The article dwells on the results obtained via examining risks of innovative entrepreneurship in the music industry. During the COVID‐19 pandemic and lockdown media communications and digitalization of the cultural sphere were developing rapidly, that provoked spreading of innovative entrepreneurial initiatives in international practice. There were created digital services for online attendance of music concerts that promoted social and cultural inclusion. In Russia this direction is just beginning to emerge, separate projects providing digital services for organizing and promoting virtual concert activities are appearing in the domestic business. Relevance. The limited knowledge about Russian practices in innovative entrepreneurship and existing barriers to the music industry development. Methods. A pilot online survey of the digital concerts target audience – representatives of young people aged 16 to 30 years (N=291) was conducted. Expert interviews were held with the organizers and managers of the business project, the LookPort streaming platform, which is the leader of interactive broadcasting and creative streaming solutions in Russia, Great Britain and European countries. Results. It was revealed that the most significant commercial risks are formed by consumers of new services and are caused by two main reasons. The first is difficulties of mastering technical features and the second is the sociopsychological effects of their use. Limited possibilities of interactive emotional communication do not allow the audience to feel involved in performance and realize their needs for emotional and physical collective expression. The key resources for overcoming emerging risks are the educational and managerial competencies of entrepreneurs, skills of using modern marketing tools to create a positive user experience.

High-tech employees, need to manage their emotions on a daily basis, given their interactions with culturally different colleagues; nonetheless, they are not given much direction about such issues. Based on interviews with 75 Israeli workers employed by 25 high-tech companies, this study explains the display rules in high-tech organizations and the ways employees learn to manage their emotions. The results indicate that high-tech, global team employees engage regularly in emotional labor with co-workers while experiencing tremendous difficulties. Concurrently, their organizations do not communicate clear and detailed display rules such that the employees tend to learn about emotional labor, either independently via observation of others or via hard-earned experience. In addition to the emotional-rational dichotomy that has been discussed previously, we have identified individualism and personal responsibility as key premises explaining minimal or the absence of explicit display rules, and the ways that individuals learn emotional labor. The study examines the iss ues of assessing the impact of the technology of robotization and automation of business processes on the modern economic system and on enterprises in the field of high information technologies. The hypothesis is put forward, according to which the introduction of RPA technologies can significantly reduce the costs of companies for the organization and implementation of manual labor by delegating such labor to the described technologies. The relevance of the research is due to the growing influence of RPA technologies on the business processes of companies, the structure of their costs and revenues, as well as the outstanding financial results of companies that have implemented business process automation technologies. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness and expediency of the use of robotization of business processes by domestic companies. During the analytical activity, a strong relationship was revealed between the growth of the RPA technology market and the dynamics of the financial assessment of companies related to the field of business process automation. A sociological survey was also conducted, the purpose of which was to find out the level of popularity of RPA among people, their opinions about automation technologies, confidence in such services and the desire to use the technologies under study in their own lives. The research uses general scientific methods: analysis, synthesis, sociological survey, correlation analysis, as well as a systematic approach. As a result of the study, the hypothesis was confirmed, proving that modern companies should implement RPA technologies in order to withstand competition by reducing costs. The sociological survey showed that the vast majority of respondents are familiar with RPA technologies and trust them to a certain extent. A large percentage of respondents stated their readiness to use automation, which gives companies access to new horizons of opportunities due to the likely increase in people’s confidence in automation tools. Recommendations were given to domestic companies on the introduction of robotics into the business structure and the prospects for improving labor productivity at all levels of the company were described. The above measures may also be the result of changes in the company’s recruitment policy and the system of training and introduction of new personnel.

