Recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has revealed that several supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) show unusually high forbidden-to-resonance ($f/r$) line ratios. While their origin is still uncertain and debated, most of these SNRs have asymmetric morphology and/or show evidence of interaction with dense material, which may hint at the true nature of the anomalous $f/r$ ratios. Here we report on a detailed spectral analysis of an LMC SNR J0453.6$-$6829 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We find that the $f/r$ ratio of O$~$VII ($=1.06^{+0.09}_{-0.10}$) is significantly higher than expected from the previously-reported thermal model. The spectrum is fairly explained by taking into account a charge exchange (CX) emission in addition to the thermal component. Analyzing archival ATCA & Parkes radio data, we also reveal that H$~$I cloud is possibly interacting with J0453.6$-$6829. These results support the presence of CX in J0453.6$-$6829, as the origin of the obtained high $f/r$ ratio. Although a contribution of the resonance scattering (RS) cannot be ruled out at this time, we conclude that CX seems more likely than RS considering the relatively symmetric morphology of this remnant., 10 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

PeVatrons are the most powerful naturally occurring particle accelerators in the Universe. The identification of counterparts associated to astrophysical objects such as dying massive stars, molecular gas, star-forming regions, and star clusters is essential to clarify the underlying nature of the PeV emission, i.e., hadronic or leptonic. We present $^{12,13}$CO(J=2$\rightarrow$1) observations made with the 1.85~m radio-telescope of the Osaka Prefecture University toward the Cygnus OB7 molecular cloud, which contains the PeVatron candidate LHAASO J2108+5157. We investigate the nature of the sub-PeV (gamma-ray) emission by studying the nucleon density determined from the content of HI and H$_2$, derived from the CO observations. In addition to MML[2017]4607, detected via the observations of the optically thick $^{12}$CO(J=1$\rightarrow$0) emission, we infer the presence of an optically thin molecular cloud, named [FKT-MC]2022, whose angular size is 1.1$\pm$0.2$^{\circ}$. We propose this cloud as a new candidate to produce the sub-PeV emission observed in LHAASO J2108+5157. Considering a distance of 1.7 kpc, we estimate a nucleon (HI+H$_2$) density of 37$\pm$14 cm$^{-3}$, and a total nucleon mass(HI+H$_2$) of 1.5$\pm$0.6$\times$10$^4$ M$_{\odot}$. On the other hand, we confirm that Kronberger 82 is a molecular clump with an angular size of 0.1$^{\circ}$, a nucleon density $\sim$ 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$, and a mass $\sim$ 10$^3$ M$_{\odot}$. Although Kronberger 82 hosts the physical conditions to produce the observed emission of LHAASO J2108+5157, [FKT-MC]2022 is located closer to it, suggesting that the latter could be the one associated to the sub-PeV emission. We have carried out a new kinematical analysis of the molecular gas in the Sh2-233 region by using the CO $J$ = 2-1 data taken at $\sim$0.5 pc resolution. The molecular gas consists of a filamentary cloud of 5-pc length with 1.5-pc width where two dense cloud cores are embedded. The filament lies between two clouds, which have a velocity difference of 2.6 km s$^{-1}$ and are extended over $\sim$5 pc. We frame a scenario that the two clouds are colliding with each other and compressed the gas between them to form the filament in $\sim$0.5 Myr which is perpendicular to the collision. It is likely that the collision formed not only the filamentary cloud but also the two dense cores. One of the dense cores is associated with the high-mass protostellar candidate IRAS 05358+3543, a representative high-mass protostar. In the monolithic collapse scheme of high mass star formation, a compact dense core of 100 $M_\odot$ within a volume of 0.1 pc radius is assumed as the initial condition, whereas the formation of such a core remained unexplained in the previous works. We argue that the proposed collision is a step which efficiently collects the gas of 100 $M_\odot$ into 0.1 pc radius. Recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy revealed possible presence of charge exchange (CX) X-ray emission in supernova remnants (SNRs). Although CX is expected to take place at outermost edges of SNR shells, no significant measurement has been reported so far due to the lack of nearby SNR samples. Here we present an X-ray study of SNR G296.1$-$0.5, which has a complicated multiple-shell structure, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. We select two shells in different regions and find that in both regions O VII line shows a high forbidden-to-resonance ($f/r$) ratio that cannot be reproduced by a simple thermal model. Our spectral analysis suggests a presence of CX and the result is also supported by our new radio observation, where we discover evidence of molecular clouds associated with these shells. Assuming G296.1$-$0.5 has a spherical shock, we estimate that CX is dominant in a thin layer with a thickness of 0.2--0.3\% of the shock radius. The result is consistent with a previous theoretical expectation and we therefore conclude that CX occurs in G296.1$-$0.5., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The origin of the radiation observed in the region of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7−3946, one of the brightest TeV emitters, has been debated since its discovery. The existence of atomic and molecular clouds in this object supports the idea that part of the GeV gamma-ray emission in this region originates from proton–proton collisions. However, the observed column density of protons derived from observations of the gas cannot explain the whole emission. Yet there could be a fraction of protons contained in fainter structures that have not been detected so far. Here we search for faint objects in the line of sight of RX J1713.7−3946 using the principle of light extinction and the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission Data Release 2 astrometric and photometric data. We reveal and locate with precision a number of dust clouds and note that only one appears to be in the vicinity of RX J1713.7−3946. We estimate the embedded mass to be Mdust = (7.0 ± 0.6) × 103 M⊙, which might be big enough to contain the missing protons. Finally, using the fact that the supernova remnant is expected to be located in a dusty environment and that there appears to be only one such structure in the vicinity of RX J1713.7−3946, we set a very precise constraint on the supernova remnant distance, at 1.12 ± 0.01 kpc. A dust cloud in the line of sight towards supernova remnant RX J1713.7−3946—identified using Gaia data —contributes to the GeV gamma-ray emission of the region.

