In the present study, the effect of an La alloying element with different quantities (1, 3 and 5 wt.-%) on the microstructure, mechanical and dry sliding wear properties of Mg- 3Al-3Sn-3Sb alloy was investigated. The wear tests were done on the alloys using pin on-disk equipment against a 4140 steel disc as counterpart under three different sliding velocities of 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 ms-1 and four different loads of 5, 10, 20 and 40 N. The microstructural results showed that the new intermetallic phases (La5Sn3 and LaSnSb2) were formed with addition of La to the main alloy. Also, it was observed that the hardness of the Mg-3Al-3Sn-3Sb alloy was raised with increasing La addition. Furthermore, the tensile properties of the Mg-3Al-3Sn-3Sb alloy improved with rising La content at room and elevated temperature. The wear rates of the alloys increase with increasing of the sliding speed and load. In addition to this, the wear rate of the Mg-3Al-3Sn-3Sb alloy was found to be higher than that of the La content alloys for all test conditions.

Thermal conductivity (k) of iron is measured up to about 134 ​GPa. The measurements are carried out using the single sided laser heated diamond anvil cell, where the power absorbed by a Fe metal foil at hotspot is calculated using a novel thermodynamical method. Thermal conductivity of fcc (γ) ​− ​Fe increases up to a pressure of about 46 ​GPa. We find thermal conductivity values in the range of 70–80 Wm−1K−1 (with an uncertainty of 40%), almost constant with pressure, in the hcp (e) phase of Fe. We attribute the pressure independent k above 46 ​GPa to the strong electronic correlation effects driven by the electronic topological transition (ETT). We predict a value of thermal conductivity of e -Fe of about 40 ​± ​16 Wm−1K−1 ​at the outer core of Earth.

The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure, phase composition, mechanical properties, and microhardness of the shape-memory Сu–14 wt % Al–3 wt % Ni alloy prepared in the nanocrystalline state, which results from the severe plastic high-pressure torsion (HPT), is studied. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis are used in combination with electrical resistivity measurements in order to obtain data on the peculiarities of thermoelastic martensitic transformations and decomposition in the HPT-processed alloy subjected to thermal actions. © 2021, The Author(s). We have investigated the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$ of rare-earth cobaltites RCoO$_3$ (R= La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) in the temperature range $4.2-300$ K and also the influence of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar on their susceptibility at fixed temperatures $T=78 $ and 300 K. The specific dependence $\chi(T)$ observed in LaCoO$_3$ and the anomalously large pressure effect (d ln $\chi$/d$P\sim -100$ Mbar$^{-1}$ for $T = 78$ K) are analyzed in the framework of a two-level model with energy levels difference $\Delta$. The ground state of the system is assumed to be nonmagnetic with the zero spin of Co$^{3+}$ ions, and magnetism at a finite temperature is determined by the excited magnetic spin state. The results of the analysis, supplemented by theoretical calculations of the electronic structure of LaCoO$_3$, indicate a significant increase in $\Delta$ with a decrease in the unit cell volume under the hydrostatic pressure. In the series of RCoO$_3$ (R= Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) compounds, the volume of crystal cell decreases monotonically due to a decrease in the radius of R$^{3+}$ ions. This leads to an increase in the relative energy $\Delta$ of the excited state (the chemical pressure effect), which manifests itself in a decrease in the contribution of cobalt ions to the magnetic susceptibility at a fixed temperature, and also in a decrease in the hydrostatic pressure effect on the susceptibility of RCoO$_3$ compounds, which we have observed at $T=300$ K.

Titanium-based alloys are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE), a phenomenon that deteriorates fatigue properties. Ti-6Al-4V is the most widely used titanium alloy and the effect of hydrogen embrittlement on fatigue crack growth (FCG) was investigated by carrying out crack propagation tests in air and high-pressure H2 environment. The FCG test in hydrogen environment resulted in a drastic increase in crack growth rate at a certain &Delta, K, with crack propagation rates up to 13 times higher than those observed in air. Possible reasons for such behavior were discussed in this paper. The relationship between FCG results in high-pressure H2 environment and microstructure was investigated by comparison with already published results of cast and forged Ti-6Al-4V. Coarser microstructure was found to be more sensitive to HE. Moreover, the electron beam melting (EBM) materials experienced a crack growth acceleration in-between that of cast and wrought Ti-6Al-4V.

