such as installing an ordinal concrete fence, could significantly reduce indoor radiation dose rates.

Intractable facial paralysis has a poor prognosis, and new treatments are required. Facial paralysis results in the decline in the generation of facial expressions and is attributed to several causes. Reactive oxygen species can inhibit peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. Therefore, the administration of an appropriate antioxidant can promote nerve regeneration. Silicon (Si)-based agents can react with water to generate antioxidant hydrogen. Oral administration of Si-based agents can effectively alleviate symptoms of disease models associated with oxidative stress. Thus, we orally administered a Si-based agent to a facial paralysis model mice to investigate whether promotion of nerve regeneration occurred. The combined administration of methylcobalamin (MeCbl) with the Si-based agent was also investigated. The Si-based agent improved the clinical score evaluation of facial paralysis. Electroneuronography and immunostaining showed that the Si-based agent promoted myelination and recovery of facial nerve function. Furthermore, in the drug-administered group, oxidative stress associated with facial nerve injury was reduced more than that in the non-administered group. The clinical score evaluation, neuroregeneration effect, and reduction of oxidative stress were improved in the combination group compared to the single administration group. The Si-based agent could rapidly improve the disappearance of facial expressions by promoting myelin sheath formation and alleviating oxidative stress. Combination therapy with a Si-based agent and MeCbl should improve the prognosis and treatment of intractable facial paralysis.

Anticancer agents can effectively treat several types of cancers but are often limited in clinical settings due to various adverse effects. In particular, nausea and vomiting are serious side effects that markedly reduce the patients' quality of life. Accordingly, the development of novel antiemetic drugs that lack side effects is crucial, given that most conventional antiemetic drugs are known to possess side effects. In addition, reactive oxygen species generated by anticancer agents are involved in nausea and vomiting; hence, appropriate antioxidants might also be effective toward nausea and vomiting.Silicon (Si)-based agents can abundantly generate antioxidant hydrogen in the intestine. Therefore, we assessed whether Si-based agents could be effective against nausea associated with anticancer agents in cisplatin-injected mice. We observed numerous neurons expressing c-Fos protein, a neuronal activity marker, in the nausea-associated regions of the dorsal medulla (area postrema, nuclei of the solitary tract, and dorsal vagal nuclei) 24 h after cisplatin injection. Conversely, mice fed a diet containing 2.5% Si-based agents showed a reduction in c-Fos-positive neurons.These findings revealed that the Si-based agent alleviated cisplatin-induced nausea. Si-based agents demonstrate potent antioxidant effects by producing hydrogen, which has no known side effects and will be a safer antiemetic agent and greatly help improve the quality of life of patients undergoing anticancer drug treatment.

Abstract Background Traditional resource management (TRM) systems develop depending on local conditions, such as climate, culture, and environment. Most studies have focused on the TRM system itself, excluding the people who manage the system, and the relationship between the system and the people. The use of resources and people is intimately linked through the practice of TRM systems on Gau Island and this relationship needs to be understood to advance sustainable resource use. Methods A survey was conducted on the use of medicinal plants on Gau Island, Fiji. Interviews were conducted from September 2013 to January 2015 with knowledgeable members of each community. The types of plants, prescriptions, and health problems were documented, and social and ecological factors affecting the sustainability of TRM of medicinal plants used in each of the 16 villages were statistically analysed by linear regression analysis. Results A total of 58 medicinal plants used on a daily basis to treat 27 health problems were identified on Gau. Two medicinal plants, Botebotekoro (Ageratum conyzoides) and Totodro (Centella asiatica), were used in all districts to treat various health problems. There were contrasts between the villages in the medical lore and prescriptions, and villages often used different traditional treatments than others for the same ailment; therefore, the status and knowledge of medicinal plants have developed distinctly in each village. Geographical and social factors have been suggested as possible reasons for the differences in regional resource utilisation among villages. Statistical analysis of the relationship between the state of TRM and social and ecological factors suggest that community solidarity has a positive impact on the sustainable practice of TRM. This study showed that traditional practices simultaneously contribute to the conservation of the natural environment and the binding of communities. Conclusions The results highlight the importance of understanding how TRM systems can contribute to the conservation of the natural environment. Cultural activities are essential to raise community solidarity, which has led to the sustainable use of natural resources. This suggests that merely documenting the use of medicinal plants is not enough to ensure that the skills and knowledge are passed down to the next generation.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are distinct entities of blood neoplasms, and the exact developmental origin of both neoplasms are considered be heterogenous among patients. However, reports of concurrent LCH and AML are rare. Herein we report a novel case of concurrent LCH and AML which shared same the driver mutations, strongly suggesting a common clonal origin.An 84-year-old female presented with cervical lymphadenopathy and pruritic skin rash on the face and scalp. Laboratory tests revealed pancytopenia with 13% of blasts, elevated LDH and liver enzymes, in addition to generalised lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly by computed tomography. Bone marrow specimens showed massive infiltration of MPO-positive myeloblasts, whereas S-100 and CD1a positive atypical dendritic cell-like cells accounted for 10% of the atypical cells on bone marrow pathology, suggesting a mixture of LCH and AML. A biopsy specimen from a cervical lymph node and the skin demonstrated the accumulation of atypical cells which were positive for S-100 and CD1a. LCH was found in lymph nodes, skin and bone marrow; AML was found in peripheral blood and bone marrow (AML was predominant compared with LCH in the bone marrow).Next generation sequencing revealed four somatic driver mutations (NRAS-G13D, IDH2-R140Q, and DNMT3A-F640fs/-I715fs), equally shared by both the lymph node and bone marrow, suggesting a common clonal origin for the concurrent LCH and AML. Prednisolone and vinblastine were initially given with partial response in LCH; peripheral blood blasts also disappeared for 3 months. Salvage chemotherapy with low dose cytarabine and aclarubicin were given for relapse, with partial response in both LCH and AML. She died from pneumonia and septicemia on day 384. Our case demonstrates a common cell of origin for LCH and AML with a common genetic mutation, providing evidence to support the proposal to classify histiocytosis, including LCH, as a myeloid/myeloproliferative malignancy.