HESS J1825-137 is one of the most powerful and luminous TeV gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae (PWN). To the south of HESS J1825-137, Fermi-LAT observation revealed a new region of GeV gamma-ray emission with three apparent peaks (termed here, GeV-ABC). This study presents interstellar medium (ISM) data and spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling towards the GeV emission to understand the underlying particle acceleration. We considered several particle accelerator scenarios - the PWN associated with HESS J1825-137, the progenitor SNR also associated with HESS J1825-137, plus the gamma-ray binary system LS\,5039. It was found that the progenitor SNR of HESS J1825-137 has insufficient energetics to account for all GeV emission. GeV-ABC may be a reflection of an earlier epoch in the history of the PWN associated with HESS\,1825-137, assuming fast diffusion perhaps including advection. LS\,5039 cannot meet the required energetics to be the source of particle acceleration. We report the first evidence for high-mass star formation triggered by collisions of molecular clouds in M33. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we spatially resolved filamentary structures of giant molecular cloud 37 in M33 using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and C$^{18}$O($J$ = 2-1) line emission at a spatial resolution of $\sim$2 pc. There are two individual molecular clouds with a systematic velocity difference of $\sim$6 km s$^{-1}$. Three continuum sources representing up to $\sim$10 high-mass stars with the spectral types of B0V-O7.5V are embedded within the densest parts of molecular clouds bright in the C$^{18}$O($J$ = 2-1) line emission. The two molecular clouds show a complementary spatial distribution with a spatial displacement of $\sim$6.2 pc, and show a V-shaped structure in the position-velocity diagram. These observational features traced by CO and its isotopes are consistent with those in high-mass star-forming regions created by cloud-cloud collisions in the Galactic and Magellanic Cloud HII regions. The formation mechanism of super star clusters (SSCs), a present-day analog of the ancient globulars, still remains elusive. The major merger, the Antennae galaxies is forming SSCs and is one of the primary targets to test the cluster formation mechanism. We reanalyzed the archival ALMA CO data of the Antennae and found three typical observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision toward SSC B1 and other SSCs in the overlap region; i. two velocity components with $\sim$100 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation, ii. the bridge features connecting the two components, and iii. the complementary spatial distribution between them, lending support for collisions of the two components as a cluster formation mechanism. We present a scenario that the two clouds with 100 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation collided, and SSCs having $\sim$10$^6$-10$^7$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ were formed rapidly during the time scale. {We compared the present results with the recent studies of star forming regions in the Milky Way and the LMC, where the SSCs having $\sim$10$^4$-10$^5$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ are located. We have performed new large-scale $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=$1-0 observations toward the Vulpecula OB association ($l \sim 60^\circ$) as part of the Nobeyama 45 m Local Spur CO survey project. Molecular clouds are distributed over $\sim 100$ pc, with local peaks at the Sh 2-86, Sh 2-87, and Sh 2-88 high-mass star-forming regions in the Vulpecula complex. The molecular gas is associated with the Local Spur, which corresponds to the nearest inter-arm region located between the Local Arm and the Sagittarius Arm. We discovered new giant molecular filaments (GMFs) in Sh 2-86, with a length of $\sim 30$ pc, width of $\sim 5$ pc, and molecular mass of $\sim 4\times 10^4\ M_{\odot}$. We also found that Sh 2-86 contains the three velocity components at 22, 27, and 33 km s$^{-1}$. These clouds and GMFs are likely to be physically associated with Sh 2-86 because they have high $^{12}$CO $J =$ 2-1 to $J =$ 1-0 intensity ratios and coincide with the infrared dust emission. The open cluster NGC 6823 exists at the common intersection of these clouds. We present a comprehensive multi-frequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of $\sim$144~deg$^2$ at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to $\sim$3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index ($\alpha$; where $S_{v}\sim\nu^\alpha$) of $\alpha = -0.89 $ and mean of $-0.88 \pm 0.48$ for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution (FWHM $\sim$40-45 arcsec). The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Infrared Faint Radio sources populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are (CSS) candidates with $\alpha 0.5$. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128have a redshift measurement. We carried out new CO($J$ = 2-1) observations toward the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) W49B with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We found that CO clouds at $\sim$10 km s$^{-1}$ show a good spatial correspondence with synchrotron radio continuum as well as an X-ray deformed shell. The bulk mass of molecular clouds accounts for the western part of the shell, not for the eastern shell where near-infrared H$_2$ emission is detected. The molecular clouds at $\sim$10 km s$^{-1}$ show higher kinetic temperature of $\sim$20-60 K, suggesting that modest shock-heating occurred. The expanding motion of the clouds with $\Delta V \sim$6 km s$^{-1}$ was formed by strong winds from the progenitor system. We argue that the barrel-like structure of Fe rich ejecta was possibly formed not only by an asymmetric explosion, but also by interactions with dense molecular clouds. We also found a negative correlation between the CO intensity and the electron temperature of recombining plasma, implying that the origin of the high-temperature recombining plasma in W49B can be understood as the thermal conduction model. The total energy of accelerated cosmic-ray protons $W_\mathrm{p}$ is estimated to be $\sim$$2\times 10^{49}$ erg by adopting an averaged gas density of $\sim$$650\pm200$ cm$^{-3}$. The SNR age-$W_\mathrm{p}$ diagram indicates that W49B shows one of the highest in-situ values of $W_\mathrm{p}$ in the gamma-ray bright SNRs., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, published in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