Effect of high-pressure (HPH) homogenisation on milk concentrates were studied. Skim and whole milk concentrates were homogenised at 0–150 and 0–40 MPa, respectively, and viscosity, particle size measurement, microbiological and colour characteristics determined. Up to a pressure of 120 MPa, viscosity of HPH-treated skim milk concentrates (SMC) was proportional to HPH pressure and was lower than that of the control (0 MPa). With whole milk concentrates (WMC), HPH decreased viscosity up to a pressure of 20 MPa; above 30 MPa viscosity increased. According to a power law model, both skim and whole milk concentrates showed shear-thinning flow behaviour. HPH at pressures above 120 MPa completely inactivated the microbial load of SMC. Up to a pressure of 50 MPa, HPH decreased the mean particle size (D [3,2]) of SMC; an increasing trend of D [3,2] was observed above 70 MPa. The aim of this study was to determine effects of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) treatment to milk concentrates on powder flow properties of skim milk powders (SMP). For this purpose, SMP samples were produced from skim milk concentrates which were HPH treated at 0 (control), 50, 100 and 150 MPa. SMP samples were stored 180 days at 20 and 40 °C and caking, cohesion and powder flow speed dependency test (PFSD) were performed using a Powder Flow Analyzer. HPH treatment decreased cohesion and caking properties of SMPs. At the 0. day, cake strength of SMPs from HPH treated concentrates varied from 0.43-2.70 mN.m, whereas cake strength of SMP-0 (control) was 8.20 mN.m. Cohesion index (CI) of samples ranged from 6.80-15.74 mm during storage. Based on CI, SMPs from HPH treated concentrates showed free and easy flowing flow behavior during storage at 20 and 40 °C. In addition, cohesion index at four speeds indicated that SMP from HPH treated concentrates were more flowable at even lower flow speeds then SMP-0. PFSD test verified that all SMP samples showed more free-flowing characteristics with increasing flow speeds. Flow stability of samples ranged from 0.95-1.15 and also flow stability of SMP-0 increased during storage at both 20 and 40 °C. The results revealed that HPH treatment to milk concentrates could improve powder flow properties of skim milk powders. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

The electronic structure and dielectric properties of the diamond, body centered cubic diamond (bc8), and hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite) phases of carbon are computed using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory with the emphasis on the excitonic picture of the solid phases relevant in the regimes of high-pressure physics and warm dense matter. We also discuss the capabilities of reproducing the inelastic x-ray scattering spectra in comparison with the existing models in light of recent x-ray scattering experiments on carbon and carbon bearing materials in the Megabar range., 25 pages, 25 figures

Double-lift absorption cycles represent a suitable solution for air-cooled thermally driven cooling applications. Among the several existing double-lift configurations, semi-GAX cycles are known as the most promising in terms of efficiency. These cycles incorporate the GAX effect in a pressure staged cycle, by means of a split on the solution leaving the low pressure absorber. Two configurations of the semi-GAX cycle have been proposed in the past, the semi-GAX 1 and the semi-GAX 2. The former achieves the GAX effect between the intermediate and the high pressure levels, the latter between the low and the intermediate. Within this paper, the semi-GAX cycles are numerically investigated at operating conditions suitable for a low temperature driven (e.g., by flat plate solar collectors) air conditioning application. The peculiarities of the two cycles are described and the factors affecting their performances are underlined. The COP resulted to be strongly influenced by the split ratio, which determines the intermediate pressure and the possibility to achieve the GAX effect. If the split ratio is optimized to achieve the maximum COP, the COP is higher for semi-GAX 2 for air temperatures below 27 °C and for semi-GAX 1 above. In both cases, the maximum air temperature which allows a circulation ratio below 15 is 40 °C, with chilled water at 7/12 °C and driving temperature of 90 °C.