Antioxidant therapy is an effective approach for treating diseases in which oxidative stress is involved in the onset of symptoms. This approach aims to rapidly replenish the antioxidant substances in the body when they are depleted due to excess oxidative stress. Importantly, a supplemented antioxidant must specifically eliminate harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) without reacting with physiologically beneficial ROS, which are important to the body. In this regard, typically used antioxidant therapies can be effective, but may cause adverse effects due to their lack of specificity. We believe that Si-based agents are epoch-making drugs that can overcome these problems associated with current antioxidative therapy. These agents alleviate the symptoms of oxidative-stress-associated diseases by generating large amounts of the antioxidant hydrogen in the body. Moreover, Si-based agents are expected to be highly effective therapeutic drug candidates because they have anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant effects. In this review, we discuss Si-based agents and their potential future applications in antioxidant therapy. There have been several reports of hydrogen generation from silicon nanoparticles, but unfortunately, none have been approved as pharmaceutical agents. Therefore, we believe that our research into medical applications using Si-based agents is a breakthrough in this research field. The knowledge obtained thus far from animal models of pathology may greatly contribute to the improvement of existing treatment methods and the development of new treatment methods. We hope that this review will further revitalize the research field of antioxidants and lead to the commercialization of Si-based agents.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) characterized by impairments in social communication, repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, and hyperesthesia/hypesthesia caused by genetic and/or environmental factors. In recent years, inflammation and oxidative stress have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ASD. In this review, we discuss the inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of ASD, particularly focusing on maternal immune activation (MIA). MIA is a one of the common environmental risk factors for the onset of ASD during pregnancy. It induces an immune reaction in the pregnant mother’s body, resulting in further inflammation and oxidative stress in the placenta and fetal brain. These negative factors cause neurodevelopmental impairments in the developing fetal brain and subsequently cause behavioral symptoms in the offspring. In addition, we also discuss the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs and antioxidants in basic studies on animals and clinical studies of ASD. Our review provides the latest findings and new insights into the involvements of inflammation and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of ASD.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) is triggered by infection or autoimmune predisposition during pregnancy, and cytokines produced by MIA are transmitted through the placenta to the fetal brain, implicating at the onset risks and vulnerability for developmental and psychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. To address these kinds of problem in child health, we have developed a silicon (Si)-based hydrogen-producing antioxidant (Si-based agent) that continuously and effectively produces hydrogen in the body. Medical hydrogen is known to have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects, therefore we applied our Si-based agent as a potential therapeutic agent to MIA. Using a MIA mouse model, we found that the Si-based agent improved the social communication of MIA offspring mice. We also found that the Si-based agent suppressed the expressions of inflammation-associated genes Ifna1 and Il-6 in the mouse brain. These results demonstrate that the Si-based agent is an effective prophylactic agent against MIA during pregnancy, suggesting that our Si-based agent may be a preventative or therapeutic agent for ASD and other disease risks in child health suppressing MIA damage.