30 Doradus C is a superbubble which emits the brightest nonthermal X- and TeV gamma-rays in the Local Group. In order to explore detailed connection between the high energy radiation and the interstellar medium, we have carried out new CO and HI observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter$/$Submillimeter Array (ALMA), Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array with resolutions of up to 3 pc. The ALMA data of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) emission revealed 23 molecular clouds with the typical diameters of $\sim$6-12 pc and masses of $\sim$600-10000 $M_{\odot}$. The comparison with the X-rays of $XMM$-$Newton$ at $\sim$3 pc resolution shows that X-rays are enhanced toward these clouds. The CO data were combined with the HI to estimate the total interstellar protons. Comparison of the interstellar proton column density and the X-rays revealed that the X-rays are enhanced with the total proton. These are most likely due to the shock-cloud interaction modeled by the magnetohydrodynamical simulations (Inoue et al. 2012, ApJ, 744, 71). Further, we note a trend that the X-ray photon index varies with distance from the center of the high-mass star cluster, suggesting that the cosmic-ray electrons are accelerated by one or multiple supernovae in the cluster. We review recent progress in elucidating the relationship between high-energy radiation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with ages of $\sim$2000 yr, focusing in particular on RX J1713.7$-$3946 and RCW 86. Both SNRs emit strong nonthermal X-rays and TeV $\gamma$-rays, and they contain clumpy distributions of interstellar gas that includes both atomic and molecular hydrogen. We find that shock-cloud interactions provide a viable explanation for the spatial correlation between the X-rays and ISM. In these interactions, the supernova shocks hit the typically pc-scale dense cores, generating a highly turbulent velocity field that amplifies the magnetic field up to 0.1-1 mG. This amplification leads to enhanced nonthermal synchrotron emission around the clumps, whereas the cosmic-ray electrons do not penetrate the clumps. Accordingly, the nonthermal X-rays exhibit a spatial distribution similar to that of the ISM on the pc scale, while they are anticorrelated at sub-pc scales. These results predict that hadronic $\gamma$-rays can be emitted from the dense cores, resulting in a spatial correspondence between the $\gamma$-rays and the ISM. The current pc-scale resolution of $\gamma$-ray observations is too low to resolve this correspondence. Future $\gamma$-ray observations with the Cherenkov Telescope Array will be able to resolve the sub-pc-scale $\gamma$-ray distribution and provide clues to the origin of these cosmic $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

W$\, 51\,$A is one of the most active star-forming regions in the Milky Way, and includes copious amounts of molecular gas with a total mass of ${\sim }6\times 10^{5}\, M_{\odot }$. The molecular gas has multiple velocity components over ∼20 km s−1, and interactions between these components have been discussed as the mechanism that triggered the massive star formation in W$\, 51\,$A. In this paper, we report on an observational study of the molecular gas in W$\, 51\,$A using the new 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (J = 1–0) data covering a 1${^{\circ}_{.}}$4 × 1${^{\circ}_{.}}$0 area of W$\, 51\,$A obtained with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope at 20′ resolution. Our CO data resolved four discrete velocity clouds with sizes and masses of ∼30 pc and 1.0–$1.9\times 10^{5}\, M_{\odot }$ around radial velocities of 50, 56, 60, and 68 km s−1. Toward the central part of the Hii region complex G49.5−0.4 in W$\, 51\,$A, in which the bright stellar clusters IRS 1 and IRS 2 are located, we identified four C18O clumps having sizes of ∼1 pc and column densities of higher than 1023 cm−2, which are each embedded within the four velocity clouds. These four clumps are concentrated within a small area of 5 pc, but show a complementary distribution on the sky. In the position–velocity diagram, these clumps are connected with each other by bridge features having weak intensities. The high intensity ratios of 13CO (J = 3–2)$/$(J = 1–0) also indicate that these four clouds are associated with the Hii regions, including IRS 1 and IRS 2. We also reveal that, in the other bright Hii region complex G49.4−0.3, the 50, 60, and 68 km s−1 clouds show a complementary distribution, with two bridge features connecting between the 50 and 60 km s−1 clouds and the 60 and 68 km s−1 clouds. An isolated compact Hii region G49.57−0.27 located ∼15 pc north of G49.5−0.4 also shows a complementary distribution and a bridge feature. The complementary distribution on the sky and the broad bridge feature in the position–velocity diagram suggest collisional interactions among the four velocity clouds in W$\, 51\,$A. The timescales of the collisions can be estimated to be several 0.1 Myr as crossing times of the collisions, which are consistent with the ages of the Hii regions measured from the sizes of the Hii regions with the 21 cm continuum data. We discuss a scenario of cloud–cloud collisions and massive star formation in W$\, 51\,$A by comparing these with recent observational and theoretical studies of cloud–cloud collision.

