Abstract

Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) have demonstrated significant achievements in various image and video generation tasks, including the domain of medical imaging. However, generating echocardiography videos based on semantic anatomical information remains an unexplored area of research. This is mostly due to the constraints imposed by the currently available datasets, which lack sufficient scale and comprehensive frame-wise annotations for every cardiac cycle. This paper aims to tackle the aforementioned challenges by expanding upon existing video diffusion models for the purpose of cardiac video synthesis. More specifically, our focus lies in generating video using semantic maps of the initial frame during the cardiac cycle, commonly referred to as end diastole. To further improve the synthesis process, we integrate spatial adaptive normalization into multiscale feature maps. This enables the inclusion of semantic guidance during synthesis, resulting in enhanced realism and coherence of the resultant video sequences. Experiments are conducted on the CAMUS dataset, which is a highly used dataset in the field of echocardiography. Our model exhibits better performance compared to the standard diffusion technique in terms of multiple metrics, including FID, FVD, and SSMI.

6. Echocardiography Segmentation Using Neural ODE-based Diffeomorphic Registration Field

Abstract

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently proven their excellent ability to segment 2D cardiac ultrasound images. However, the majority of attempts to perform full-sequence segmentation of cardiac ultrasound videos either rely on models trained only on keyframe images or fail to maintain the topology over time. To address these issues, in this work, we consider segmentation of ultrasound video as a registration estimation problem and present a novel method for diffeomorphic image registration using neural ordinary differential equations (Neural ODE). In particular, we consider the registration field vector field between frames as a continuous trajectory ODE. The estimated registration field is then applied to the segmentation mask of the first frame to obtain a segment for the whole cardiac cycle. The proposed method, Echo-ODE, introduces several key improvements compared to the previous state-of-the-art. Firstly, by solving a continuous ODE, the proposed method achieves smoother segmentation, preserving the topology of segmentation maps over the whole sequence (Hausdorff distance: 3.7-4.4). Secondly, it maintains temporal consistency between frames without explicitly optimizing for temporal consistency attributes, achieving temporal consistency in 91% of the videos in the dataset. Lastly, the proposed method is able to maintain the clinical accuracy of the segmentation maps (MAE of the LVEF: 2.7-3.1). The results show that our method surpasses the previous state-of-the-art in multiple aspects, demonstrating the importance of spatial-temporal data processing for the implementation of Neural ODEs in medical imaging applications. 17. Early outcomes of total hip arthroplasty using point-of-care manufactured patient-specific instruments: a single university hospital’s initial experience

Abstract

Abstract Background The use of 3D-printed Patient-Specific Instruments (PSI) has been investigated to enhance the postoperative functional results in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and has been recognized as an innovative approach for the optimal alignment of hip implant components. Point-of-care production is gradually becoming the norm for PSI manufacturing. The purpose of this article is to assess the accuracy and safety of PSI for total hip arthroplasty performed at the point-of-care in Vietnam. Methods 34 THA cases were assessed in this prospective study. A template for the size and orientation of the implant and the design of the PSI was generated using data from preoperative 3D computed tomography (CT) scanning of the lower limb. The principal surgeon determined the implants’ position and PSI design directly using the software. The PSI is then produced using a 3D-compatible resin printer in our manufacturing hospital. The PSI, consisting of an acetabulum and a femoral component placed press-fit on the bony surface, guided surgeons to precisely ream the acetabulum and cut the femoral neck according to the pre-planned plane. Postoperative CT scanning was obtained and superimposed onto the 3D model of the implant to evaluate the accuracy of the procedure by comparing the orientation values of the cup and the alignment of the stem between the planned and the actual results. Intra- and postoperative clinical parameters of surgery, including surgical time, intra-operative blood loss, complications, and the first ambulation, were also recorded to evaluate the safety of the surgery. Results The preparation for PSI required an average of 3 days. 94% of cup size and 91% of stem size were correctly selected. The mean values of postoperative inclination and anteversion were 44.2° ± 4.1° and 19.2° ± 5.6°, respectively. 64.7% of cases deviated from planned within the ± 50 range and 94.1% within the ± 10° range. There was no significant statistical difference between the planned and the achieved values of stem anteversion, osteotomy height, and leg length discrepancy (p > 0.05). The average surgical time was 82.5° ± 10.8 min, and the intraoperative blood loss was estimated at 317.7° ± 57.6 ml. 64.7% of patients could walk on the day of surgery. There were no complications reported. Conclusions The point-of-care manufactured PSI is a useful solution for improving the accuracy of total hip arthroplasty surgery, especially in restoring implant orientation and reducing leg length discrepancy. However, long-term clinical follow-up evaluation is needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of this approach.

Abstract

Colibacillosis caused by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a very prevalent disease in poultry farms in China. The exploration of effective non-antibiotic substances is of great significance for the control of APEC infections. This experiment evaluated the efficacy of coated essential oil and organic acid (EOA) supplementation to prevent E. coli O78 infection in broiler chickens. A total of 288 one-day-old male broiler chicks were randomly distributed into 4 groups with 6 replicates per group. Chickens were fed a diet either supplemented with EOA (500 mg/kg feed) or not, and either uninfected or infected with E. coli O78 intratracheally. Abstract