Deterioration of axial compressors is in general a major concern in aircraft engine maintenance. Among other effects, roughness in high-pressure compressor reduces the pressure rise and thus efficiency, thereby increasing the specific fuel consumption of an engine. Therefore, it is important to improve the understanding of roughness on compressor blading and their impact on compressor performance. To investigate the surface roughness of rotor blades of a compressors, different stages of an axial high-pressure compressor and a first-stage blisk (BLade–Integrated–dISK) of a regional aircraft engine is measured by a three-dimensional laser scanning microscope. Fundamental types of roughness structures can be identified: impacts in different sizes, depositions as isotropically distributed single elements with steep flanks and anisotropic roughness structures direct approximately normal to the flow direction. To characterise and quantify the roughness structures in more detail, roughness parameters were determined from the measured surfaces. The quantification showed that the roughness height varies through the compressor depending on the stage, position and the blade side. Overall complex roughness structures of different shape, height and size are detected regardless of the type of the blades.

High-pressure torsion (HPT) processing was applied to cast pure magnesium, and the effects of the deformation on the microstructure, hardness, tensile properties and corrosion resistance were evaluated. The microstructures of the processed samples were examined by electron backscatter diffraction, and the mechanical properties were determined by Vickers hardness and tensile testing. The corrosion resistance was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results show that HPT processing effectively refines the grain size of Mg from millimeters in the cast structure to a few micrometers after processing and also creates a basal texture on the surface. It was found that one or five turns of HPT produced no significant difference in the grain size of the processed Mg and the hardness was a maximum after one turn due to recovery in some grains. Measurements showed that the yield strength of the cast Mg increased by about seven times whereas the corrosion resistance was not significantly affected by the HPT processing.

Nanofluids show potential use in applications related to upstream oil and gas industry to improve the performance of several processes such as exploration, drilling and completion, production and enhanced oil recovery operations. However, their applications to water-based drilling mud (WBM) needs attention to address efficient drilling in an High Pressure and High Temperature (HPHT) environment. In the present work, nanofluid-enhanced WBM (NWBM) are prepared using the nanofluids of CuO and ZnO (size [U+02C2]50. nm) in a xanthan gum aqueous solution as a base fluid, and used as an additive in WBM. The nanofluids are prepared for nanoparticle concentrations of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5. wt% in base. The prepared nanofluids are added as an additive of 1% (by volume) to WBM. The enhancement in thermal and electrical properties of NWBH is studied. It is observed that NWBM show improved thermal and electrical properties by about 35% compared to WBM. An increased concentration of nanoparticles further enhances electrical and thermal properties of drilling fluids. The NWBM based on CuO nanofluid are observed to show improved thermal properties, and are more resistant to HPHT condition than ZnO-based NWBM. High pressure rheological studies are conducted on NWBM to understand the effect of nanofluids on the rheological properties at varying temperatures (25, 70, 90 and 110. �C) and pressures (0.1. MPa and 10. MPa). The effect of pressure on the rheology of NWBM is more significant at higher temperatures, and indicates better rheological stability in case of NWBM. The most significant role that the nanofluids play is in stabilizing the viscosity at higher temperatures. The experimental data on flow curves obtained for various NWBM are fitted to the classical drilling fluid rheological models (Power Law model, Bingham Plastic model and Herschel-Bulkley model). The Herschel Bulkley model is observed to be the best fit-model for rheological behavior of NWBM and can be applied for efficient NWBM design. � 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Hazelnut milk samples were produced from cold pressed hazelnut cake and homogenized up to 150 MPa pressure. Microstructural and rheological properties of products, except temperature sweep, were greatly affected by HPH treatments. Homogenized samples showed significant reduction in particle size, which turned from bimodal and poly-disperse to monodisperse distributions. HPH decreased the consistency of products from 91.82 to 0.51 Pa.s(n) and increased flow behavior index from 0.15 to 0.36. All samples showed higher values G' than G '', which indicates that samples could be classified as soft-gel network, and hazelnut milk samples did not obey the Cox-Merz rule without multiplying angular frequency with shift factor. In conclusion, HPH can be used to reduce the consistency of samples and the friction loss, thus minimizing the amount of energy required to flow during processing and distribution. Industrial relevance. Vegetable based beverages are available at any supermarket as an alternative to dairy products with an increasing consumer acceptance. Between these beverages hazelnut milk samples are the most noteworthy products due to important role in human nutrition and health, and moreover due to well accepted and widely consumed product. Due to its composition, hazelnut milks have very high consistency, and therefore, the energy consumption for processing and handling is too high. In this research, the high pressure homogenization (HPH) technology was successfully proposed to be used for improving microstructural properties, and hence reducing its consistency. The energy consumption during processing and distribution can be minimized by reducing the consistency and friction losses of product.

