1. Effect of Switching from Salmeterol/Fluticasone to Formoterol/Budesonide Combinations in Patients with Uncontrolled Asthma

Abstract

Background: Combination therapy with an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) in a single inhaler is the mainstay of asthma management and salmeterol/fluticasone combination (SFC) and fixed-dose formoterol/budesonide combination (FBC) are currently available in Japan; however, there is nothing to choose between the two. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of switching from SFC to FBC in patients with asthma not adequately controlled under the former treatment regimen. Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled longitudinal study in 87 adult patients with an Asthma Control Questionnaire, 5-item version (ACQ5) score of greater than 0.75 under treatment with SFC 50/250 μg one inhalation twice daily (bid). SFC was switched to FBC 4.5/160 μg two inhalations bid. Study outcomes included ACQ5 score, peak expiratory flow (PEF), FEV1, and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) at the end of treatment period. Results: Eighty-three patients completed the study. ACQ5 scores improved and exceeded the clinically meaningful difference after 12 weeks of treatment and well-controlled asthma (ACQ5 score ≤0.75) was attained in 37 (44.6%) patients. Minimum and maximum PEF and FEV1 values improved significantly, but not FeNO values, after switching from SFC to FBC. Conclusions: Switching ICS/LABA combination therapy is a useful option in the management of asthma that is not optimally controlled.

2. Minimizing the opportunity costs of carbon mitigation on farmland via restoration of salinized soils

Abstract

Mass conversion of native vegetation to agricultural land-use triggered secondary salinity, a hydrological imbalance, which has damaged more than 1.75 million ha of farmland in south-western Australia. Various types of reforestation have been proposed and tested to restore the hydrological balance, however the economic returns from these cannot compete with existing farm practice and land-holders thus have a reluctance to adopt. An alternative approach has been to reforest abandoned saline areas with salinity and/or water-logging tolerant trees to avoid displacement of farming activities and to minimize opportunity costs. We propose an improved evaluation methodology for saline site reforestation and in this paper test its feasibility. Three eucalypts species (Eucalyptus salubris, E. camaldulensis and E. sargentii) were planted adjacent to a salt scald in Wickepin, Western Australia, and their survival and growth were monitored under increasing soil salinity ranging from moderate (ECe: 400-800 mS m-1), high (800-1,600 mS m-1) or extreme (>1,600 mS m-1) with shallow (< 1 m depth) saline ground water (EC: 2,000-3,000 mS m-1). Survival and growth of E. sargentii and E. salubris in the saline discharge areas were comparable to those in the arable area, and reforestation by these species can thus avoid land competition and opportunity costs.

Abstract

Large-scale afforestation is a key measure to mitigate global warming, however, implementation may result in land-use competition with agriculture. To avoid such competition, carbon mitigation methods using arid and semi-arid areas have been proposed, but to our knowledge there is no report of rates of sequestration based on long-term observations from actual experimentation. In this study (1999–2015), in an arid area near Leonora, Western Australia (annual rainfall: 220 mm year−1; pan evaporation: 3400 mm year−1), carbon sequestration was assessed in above and below ground biomass in Eucalyptus camaldulensis under ambient conditions and with active site amelioration (combination of water harvesting with large mounds and hardpan blasting). The carbon sequestration rate was estimated at 7.92 Mg-CO2-e ha−1 year−1 for a total carbon sink of 230 Mg-CO2-e ha−1. Carbon mitigation may thus be a viable option in arid regions, not only in Western Australia but globally, and can be enhanced with active site engineering.

Abstract

In this paper, we present and analyze a global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database, for the first time. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and USA. In addition to its global spatial coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover a time span of research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use were gathered along with the infiltration data, which makes the database valuable for the development of pedo-transfer functions for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements (~76 %) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on the land use is available for 76 % of experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type (~40 %). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for use by public domain only and can be copied freely by referencing it. Supplementary data are available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.885492. Data quality assessment is strongly advised prior to any use of this database. Finally, we would like to encourage scientists to extend/update the SWIG by uploading new data to it.