Mother-to-child transmission of viruses and bacteria increases the risk of miscarriage and various diseases in children. Such transmissions can result in infections and diseases in infants or the induction of an inflammatory immune response through the placenta. Recently, we developed a silicon (Si)-based hydrogen-producing nanoagent (Si-based agent) that continuously and effectively produces hydrogen in the body. Since medical hydrogen has antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and antiapoptotic effects, we investigated the effects of our Si-based agent on mother-to-child transmission, with a focus on the rate of miscarriage. In pregnant mice fed a diet containing the Si-based agent, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced miscarriage due to mother-to-child transmission was reduced and inflammation and neutrophil infiltration in the placenta were suppressed. We also found that the Si-based agent suppressed IL-6 expression in the placenta and induced the expression of antioxidant and antiapoptotic genes, such as Hmox1 and Ptgs2. The observed anti-inflammatory effects of the Si-based agent suggest that it may be an effective preventative or therapeutic drug for miscarriage or threatened miscarriage during pregnancy by suppressing maternal inflammation caused by bacterial and viral infections.

Organ ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), which is unavoidable in kidney transplantation, induces the formation of reactive oxygen species and causes organ damage. Although the efficacy of molecular hydrogen (H2) in IRI has been reported, oral intake of H2-rich water and inhalation of H2 gas are still not widely used in clinical settings because of the lack of efficiency and difficulty in handling. We successfully generated large quantities of H2 molecules by crushing silicon (Si) to nano-sized Si particles (nano-Si) which were allowed to react with water. The nano-Si or relatively large-sized Si particles (large-Si) were orally administered to rats with renal IRI. Animals were divided into four groups: sham, IRI, IRI + nano-Si, and IRI + large-Si. The levels of serum creatinine and urine protein were significantly decreased 72 h following IRI in rats that were administered nano-Si. The levels of oxidative stress marker, urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine were also significantly decreased with the nano-Si treatment. Transcriptome and gene ontology enrichment analyses showed that the oral nano-Si intake downregulated the biological processes related to oxidative stress, such as immune response, cytokine production, and extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway. Alterations in the regulation of a subset of genes in the altered pathways were validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that the nano-Si treatment alleviated interstitial macrophage infiltration and tubular apoptosis, implicating the anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of nano-Si. In conclusion, renal IRI was attenuated by the oral administration of nano-Si, which should be considered as a novel H2 administration method.

The formation of crystalline anatase films having important applications such as photocatalysis, solar cells, electrochromic applications, and bio-implants requires time-consuming multiple processes including heat treatments. In this paper, ultra-rapid formation of a crystalline anatase film on a tin substrate is realized by a cathodic deposition method, which is performed only for 3 s in an aqueous solution containing TiF62− at 60 °C without any heat treatment. The deposited nanocrystalline anatase film of ~90 nm thickness contains high concentration of tin species derived from the substrate metal and shows superhydrophilicity after UV light irradiation. The process utilized in this study provides a novel annealing-free approach for the rapid formation of a photoactive crystalline anatase film on heat-labile substrates. Silicon nanocrystalline particles (ncSi) were fabricated from the Si swarf using the beads milling method. Observed photoluminiscence spectra (PL) of the ncSi in hexane with the dimethylanthracene molecules (DMA) show photoluminescence peaks at energies of 2.55, 2.75, 2.92, and 3.09 eV. The shape of PL spectra corresponds to the vibronic structure of adsorbed DMA molecules. The PL intensity of the ncSi-DMA system increases by ~3000 times by adsorption of DMA on Si nanoparticles. The PL enhancement results from an increase in absorption probability of incident light by DMA caused by adsorption on the surface of ncSi. Theoretical model of the PL experiment was constructed and resulting model parameters were used in analysis of possible PL transitions and charge transfer processes.

Conventional acidic etching cannot form low reflectance surfaces from multi-crystalline silicon (multi-Si) wafers sawn by fixed abrasive (FXA) machining technology, which makes it difficult to replace the time- and cost-consuming free abrasive (FRA) machining method. In the present work, a nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si) layer is formed by use of the surface structure chemical transfer (SSCT) method, and the layer is used as a starting point of alkaline etching to fabricate low reflectance submicron texture on FXA multi-Si wafers. Although the nc-Si layer cannot be passivated by deposition of a silicon nitride (SiN) layer, the submicron textured surface formed from the nc-Si layer by alkaline etching can effectively be passivated by the SiN layer. Using the developed method, the SiN passivated submicron textured FXA multi-Si wafers possess both high minority carrier lifetime and lower reflectance than that of acidic textured FRA multi-Si wafers. The excellent passivation effect of the SiN layer on the low reflectance textured surface is attributed to the low interface state density of 1.2×1011 cm-2eV-1.

