This book constitutes the proceedings of the 9th Latin American Conference on High Performance Computing, CARLA 2022, held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in September 2022. The 16 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 56 submissions.CARLA, the Latin American High Performance Computing Conference, is an international academic meeting aimed at providing a forum to foster the growth and strength of the High Performance Computing (HPC) community in Latin America and the Caribbean through the exchange and dissemination of new ideas, techniques, and research in HPC and its application areas.

This book presents the proceedings of the 11th International Parallel Tools Workshop, a forum to discuss the latest advances in parallel tools, held September 11-12, 2017 in Dresden, Germany.High-performance computing plays an increasingly important role for numerical simulation and modeling in academic and industrial research. At the same time, using large-scale parallel systems efficiently is becoming more difficult. A number of tools addressing parallel program development and analysis has emerged from the high-performance computing community over the last decade, and what may have started as a collection of a small helper scripts has now matured into production-grade frameworks. Powerful user interfaces and an extensive body of documentation together create a user-friendly environment for parallel tools.

The realization that the use of components off the shelf (COTS) could reduce costs sparked the evolution of the massive parallel computing systems available today. The main problem with such systems is the development of suitable operating systems, algorithms and application software that can utilise the potential processing power of large numbers of processors. As a result, systems comprising millions of processors are still limited in the applications they can efficiently solve. Two alternative paradigms that may offer a solution to this problem are Quantum Computers (QC) and Brain Inspired Computers (BIC). This book presents papers from the 14th edition of the biennial international conference on High Performance Computing - From Clouds and Big Data to Exascale and Beyond, held in Cetraro, Italy, from 2 - 6 July 2018. It is divided into 4 sections covering data science, quantum computing, high-performance computing, and applications. The papers presented during the workshop covered a wide spectrum of topics on new developments in the rapidly evolving supercomputing field – including QC and BIC – and a selection of contributions presented at the workshop are included in this volume. In addition, two papers presented at a workshop on Brain Inspired Computing in 2017 and an overview of work related to data science executed by a number of universities in the USA, parts of which were presented at the 2018 and previous workshops, are also included. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves high-performance computing.

Convergence has been a key topic of discussion about the future of cyberinfrastructure for science and engineering research. Convergence refers both to the combined use of simulation and data-centric techniques in science and engineering research and the possibilities for a single type of cyberinfrastructure to support both techniques. The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine convened a Workshop on Converging Simulation and Data-Driven Science on May 10, 2018, in Washington, D.C. The workshop featured speakers from universities, national laboratories, technology companies, and federal agencies who addressed the potential benefits and limitations of convergence as they relate to scientific needs, technological capabilities, funding structures, and system design requirements. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Due to the increasing need to solve complex problems, high-performance computing (HPC) is now one of the most fundamental infrastructures for scientific development in all disciplines, and it has progressed massively in recent years as a result. HPC facilitates the processing of big data, but the tremendous research challenges faced in recent years include: the scalability of computing performance for high velocity, high variety and high volume big data; deep learning with massive-scale datasets; big data programming paradigms on multi-core; GPU and hybrid distributed environments; and unstructured data processing with high-performance computing. Numerical simulation and modelling using High Performance Computing has evolved into an established technique in academic and industrial research. At the same time, the High Performance Computing infrastructure is becoming ever more complex. Big Data has been much in the news in recent years, and the advantages conferred by the collection and analysis of large datasets in fields such as marketing, medicine and finance have led to claims that almost any real world problem could be solved if sufficient data were available. This is of course a very simplistic view, and the usefulness of collecting, processing and storing large datasets must always be seen in terms of the communication, processing and storage capabilities of the computing platforms available. This book presents papers from the International Research Workshop, Advanced High Performance Computing Systems, held in Cetraro, Italy, in July 2014. The papers selected for publication here discuss fundamental aspects of the definition of Big Data, as well as considerations from practice where complex datasets are collected, processed and stored. The concepts, problems, methodologies and solutions presented are of much more general applicability than may be suggested by the particular application areas considered. The US, Europe, Japan and China are racing to develop the next generation of supercomputers – exascale machines capable of 10 to the 18th power calculations a second – by 2020. But the barriers are daunting: the challenge is to change the paradigm of high-performance computing. The 2012 biennial high performance workshop, held in Cetraro, Italy in June 2012, focused on the challenges facing the computing research community to reach exascale performance in the next decade. This book presents papers from this workshop, arranged into four major topics: energy, scalability, new architectural concepts and programming of heterogeneous computing systems. Chapter 1 introduces the status of present supercomputers, which are still about two orders of magnitude separated from the exascale mark. Chapter 2 examines energy demands, a major limiting factor of today's fastest supercomputers; the quantum leap in performance required for exascale computing will require a shift in architectures and technology. In Chapter 3, scalable computer paradigms for dense linear algebra on massive heterogeneous systems are presented, and Chapter 4 discusses architectural concepts. Finally, Chapter 5 addresses the programming of heterogeneous systems. This book will be of interest to all those wishing to understand how the development of modern supercomputers is set to advance in the next decade.

