Seismica, a new Diamond Open Access journal in Seismology and Earthquake Science, launched in July 2022. One year into production, we have received 90 submissions, published 25 articles and have over 50 works in the pipeline. Seismica is an independent journal, designed and built by a global community of researchers with the aim of making scientific research freely available, with no publication or subscription fees.Beyond traditional research articles, Seismica publishes an innovative set of peer-reviewed reports including fast reports, null results/failed experiments, software reports, and instrument deployment/field campaign reports. Seismica accepts papers within the very broad scope of fault slip and earthquake source phenomena, earthquake records, imaging the Earth, theoretical and computational seismology, beyond Earth-tectonic applications, techniques and instrumentation, earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, and earthquake education, community engagement, and other social science methods.The new journal's philosophy was developed through continuous communication among broader community members and strives to be accessible, transparent, respectful, credible, and progressive. In the past year, Seismica has evolved both as a journal and a community dedicated to transparency in science, and supporting not not only open access articles, but also a fully open research process. Seismica addresses community needs by publishing public reviews along with the paper, promoting a fair and unbiased reviewing process while providing an insider look into reviewing that benefits early-career researchers; valuing time and expertise by crediting all contributors to a publication; encouraging preprint sharing; allowing authors to keep the copyright to their work; and helping authors share and promote their research once published.The need for a Diamond Open Access journal and the necessity to share seismology research for broader community benefits is evident. The successful launch and growth of Seismica in the past year demonstrates that this model is responsive, inclusive and sustainable.

Seismica is a community-led, volunteer-run, diamond open-access journal for seismology and earthquake science, and Seismica's mission and core values align with the principles of Open Science. This article describes the editorial workflow that Seismica uses to go from a submitted manuscript to a published article. In keeping with Open Science principles, the main goals of sharing this workflow description are to increase transparency around academic publishing, and to enable others to use elements of Seismica's workflow for journals of a similar size and ethos. We highlight aspects of Seismica's workflow that differ from practices at journals with paid staff members, and also discuss some of the challenges encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned while this workflow was developed and deployed over Seismica's first year of operations.

Climate change is increasingly predisposing polar regions to large landslides. Tsunamigenic landslides have occurred recently in Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), but none have been reported from the eastern fjords. In September 2023, we detected the start of a 9-day-long, global 10.88-millihertz (92-second) monochromatic very-long-period (VLP) seismic signal, originating from East Greenland. In this study, we demonstrate how this event started with a glacial thinning-induced rock-ice avalanche of 25 × 106 cubic meters plunging into Dickson Fjord, triggering a 200-meter-high tsunami. Simulations show that the tsunami stabilized into a 7-meter-high long-duration seiche with a frequency (11.45 millihertz) and slow amplitude decay that were nearly identical to the seismic signal. An oscillating, fjord-transverse single force with a maximum amplitude of 5 × 1011 newtons reproduced the seismic amplitudes and their radiation pattern relative to the fjord, demonstrating how a seiche directly caused the 9-day-long seismic signal. Our findings highlight how climate change is causing cascading, hazardous feedbacks between the cryosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article highlights a study on seismic attenuation beneath the Lesser Antilles arc, an end-member system that slowly subducts old, tectonized lithosphere to understand the view of fundamental mantle wedge processes. It focuses on the end-member Lesser Antilles arc (LAA) system due to its slow consumption of old (80 to 120 million years), slow-spread lithosphere and also shows the l variations in the hydration state of the oceanic lithosphere before its subduction into the Antilles trench.

This article presents a summary of the keynote speech presented at the ITEEA Conference in Columbus, OH, March 4, 2013, by Steven Hicks. Hicks is former Director, Research & Development, Flavor & Fragrance Development Global Capability, for the Procter & Gamble Company. Educated as a chemical engineer, his outside interests include advocacy for better math and science teaching in public education. A STEM advocate for many years, Hicks says that his conviction comes from the belief that the competitive advantage of America must come from superior innovation. He says that America seriously risks losing that advantage, as American's did in manufacturing and services, if America doesn't get really serious about investing in making it greater. He further posits that America needs to be graduating not just more, but better-skilled engineers and scientists. Ten years from now, American corporations need to believe again that the very best engineers on the planet are coming out of U.S. schools. Hicks offers his personal list of what he believes are necessary skills for the innovators of the future, and closes by challenging educators to inspire their students to love technology, to be creative, and to teach their students to love the disciplines of math and science.

This paper presents the results from the final phase of a major UK research programme, where an 11,4-m span composite beam and companion push tests were undertaken to investigate the load-slip performance of multiple stud connectors. The tests showed that the resistance of three studs per rib was no better than two studs per rib, thereby indicating that the design equations in BS 5950-3.1 and ANSI/AISC 360-10 were unconservative by up to 45%. As a direct result of this work, an amendment was made to BS 5950-3.1 in 2010. Although the beam tests demonstrated the ductile performance of studs in current UK-profiled steel sheeting, the problem remained that if new sheeting prod-ucts were developed, it would be difficult to identify cases when the behaviour was poor unless beam tests were undertaken. In response to this problem, this paper also presents the development of an improved standard push test, which reflects the conditions that exist in a real beam more closely. As opposed to other international investigations, the improved test was calibrated directly against real beam behaviour by considering the load-slip performance of the shear connec-tors within the three beam tests that were undertaken in the current research programme.
