Abstract

The nuclear fuel cycle represents the nuclear power generation process, from mining the uranium ore to the treatment of waste. The fuel cycle is divided into two parts, the front end of the process and the back end of the process, with the nuclear power station being in the middle1. The processes before reaching the nuclear power station consist of uranium exploration, mining, refining, isotope enriching and fuel element fabrication1. Uranium is mined in twenty countries, but 52% of the world supply of uranium comes from just 6 countries. These countries are Canada, Australia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Namibia and Niger. Uranium is mined in several different types of mine. These include an open pit mine, an underground mine or in-situ leaching mine. In an open pit mine the ore lies close to the surface and the overlying layer of rock is removed creating a large pit where the ore is easily extractable. An underground mine is used when the ore lies deeper under the surface and the construction of access shafts and tunnels under the ground are needed to gain access to the uranium ore. The uranium ore is sometimes contained in ground water or a porous material, such as sand. In this case, a process called in-situ leaching is used to extract the uranium ore. Either acid or alkali (depending on the nature of the groundwater) is added to the ground water to dissolve the ore, and the resulting solution is pumped out. The ore then undergoes a milling process to extract the uranium oxides needed for fuel fabrication. Milling is normally carried out close to the mine where the ore has been extracted. The ore is crushed and then leached with sulphuric acid in order to dissolve the uranium oxides.

5. Toward Reflective Admission Work. Part 1: Making the Case for a Transformative Approach to Admission Practice and Reflection in Action

Abstract

This article is a research project which explores that problem with a particular view toward underrepresented students whose life and profile often do not match the life and profile of admission officers who recruit and select them. The authors assert that if vast changes are made with regard to the experiences and the richness that underrepresented students bring to campuses, admission staff must make counter-cultural shifts in how they view their work. They must also generate methods of daily practice that ensure that a diversity of voices can always be heard, and on equal terms. Institutions must think about how to generate such possibilities on their campus for their admission staff, regardless of the previous history of success or cultural make-up of the student body. Rhetoric about "all children" abounds in public education, yet many aspects of schooling continues to marginalize large numbers of students. Despite good intentions, the assumptions, attitudes, and conditions that can preclude students' success are often invisible to educational policymakers and practitioners. These students are not invisible to the deeply committed people the others got to know in the course of doing this retrospective study of SEED in Elk Grove Schools. They are struck by the potential for these professional learning communities to challenge assumptions that often fuel low expectations and alienate learning environments for students.

Mark and Melissa Hicks, Americans who moved to the UK for work, were inspired by the Queen's love for Defenders and decided to buy their own. After a year of searching, they found a 1999 Td5 110 in great condition and decided to restore it to perfection. 33. Lessons from Rental Cars: The Struggle to Create Seeing Communities

Abstract

This article takes the ordinary workings of colorblindness--overlooking distinguishing factors and characteristics that mark what it is to be--and problematizes the impact of being blind to the human conditions students and families of color bring to the educational setting. Hicks argues that, even among actors committed to lessening its power, the negative tenets of colorblindness sneak into our practices and policies. Using Appiah and Gutmann's (1996) notion of "color consciousness"--a conception of noticing and learning from our inherent differences--Hicks posits how being conscious of difference not only enriches cross-cultural relationships, but opens spaces for deeper learning. He supports his argument by revisiting an experience of documenting a multicultural public school that successfully employs color-conscious pedagogical strategies. He closes by challenging theorists and practitioners to be intentional in creating conditions for consciousness to thrive in schools.