Abstract

Prediction of soil characteristics over large areas is desirable for environmental modeling. In arid environments, soil characteristics often show strong ecological connectivity with natural vegetation, specifically biomass and/or canopy cover, suggesting that the soil characteristics may be predicted from vegetation data. The objective of this study was to predict soil infiltration characteristics and horizon (soil layer) thickness using vegetation data for a large-scale water balance model in an arid region. Double-ring infiltrometer tests (at 23 sites), horizon thickness measurements (58 sites) and vegetation surveys (35 sites) were conducted in a 30 km × 50 km area in Western Australia during 1999 to 2003. The relationships between soil parameters and vegetation data were evaluated quantitatively by simple linear regression. The parameters for initial-term infiltration had strong and positive correlations with biomass and canopy coverage (R2 = 0.64 − 0.81). The horizon thickness also had strong positive correlations with vegetation properties (R2 = 0.53 − 0.67). These results suggest that the soil infiltration parameters and horizon thickness can be spatially predicted by properties of vegetation using their linear regression based equations and vegetation maps. The background and reasons of the strong ecological connectivity between soil and vegetation in this region were also considered.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To retrospectively analyze the prognostic implications of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings for patients with biopsy-proven nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP). METHODS Fifty-nine patients with NSIP (25 idiopathic NSIP, 34 collagen-vascular disease-associated NSIP) were included. Two chest radiologists independently evaluated the extent, presence, and distribution of various HRCT findings. Cox hazards analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between HRCT findings and prognosis. RESULTS The 5-year survival rate was 83% and the 10-year survival rate was 66%. Univariate analysis revealed that the extent of areas with ground-glass attenuation without traction bronchi-bronchiolectasis and that of airs-pace consolidation were associated with favorable outcome, whereas that of intralobular reticular opacities was associated with worse prognosis. Multivariate analysis showed that the extent of air-space consolidation was an independent factor of favorable outcome. CONCLUSION In NSIP, the extent of areas with ground-glass attenuation without traction bronchi-bronchiolectasis, air-space consolidation, and intralobular reticular opacities correlate with survival.

Abstract

近年の地球温暖化の対策技術の一つとして，乾燥地大規模植林による大気中CO2固定システムの構築が試みられている．乾燥地・半乾燥地は，地球上の陸地の約1/3に相当し，絶対的に雨水が不足しているために土地生産性が極端に低い．しかし，乾燥地では，多くの雨水が土壌に浸透せずに表面流出し，流れ込んだ集水池で無駄に蒸発している．表面流出水は，集めて植物の根域に浸透させることで植物成長に利用可能な水となる．それゆえ，乾燥地植林を行うには，植物利用可能な雨水（表面流出水）を有効利用できる適切な植林地選定が必要とされる．本報告では，西豪州乾燥地に設定した数km程度の流域内での水挙動を表現することを目的とした独自の表面流出モデルの構築を行った．10 mメッシュでの数値計算を行うにあたり，計算誤差を無視するのに必要とされる時間差分値の限界値を策定した．ついで，乾燥地での降雨時の流出挙動の実測値を計算結果と比較することにより，本モデルの二つのフィッティングパラメータを決定した．以上により，流域内の水挙動を表現するモデルを構築できた．

Abstract

We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy with S-1 and low-dose weekly cisplatin in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this phase II trial, previously untreated patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC were treated with oral administration of S-1 at 80 mg/m(2) for 21 days and three consecutive weekly low doses of cisplatin (25 mg/m(2)) followed by a 2-week rest period. Twenty-six patients were eligible for the assessment of efficacy and safety. Six partial responses were observed with an overall response rate of 23.1% (95% confidence interval: 12.3-31.6%). The median survival time and median progression-free survival were 13.4 months and 5.4 months, respectively. Grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were observed in 9 patients (34.6%), including one grade 4 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. As for non-hematologic adverse reactions, although grade 3 events were observed in 4 patients (15.3%), no severe renal toxicity or vomiting was found. S-1 and weekly low-dose cisplatin combination chemotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC showed an acceptable response rate, overall survival time, and toxicity. Because this regimen can be performed in an outpatient setting, it might be an alternative useful and convenient option. Further investigations with a large population are required to confirm our results.