One of the parameters affecting the COP of the absorption system can be considered as the thermal balance between the high pressure condenser (HPC) and the low pressure generator (LPG) since heat rejected from the HPC is utilized as an energy source by the LPG. Condensation of the water vapor in the HPC depends on the heat removal via the LPG. This circumstance is significant for making an appropriate design and a controllable system with high performance in practical applications. For this reason, a thermodynamic analysis for the HPC of a double effect series flow water/lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system was emphasized in this study. A simulation was developed to investigate the energy transfer between the HPC and LPG. The results show that the proper designation of the HPC temperature improves the COP and ECOP due its significant impact, and its value necessarily has to be higher than the outlet temperature of the LPG based on the operating scheme. Furthermore, the COP and ECOP of the absorption system can be raised in the range of 9.72–35.09% in case of 2 °C-temperature increment in the HPC under the described conditions to be applied.

The mechanical properties and microstructure of commercial Al-15Si-2.5Cu-0.5Mg (Alumix-231 ®) alloy was subjected to extrusion (EXTR), hot extrusion into rods at 565°C at an extrusion ratio of 4:1 and high-pressure torsion (HPT) processing, one of the most severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques, with an anvil rotation speed of 0.5rpm under a quasi-hydrostatic pressure of 5GPa. Afterwards, the microstructures of specimens were systematically investigated using XRD, SEM, EBSD, and TEM. Also, tensile properties of Alumix-231 processed by EXTR and HPT were determined at room temperature. The HPT specimen shows refined microstructure (around average 165nm) having more spherical and homogeneously distributed eutectic silicon second phases in Al metal matrix as compared to EXTR specimen. The hardness values are greater on the surface of the HPT specimen (239.1Hv) as compared to that EXTR specimen (71.2Hv) and increase with distance from the center of HPT specimen (198.3Hv). Tensile strength and ductility of HPT specimen increased approximately 2 times than that of EXTR sample, respectively. The results indicate that the morphological changes in eutectic silicon especially after HPT play a critical role in enhancing or limiting the overall properties of the Alumix-231 material. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Experimental density measurements are reported along with the derived thermodynamic properties (isothermal compressibility, isobaric expansivity, and thermal pressure coefficient) for trihexyltetradecylphosphonium-based ionic liquids-chloride, bromide, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, dicyanamide and methyl sulfonate-in the pressure range (0.10 to 45.00 MPa) and temperature range (283.15 to 333.15) K. The effect of the anion of the ionic liquid on the properties under study was evaluated. Experimental densities were correlated using the Tait equation, the modified cell model equation of state, and the Sanchez-Lacombe equation of state, and compared against the predictive method proposed by Gardas and Coutinho. It is shown that the three correlations describe well all the ILs studied, with the Tait equation providing the lowest average relative deviation (less than 0.004 %) and the Sanchez-Lacombe equation of state the highest (inferior to 0.5 %), and that the predicted densities estimated by Gardas and Coutinho method are in good agreement with the experimental densities determined. � 2011 American Chemical Society.