This study investigates the changes in team composition in four academic high-tech start-ups and spin-offs. These companies were initiated on academic grounds and had to undergo transition in order to act as private companies. For human resources of all kinds this goes along with a change in the requirements of their skills and their work. This pilot study focused on four high-tech start-ups from Germany and Slovakia that are active and still in transition in the year 2021. Data was obtained with qualitative research methods from managers that were in charge during the transition of the company. During expert interviews, the researchers used semi-structured questionnaires in order to gather data from the managers on particular aspects of spin-off team member skills and requirements. The qualitative results obtained from the managers were compared, showing that with fundamental changes in the business objectives of the company the required management skills and team composition changes from an academic skills portfolio towards a private-sector portfolio. Likewise, a change in the human resource hiring strategy of the spin-offs was found in that stage. However, research also showed that spin-offs seem to undergo two transition phases during their way from an academic research group towards a company based on free market principles. Creating futurological projects and their corresponding analytics causes a wide resonance in public discourse around the world. A globalized society firmly links the content of possible future projects to develop and implement high-order technologies. The argument is substantiated that the creation of various scenarios of humanity’s fate is carried out within a particular ideological doctrine framework. The comprehension of potential transformations’ causal connections is carried out according to the principles and categories that are already known to world philosophy. At the same time, social reality, significantly modified under the influence of high technologies, produces original ethical and legal ontradictions, for the resolution of which either a significant categorical analysis of the connection between humanity and technology or the creation of a fundamentally new paradigm for the analysis of these relationships is required.

The strategy process literature studies how strategies are formed in firms, but underemphasizes the role of firms' internal capabilities. Conversely, the resource-based view (RBV), and the dynamic capabilities view (DCV) emphasizes the role of firms' internal capabilities but underplays the role of strategy processes. In response to these gaps, this study empirically examines the relationship between strategy processes, organizational capabilities, and firm performance, using the theoretical lenses of RBV and DCV. Specifically, three research models have been constructed: The base model tested the relationship between strategy processes, organizational capabilities, and firm performance. The second model dwelled further deep into the first half of the base model and emphasized the complexities arising from the combination of different strategy processes, and the combination of different organizational capabilities. The last model concentrated on the second half of the base model, with a particular focus on the comparison of ordinary and dynamic capabilities strength. Based on survey data from 260 Indian high-tech firms, the thesis finds broad support for all the three models. These results inform the strategy process literature of the importance of organizational capabilities as the mediator between strategy processes and firm performance, responding to long-standing demands for the introduction of a mediating variable between this relationship. They enhance ambidexterity literature as they show how firms align ambidexterity at strategy process and organizational capabilities level, thus, listening to recent calls for providing strategic antecedents of organizational ambidexterity. They also contribute to RBV and DCV literature by cautioning against any exalted position given to dynamic capabilities, which helps settle the on-going debate on the abilities of different capabilities to generate competitive advantage. Overall, the findings suggest that to improve firms' profitability and growth; managers need to employ different types of strategy processes that take into account both ordinary and dynamic capabilities in technological and marketing functions.