We analyzed the TeV gamma-ray image of a supernova remnant RX J1713.7$-$3946 (RX J1713) through a comparison with the interstellar medium (ISM) and the non-thermal X-rays. The gamma-ray datasets at two energy bands of $>$2 TeV and $>$250-300 GeV were obtained with H.E.S.S. (H.E.S.S. Collaboration 2018; Aharonian et al. 2007) and utilized in the analysis. We employed a new methodology which assumes that the gamma-ray counts are expressed by a linear combination of two terms; one is proportional to the ISM column density and the other proportional to the X-ray count. We then assume these represent the hadronic and leptonic components, respectively. By fitting the expression to the data pixels, we find that the gamma-ray counts are well represented by a flat plane in a 3D space of the gamma-ray counts, the ISM column density and the X-ray counts. The results using the latest H.E.S.S. data at 4.8 arcmin resolution show that the hadronic and leptonic components occupy $(67\pm8)$% and $(33\pm8)$% of the total gamma rays, respectively, where the two components have been quantified for the first time. The hadronic component is greater than the leptonic component, which reflects the massive ISM of $\sim$10$^4$ $M_{\odot}$ associated with the SNR, lending support for the acceleration of the cosmic-ray protons. There is a marginal hint that the gamma rays are suppressed at high gamma-ray counts which may be ascribed to the second order effects including the shock-cloud interaction and the penetration-depth effect., 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

We report on CO and HI studies of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) G346.6$-$0.2. We find a wind-blown bubble along the radio continuum shell with an expansion velocity of $\sim10$ km s$^{-1}$, which was likely formed by strong stellar winds from the high-mass progenitor of the SNR. The radial velocities of the CO/HI bubbles at $V_\mathrm{LSR} = -82$-$-59$ km s$^{-1}$ are also consistent with those of shock-excited 1720 MHz OH masers. The molecular cloud in the northeastern shell shows a high-kinetic temperature of $\sim60$ K, suggesting that shock-heating occurred. The HI absorption studies imply that G346.6$-$0.2 is located on the far side of the Galactic center from us, and the kinematic distance of the SNR is derived to be $11.1_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$ kpc. We find that the CO line intensity has no specific correlation with the electron temperature of recombining plasma, implying that the recombining plasma in G346.6$-$0.2 was likely produced by adiabatic cooling. With our estimates of the interstellar proton density 280 cm$^{-3}$ and gamma-ray luminosity $< 5.8 \times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$, the total energy of accelerated cosmic rays $W_{\rm p} < 9.3 \times 10^{47}$ erg is obtained. A comparison of the age-$W_{\rm p}$ relation to other SNRs suggests that most of the accelerated cosmic rays in G346.6$-$0.2 have been escaped from the SNR shell., 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

We present $^{12}$CO ($J$ = 2-1), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = 2-1), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = 2-1) observations toward GMC-8, one of the most massive giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in M33 using ALMA with an angular resolution of 0".44 $\times$ 0".27 ($\sim$2 pc $\times$ 1pc). The earlier studies revealed that its high-mass star formation is inactive in spite of a sufficient molecular reservoir with the total mass of $\sim$10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$. The high-angular resolution data enable us to resolve this peculiar source down to a molecular clump scale. One of the GMC's remarkable features is that a round-shaped gas structure (the "Main cloud" ) extends over $\sim$50 pc scale, which is quite different from the other two active star-forming GMCs dominated by remarkable filaments/shells obtained by our series of studies in M33. The fraction of the relatively dense gas traced by the $^{13}$CO data with respect to the total molecular mass is only $\sim$2 %, suggesting that their spatial structure and the density are not well developed to reach an active star formation. The CO velocity analysis shows that the GMC is composed of a single component as a whole, but we found some local velocity fluctuations in the Main cloud and extra blueshifted components at the outer regions. Comparing the CO with previously published large-scale H I data, we suggest that an external atomic gas flow supplied a sufficient amount of material to grow the GMC up to $\sim$10$^6$ $M_{\odot}$., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal ; 10.3847/1538-4357/abeb65