The subject of the investigation of the possible synergy sterilizing effect included the joint action by the nanosecond electron beam (NEB) and plasma radiation of nanosecond gas discharge of high pressure. Plasma radiation was carried out by the GVI-150 generator which loading involved a discharge camera. Pulse repetition rate of the generator operation was 37 pps, and distance from electrodes cutoff to processed samples ∼5 cm. The experiments on irradiation by the NEB were made on the pulse repetitive nanosecond accelerator URT-0.5 (electrons energy up to 500 keV, a pulse duration 50 ns, pulse repetition rate up to 200 pps). The time the vessel has been irradiated changed from 0 to 5 minutes; the absorbed dose (AD) of different batches changed from 0 to 5 kGy. The extensive data array on joint action of the NEB and plasma radiation for several types of widespread microorganism is received. Also, the synergetic effect of the NEB influence and plasma radiation on microorganisms such as Klebsiella is found. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. Absorption refrigeration systems are environmental friendly since they can utilize industrial waste heat and/or solar energy. In terms of heat source of the systems, researchers prefer one type heat source usually such as hot water or steam. Some studies can be free from environment. In this study, energy and exergy analysis is performed on a double effect series flow absorption refrigeration system with water/lithium bromide as working fluid pair. The refrigeration system runs on various heat sources such as hot water, hot air and steam via High Pressure Generator (HPG) because of hot water/steam and hot air are the most common available heat source for absorption applications but the first law of thermodynamics may not be sufficient analyze the absorption refrigeration system and to show the difference of utilize for different type heat source. On the other hand operation temperatures of the overall system and its components have a major effect on their performance and functionality. In this regard, a parametric study conducted here to investigate this effect on heat capacity and exergy destruction of the HPG, coefficient of performance (COP) of the system, and mass flow rate of heat sources. Also, a comparative analysis is carried out on several heat sources (e.g. hot water, hot air and steam) in terms of exergy destruction and mass flow rate of heat source. From the analyses it is observed that exergy destruction of the HPG increases at higher temperature of the heat sources, condenser and absorber, and lower temperature of the HPG, LPG and evaporator. This destruction is maximized when hot air heat source is used and minimized with utilizing hot water heat source.

This paper concerns with the effect of nitrogen addition to 904 L stainless steel (SS) welds on their stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior in high temperature (288 °C) and high pressure (1050 psi) water of high oxygen content (100 ppb) and high conductivity (2.5 μS/cm). For this study, 316 L SS base plate TIG welded with 904 L SS filler wire and with nitrogen contents of 0.027, 0.058 and 0.095 wt.% were used. Flat pin-loaded tensile specimens were fabricated from transverse welds, with the weld in the gauge length. Slow strain rate tests (SSRT) were carried out at a strain rate of 2.2 × 10−6 s−1. The study shows that the samples, when tested in air, failed at the weld fusion zone for 0.027 and 0.058 wt.% N and at the base metal for 0.095 wt.% N. In the environment, the samples failed in the base metal except the one with least nitrogen content (0.027 wt.%). With nitrogen addition, as the failure location shifted to the base alloy, the weld seemed to acquire SCC resistance and became even more resistant than the base alloy., © Elsevier

The principle of metal hydride based thermal sorption compressor is adapted for water pumping application. Desorption of hydrogen at high pressure and its absorption at low pressure by a metal hydride are used to expand and contract a bellow which pumps an equivalent amount of water. A part of the pumped water is used to cool the bed to facilitate the absorption process, simultaneously yielding warm water. A parametric study is carried out for mischmetal alloy (MmNi4Al) at various pump heads, warm water temperatures, dead volumes of bellow and heat loss through bellow. It is observed that hydride based water pumping is suitable for 'low discharge and high head' conditions, particularly due to its capability to heat a portion of pumped water. ? 2002 International Association for Hydrogen Energy. The influence of cyclic loading on the strength and deformation behavior of cemented marine clay has been studied. This marine clay is of recent Pleistocene origin and deposited in a shallow water marine environment. Open pits were dug in sheeted enclosures and from these pits, undisturbed samples were taken for strength testing. A series of standard triaxial shear tests and stress controlled one-way cyclic load tests were conducted at consolidation stress ranges below and above the pre-consolidation pressure. For the stress levels below the preconsolidation pressure, the cyclic loading has brought about the collapse of the cementation bond through an increase in strains, and at higher pressure ranges, the soil behaves like typical soft clay. This experiment studied the rate of development of strain and pore water pressure and shows that rate is a function of number of cycles, applied stress, and stress history. In addition, soil degradation during cyclic loading is studied in terms of Degradation Index. Attempt has been made to predict stain, pore water pressure, and degradation index through an empirical model.