Europe is transforming its energy balance and increasing the use of local renewable energy sources. Russia's economy depends on the export of fossil (non-renewable) energy resources. About half of the country's energy resources are exported, primarily to European countries. A change in the fuel and energy balance of European countries, as the main consumer of Russian energy resources, will affect the Russian economy. Therefore, Russia urgently needs to know the state of alternative energy in Europe. The purpose of this article is to assess the growth rate of the share of innovative alternative energy sources in the energy balance of Germany and Denmark, as leading countries. The background for the implementation of energy policy in the field of alternative energy is different. First of all, these are countries with developed economies. They need a reliable, uninterrupted supply of energy sources. The Danish government was the first among European countries to evaluate the potential of alternative energy and began to develop it. Denmark is the first country in Europe to use wind energy to generate electricity. In 1991, the first offshore wind energy plant in Europe appeared in Denmark. Germany started the construction of wind power parks only in 2008. Nevertheless, today Germany, along with China and the United States, is among the top three world leaders in terms of wind power capacity, and also has become one of the world leaders in terms of the total installed capacity of solar panels. In absolute terms, characterizing the development of alternative energy, Germany is the world leader, in relative terms - Denmark. Germanys economy is many times larger than Denmarks. Therefore, Germany cannot rebuild the fuel structure of its economy as fast as Denmark. The Danish leadership has set ambitious goals for the development of alternative energy. In 2050, 100% of the energy supplied to end consumers will be generated from renewable sources. Germany cannot rebuild its economy with this fast pace. In Germany in 2050, the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption will be 60%. Germany, unlike Denmark, initially relied not on the development of alternative energy, but on the development of nuclear energy. However, through consistent energy policies, it has become a world leader in alternative energy use. When Germany began to implement energy policy, it already had a prototype - Denmark. But then, as the study showed, the country chose its own path. And then Germany and Denmark developed alternative energy in different ways. Nowadays the international cooperation has a great importance. Germany and Denmark collaborate in regional and transregional projects in terms of renewable energy sources. North Sea Wind Power Hub is a successful example of their work together. The experience of Germany and Denmark has shown that alternative energy development programs do not exist by themselves. The alternative energy development program is only part of several other related programs. Among them are programs on the rejection of the use of nuclear energy (in relation to Germany), measures to increase the energy efficiency of economies, construction of infrastructure, changes in the organizational structure of energy, etc. Nowadays, many countries in the world pursue an energy policy in the field of renewable energy. In 2009, Russia also committed to increase the share of alternative energy sources to 4.5% by 2020. In the implementation of this policy, it is necessary to take into account the experience of Western countries. The difficulties faced by countries in the new energy sector do not allow us to talk about a decrease in their dependence on energy imports.

The rapid growth of tech company headquarters such as Apple, Facebook, and Google could potentially put new pressure on the housing market in adjacent residential neighborhoods, in the form of housing price appreciation and real estate speculation. This article examines the relationship between the big tech corporate campuses and Silicon Valley/San Francisco housing markets using the Zillow (ZTRAX) transaction and tax assessor data. The authors compare real estate activity adjacent to new company locations with activity in nearby areas, conducting a difference-in-differences analysis to estimate changes in housing prices and speculation. They find that housing prices increase overall by an additional 7.1% in the immediate vicinity of the tech campus 2 years after arrival, with wide variation across campuses. The authors also identify significant real estate speculation occurring prior to firms' arrival. This suggests that cities should take a proactive role in mitigating tech firm impacts on vulnerable adjacent neighborhoods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blockchain technology was born with the bitcoin cryptocurrency and has been seen as a revolutionary technology since it became possible to design smart contracts and tokens based on it. It has been possible to export this innovation to the most diverse fields, including the culture and entertainment industry and media. However, and after six years of deve- loping different models to incorporate blockchain into journalism, an integrated model to act as a reference in this field is still lacking. After analyzing and grouping the wide potential of blockchain in journalism into so-called regimes, this work points out both promising and failed projects in each of the three regimes proposed, viz. registration, economic, and organizational. It is concluded that, despite the very interesting developments regarding the registration regime and intellectual property protection, on the one hand, and economic regime and tokenization, on the other, the inherent decentralized configuration of blockchain currently represents a large obstacle to the construction of an integrated model for its use in journalism. Urbanization and extreme weather require smarter urban water management. Nature-based solutions (NBS) like vegetated roofs and city trees can contribute effectively to climate resilience and future proof urban water management. However, large scale implementation is limited due to a lack of knowledge among professionals on how to capture, store, and reuse water on-site. In this paper we advocate a classification into no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech green, thereby supporting urban designers to better utilize the ability of these green elements to effectively manage water flows in different urban settings. Here, “no tech” green is considered traditional urban green, handling (rain) water like nature would. “Low-tech” green (e.g., extensive Sedum roofs) are suitable for dense urban settings with limited demand for water management and ecosystem services. More developed “high-tech” green solutions have vegetation performing even beyond natural capacities, offering full water management control options and enable city planners, architects and landscape designers to enhance urban resilience and circularity without claiming valuable urban space. We elaborate our “tech NBS” approach for city trees and vegetated roofs thereby demonstrating the classification's added value for sustainable urban design. We conclude that specifying the demanded “no/low/high” -tech level of green infrastructure in urban design plans will help to yield the most of ecosystem services using appropriate levels of available technology.