Studying the driving modes of turbulence is important for characterizing the impact of turbulence in various astrophysical environments. The driving mode of turbulence is parameterized by $b$, which relates the width of the gas density PDF to the turbulent Mach number; $b\approx 1/3$, $1$, and $0.4$ correspond to driving that is solenoidal, compressive, and a natural mixture of the two, respectively. In this work, we use high-resolution (sub-pc) ALMA $^{12}$CO ($J$ = $2-1$), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = $2-1$), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = $2-1$) observations of filamentary molecular clouds in the star-forming region N159E (the Papillon Nebula) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to provide the first measurement of turbulence driving parameter in an extragalactic region. We use a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) analysis of the CO isotopologues to construct a gas density PDF, which we find to be largely log-normal in shape with some intermittent features indicating deviations from lognormality. We find that the width of the log-normal part of the density PDF is comparable to the supersonic turbulent Mach number, resulting in $b \approx 0.9$. This implies that the driving mode of turbulence in N159E is primarily compressive. We speculate that the compressive turbulence could have been powered by gravo-turbulent fragmentation of the molecular gas, or due to compression powered by H I flows that led to the development of the molecular filaments observed by ALMA in the region. Our analysis can be easily applied to study the nature of turbulence driving in resolved star-forming regions in the local as well as the high-redshift Universe., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. We present the results of analyses of the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), and 12CO (J=2-1) emission data toward Gum 31. Three molecular clouds separated in velocity were detected at -25, -20, and -10 km/s . The velocity structure of the molecular clouds in Gum 31 cannot be interpreted as expanding motion. Two of them, the -25 km/s cloud and the -20 km/s cloud, are likely associated with Gum 31, because their 12CO (J=2-1)/12CO (J=1-0) intensity ratios are high. We found that these two clouds show the observational signatures of cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs): a complementary spatial distribution and a V-shaped structure (bridge features) in the position-velocity diagram. In addition, their morphology and velocity structures are very similar to the numerical simulations conducted by the previous studies. We propose a scenario that the -25 km/s cloud and the -20 km/s cloud were collided and triggered the formation of the massive star system HD 92206 in Gum 31. This scenario can explain the offset of the stars from the center and the morphology of Gum 31 simultaneously. The timescale of the collision was estimated to be ~1 Myr by using the ratio between the path length of the collision and the assumed velocity separation. A.; Zech, A.; Zechlin, H.; Zhdanov, V., I; Zivec, M., The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for γ astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of γ cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of γ absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z=2 and to constrain or detect γ halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG . Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from γ astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We report the current status of the NASCO (NAnten2 Super CO survey as legacy) project which aims to provide all-sky CO data cube of southern hemisphere using the NANTEN2 4-m submillimeter telescope installed at the Atacama Desert through developing a new multi-beam receiver and a new telescope control system. The receiver consists of 5 beams. The four beams, located at the four corners of a square with the beam separation of 720′′, are installed with a 100 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The other beam, located at the optical axis, is installed with a 200 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The cooled component is modularized for each beam, and cooled mirrors are used. The IF bandwidths are 8 and 4 GHz for 100 and 200 GHz bands, respectively. Using XFFTS spectrometers with a bandwidth of 2 GHz, the lines of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O of J=1−0 or J=2−1 can be observed simultaneously for each beam. The control system is reconstructed on the ROS architecture, which is an open source framework for robot control, to enable a flexible observation mode and to handle a large amount of data. The framework is commonly used and maintained in a robotic field, and thereby reliability, flexibility, expandability, and efficiency in development are improved as compared with the system previously used. The receiver and control system are installed on the NANTEN2 telescope in December 2019, and its commissioning and science verification are on-going. We are planning to start science operation in early 2021.

Eirene Laskarina, empress of John III Batatzes of the exiled Byzantine Empire of Nicaea (1204--1261 CE), was an important Eastern Mediterranean figure in the first half of the thirteenth century. We reassess the date of Eirene's death, which has been variously dated between late 1239 and 1241, with the understanding that narrowing the range in which this event occurred contributes much to understanding the political situation in the area around 1240. George Akropolites, a famous official of the Empire, gives an account that connects Eirene's death to a comet that appeared "six months earlier", thus pointing to two comet candidates that were visible from the Eastern Mediterranean between 1239 and 1241, one recorded on "3 June 1239" and the other on "31 January 1240". Recent historians prefer the former, based on historical circumstances and without a critical assessment of the comet records. We revisit the historical records and reveal that the "3 June 1239" candidate was not a comet. On the other hand, the other candidate, sighted on "31 January 1240", was a comet, as supported by multiple historical records in multiple regions, and is also a good fit with Akropolites's narrative. Therefore, we conclude that Eirene died six months after the comet that was seen on 31 January 1240, which places her death in the summer of 1240. Given that the date of her death is crucial for determining some other contemporary events across the Eastern Mediterranean, our results offer a solid basis for further research on the thirteenth-century Eastern Mediterranean., 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We have analyzed new CO($J$ = 1-0) data in the region of a reflection nebula NGC 2023 with a particular focus on the detailed kinematical properties of the molecular gas. The results show that there are two velocity components which indicate signatures of dynamical interaction revealed at a high resolution of 19$''$ (= 0.04 pc). Based on the results we propose a hypothesis that two clouds collided with each other and triggered the formation of the B1.5 star HD 37903 in addition to 20 lower mass stars in two small clusters with a size of 2 pc. Although the previous study favored a scheme of triggering by the HII region (e.g., Mookerjea et al. 2009), the present results show that the effect of the HII region is limited only to the surface of the molecular cloud, and does not contribute to the gas compression and star formation. The present results lend support for the dominant role of cloud-cloud collision in forming high mass stars in addition to $\sim$20 lower mass stars, which are also likely formed by the collision. The Antennae Galaxies is one of the starbursts in major mergers. Tsuge et al. (2020) showed that the five giant molecular complexes in the Antennae Galaxies have signatures of cloud-cloud collisions based on the ALMA archival data at 60 pc resolution. In the present work we analyzed the new CO data toward the super star cluster (SSC) B1 at 14 pc resolution obtained with ALMA, and confirmed that two clouds show complementary distribution with a displacement of $\sim$70 pc as well as the connecting bridge features between them. The complementary distribution shows a good correspondence with the theoretical collision model (Takahira et al. 2014), and indicates that SSC B1 having $\sim$10$^{6}$ $M$$_{\odot}$ was formed by the trigger of a cloud-cloud collision with a time scale of $\sim$1Myr, which is consistent with the cluster age. It is likely that SSC B1 was formed from molecular gas of $\sim$10$^{7}$ $M$$_{\odot}$ with a star formation efficiency of $\sim$10 % in 1 Myr. We identified a few places where additional clusters are forming. Detailed gas motion indicates stellar feedback in accelerating gas is not effective, while ionization plays a role in evacuating the gas around the clusters at a $\sim$30-pc radius. Herein, we present results from observations of the 12CO (J = 1–0), 13CO (J = 1–0), and 12CO (J = 2–1) emission lines toward the Carina nebula complex (CNC) obtained with the Mopra and NANTEN2 telescopes. We focused on massive-star-forming regions associated with the CNC including the three star clusters Tr 14, Tr 15, and Tr 16, and the isolated WR-star HD 92740. We found that the molecular clouds in the CNC are separated into mainly four clouds at velocities −27, −20, −14, and −8 km s−1. Their masses are 0.7 × 104 M⊙, 5.0 × 104 M⊙, 1.6 × 104 M⊙, and 0.7 × 104 M⊙, respectively. Most are likely associated with the star clusters, because of their high 12CO (J = 2–1)/12CO (J = 1–0) intensity ratios and their correspondence to the Spitzer 8 μm distributions. In addition, these clouds show the observational signatures of cloud–cloud collisions. In particular, there is a V-shaped structure in the position–velocity diagram and a complementary spatial distribution between the −20 km s−1 cloud and the −14 km s−1 cloud. Furthermore, we found that SiO emission, which is a tracer of a shocked molecular gas, is enhanced between the colliding clouds by using ALMA archive data. Based on these observational signatures, we propose a scenario wherein the formation of massive stars in the clusters was triggered by a collision between the two clouds. By using the path length of the collision and the assumed velocity separation, we estimate the timescale of the collision to be ∼1 Myr. This is comparable to the ages of the clusters estimated in previous studies.