Current advances in High Performance Computing (HPC) increasingly impact efficient software development workflows. Programmers for HPC applications need to consider trends such as increased core counts, multiple levels of parallelism, reduced memory per core, and I/O system challenges in order to derive well performing and highly scalable codes. This book is a collection of carefully reviewed papers presented during the HP-SEE User Forum, the meeting of the High-Performance Computing Infrastructure for South East Europe's (HP-SEE) Research Communities, held in October 17-19, 2012, in Belgrade, Serbia. HP-SEE aims at supporting and integrating regional HPC infrastructures; implementing solutions for HPC in the region; and making HPC resources available to research communities in SEE, region, which are working in a number of scientific fields with specific needs for massively parallel execution on powerful computing resources. HP-SEE brings together research communities and HPC operators from 14 different countries and enables them to share HPC facilities, software, tools, data and research results, thus fostering collaboration and strengthening the regional and national human network; the project specifically supports research groups in the areas of computational physics, computational chemistry and the life sciences. The contributions presented in this book are organized in four main sections: computational physics; computational chemistry; the life sciences; and scientific computing and HPC operations.

The latest advances in the High Performance Computing hardware have significantly raised the level of available compute performance. This book contains mainly a selection of papers that were presented at the International Workshop on High Performance Computing/or Computer Graphics and Visualisation, held in Swansea, United Kingdom on 3-4 July 1995. The workshop was sponsored by the HEFCWI Initiative on ·Parallel Computing - Foundations and Applications·, and it has provided the international computer graphics community with a platform for: • assessing and reviewing the impact of the development of high performance computing on the progress of computer graphics and visualisation; • presenting the current use of high performance computing architecture and software tools in computer graphics and visualisation, and the development of parallel graphics algorithms; • identifying potential high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation, and encouraging members of the graphics community to think about their problems from the perspective of parallelism. The book is divided into six sections. The first section, which acts as the introduction of the book, gives an overview of the current state of the art It contains a comprehensive survey, by Whitman, of parallel algorithms for computer graphics and visualisation; and a discussion, by Hansen, on the past, present and future high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation. The second section is focused on the design and implementation of high performance architecture, software tools and algorithms for surface rendering.

The proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Parallel Tools for High Performance Computing provide an overview on supportive software tools and environments in the fields of System Management, Parallel Debugging and Performance Analysis. In the pursuit to maintain exponential growth for the performance of high performance computers the HPC community is currently targeting Exascale Systems. The initial planning for Exascale already started when the first Petaflop system was delivered. Many challenges need to be addressed to reach the necessary performance. Scalability, energy efficiency and fault-tolerance need to be increased by orders of magnitude. The goal can only be achieved when advanced hardware is combined with a suitable software stack. In fact, the importance of software is rapidly growing. As a result, many international projects focus on the necessary software.

