21. Na-ion dynamics in Quasi-1D compound NaV2O4

Abstract

We have used the pulsed muon source at ISIS to study high-temperature Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic antiferromagnet NaV2O4. By performing systematic zero-field and longitudinal-field measurements as a function of temperature we clearly distinguish that the hopping rate increases exponentially above Tdiff=250 K. The data is well fitted to an Arrhenius type equation typical for a diffusion process, showing that the Na-ions starts to be mobile above Tdiff . Such results makes this compound very interesting for the tuning of Q1D magnetism using atomic-scale ion-texturing through the periodic potential from ordered Na-vacancies. 34. From Hospitality to Hostility : Impact of the Rohingya Refugee Influx on the Sentiments of Host Communities

Abstract

In 2017, Bangladesh received a sudden influx of Muslim Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar. While the predominantly Muslim host communities initially expressed sympathy for the refugees, the prolonged stay substantially affected their livelihoods, and public sentiment gradually deteriorated. Using an incentivized joy-of-destruction game, we found that as many as 58% of the hosts paid to reduce support for the refugees. Our regression analysis revealed that the more exposed hosts paid significantly more but were not more likely to express negative opinions toward the refugees. This contrast indicates that the incentivized experiment elicited real (not cosmetic) hostility toward the outgroup.

35. FDI, production networks and firm behaviour: Evidence from the South African automotive industry.

Abstract

Firms in developing countries can learn advanced technology and management know‐how through foreign direct investment (FDI). The extent (or the lack) of transmission of technology and knowledge depends on the structure of production networks. In the automotive industry, networks consist of vehicle assemblers and their layers of parts suppliers. We used the South African automotive industry as a case study to examine how the behaviour of assemblers and parts suppliers is linked. Based on statistical analysis using the original firm‐level data, we found that the first‐tier suppliers significantly increased their production with the regional expansion of automotive production. However, such growth linkages were not observed among lower‐tier suppliers. Further, we obtained the suggestive evidence that only multinational (and not local) first‐tier firms improved their production efficiency, indicating the importance of production networks among multinationals in transmitting technology.