Star-forming (SF) regions embedded inside giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are potential contributors to Galactic gamma rays. The gamma-ray source 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is detected with a significance of roughly 13$\sigma$ in the 0.2 $-$ 300 GeV energy range after the removal of gamma-ray pulsation periods of PSR J1906+0722 from the Fermi-LAT data set of about 10 years. The energy spectrum of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is best-fitted to a power law model with a spectral index of 2.26 $\pm$ 0.05. The CO($J$ = 1$-$0) data taken by NANTEN2 revealed that 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is overlapping with a GMC having a peak velocity of about 38 km s$^{-1}$. The best-fitting location of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is measured to be approximately 0.13 degrees away from the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397 and it overlaps with a star that is associated with a bow-shock nebula. We show that there is no physical connection between 3FHL J1907.0+0713, 3C 397, as well as any positional coincidence with the pulsar. The spectrum of 3FHL J1907.0+0713 is fitting to both hadronic and leptonic gamma-ray emission models and the total luminosity at a distance of 2.6 kpc is calculated to be 1.1 $\times$ 10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also discuss possible SF origins of gamma rays from 3FHL J1907.0+0713, where SNRs, massive protostar outflows, stellar winds from runaway stars, colliding wind binaries, and young stellar clusters are considered as candidate sources., Comment: To be published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (accepted in 2020 December 7)

M16, the Eagle Nebula, is an outstanding \HII \ region which exhibits extensive high-mass star formation and hosts remarkable "pillars". We herein obtained new $^{12}$CO $J=$1-0 data for the region observed with NANTEN2, which were combined with the $^{12}$CO $J=$1-0 data obtained using FUGIN survey. These observations revealed that a giant molecular cloud (GMC) of $\sim 1.3 \times 10^5$ \Msun \ is associated with M16, which is elongated by over 30 pc and is perpendicular to the galactic plane, at a distance of 1.8 kpc. This GMC can be divided into the northern (N) cloud, the eastern (E) filament, the southeast (SE) cloud, the southeast (SE) filament, and the southern (S) cloud. We also found two velocity components (blue and red shifted component) in the N cloud. The blue-shifted component shows a ring-like structure, as well as the red-shifted component coincides with the intensity depression of the ring-like structure. The position-velocity diagram of the components showed a V-shaped velocity feature. The spatial and velocity structures of the cloud indicated that two different velocity components collided with each other at a relative velocity of 11.6 \kms. The timescale of the collision was estimated to be $\sim 4 \times 10^5$ yr. The collision event reasonably explains the formation of the O9V star ALS15348, as well as the shape of the Spitzer bubble N19. A similar velocity structure was found in the SE cloud, which is associated with the O7.5V star HD168504. In addition, the complementary distributions of the two velocity components found in the entire GMC suggested that the collision event occurred globally. On the basis of the above results, we herein propose a hypothesis that the collision between the two components occurred sequentially over the last several $10^{6}$ yr and triggered the formation of O-type stars in the NGC6611 cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication on PASJ

