The so-called Lindblad equation, a typical master equation describing the dissipative quantum dynamics, is shown to be solvable for finite-level systems in a compact form without resort to writing it down as a set of equations among matrix elements. Abstract

This article describes the design rationale, a C implementation, and conformance testing of a subset of the new Standard for the BLAS (Basic Linear Algebra Subroutines): Extended and Mixed Precision BLAS. Permitting higher internal precision and mixed input/output types and precisions allows us to implement some algorithms that are simpler, more accurate, and sometimes faster than possible without these features. The new BLAS are challenging to implement and test because there are many more subroutines than in the existing Standard, and because we must be able to assess whether a higher precision is used for internal computations than is used for either input or output variables. We have therefore developed an automated process of generating and systematically testing these routines. Our methodology is applicable to languages besides C. In particular, our algorithms used in the testing code will be valuable to all other BLAS implementors. Our extra precision routines achieve excellent performance--close to half of the machine peak Megaflop rate even for the Level 2 BLAS, when the data access is stride one.

Abstract

Purpose We investigated the effects of oral and ocular administration of crocetin in a murine retinal vein occlusion (RVO) model. Crocetin is a type of carotenoid contained in the fruit of gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) and the stigma of saffron (Crocus staruts L). Methods This study was performed on a murine RVO model, which was created by laser irradiation of retinal veins. We evaluated the retinal thickness after the oral administration of crocetin (100 mg/kg) 1 and 6 h before laser irradiation, and immediately, 6 h, 12 h, and 18 h after laser irradiation in the murine RVO model. In addition, we measured the retinal layer thickness after administration of crocetin eye drops (0.03% or 0.10%) immediately, 6 h, and 12 h after laser irradiation. Western blotting of retinal tissue was used to determine the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9), tumor nuclear factor (TNF-α), and occludin after oral administration of crocetin. Results Oral and ocular administration of crocetin improved retinal edema in the murine RVO model. Crocetin administration statistically significantly suppressed overexpression of MMP-9 and TNF-α, and reversed the reduction of occludin. Conclusions These findings indicate that crocetin can protect retinal tight junctions by suppressing retinal edema through an anti-inflammatory effect, which suggests that crocetin may be useful for RVO disease.

Abstract

Background: Molecules that are highly expressed in tumour endothelial cells (TECs) may be candidates for specifically targeting TECs. Using DNA microarray analysis, we found that the lysyl oxidase (LOX) gene was upregulated in TECs compared with its expression in normal endothelial cells (NECs). LOX is an enzyme that enhances invasion and metastasis of tumour cells. However, there are no reports on the function of LOX in isolated TECs. Methods: TECs and NECs were isolated to investigate LOX function in TECs. LOX inhibition of in vivo tumour growth was also assessed using beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN). Results: LOX expression was higher in TECs than in NECs. LOX knockdown inhibited cell migration and tube formation by TECs, which was associated with decreased phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (Tyr 397). Immunostaining showed high LOX expression in human tumour vessels in vivo. Tumour angiogenesis and micrometastasis were inhibited by BAPN in an in vivo tumour model. Conclusion: LOX may be a TEC marker and a possible therapeutic target for novel antiangiogenic therapy.

As demand increases, ore quality diminishes and a reduction in CO2 emissions is required, quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. Metallurgical testing methods that use a small volume of sample are described, focusing on magnetite ore that is effective in reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately for the three stages: heating, primary melt formation in the adhering layer of fine pseudoparticles, and assimilation of the particle nucleus within calcium ferrite melts.