The initial reaction of Si nanopowder with water to generate hydrogen is investigated using FT-IR and XPS measurements. Si nanopowder is fabricated using the simple beads milling method. For HF-etched Si nanopowder, strong peaks due to Si-H and Si-H2 stretching vibrational modes and a weak shoulder peak due to Si-H3 are observed. Although no peaks due to oxide is observed in the Si 2p XPS spectrum, weak vibrational peaks due to HSiO2 and HSiO3 species are observable. The hydrogen generation rate greatly increases with pH, indicating that the reacting species is hydroxide ions (OH− ions). After the reaction, the intensities of the peaks due to SiH and SiH2 species decrease while those for HSiO, HSiO2, and HSiO3 species increase. This result demonstrates that OH− ions attack Si back-bonds, with surface Si-H bonds remaining. After initial reaction of HF-etched Si nanopowder with heavy water, vibrational peaks for SiD, SiDH, and SiDH2 appear, and then, a peak due to DSiO3 species is observed, but no peaks due to DSiO2 and DSiO species are observable. This result indicates that SiD, SiDH, and SiDH2 species are formed by substitution reactions, followed by oxidation of back-bonds to form DSiO3 species. After immersion in D2O for a day, 37% H atoms on the surface are replaced to D atoms.

The set of MOS structures formed on n-type Si substrate with (NAOS)-SiO2/HfO2 gate dielectric layers was prepared and annealed in N2 atmosphere at various temperatures to stabilize the structure and to decrease the interface states density. Two Acoustic DLTS techniques using both surface (SAW) and longitudinal (LAW) acoustic waves including acoustoelectric response signal versus gate voltage dependence (Uac-Ug characteristics) were used to characterize the interface states and the role of annealing treatment. The main interface deep centers with activation energies about 0.30 and 0.20 eV, typical for dangling bonds were observed as well as a particular influence of annealing treatment on the interface states. The obtained results are analyzed, discussed and mutually compared.

In Parkinson’s Disease (PD), the peripheral changes in the functional capacity and redox state of immune cells has been scarcely investigated, especially in the early PD stages. Aging is a risk factor for PD, and the age-related impairment of the immune system, based on a chronic-oxidative stress situation, is involved in the rate of aging. We analyzed several functions in isolated peripheral blood neutrophils and mononuclear cells from PD stage 2 patients, and compared the results to those in healthy elderly and adult controls. Several oxidative stress and damage parameters were studied in whole blood cells. The results showed an impairment of the lymphoproliferative response in stimulated conditions in the PD patients compared with age-matched controls, who also showed typical immunosenescence in comparison with adult individuals. Higher oxidative stress and damage were observed in whole blood cells from PD patients (lower glutathione peroxidase activity, and higher oxidized glutathione and malondialdehyde contents). Our results suggest an accelerated immunosenescence in PD stage 2, and that several of the parameters studied could be appropriate peripheral biomarkers in the early stages of PD.

The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) assay is a basic hemostatic assay based on the time it takes for clots to form in plasma samples after the addition of calcium chloride. It is used to screen for various coagulation disorders. Several previous reports have suggested that magnesium (Mg) might contribute to coagulation reactions by binding to specific coagulation proteins. We investigated the effects of Mg on the APTT. In healthy controls, the APTT was significantly prolonged in proportion to the increase in the concentration of magnesium chloride in the range from 2.1 to 16.7 mmol/L. Among eight samples from patients with various disorders that exhibited prolonged APTT, two samples demonstrated shorter APTT when Mg was added, both of which were from patients that were positive for lupus anticoagulant. Surface morphology evolution is of primary significance for the thin-film growth and modification of surface andinterface states. Surface and interface states substantially influence the electrical and optical properties of the semiconductorstructure. Statistical and fractal properties of semiconductor rough surfaces were determined by analysis of the AFM images.In this paper statistical characteristics of the AFM height function distribution, fractal dimension, lacunarity and granulometric density values are used for the surface morphology of the SiC samples description. The results can be used for solution ofthe microstructural and optical properties of given semiconductor structure.

Neural crest cells generate numerous derivatives, including pigment cells, and are a model for studying how fate specification from multipotent progenitors is controlled. In mammals, the core gene regulatory network for melanocytes (their only pigment cell type) contains three transcription factors, Sox10, Pax3 and Mitf, with the latter considered a master regulator of melanocyte development. In teleosts, which have three to four pigment cell types (melanophores, iridophores and xanthophores, plus leucophores e.g. in medaka), gene regulatory networks governing fate specification are poorly understood, although Mitf function is considered conserved. Here, we show that the regulatory relationships between Sox10, Pax3 and Mitf are conserved in zebrafish, but the role for Mitf is more complex than previously emphasized, affecting xanthophore development too. Similarly, medaka Mitf is necessary for melanophore, xanthophore and leucophore formation. Furthermore, expression patterns and mutant phenotypes of pax3 and pax7 suggest that Pax3 and Pax7 act sequentially, activating mitf expression. Pax7 modulates Mitf function, driving co-expressing cells to differentiate as xanthophores and leucophores rather than melanophores. We propose that pigment cell fate specification should be considered to result from the combinatorial activity of Mitf with other transcription factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