Modern market economies are characterized by the reallocation of resources from less productive, less valuable activities to more productive, more valuable ones. Businesses in the High Tech sector play a particularly important role in this reallocation by introducing new products and services that impact the entire economy. In this paper we describe an extension to the Census Bureau's Business Dynamics Statistics that tracks job creation, job destruction, startups, and exits by firm and establishment characteristics, including sector, firm age, and firm size in the High Tech sector. We preview the resulting statistics, showing the structural shifts in the High Tech sector over the past 30 years, including the surge of entry and young firm activity in the 1990s that reversed abruptly in the early‐2000s. • Europe's "2020 Strategy" stresses the role of high-tech sectors and high-skilled workers. • The relationship between growth, technology and skills is statistically insignificant. • We investigate a theoretical setup that connects these facts. • We extend a directed-technical-change growth model and take it to the data. • We highlight the relevance of high relative barriers to entry in the high-tech sector. Europe's "2020 Strategy" has the main goal of stimulating economic growth by increasing the weight of the high-tech sector and the share of high-skilled workers. However, cross-country European data suggests the relationship between economic growth and both the technology structure and the skill structure is statistically insignificant. We investigate an analytical mechanism that connects these facts by extending a directed-technical-change growth model and taking it to the data. Under high relative barriers to entry into the high-tech sector and scale effects we replicate the empirical relationships. We derive quantitative policy implications on the effects of a reduction of barriers to entry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the influence of the customer-value hierarchy model and social network on the perceived economic value of high-tech consumer products. This quantitative empirical study was conducted among Finnish households in early 2008 using the form interview method. The non-probability quota sampling method was applied. The data consisted of 453 completed questionnaires. Hypothesis testing was conducted by linear multiple regression analysis. Goal-, consequence-, and attribute-level value perceptions were found to have a positive effect on the perceived economic value of high-tech consumer products. Attribute-level value had the strongest effect on the formation of perceived economic value. Although the network effect was found to contribute positively to perceived economic value, the opinions of others in the consumer's social network had a negative effect. Consumers seem to rationalise the buying decision with personal factors, while social factors have a background effect on value perceptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we determine the “dynamic revealed competitiveness position” (DRCP) of nations for high technology exports between 1980 and 2005. We find that the developed world has lost significant market share in high technology and that China has climbed the high technology ladder during this period. In 1980 China was ranked 99th of all nations in terms of the percentage of global exports in high technology. By 2005 China climbed to second place in the world, first place if high technology exports from Hong Kong are included. We also find that close to 95 percent of all of Latin American and Caribbean countries’ (LAC’s) exports are under some sort of “threat” from China, comprising almost 12 percent of total exports from LAC. This is most pronounced in Mexico and Costa Rica, where over 87 percent of all high technology exports are under threat and where such exports represent over 24 percent of total exports in both countries. Most of these trends become very accentuated during the period 2000 to 2005, when one could most make the case that China is “taking away the ladder” from LAC.

Are U.S. digital markets advancing, or threatening, the American economy? There is keen interest in the answer to this question. Sweeping changes have disrupted society courtesy of the Information Revolution, presenting great opportunities in radically transformed economic markets but also great challenges in adapting to new and different forms of organization. Great hope accompanies the former, much concern attends the latter. Now important discussions are engaging as to the impacts of market power, where competitive forces – beneficial in discovering new efficiencies and promoting Consumer Welfare – may be thwarted. Antitrust laws and other elements of competition policy are being re-examined. This paper attempts to inform the answers to these questions by examining industrial concentration in the information economy and its impact on U.S. market competition; vertical integration in digital platforms; forces driving innovation in business models and product markets; and the use of competition policy tools in high tech markets. These latter include broadband access and mobile phone industries, which have attracted attention as specific examples of areas where the U.S. has is seen by some as lagging rival economies due to insufficient antitrust enforcement.