This is the abstract. The results of measurements of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of a-SiO2-host material after pulsed implantation with [Mn+] and [Co+, Mn+]-ions as well as DFT-calculations are presented. The low-energy shift is found in XPS Si 2p and O 1s core-levels of single [Mn+] and dual [Co+, Mn+] pulsed ion-implanted a-SiO2 (E = 30 keV, D = 2*10^17 cm^-2) with respect to those of untreated a-SiO2.The similar changes are found in XPS Si 2p and O 1s of stishovite compared to those of quartz. This means that the pulsed ion-implantation induces the local high pressure effect which leads to an appearance of SiO6-structural units in alpha-SiO2 host, forming "stishovite-like" local atomic structure. This process can be described within electronic bonding transition from the four-fold "quartz-like" to six-fold "stishovite-like" high-pressure phase in SiO2 host-matrix. It is found that such octahedral conversion depends on the fluence and starts with doses higher than D = 3*10^16 cm^-2., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted in phys. stat. solidi (b)

The influences of reactor pressure on the stoichiometry, free carrier concentration, IR and Hall determined mobility, effective optical band edge, and optical phonon modes of HPCVD grown InN films have been analysed and are reported. The In 3d, and N 1s XPS spectra results revealed In-N and N-In bonding states as well as small concentrations of In-O and N-O bonds, respectively in all samples. InN layers grown at 1 bar were found to contain metallic indium, suggesting that the incorporation of nitrogen into the InN crystal structure was not efficient. The free carrier concentrations, as determined by Hall measurements, were found to decrease with increasing reactor pressure from 1.61×1021 to 8.87×1019 cm-3 and the room-temperature Hall mobility increased with reactor pressure from 21.01 to 155.18 cm2/Vs at 1 and 15 bar reactor pressures, respectively. IR reflectance spectra of all three (1, 8, and 15 bar) InN samples were modelled assuming two distinct layers of InN, having different free carrier concentration, IR mobility, and effective dielectric function values, related to a nucleation/interfacial region at the InN/sapphire, followed by a bulk InN layer. The effective optical band gap has been found to decrease from 1.19 to 0.95 eV with increasing reactor pressure. Oil in water (o/w) Pickering emulsion stabilized by a nanoparticle-surfactant-polymer system shows better thermal stability than the one stabilized by a surfactant-polymer system. The knowledge of the viscoelastic properties of these emulsion systems is important for their successful application for high pressure and high temperature conditions related to enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In this work, the viscoelastic behavior (G? and G?) of the Pickering emulsion stabilized by a nanoparticle-surfactant-polymer system has been investigated as a function of pressure (0.1-30 MPa) and temperature (298-371 K) and compared with conventional emulsion stabilized by a surfactant-polymer system. An oilfield polymer polyacrylamide (PAM) along with nanoparticles (SiO2 and clay) and conventional surfactants are used for the formulation of Pickering o/w emulsion systems. Both the emulsion systems showed liquid-like behavior at 0.1 MPa with G? dominance over the complete range of strain amplitude. It is observed that Pickering emulsions are found to be more stable at high pressure conditions as the pressure effect did not show any significant influence on the viscoelastic properties. Pickering emulsions behave like viscoelastic fluid at all pressure conditions as compared to the surfactant-polymer stabilized emulsion, wherein the storage modulus has shown rapid increase with increase in pressure from 0.1 to 30 MPa. In addition, Pickering emulsions showed better flowability by showing stable G? values for varying conditions of temperature as compared to the surfactant-polymer stabilized emulsion.
