17. Principled, Transformational Leadership: Analyzing the Discourse of Leadership in the Development of Librarianship's Core Competences

Abstract

Using discourse analysis, this article explores three questions: (a) Why was "principled, transformational leadership" the leadership style added to Core Competences? (b) What was the discourse of leadership in the profession surrounding the development of the Core Competences? (c) How might this competence affect LIS education? And what measures, if any, have MLIS programs taken to address it? Informants involved in the development of the Core Competences indicated that leadership was added because it is an important issue for LIS professionals and it links "transformational" to professional change; however, they were unable to provide a clear explanation for the descriptor "principled." Discursively, leadership is strongly tied to discourses of management, change, and youth. Preparing leaders is a stated goal of most ALA-accredited LIS programs; however, the discourse on leadership within the profession indicates that schools of LIS may be paying more attention to leadership within their curricula, specifically in management classes. 18. Predictors of the Influences on Persistence for African American Students at Moderately Selective Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

The researcher investigated three types of factors, academic, commitment, and social on college sophomore's decisions to persist at predominately White institutions. The academic factors (academic integration, academic rigor), commitment (goal commitment and institutional commitment) and social factors (social integration and racial climate) were measured using modified versions of the Cultural Climate and Attitudes Survey, the Institutional and Integration Scale, and the National Survey of Student Engagement. College GPA, a third academic factor was self-reported. The participants were 566 students from three large public predominantly White institutions. Survey results were analyzed using hierarchical multiple linear regression. The results showed that the contribution of social integration, rigor, institutional and goal commitments are significant predictors to persistence (institutional commitment ß=0.59, p<01, social integration ß=0.14, p<0.01, goal commitment ß=0.11, p<0.01, rigor ß=0.11, p<0.01). Demographic variables, gender and age (gender: ß=-0.07, p<0.01, and age: ß=-0.01, p<0.01) significantly impacted the persistence. While campus racial climate did not significantly predict persistence, it was a significant predictor of institutional commitment (ß=0.19, p<0.01), which was the strongest predictor of persistence (ß =0.59, p<0.01). Implications of the study suggests that predominately White institutions should focus on the social integration of all of its students regardless of ethnicity, the maintenance of rigorous academic programs, and creating a welcoming campus racial climate, as well as support systems that improve student's commitment to graduating from the institutions to improve student persistence. 20. The Practice of Mentoring: Reflecting on the Critical Aspects for Leadership Development

Abstract

Mentorship is often considered one of the best ways to develop leadership potential in new library and information professionals. Mentors act as teacher, role model, and cheerleader, but there are potentially serious aspects to mentorships that will negatively impact the protege. Such negatives include mentors sabotaging or taking credit for a protege's work; personality clashes; abusive relationship behaviors such as sexual harassment, verbal abuse, controlling behavior, and jealousy; or the mentor using the protege as a lackey. And, what effect does a dysfunctional mentoring relationship have on a protege? How can these serious negative behaviors be avoided? This discussion paper looks at the risks of mentoring as a way to develop leaders in LIS and provides suggestions for improving mentoring relationships so that it can be an even more effective tool for developing leadership in LIS. It is time to look at mentorships in a more critical and reflective light for the benefit of mentors, proteges, and the profession at large.

21. Back to OZ? Rethinking the Literary in a Critical Study of Reading

Abstract

Drawing on data gathered during a fourteen-month study of reading practices among poor and working-class girls, this essay explores the challenges of creating a responsive and critical reading pedagogy across boundaries of class. Set largely in a summer and after-school reading program for pre-teen girls, the study addressed the question of how a pedagogy centered around literature might accord the possibility for girls to read, speak, and value in more than one class-specific voice. The complexities of creating such a critical reading project are explored through narratives that chronicle the interplay of the material, the psychological, and the discursive in girls' textual preferences and literary responses. Assuming the dual voice of teacher and ethnographer, the author argues for a new poetics of inquiry that can convey the nuanced complexities of reading, voice, and psychological experience among girls growing up in working-poor America.

Abstract

This book describes the classrooms and homes of working class children struggling not only to learn to read but also to deal with the kind of subjectivity that literacy simultaneously holds out to and refuses them. One theme threaded throughout the book concerns the ways in which students' engagements with literacies are connected with their own histories. The chapters draw upon mixed genres, including narrative histories of children's lives and engagements with literacies, interpretive readings of other histories of engagement with literacies, and essayist reflections on educational theory and practice. The narratives highlight how working class students engage with middle class literacies and how those engagements are interwoven with relations with others. Two chapters describe how two working class K-2 students participated in literacy practices as they moved between the social worlds of home and school. The histories of these children are framed by reflective chapters that also consider narratives written by adults (educational scholars and literary writers) looking back on their experiences growing up in the working classes. The book argues that feeling and valuing are integral to what it means to know. An appendix presents a staff review of one kindergarten student's learning. (Contains 112 references.) (SM)

Abstract

This article examines how reference and information service (RIS) expertise is framed by professional associations in their professional competency documents. Taking a discourse analysis approach, we analyzed how professional associations articulate and frame expertise in RIS competency documents. Three discourse categories were identified: expertise as domain knowledge, expertise as technical knowledge, and expertise as performance. Through these discourses, RIS expertise was transformed into a checklist of behaviors that practitioners are expected to perform and excluded core areas of library and information studies theoretical knowledge, such as theories of information behaviors, from professional practice. Understanding how RIS expertise is framed will provide insights into the role that competency documents play in the professional practices of library and information professionals. 30. Narrative Skills and Literacy Learning.

