We theorise that there is an asymmetric linkage in the public mind between borrowing and public spending, on the one hand, and borrowing and taxation, on the other. This experiment is designed to test the hypothesis that under conditions of high-salience government borrowing, not only do the public become less averse to the prospect of spending cuts in order to reduce borrowing, but also that they become more fiscally conservative on the question of taxation versus spending, preferring spending cuts to tax increases even in an explicitly balanced budget scenario.

This is the registration for the protocol of a scoping review titled 'Pedobarography in the clinical gait assessment of children and adults’. There are no prior registrations.

An analysis plan, registered prior to data collection, for a survey experiment to understand the effect (or not) on mass attitudes of drawing various rhetorical connections between the COVID-19 pandemic and different (potential) state interventions in the economy.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic constituted a large shock to the risk of acquiring a disease that represents a meaningful threat to health. We investigate whether individuals subject to larger increases in objective health risk -- operationalised by occupation-based measures of proximity to other people -- became more supportive of increased government healthcare spending during the crisis. Using panel data which tracks UK individuals before and after the outbreak of the pandemic, we implement a fixed-effect design which was pre-registered before the key treatment variable was available to us. While individuals in high-risk occupations were more worried about their personal risk of infection, and had higher COVID death rates, there is no evidence that increased health risks during COVID-19 shifted attitudes on government spending on healthcare, nor broader attitudes relating to redistribution. Our findings are consistent with recent research demonstrating the limited effects of the pandemic on political attitudes.

Our goal with this study is to establish whether left-wing parties are perceived as more likely to increase levels of government borrowing, as compared to right-wing parties and/or centre parties. There is something of a folk wisdom that this perception does exist, as seen in assertions of its existence in papers that study issues relating to this issue (e.g. Cusack 1999; Eichengreen and Panizza 2016; Kraft 2017). While those papers have found no evidence that left-wing governments actually do lead to higher levels of government borrowing, to our knowledge, there are no papers that establish whether the perception of left debt-profligacy actually exists amongst the citizens/voters as a whole. In this project, we first seek to establish whether citizens/voters, on average, hold this view of left-wing parties. Following that, if appropriate, we seek to establish why such perceptions exist.

Pre-registered panel study of citizen responses to UK's COVID-19 economic rescue

The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between economic inequality and support for public goods. More specifically, we seek to examine how exposure to information about income inequality shapes Americans’ level of support for a costly new investment in a popular public good (repairs to surface transportation infrastructure).

Recent studies have advocated for early adoption of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in order to help a broader range of youth become creators rather than consumers of digital media, to open doors for opportunity in the lucrative technology sector, and to set them on a course for lifelong STEM/ICT learning. This study used data that was collected from a grant funded, multi-site, after-school program designed to help a group of students who are often underrepresented in ICT learn about computing through a unique instructional design for guiding students through the creation of mobile apps using a freely accessible block-based coding platform developed by MIT called App Inventor. The study employed a concurrent, triangulation mixed methods approach to data analysis. Data sources included participant-observer field notes, interviews, student artifacts, online surveys, and an assessment of outcomes related to a construct called computational thinking. The purpose of the intervention and this proposed study was to examine whether participants in the program learned coding and related concepts, developed an interest in STEM/ICT subject matter, and gained an optimistic view of their abilities related to 21st century computing skills. In addition, the researcher hoped to identify which aspects of the instructional design may have facilitated progress towards these goals.