Abstract

A high definition immunosensor for antigen and nonspecific protein was developed. Immunosensor has been studied for decades as highly sensitive and specific sensor device against any of the antigen materials. However no solid device has successfully discriminated the target antigen in mixture solution of nonspecific proteins. This is simply because large amount of physical adsorption of nonspecific molecule intervenes the specific detection of antigen molecule. In this study, fluorescence anisotropy measurement method is employed for direct monitoring of antibody molecule motion, and antigen antibody binding was detected with no interference of nonspecific adsorption. Abstract

To estimate forest biomass in a large area, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between attributes of stand structure obtained by remote sensing and woodland biomass. We examined stand structure and estimated woodland biomass in an arid region of Western Australia. The research site was near Leonora located 600 km from Perth in Western Australia. The annual rainfall is approximately 200 mm. The dominant woody vegetation species is Acacia aneura. The spatial characteristics of the woodland in this region are that woodland canopies are not closed and the tree crown silhouette is relatively clear-cut. We established 35 plots (main size, 50 m × 50 m) and the diameters at 1.3 and 0.3 m heights, tree height and canopy silhouette area of all trees in the plots were determined. Each tree biomass was calculated by allometric equations using a destructive sampling method. Results of regression analysis indicated that the appropriate stand structural attributes for estimation of woodland biomass were stand basal area (SBA), canopy coverage (CC) and leaf area index (LAI). Abstract

Global warming is a serious problem requiring immediate countermeasures. Large-scale afforestation in arid areas for the aim of absorbing CO2 is considered to be one of these measures and the research activities for it have been carried out in Leonora, Western Australia. In this study, the relationship between the biomass distribution and topographic features was examined in order to collect basic information for the selection of suitable afforestation regions in the research area using a biomass distribution map and some topographic elements. The results were as follows.(1) Plant growth is related to the movement of and the volume of runoff water derived from inequality of the ground, which leads to a biased distribution of nutrient accumulation and of surface soil thickness.(2) The total potential biomass estimated from the present topography is greater than the present biomass in the 30 km × 50 km research area. A mass of 319 kt-C could be absorbed in the research area without any improvements in the landform.(3) A substantial improvement on the environment utilizing vast arid areas by afforestation is necessary to fix enough carbon deterring global warming.

Immunosensor is an ideal kind of biosensor, which enables highly specific detection of any kind of biological molecules. However, in spite of long and intensive efforts of research and development, no immunosensor is in practical use. This is mainly because of the difficulty in reduction of the back ground noise of non-specific adsorption. In this study, fluorescence anisotropy decay principle was employed to avoide the disturbance of non-specific adsorption. Fluorescent labeled antibody, with Pyrene derivative, was immobilized on the surface of quartz substrate. Fluorescence anisotropy of immobilized antibody was measured by evanescent excitation stage. Antigen solution was administrated on the surface of the substrate and antigen antibody binding was detected as fluorescence anisotropy change. Detection of antigen at the concentration of as low as 100 fg/mL was demonstrated.

Abstract

Gasification characteristics were evaluated for various biomass samples such as softwoods and hardwoods. They were pyrolyzed at 1000 °C in a small scale fluidized bed under rapid heating condition with N2 flow. After keeping 10 min at the temperature, the produced char was gasified with 25% CO2 at 1000 °C. Char gasification characteristic was investigated by monitoring CO producing rate and the effects of woody biomass species on gasification rate and its time variation were examined. The conversion rate, dX/dt was plotted against the value of conversion. As a result, the following characteristic curves were observed mainly for softwoods; at nearly conversion X = 0.05, high reactivity peak was found, CO production was decreased first rapidly and then slowly until X = 0.5, and then almost followed volume reaction behavior. In order to elucidate the cause of this phenomenon, the high temperature char with bed material of alumina in the bed was cooled down under the N2 flow to the room temperature and the char and alumina particles were separated by sieving. The alumina particles became black which suggests existence of some carbonaceous materials. Then each sample was introduced into the fluidized bed and separately gasified in the same bed. The gasified gas analyses showed that gasification rapidly proceeded for alumina particles only at the first stage of its gasification which explained the peak of gas evolution at low conversion of the continuous in situ pyrolysis/gasification experiments. In case of hardwoods, the amount of carbonaceous materials remaining in bed materials was quite small and it does not affect the results of the in situ pyrolysis/gasification experiments. Gasification difference of the char separately collected depended on their own properties rather than the common properties in their group.