We present the results of ALMA observations in $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$), $^{13}$CO($J=2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($J=2-1$) lines and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward a massive ($\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$) giant molecular cloud associated with the giant H II region NGC 604 in one of the nearest spiral galaxy M33 at an angular resolution of 0''.44 $\times$ 0''.27 (1.8 pc $\times$ 1.1 pc). The $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO images show highly complicated molecular structures composed of a lot of filaments and shells whose lengths are 5 -- 20 pc. We found three 1.3 mm continuum sources as dense clumps at edges of two shells and also at an intersection of several filaments. We examined the velocity structures of $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) emission in the shells and filaments containing dense clumps, and concluded that expansion of the H II regions cannot explain the formation of such dense cores. Alternatively, we suggest that cloud--cloud collisions induced by an external H I gas flow and the galactic rotation compressed the molecular material into dense filaments/shells as ongoing high-mass star formation sites. We propose that multiple gas converging/colliding events with a velocity of a few tens km s$^{-1}$ are necessary to build up NGC 604, the most significant cluster-forming complex in the Local Group of galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We report on a study of the high-mass star formation in the the HII region W28A2 by investigating the molecular clouds extended over ~5-10 pc from the exciting stars using the 12CO and 13CO (J=1-0) and 12CO (J=2-1) data taken by the NANTEN2 and Mopra observations. These molecular clouds consist of three velocity components with the CO intensity peaks at V_LSR ~ -4 km s$^{-1}$, 9 km s$^{-1}$ and 16 km s$^{-1}$. The highest CO intensity is detected at V_LSR ~ 9 km s$^{-1}$, where the high-mass stars with the spectral types of O6.5-B0.5 are embedded. We found bridging features connecting these clouds toward the directions of the exciting sources. Comparisons of the gas distributions with the radio continuum emission and 8 um infrared emission show spatial coincidence/anti-coincidence, suggesting physical associations between the gas and the exciting sources. The 12CO J=2-1 to 1-0 intensity ratio shows a high value (> 0.8) toward the exciting sources for the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, possibly due to heating by the high-mass stars, whereas the intensity ratio at the CO intensity peak (V_LSR ~ 9 km s$^{-1}$) lowers down to ~0.6, suggesting self absorption by the dense gas in the near side of the +9 km s$^{-1}$ cloud. We found partly complementary gas distributions between the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, and the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +16 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. The exciting sources are located toward the overlapping region in the -4 km s$^{-1}$ and +9 km s$^{-1}$ clouds. Similar gas properties are found in the Galactic massive star clusters, RCW 38 and NGC 6334, where an early stage of cloud collision to trigger the star formation is suggested. High magnetic field (high-B) pulsars are key sources to bridge magnetars and conventional rotation powered pulsars, and thus to understand the origin of magnetar activities. We have estimated a tight upper-limit on the X-ray flux of one of the youngest high-B pulsars PSR J1208-6238 for the first time; a Chandra 10 ks observation shows no significant source. Low-energy (∼ MeV) cosmic rays (CRs) ionize molecular clouds and create the neutral iron line (Fe i Kα) at 6.4 keV. On the other hand, high-energy (≳GeV) CRs interact with the dense cloud gas and produce gamma rays. Based on a one-dimensional model, we study the spatial correlation among ionization rates of gas, 6.4 keV line fluxes, and gamma-ray emissions from a molecular cloud illuminated by CRs accelerated at an adjacent supernova remnant. We find that the spatial distributions of these three observables depend on how CRs intrude the cloud and on the internal structure of the cloud. If the intrusion is represented by slow diffusion, the 6.4 keV line should be detected around the cloud edge where ionization rates are high. On the other hand, if CRs freely stream in the cloud, the 6.4 keV line should be observed where gamma rays are emitted. In the former, the cooling time of the CRs responsible for the 6.4 keV line is shorter than their cloud crossing time, and it is opposite in the latter. Although we compare the results with observations, we cannot conclude whether the diffusion or the free-streaming is dominantly realized. Our predictions can be checked in more detail with future X-ray missions such as XRISM and Athena and by observations of ionization rates that cover wider fields.

We have analyzed the data from a large-scale CO survey toward the northern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) obtained with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) stand-alone mode of ALMA. The primary aim of this study is to comprehensively understand the behavior of CO as an H$_2$ tracer in a low-metallicity environment ($Z\sim0.2~Z_{\odot}$). The total number of mosaic fields is $\sim$8000, which results in a field coverage of 0.26$~$degree$^{2}$ ($\sim$2.9 $\times$10$^{5}$$~$pc$^2$), corresponding to $\sim$10$\%$ area of the galaxy. The sensitive $\sim$2$~$pc resolution observations reveal the detailed structure of the molecular clouds previously detected in the single-dish NANTEN survey. We have detected a number of compact CO clouds within lower H$_2$ column density ($\sim$10$^{20}$$~$cm$^{-2}$) regions whose angular scale is similar to the ACA beam size. Most of the clouds in this survey also show peak brightness temperature as low as $, Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables (including appendix). Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report detections of thermal X-ray line emission and proper motions in the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, the prototype of the small class of synchrotron dominated SNRs. Based on deep XMM-Newton observations, we find clear line features including Ne Lyα, Mg Heα, and Si Heα from the central portion of the remnant. The metal abundance ratios suggest that the thermal emission originates from core-collapse SN ejecta arising from a relatively low-mass (≲20 M⊙) progenitor. In addition, using XMM-Newton observations on a 13 yr time interval, we have measured expansion in the southeastern rim to be ~0.75″ yr−1 or ~3500 km s−1 at a distance of 1 kpc. Given this, we derive an upstream density to be ~0.01 cm−3, compatible with the lack of thermal X-rays from the shocked ambient medium. We also estimate the age of the remnant to be ~1200–1600 yr, roughly consistent with the idea that RX J1713.7-3946 is the remnant of SN 393.