This study uses institutional theory and the "Technopolis" wheel to investigate the movement of technology entrepreneurs and why they "stick" to well-established entrepreneurial ecosystems in Silicon Valley, Austin, Boston, and New York City. We detail the historical development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in each location, with a particular focus on the institutions and support structures that link and sustain key resources that are central to technology clusters. We operationalize key segments of the Technopolis wheel including (1) networks and connectedness, (2) investment capital, and (3) innovation and R&D. The empirical analysis specifies models testing for location-specific variation in the influence of these factors on entrepreneur location choice. We supplement this with analysis of interview data from 45 technology entrepreneurs with direct experience in these locations. We find that higher degrees of connectedness in Austin and Silicon Valley are an important factor in retaining potential entrepreneurs and several institutions were linked to facilitating tie formation and accessing key resources within the Technopolis. We also find that the frequency of funding opportunities positively influences entrepreneurs moving to Austin, Boston, and Silicon Valley to immediately start a company. In Boston, we find a positive association between patents and staying in Boston to launch a startup and we find that older entrepreneurs living in New York and Silicon Valley are less likely to remain and start a company. • Silicon Valley, Austin, and Boston are top three entrepreneurial hubs. • Silicon Valley and Austin startups are enabled by local connectedness. • Boston startups are influenced by the innovation in the city. • New York startups are created by younger entrepreneurs. • Big data can help us parameterize the key segments in Technopolis wheel. With the diversity of customer needs and complexity of technology innovation, many high-tech small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) turn to open innovation, to produce the perfect match between market demands and firm resources. However, questions still exist in relation to open innovation in SMEs. Based on a framework combining both inbound and outbound open innovation with the four-stage new product development (NPD) process, this article explores the open innovation strategies adopted by high-tech SMEs in emerging economies for NPD and the reasons behind it through case studies. Results show that high-tech SMEs in emerging economies selectively adopt open innovation for NPD at different stages with various partners based on their needs. High-tech SMEs prefer to be closed to protect the know-how at the experimentation stage. Regarding the open innovation strategy, at ideation stage, SMEs adopt inbound open innovation for basic research and customer knowledge, while at manufacturing and commercialization stages, SMEs conduct both inbound and outbound open innovation. The analysis raises awareness of customer knowledge and customization to high-tech SMEs for NPD. This article contributes to the theories and practices on open innovation in SMEs.

Abstract Modern technology has greatly affected buildings' envelope, which has a significant impact on the environmental considerations, users comfort and energy consumption. The paper addresses the subject of buildings' envelopes and the external skin configurations, due to its importance as the first element facing the external environment. The contemporary studies of the environmental sustainability have made such a topic quite significant, especially in the context addressed in the research: residential buildings in Alexandria, Egypt. Such a domain has recently generated a broad debate and drawn increased attention among those involved in the design and management processes, owing to the problem of the increasing energy consumption, especially in the residential buildings, which is accompanied by a noticeable lack of awareness among both the designers and householders about the most suitable technology for building envelopes. The aim of this paper is to test some variables of design and construction, so as to determine the appropriate technology for the environmentally-efficient envelopes of the residential buildings. The presented ideas could be of some significance in formulating useful and applied guidelines in the field of architectural design and re-design of residential buildings/projects. The research introduces a comparative discourse of a literature review covering the different definitions and notions of "Low Technology" and "High Technology", followed by a direct application on a case-specific context. Based on a systematic analysis using an Energy Plus simulation tool, the study concludes a set of statements and guidelines for designers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Many low resourced low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) do not have access to (high tech) developments in the medical field. The aim of this study is to research how a contemporary high-tech solution, such as customized medical implants, can be transferred to low resource LMICs. Materials and methods We explored the internet to retrieve data regarding internet coverage, services providing free email accounts, and the availability of connecting devices. Additionally, a computerized search was performed for currently available PSI concepts and other important emerging technologies with potential value in craniomaxillofacial surgery. Lastly, we searched the internet for the availability of CT scan devices and smartphones in the LMICs. Results Internet penetration and access to computers/smartphones is low in the LMICs. Moreover, availability of radiology departments and radiologists is very limited (60 radiologists per 190 million Nigerian inhabitants) and a lack of knowledge concerning import regulations and customs clearance, limits the accessibility/availability for patient-specific implants, since this is crucial in developing and delivering these devices. Lastly, appropriate training and instrumentation are vital (yet, currently difficult) to acquire and foresee, in order to achieve the best post-operative results. Conclusion This research confirms great difficulties achieving our aims but with persistence and adoption of well-constructed programs it should be possible.