Abstract

Trichloroethylene (TCE) has an excellent degreasing capacity, so it is often used as a solvent for dry cleaning, and is still used for removing grease from metallic parts and so on. However, its inappropriate handling caused contamination of soil. Recently, its toxicity and carcinogenicity to humans have been concerned. By these reasons, it is highly required to remediate the contaminated soils. In the present study, the possibility of application of electrochemical treatment method to the in-situ decomposition of TCE is examined because in-situ remediation is expected to be simple and inexpensive. The experiment in the aqueous systems was conducted as a basic examination. As a result of comparing experimental values under various stirring speeds with the theoretical value calculated from mass transfer coefficient, it turned out that TCE transferring from bulk to the electrode surface is accelerated by the radicals in the boundary film near the electrode surface. Hence the TCE decomposition rate is affected by the radical formation rate or radical concentration in the boundary film. In the experiment with the soils, the TCE decomposition rate was much smaller than that in the aqueous systems. Moreover, the influence of the voltage was not observed. Therefore, it turned out that the movement of TCE in the aqueous phase near the electrode surface was the rate-controlling step in the soils. Under the condition, the TCE decomposition rate was not affected by the particle size. Consequently, it turned out TCE is not transported by bulk flow but is mostly transfered by molecular diffusion in the soil.

Abstract

At some point during acid leaching column tests of heavy metals from municipal waste incineration ash, sudden and rapid elution of harmful elements was observed which was called the breakthrough (BT) phenomena. The mechanism was elucidated from the results of measurement of elemental and particle size distribution in the column and batch leaching tests as follows. At the first stage of experimental runs, CaCO3 was dissolved in acidic solution and pH profile along the bed is formed. Some of the minor elements of Zn and Al dissolved by acid at the upper part of the column are precipitated at bottom of the column, leading to the reduction of flow rate of the leachate solution. After leachate pH becomes low by the termination of dissolution of Ca, these deposits are dissolved and thus, the flow rate increases. Most of the trace elements behave as such, which causes the increase of harmful element concentrations in the eluate. Some drastic concentration increase of harmful elements in leachate may occur even after the long period of pseudo stable dissolution behavior in the land-fill site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since interferon-alfa (IFN-α) and Sho-saiko-to (SST) are known to modulate immune responses, their immunological effects may be responsible for the induction of interstitial pneumonia. Additionally, fibroblasts play an important role in lung fibrosis. Therefore, the in vitro effects of IFN-α and/or SST on cytokine production of fibroblasts were examined. No difference in cytokine production was shown among natural IFN-α, IFN-α-2a, and IFN-α-2b. Fibroblasts from three control subjects and four patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) were used. Cells from the control and IPF groups produced interleukin-6 (IL-6) dose-dependently with either IFN-α or SST treatment. Combined administration of these agents produced greater IL-6 production. In all controls, interleukin-8 (IL-8) production by fibroblasts was increased with SST but suppressed with IFN-α. In contrast, in 2 of 4 IPF patients, IL-8 production was increased with IFN-α. More importantly, there was a greater production of IL-8 when stimulated with both IFN-α and SST in the IPF group. Proliferation of control and IPF fibroblasts was inhibited equally by each drug. These results suggest that fibroblast cytokine production, augmented by IFN-α and/or SST, may play a role in the development or exacerbation of interstitial pneumonia.