BackgroundEarly detection and localization of myocardial infarction (MI) can reduce the severity of cardiac damage through timely treatment interventions. In recent years, deep learning techniques have shown promise for detecting MI in echocardiographic images. Existing attempts typically formulate this task as classification and rely on a single segmentation model to estimate myocardial segment displacements. However, there has been no examination of how segmentation accuracy affects MI classification performance or the potential benefits of using ensemble learning approaches. Our study investigates this relationship and introduces a robust method that combines features from multiple segmentation models to improve MI classification performance by leveraging ensemble learning.Materials and MethodsOur method combines myocardial segment displacement features from multiple segmentation models, which are then input into a typical classifier to estimate the risk of MI. We validated the proposed approach on two datasets: the public HMC-QU dataset (109 echocardiograms) for training and validation, and an E-Hospital dataset (60 echocardiograms) from a local clinical site in Vietnam for independent testing. Model performance was evaluated based on accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity.ResultsThe proposed approach demonstrated excellent performance in detecting MI. It achieved an F1 score of 0.942, corresponding to an accuracy of 91.4%, a sensitivity of 94.1%, and a specificity of 88.3%. The results showed that the proposed approach outperformed the state-of-the-art feature-based method, which had a precision of 85.2%, a specificity of 70.1%, a sensitivity of 85.9%, an accuracy of 85.5%, and an accuracy of 80.2% on the HMC-QU dataset. On the external validation set, the proposed model still performed well, with an F1 score of 0.8, an accuracy of 76.7%, a sensitivity of 77.8%, and a specificity of 75.0%.ConclusionsOur study demonstrated the ability to accurately predict MI in echocardiograms by combining information from several segmentation models. Further research is necessary to determine its potential use in clinical settings as a tool to assist cardiologists and technicians with objective assessments and reduce dependence on operator subjectivity. Abstract

We report on the illustration of the first electron blocking layer (EBL) free AlInN nanowire light-emitting diodes (LEDs) operating in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) wavelength region (sub-250 nm). We have systematically analyzed the results using APSYS software and compared with simulated AlGaN nanowire DUV LEDs. From the simulation results, significant efficiency droop was observed in AlGaN based devices, attributed to the significant electron leakage. However, compared to AlGaN nanowire DUV LEDs at similar emission wavelength, the proposed single quantum well (SQW) AlInN based light-emitters offer higher internal quantum efficiency without droop up to current density of 1500 A/cm2 and high output optical power. Moreover, we find that transverse magnetic polarized emission is ~ 5 orders stronger than transverse electric polarized emission at 238 nm wavelength. Further research shows that the performance of the AlInN DUV nanowire LEDs decreases with multiple QWs in the active region due to the presence of the non-uniform carrier distribution in the active region. This study provides important insights on the design of new type of high performance AlInN nanowire DUV LEDs, by replacing currently used AlGaN semiconductors.

Abstract

We report on the demonstration of the first axial AlInN ultraviolet core-shell nanowire light-emitting diodes with highly stable emission in the UV wavelength range. During the epitaxial growth of AlInN layer, an AlInN shell is spontaneously formed, resulted in the reduced nonradiative recombination on nanowire surface. The AlInN nanowires exhibit high internal quantum efficiency of ~ 52% at room temperature for emission at 295nm. The peak emission wavelength can be varied from 290 nm to 355 nm by changing the growth condition. Moreover, significantly strong transverse magnetic (TM) polarized emission is recorded which is ~ 4 times stronger compared to the transverse electric (TE) polarized light at 295 nm. This study provides alternative approach for the fabrication of new type of high-performance ultraviolet light-emitters.

Abstract

PURPOSE: This study aims to clarify the effect mechanism of subjective norms on entrepreneurial intention. The results of how subjective norms contribute to forming start-up intention are inconsistent and unclear, which is notable in previous research. By integrating the theory of planned behavior and the theory of self-efficacy, we investigate whether entrepreneurial self-efficacy and attitude toward entrepreneurship serially mediate the relationship between subjective norms and intention to start a business. In addition, this study examines the moderate role of entrepreneurial education on the serial indirect effect of subjective norms on entrepreneurial intention via entrepreneurial self-efficacy and attitude toward entrepreneurship. METHODOLOGY: This study utilized a sample of 958 master’s students in Vietnam to investigate a moderated-serial mediation model of subjective norms on entrepreneurial intention. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out to check the reliability and validity of the scales. Then, the SPSS PROCESS macro developed by Hayes was employed to test the research model. Specifically, Model 6 was used to examine the serial indirect effect of subjective norms on start-up intention and Model 84 was implemented to investigate the moderate effect of entrepreneurial education. FINDINGS: The results of this study found that entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial attitude significantly mediate subjective norms’ effect on entrepreneurial intention. Especially, the results reveal that the serial mediation effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and attitude toward entrepreneurship was significant and entrepreneurial self-efficacy and attitude toward entrepreneurship played a fully mediating role in the relationship between subjective norms and start-up intention. In addition, this study found that the serial mediation effect of subjective norms on start-up intention via entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial attitude was negatively moderated by entrepreneurial education. IMPLICATIONS: The results of this study further clarify the relationship between subjective norms and entrepreneurial intention and the role of entrepreneurial education, therefore, contributing to narrowing the notable gap between this relationship. Besides, our study provides several implications for governments and policymakers to promote the intention to start a business. The finding of our study indicates that subjective norms are an important factor in promoting entrepreneurial intention. Therefore, policymakers should take some actions to promote entrepreneurial culture, such as strengthening propaganda activities to promote the image of successful entrepreneurs, praising businesses and entrepreneurs who contribute to society, and giving evidence of their contribution to the development of the country. Promoting an entrepreneurial culture may increase peer group pressure on potential entrepreneurs, thus enhancing the intention to start a business. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: This study expects to contribute to a better understanding of the effect mechanism of subjective norms on entrepreneurial intention and explain the role of entrepreneurial education in this relationship. This study explores the mediating role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial attitude in the relationship between subjective norms and the intention to start a business. Additionally, this study demonstrates that entrepreneurial education weakens the serial mediation model of subjective norms on the intention to start a business.