Abstract

The storytelling narratives produced by four children, namely, two low-income African-American first-graders and two White middle-class first-graders, were examined using a text analysis technique that organizes lines into the groupings referred to as stanzas. The narratives were based on the viewing of a film. Subtle differences were found in the narrative styles of the four children, and complexity and sophistication was evident in all four texts. The results call into question a characterization of either group as representative of an intrinsically more "oral" or more "literate" style of presentation. All of the children produced narratives that were topic-centered, logically organized, and engaging; and all presented information sufficient to derive the basic plot structure of the film, and provided causal explanations for events. However, the findings do point to a more subtle distinction between the two groups of children. If the children are considered to be representative of their respective communities, it may be that children from the different communities bring a different interpretive stance to the storytelling task, or that differences in discourse styles reflect the range of narrative genres the children bring to the classroom. Abstract

Background: The ProtecT trial reported intention-to-treat analysis of men with localised prostate cancer (PCa) randomly allocated to active monitoring (AM), radical prostatectomy, and external beam radiotherapy. Objective: To determine report outcomes according to treatment received in men in randomised and treatment choice cohorts. Design, Setting, and Participants: This study focuses on secondary care. Men with clinically localised prostate cancer at one of nine UK centres were invited to participate in the treatment trial comparing AM, radical prostatectomy, and radiotherapy. Intervention: Two cohorts included 1643 men who agreed to be randomised; 997 declined randomisation and chose treatment. Outcome Measurements and Statistical Analysis: Health-related quality of life impacts on urinary, bowel, and sexual function were assessed using patient-reported outcome measures. Analysis was carried out based on treatment received for each cohort and on pooled estimates using meta-analysis. Differences were estimated with adjustment for known prognostic factors using propensity scores. Results and Limitations: According to treatment received, more men receiving AM died of PCa (AM 1.85%, surgery 0.67%, radiotherapy 0.73%), whilst this difference remained consistent with chance in the randomised cohort (p = 0.08); stronger evidence was found in the exploratory analyses (randomised plus choice cohort) when AM was compared with the combined radical treatment group (p = 0.003). There was also strong evidence that metastasis (AM 5.6%, surgery 2.4%, radiotherapy 2.7%) and disease progression (AM 20.35%, surgery 5.87%, radiotherapy 6.62%) were more common in the AM group. Compared with AM, there were higher risks of sexual dysfunction (95% at 6 mo) and urinary incontinence (55% at 6 mo) after surgery, and of sexual dysfunction (88% at 6 mo) and bowel dysfunction (5% at 6 mo) after radiotherapy. The key limitations are the potential for bias when comparing groups defined by treatment received and outdating of the interventions being evaluated during the lengthy follow-up required in trials of screen-detected PCa. Conclusions: Analyses according to treatment received showed increased rates of disease-related events and lower rates of patient-reported harms in men managed by AM compared with men managed by radical treatment, and stronger evidence of greater PCa mortality in the AM group. Patient Summary: More than 90 out of every 100 men with localised prostate cancer do not die of prostate cancer within 10 yr, irrespective of whether treatment is by means of monitoring, surgery, or radiotherapy. Side effects on sexual and bladder function are much better after active monitoring, but the risks of spreading of prostate cancer are more common.

Abstract

Objectives To present the baseline patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in the Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment (ProtecT) randomized trial comparing active monitoring, radical prostatectomy and external-beam conformal radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer and to compare results with other populations. Materials and Methods A total of 1643 randomized men, aged 50–69 years and diagnosed with clinically localized disease identified by prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, in nine UK cities in the period 1999–2009 were included. Validated PROMs for disease-specific (urinary, bowel and sexual function) and condition-specific impact on quality of life (Expanded Prostate Index Composite [EPIC], 2005 onwards; International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire- Urinary Incontinence [ICIQ-UI], 2001 onwards; the International Continence Society short-form male survey [ICSmaleSF]; anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]), generic mental and physical health (12-item short-form health survey [SF-12]; EuroQol quality-of-life survey, the EQ-5D-3L) were assessed at prostate biopsy clinics before randomization. Descriptive statistics are presented by treatment allocation and by men’s age at biopsy and PSA testing time points for selected measures. Results A total of 1438 participants completed biopsy questionnaires (88%) and 77–88% of these were analysed for individual PROMs. Fewer than 1% of participants were using pads daily (5/ 754). Storage lower urinary tract symptoms were frequent (e.g. nocturia 22%, 312/1423). Bowel symptoms were rare, except for loose stools (16%, 118/754). One third of participants reported erectile dysfunction (241/735) and for 16% (118/731) this was a moderate or large problem. Depression was infrequent (80/1399, 6%) but 20% of participants (278/1403) reported anxiety. Sexual function and bother were markedly worse in older men (65– 70 years), whilst urinary bother and physical health were somewhat worse than in younger men (49–54 years, all P < 0.001). Bowel health, urinary function and depression were unaltered by age, whilst mental health and anxiety were better in older men (P < 0.001). Only minor differences existed in mental or physical health, anxiety and depression between PSA testing and biopsy assessments. Conclusion The ProtecT trial baseline PROMs response rates were high. Symptom frequencies and generic quality of life were similar to those observed in populations screened for prostate cancer and control subjects without cancer.

50. Texts within Texts: A Developmental Study of Children's Play Narratives.

Abstract

A study of children's language use in narratives given during play examined the longitudinal development of different linguistic systems of narrative structure: pronominal, clausal, and temporal. The narrative and dialogue in play with small toy figures was observed in eight children between the ages of 2 and 7. The findings suggest certain developmental ways in which children aged 3-6 mark different strands of text in their narratives. The data suggest that the play narratives of even very young children may consist of an interplay of many voices representing the different perspectives the speaker assumes toward events. This evidence supports the hypothesis that narrative development involves not only the acquisition of various genres such as scripts, personal accounts, and stories, but also involves the mastery in manipulating strands of text within genres.