A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with cough and dyspnea on exertion. A chest X-ray film showed diffuse interstitial shadows. He had hyperpigmentation forming a network pattern around his neck and dystrophy of the fingernails and toenails, and was diagnosed as having dyskeratosis congenita. Histological examination of the lung specimen obtained from the left S4b by open lung biopsy revealed usual interstitial pneumonia pattern with neither asbestos bodies nor silicotic nodules. Taken together with previously published findings, pulmonary involvement is considered to be an important complication of dyskeratosis congenita.(Internal Medicine 33: 226-230, 1994)

Abstract

An unusual case with metastatic spread of a small oat cell lung carcinoma to the hypothalamo-pituitary region and pineal body presenting as pituitary insufficiency is reported. Computed tomographic scan revealed an isodense mass in the hypothalamo-pituitary region and pineal body that was strongly enhanced by contrast medium. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a downward displacement of the posterior lobe of the pituitary by the hypothalamo-pituitary mass. Dynamic assessment of hypothalamo-pituitary function showed hypopituitarism and diabetes insipidus; partial recovery was observed with the improvement in the carcinoma by chemotherapy. The brain was subsequently irradiated. The patient survived 10 months.

Low-dose methotrexate therapy has been used to treat a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases; a few studies have discussed the efficacy of this therapy for sarcoidosis. We present a patient with symptomatic sarcoidosis who was successfully treated with low-dose methotrexate after being refractory to steroids. This patient showed significant clinical improvement without development of any severe side effects. These findings suggest that low-dose methotrexate therapy may be a useful alternative treatment for sarcoidosis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE There are few standard therapeutic options beyond second-line treatment. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of erlotinib monotherapy as third-line chemotherapy in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer without epidermal growth factor receptor mutations. METHODS In this phase II trial, patients who did not have epidermal growth factor receptor mutations and who had previously received two cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens containing platinum were treated with erlotinib (150 mg, per os) until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. RESULTS Twenty patients were eligible for the assessment of efficacy and safety. Three cases showed a partial response, and eight cases showed stable disease with an overall response rate of 15.0% (95% confidence interval: 5.2-36.0%) and a disease control rate of 55.0% (95% confidence interval: 34.2-74.2%). Median progression-free survival and overall survival time were 2.1 and 6.7 months, respectively. Although dose reduction was required in one patient because of skin toxicity, grade 3/4 toxicity or pulmonary disease was not observed. CONCLUSIONS Erlotinib as third-line therapy showed an acceptable response rate, survival time and toxicity. It could be a potential third-line therapy for patients without epidermal growth factor receptor mutations.

Abstract

A 73-year-old man was admitted with high fever and right chest pain. Chest X-ray showed a rapidly growing mass shadow in the right lower lung field. The patient had been in remission for malignant lymphoma and had developed interstitial pneumonia and diabetes mellitus following 1 year of corticosteroid therapy. His illness was diagnosed as invasive aspergillosis because of a high level of beta-D-glucan and cultured Aspergillus fumigatus in the sputum. He was treated with a combination of micafungin and itraconazole. However, because these agents did not improve his clinical condition, transbronchial lung biopsy was performed. Histologically, Mucor hyphae were detected in these specimens. Micafungin and itraconazole were stopped and infusion of liposomal amphotericin B was initiated. Because his condition worsened, a right lower lobectomy was performed. Rhizopus Oryzae was detected in the lung tissue. We report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis in which mixed infection with A. fumigatus was suspected. Pulmonary mucormycosis is a life-threatening infection in which it is rare that an antemortem diagnosis is established and organisms are isolated. We believe diagnostic tests should be performed aggressively, even when pulmonary aspergillosis is suspected.