Past and current research in computer performance analysis has focused primarily on dedicated parallel machines. However, future applications in the area of high-performance computing will not only use individual parallel systems but a large set of networked resources. This scenario of computational and data Grids is attracting a great deal of attention from both computer and computational scientists. In addition to the inherent complexity of parallel machines, the sharing and transparency of the available resources introduces new challenges on performance analysis, techniques, and systems. In order to meet those challenges, a multi-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted problems of performance is required. New degrees of freedom will come into play with a direct impact on the performance of Grid computing, including wide-area network performance, quality-of-service (QoS), heterogeneity, and middleware systems, to mention only a few.

Single processing units have now reached a point where further major improvements in their performance are restricted by their physical limitations. This is causing a slowing down in advances at the same time as new scientific challenges are demanding exascale speed. This has meant that parallel processing has become key to High Performance Computing (HPC).This book contains the proceedings of the 14th biennial ParCo conference, ParCo2011, held in Ghent, Belgium. The ParCo conferences have traditionally concentrated on three main themes: Algorithms, Architectures and Applications. Nowadays though, the focus has shifted from traditional multiprocessor topologies to heterogeneous and manycores, incorporating standard CPUs, GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). These platforms are, at a higher abstraction level, integrated in clusters, grids and clouds. The papers presented here reflect this change of focus. This book constitutes the refereeds proceedings of the International Conference on High Performance Architecture and Grid Computing, HPAGC 2011, held in Chandigarh, India, in July 2011. The 87 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 240 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on grid and cloud computing; high performance architecture; information management and network security.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 9th International Conference on High Performance Computing for Computational Science, VECPAR 2010, held in Berkeley, CA, USA, in June 2010. The 34 revised full papers presented together with five invited contributions were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and revision. The papers are organized in topical sections on linear algebra and solvers on emerging architectures, large-scale simulations, parallel and distributed computing, numerical algorithms.

This volume contains 27 contributions to the Forth Russian-German Advanced Research Workshop on Computational Science and High Performance Computing presented in October 2009 in Freiburg, Germany. The workshop was organized jointly by the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), the Institute of Computational Technologies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICT SB RAS) and the Section of Applied Mathematics of the University of Freiburg (IAM Freiburg) The contributions range from computer science, mathematics and high performance computing to applications in mechanical and aerospace engineering. They show a wealth of theoretical work and simulation experience with a potential of bringing together theoretical mathematical modelling and usage of high performance computing systems presenting the state of the art of computational technologies.

This book covers the results of the 11th and 12th Tera?op Workshop and continued a series initiated by NEC and the HLRS in 2004. As part of the Tera?op Workbench, it has become a meeting platform for scientists, application developers, international experts and hardware designers to discuss the current state and future directions of supercomputing with the aim of achieving the highest sustained application perf- mance. The Tera?op Workbench Project is a collaboration between the High Perf- mance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and NEC Deutschland GmbH (NEC HPCE) to support users to achieve their research goals using High Performance Computing. The?rst stage of the Tera?op Workbench project (2004–2008) c- centrated on user's applications and their optimization for the 72-node NEC SX-8 installation at HLRS. During this stage, numerous individual codes, developed and maintained by researchers or commercial organizations, have been analyzed and - timized. Several of the codes have shown the ability to outreach the TFlop/s thre- old of sustained performance. This created the possibility for new science and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics.

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and the Bavarian Competence Network for Technical and Scienti?c High Performance Computing (KONWIHR) publish in the present book results of numerical simulations facilitated by the High P- formance Computer System in Bavaria (HLRB II) within the last two years. The papers were presented at the Fourth Joint HLRB and KONWIHR Review and - sult Workshop in Garching on 8th and 9th December 2009, and were selected from all progress reports of projects that use the HLRB II. Similar to the workshop two years ago, the majority of the contributed papers belong to the area of computational?uid dynamics (CFD), condensed matter physics, astrophysics, chemistry, computer sciences and high-energy physics. We note a considerable increase of the user c- munity in some areas: Compared to 2007, the number of papers increased from 6 to 12 in condensed matter physics and from 2 to 5 in high-energy physics. Bio s- ences contributed only one paper in 2007, but four papers in 2009. This indicates that the area of application of supercomputers is continuously growing and entering new?elds of research. The year 2007 saw two major events of particular importance for the LRZ. First, after a substantial upgrade with dual-core processors the SGI Altix 4700 superc- puter reached a peak performance of more than 62 Tera?op/s. And second, the n- pro?t organization Gauss Centre for Supercomputing e. V. (GCS) was founded on April 13th.