The most important aspect of the transition to the knowledge society is the interaction of science and industry. The article considers the triple helix theory as a basis for managing the innovative economy. The interaction of science and business can provide Russia with larger incomes, especially provided the state participation in the countrys innovative economic development. The authors analyze official documents regulating the cooperation of universities, research institutions and innovative enterprises, and the features of financing this cooperation. The article is based on the databases of the monitoring research of the Institute of Sociology of FCTAS RAS Continuous education and knowledge- intensive industries: Institutions and practices of interaction which was conducted with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation. On the basis of 100 expert interviews conducted in 2017- 2019 in 12 regions of the Russian federal districts with key figures of innovation processes (chief engineers, leading designers, rectors, ministers, heads of development institutions, venture funds, technoparks and special economic zones), the authors describe the practices of interaction of scienceintensive companies with other participants of the innovative economy. In the framework of the triple helix theory, the authors consider the interaction of knowledge-intensive enterprises with higher educational institutions, the main challenges these enterprises face, investment legislation and risks of investment in scientific research. The authors argue that the state policy in this field needs a network of subjects that would ensure a dialogue between the state, science, business and education at different stages of creating and promoting innovative products. The authors also consider some issues of the development of innovation infrastructure, and possibilities of using the experience of other countries.

Despite the influence that industry has on organizational outcomes, there remains a shortage of research regarding the interaction between an entrepreneur's human capital (prior startup experience) and venture credit risk on new venture exit. Using data from the Kauffman firm survey, for ventures in high-tech industries, relative to ventures in low-tech industries, the decline in performance is stronger for founders who founded a greater number of businesses prior to the current venture or for those who have startup experience in the current industry. The differences in survival between high-tech and low-tech ventures is negligible when founders have more start up experience in the same industry. Furthermore, ventures in high-tech sectors with high credit risk have a greater performance decline relative to those in low-tech industries with high credit risk, and ventures in low-tech sectors with higher perceived competitive advantage have higher odds of failure. The findings add to our understanding of the influence of technology regimes on the limited efficacy of entrepreneurial human capital and stronger effects of credit risk on venture survival and performance.

This paper studies an original analytical framework to address the implementation dynamics of open innovation practices by discussing their impacts on SMEs' social capital and knowledge integration. A total of 358 High-Tech SMEs in the Democratic Republic of Congo participated in the survey. The collected data were statistically analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) in Smart PLS to verify the postulated hypothesis. The results reveal that open innovation practices promote knowledge integration, and social capital partially mediates open innovation and knowledge integration capability. The results further indicate that network competence moderates the practice of open innovation and social capital interactions with external knowledge sources. The theoretical implications of this study contribute to advance the discussion on the antecedent of social capital and knowledge integration in SMEs in developing countries and propose network competence as a moderator. The study also highlights the social capital nature of open innovation and reinforces the knowledge of scholars.