Summary Background Although idiopathic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) was initially identified as a provisional diagnosis, the 2008 American Thoracic Society Project concluded that idiopathic NSIP is a distinct form of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. However, an association between idiopathic NSIP and autoimmune diseases still attracts interest. In this context, a recent study proposed an intriguing concept that idiopathic NSIP is the pulmonary manifestation of undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD). However, this has not been confirmed in a large number of patients with idiopathic NSIP. The present study was conducted to investigate the proportion and characteristics of patients with idiopathic NSIP who meet the criteria for UCTD. Methods We reviewed 47 consecutive patients with idiopathic NSIP and examined whether they met prespecified criteria for UCTD. Furthermore, we compared the clinical characteristics between patients fulfilling the UCTD criteria (UCTD-NSIP) and those not meeting them (Non-UCTD-NSIP). Results Of 47 patients with idiopathic NSIP, 22 (47%) met the UCTD criteria. Common symptoms associated with connective tissue diseases (CTDs) were skin change (50%) and Raynaud's phenomenon (41%) in UCTD-NSIP. UCTD-NSIP showed a female predominance and significantly higher percentages of lymphocytes with a lower CD4/CD8 ratio in bronchoalveolar lavage than Non-UCTD-NSIP. Interestingly, UCTD-NSIP had a significantly better survival than Non-UCTD-NSIP. Conclusions Idiopathic NSIP included subjects who fulfilled the UCTD criteria, and these subjects had different clinical characteristics with significantly better outcome than those who did not meet the criteria. These data suggest that a part, but not all, of patients with idiopathic NSIP show CTD-like features with a distinct prognosis.

Abstract

We retrospectively studied clinical cases of lung cancer complicated by pulmonary aspergillosis. A total of 19 cases with average age of 69.5 years were encountered over the last 9 years. All had a history of smoking and 18 were men. In 2 cases, pulmonary aspergillosis and lung cancer were diagnosed concurrently. Pulmonary aspergillosis was diagnosed first in 4 cases and lung cancer was diagnosed first in 13 cases, in 11 of which pulmonary aspergillosis developed after surgery for lung cancer. In the non-operated group 5 cases had complications at the same site and 3 had complications at a different site. In the operated group, 10 cases subsequently had ipsilateral pulmonary aspergillosis and 1 case had contralateral pulmonary aspergillosis. Thirteen cases received antifungal medication. Lung cancer therapy is a risk factor for pulmonary aspergillosis. Careful medication is recommended.

Abstract

A 53-year-old man was hospitalized in April 2001 because of left cervical lymphadenopathy and a mass shadow in the left lingular segment. Bronchoscopy revealed an elevated lesion in the left main bronchus, but a biopsy showed no specific findings. A left cervical lymph node biopsy revealed lymphoid hyperplasia only and no malignancy. After the patient was discharged, bronchial irrigation solution from the left lingular segment was found to be positive for Mycobacterium intracellulare. In July 2001 the shadow in the left lingular segment had worsened, and bronchoscopy was performed again. This revealed ulceration in the left main bronchus and edematous narrowing of the bronchial lumen at the opening of the lingular segment. A granulated lesion accompained by severe inflammation was seen in a biopsied specimen taken from the same site. Bronchial lesion induced by an acid-fast-stain positive nontuberculosis mycobacteria was noted. Treatment with rifampicin (RFP), clarithromycin (CAM), ethambutol (EB), and streptomycin (SM) was started, but a rash most likely caused by RFP developed, and RFP was replaced by ciprofloxacin (CPFX). The treatment was continued and symptoms improved. Since non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis accompanied with bronchial lesions is rare, a case report was made.

Abstract

A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of bilateral multiple nodular shadows detected on a medical checkup chest X-ray film. Video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsy and hematoxylin eosin staining showed protrusion of the polypoid tumor tissue into the alveolar lumina, and the centers of nodules were occupied by hyalinized matrices. Immunohistochemical stain demonstrated that tumor cells were positive for factor VIII-related antigen, CD-34, and vimentin. The tumor was therefore diagnosed as pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (PEH). PEH usually grows slowly. Standard therapy for PEH has not yet been established. We have followed the patient for 2 years without any treatment, but no symptoms have appeared.