At the end of the year 2008, we have seen a strategic step towards a funct- ning HPC infrastructure on Tier-0 level in Germany. Based on an agreement (Verwaltungsabkommen') between the Federal Ministry of Education and'Research (BMBF) and the state ministries for research of Baden-Wurttem- · berg, Bayern, and Nordrhein-Westfalen, a budget of overall 400 Million Euro had been allocated - equally shared between federal and state authorities in a?ve year time frame - to establish the next generation of HPC systems at the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) - consisting of the three nat- nal supercomputing centres HLRS (Stuttgart), NIC/JSC (Julich), and LRZ · (Munich). As part of that strategic initiative, in May 2009 already NIC/JSC has installed the?rst phase of the GCS HPC Tier-0 resources, an IBM Blue Gene/P with roughly 300. 000 Cores, this time in Julic · h, With that, the GCS provides the most powerfulhigh-performance computing infrastructure in - rope already today. HLRS and its partners in the GCS have agreed on a common strategy for the installation of the next generation of leading edge HPC systems. Over the next few years, HLRS and LRZ as the other two GCS centers will upgrade their systems accordingly. The plan is to have a Tier-0 HPC system within GCS operating at any time in this?ve year period. The Tera op Workbench project is a collaboration between the High Performance C- puting Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and NEC Deutschland GmbH (NEC-HPCE) to s- port users in achieving their research goals using High Performance Computing. The rst stage of the Tera op Workbench project (2004–2008) concentrated on user's applications and their optimization for the former ag ship of HLRS, a - node NEC SX-8 installation. During this stage, numerous individual codes, dev- oped and maintained by researchers or commercial organizations, have been a- lyzed and optimized. Within the project, several of the codes have shown the ability to outreach the TFlop/s threshold of sustained performance. This created the pos- bility for new science and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics. The second stage of the Tera op Workbench project (2008–2012) focuses on c- rent and future trends of hardware and software developments. We observe a strong tendency to heterogeneous environments on the hardware level, while at the same time, applications become increasingly heterogeneous by including multi-physics or multi-scale effects. The goal of the current studies of the Tera op Workbench is to gain insight in the developments of both components. The overall target is to help scientists to run their application in the most ef cient and most convenient way on the hardware best suited for their purposes.

As more and more hardware platforms support parallelism, parallel programming is gaining momentum. Applications can only leverage the performance of multi-core processors or graphics processing units if they are able to split a problem into smaller ones that can be solved in parallel. The challenges emerging from the development of parallel applications have led to the development of a great number of tools for debugging, performance analysis and other tasks. The proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Parallel Tools for High Performance Computing provide a technical overview in order to help engineers, developers and computer scientists decide which tools are best suited to enhancing their current development processes.

For the fourth time, the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and the Com- tence Network for Technical, Scienti c High Performance Computing in Bavaria (KONWIHR) publishes the results from scienti c projects conducted on the c- puter systems HLRB I and II (High Performance Computer in Bavaria). This book reports the research carried out on the HLRB systems within the last three years and compiles the proceedings of the Third Joint HLRB and KONWIHR Result and Reviewing Workshop (3rd and 4th December 2007) in Garching. In 2000, HLRB I was the rst system in Europe that was capable of performing more than one Tera op/s or one billion oating point operations per second. In 2006 it was replaced by HLRB II. After a substantial upgrade it now achieves a peak performance of more than 62 Tera op/s. To install and operate this powerful system, LRZ had to move to its new facilities in Garching. However, the situation regarding the need for more computation cycles has not changed much since 2000. The demand for higher performance is still present, a trend that is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Other resources like memory and disk space are currently in suf cient abundance on this new system.