We present two new radio continuum images from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These images are part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Early Science Project (ESP) survey of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The two new source lists produced from these images contain radio continuum sources observed at 960 MHz (4489 sources) and 1320 MHz (5954 sources) with a bandwidth of 192 MHz and beam sizes of 30.0"x30.0" and 16.3"x15.1", respectively. The median Root Mean Squared (RMS) noise values are 186$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (960 MHz) and 165$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1320 MHz). To create point source catalogues, we use these two source lists, together with the previously published Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) point source catalogues to estimate spectral indices for the whole population of radio point sources found in the survey region. Combining our ASKAP catalogues with these radio continuum surveys, we found 7736 point-like sources in common over an area of 30 deg$^2$. In addition, we report the detection of two new, low surface brightness supernova remnant candidates in the SMC. The high sensitivity of the new ASKAP ESP survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC planetary nebula sample, with 22 out of 102 optically known planetary nebulae showing point-like radio continuum emission. We report a Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray analysis for the Chamaeleon molecular-cloud complex using a total column density (NH) model based on the dust optical depth at 353 GHz ($\tau_{353}$) with the Planck thermal dust emission model. Gamma rays with energy from 250 MeV to 100 GeV are fitted with the NH model as a function of $\tau_{353}$, NH $\propto$ $\tau_{353}^{1/\alpha}$ ($\alpha$ $\geq$ 1.0), to explicitly take into account a possible nonlinear $\tau_{353}$/NH ratio. We found that a nonlinear relation, $\alpha$$\sim$1.4, gives the best fit to the $\gamma$-ray data. This nonlinear relation may indicate dust evolution effects across the different gas phases. Using the best-fit NH model, we derived the CO-to-H2 conversion factor (XCO) and gas mass, taking into account uncertainties of the NH model. The value of XCO is found to be (0.63-0.76) $\times$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ km$^{-1}$ s, which is consistent with that of a recent $\gamma$-ray study of the Chamaeleon region. The total gas mass is estimated to be (6.0-7.3) $\times$ 10$^{4}$ Msun, of which the mass of additional gas not traced by standard HI or CO line surveys is 20-40%. The additional gas amounts to 30-60% of the gas mass estimated in the case of optically thin HI and has 5-7 times greater mass than the molecular gas traced by CO. Possible origins of the additional gas are discussed based on scenarios of optically thick HI and CO-dark H2. We also derived the $\gamma$-ray emissivity spectrum, which is consistent with the local HI emissivity derived from LAT data within the systematic uncertainty of $\sim$20%, Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, accepted for ApJ

We examine the new Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) candidate, G23.11+0.18, as seen by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope. We describe the morphology of the candidate and find a spectral index of -0.63+/-0.05 in the 70-170MHz domain. A coincident TeV gamma-ray detection in High-Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) data supports the SNR nature of G23.11+0.18 and suggests that G23.11+0.18 is accelerating particles beyond TeV energies, thus making this object a promising new cosmic ray hadron source candidate. The remnant cannot be seen in current optical, infrared and X-ray data-sets. We do find, however, a dip in CO-traced molecular gas at a line-of-sight velocity of ~85 km/s, suggesting the existence of a G23.11+0.18 progenitor wind-blown bubble. Furthermore, the discovery of molecular gas clumps at a neighbouring velocity towards HESS J1832-085 adheres to the notion that a hadronic gamma-ray production mechanism is plausible towards the north of the remnant. Based on these morphological arguments, we propose an interstellar medium association for G23.11+0.18 at a kinematic distance of 4.6+/-0.8 kpc., 22 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present the results from the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer observation of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) HB9 (G160.9+2.6). We discovered recombining plasma (RP) in the western Suzaku observation region and the spectra here are well described by a model having collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) and RP components. On the other hand, the X-ray spectra from the eastern Suzaku observation region are best reproduced by the CIE and non-equilibrium ionization model. We discuss possible scenarios to explain the origin of the RP emission based on the observational properties and concluded that the rarefaction scenario is a possible explanation for the existence of RP. In addition, the gamma-ray emission morphology and spectrum within the energy range of 0.2$-$300 GeV are investigated using $\sim$10 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The gamma-ray morphology of HB9 is best described by the spatial template of radio continuum emission. The spectrum is well-fit to a log-parabola function and its detection significance was found to be $\sim$25$\sigma$. Moreover, a new gamma-ray point source located just outside the south-east region of the SNR's shell was detected with a significance of $\sim$6$\sigma$. We also investigated the archival HI and CO data and detected an expanding shell structure in the velocity range of $-10.5$ and $+1.8$ km s$^{-1}$ that is coinciding with a region of gamma-ray enhancement at the southern rim of the HB9 shell., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