Abstract

Prediction of soil characteristics over large areas is desirable for environmental modeling. In arid environments, soil characteristics often show strong ecological connectivity with natural vegetation, specifically biomass and/or canopy cover, suggesting that the soil characteristics may be predicted from vegetation data. The objective of this study was to predict soil infiltration characteristics and horizon (soil layer) thickness using vegetation data for a large-scale water balance model in an arid region. Double-ring infiltrometer tests (at 23 sites), horizon thickness measurements (58 sites) and vegetation surveys (35 sites) were conducted in a 30 km × 50 km area in Western Australia during 1999 to 2003. The relationships between soil parameters and vegetation data were evaluated quantitatively by simple linear regression. The parameters for initial-term infiltration had strong and positive correlations with biomass and canopy coverage (R2 = 0.64 – 0.81). The horizon thickness also had strong positive correlations with vegetation properties (R2 = 0.53 – 0.67). These results suggest that the soil infiltration parameters and horizon thickness can be spatially predicted by properties of vegetation using their linear regression based equations and vegetation maps. As a countermeasure against global warming, large scale afforestation of arid land which is hardly used for crop cultivation has been receiving attention. By large scale afforestation, atmospheric CO2 will be fixed into plants. In arid land, however, most of the rainwater is lost by runoff and evaporation. Effective use of rainwater is required for afforestation. Thus, we made an original runoff model to evaluate water distribution in our research area in Western Australia. In this study, first of all, we tested the effect of the treatment way of the water movement around the watershed, and secondly, the effect of rainfall input method on the numerical estimation results of water level change.

Recently, the photocatalytic activity of titania has attracted considerable attention for solving various environmental problems. Photocatalysis is considered to be effective in air purification, water purification, and used for dealing with various types of environmental pollution. The smaller the particle size of titania, the faster the photocatalysis proceeds. Since our previous study revealed that the modification of synthesis process reduced the particle size of silica, we attempted to apply this process to synthesise titania, with an objective of obtaining titania with high photocatalytic activity. This paper describes an unconventional gas-phase synthetic method involving high-temperature hydrolysis.

Biomass has been focused as a fuel resource because of its huge abundance and carbon-neutral characteristics. Thus, we attempted to use tree biomass as the resource to automotive fuel. From the global warming point of view, the biomass energy production from large-scale plantation is required, however, the land use should not be changed from crop field or forest land. In the present paper, the feasibility of the use in Japan of biofuel from woody biomass produced in large arid area of Western Australia, where the present authors demonstrated that the large-scale afforestation is possible even in an arid land when introducing water management and plantation technologies, has been evaluated using LCA method, by considering the actual condition of our afforestation area. Furthermore, some sensitivity analysis is conducted on the effects of composition ratio of electric power sources.

Abstract

Lithium ion battery is one of the most promising technologies for electric power storage and soft energy path. However, inadequate handling of Lithium ion battery may cause spontaneous ignition. To reduce the risk of such accidents, changes of Lithium ion battery during repetitive charge and discharge cycles were investigated. By 400 cycles of charge and discharge, battery capability was reduced to about 80% of new one. After charge/discharge experiment, composition of organic materials in the electrolyte was analyzed by GC-FID. Gradual rise of diethyl fluorophosphate concentration in the electrolyte was observed. Surface structures of the electrodes were also investigated by SEM and XRD. XRD data of anode electrode also showed gradual decrease of diffraction angle. This suggests the increase of lattice constant during the deterioration process. Reflecting such structural change of molecular scale, morphological change of electrode surface was also observed. Surface grain of cathode electrode had more numbers of cracking with increasing cycle numbers. Image of cell volume change was captured by X-ray CT. Volume expansion of battery occurred in rectangular 006P type battery. These results may be caused by asymmetric dissociation and association of Lithium ion on the cathode surface. Abstract

Among the various energy conversion technologies of the biomass, the fluidized bed is one of the devices used for its gasification. However, we pointed out the agglomerates of the bed materials surrounding char particles are observed in the bed. In the present study we carried out pyrolysis of Japanese cypress in a small fluidized bed reactor device with nitrogen flow. After cooling down, we sieved the solid in the bed and only recovered agglomerates. Afterwards we extracted solvent-soluble organic matter with chloroform/methanol solvent from agglomerates, and its yield was determined. The residual of the extraction was again sieved, and agglomerates yield after extraction and reduction in the agglomeration yield were determined. Agglomerates after extraction were incinerated in an electric furnace and determined solvent-insoluble organic matter yield. Finally, the relation between solvent-soluble organic matter yield and reduction in agglomerates yield, and that between solvent-insoluble organic matter yield and agglomerates yield after extraction were examined. Abstract

Biodiesel attracts attention as an alternative to fossil fuel. Though the raw material of biodiesel is renewable and carbon neutral, in the conventional method the product is contaminated with the homogeneous alkali catalyst. Hence, the application of the anion-exchange resin was used as the solid base catalyst. While the method of using the anion-exchange resin has already been reported, a problem in durability remains. In the present paper, the reaction mechanism of the transesterification using the anion-exchange resin was examined. As a result, it was suggested that the ion exchange between the hydroxyl ion of the resin and the methoxide ion of the methanol occurred first in the transesterification when the anion-exchange resin was used. The fatty acid was generated by hydrolysis of triglyceride because the water was generated along with this ion exchange reaction. Then, the methoxide type anion-exchange resin without hydroxyl group was made as starting material for experiments. The applicability of the methoxide type anion-exchange resin to the fixed bed reactor in the biodiesel manufacturing process was examined. Abstract

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is known as one of the persistent pollutants of soil and groundwater. TCE has carcinogenicity and should urgently be decontaminated. In this research, Fenton reaction and ultrasonic (US) irradiation were used for TCE decomposition as low cost and widely targetable advanced oxidation processes. First of all, our previous results related to the TCE decomposition is reviewed. Then the recent results are reported. Reaction temperature was set at 15°C in order to prevent TCE volatilization. By the ultrasonic irradiation method, it was confirmed that the distribution of the US strength is also most flat inside the reaction vesssel, except the vicinity of the bottom, and TCE was slowly decomposed at constant rate irrespective of the fluctuation of power of the transducer. For the Fenton reaction, TCE-saturated solution (1.0 g/L) added with Fe ion was mixed with hydrogen peroxide solution. The decomposition rate of TCE by the Fenton reaction was measured and compared using both of ferrous ion (Fe2+) and ferric ion (Fe3+). Fairly amount of TCE was immediately decomposed after a reaction start (mixing of solutions) when Fe2+ was used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective To investigate the prognostic significance of histopathological characteristics in patients with biopsy-proven rheumatoid lung disease (RLD). Materials and methods Retrospective analysis was conducted on samples from 54 RLD patients who underwent surgical lung biopsies (SLBs) at Hamamatsu University Hospital and affiliated hospitals between 1980 and 2009. The overall survival rate, the spectrum of histopathological diagnosis and their associated prognostic significance were investigated. Results The study group consisted of 30 men and 24 women with a median age of 60.3 years. Histopathological analysis revealed the following: usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), 15 cases; nonspecific interstitial pneumonia/fibrosis, 16 cases; organizing pneumonia, 4 cases; unclassifiable, 2 cases; desquamative interstitial pneumonia, 1 case; and bronchiolar disease, 16 cases. In survival outcome, 10 yr survival rate was 76.6%. Patients with UIP had significantly worse prognosis than those with non-UIP (RLD cases except those with UIP) (p = 0.0452). Conclusion RLD includes several histopathological groups. Patients with UIP have worse survival than those with other types of RLD. Histopathological diagnosis may have a major impact on prognostication in patients with RLD.

This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License., In this paper, we present and analyze a novel global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and the USA. In addition to its extensive geographical coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use was gathered along with the infiltration data, making the database valuable for the development of pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements ( ∼ 76%) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on land use is available for 76 % of the experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type (∼ 40%). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for public domain use only and can be copied freely by referencing it.
