- Abstract
Sedimentary fans are key targets of exploration on Mars because they record the history of surface aqueous activity and habitability. The sedimentary fan extending from the Neretva Vallis breach of Jezero crater's western rim is one of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover's main exploration targets. Perseverance spent ∼250 sols exploring and collecting seven rock cores from the lower ∼25 m of sedimentary rock exposed within the fan's eastern scarp, a sequence informally named the “Shenandoah” formation. This study describes the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Shenandoah formation at two areas, “Cape Nukshak” and “Hawksbill Gap,” including a characterization, interpretation, and depositional framework for the facies that comprise it. The five main facies of the Shenandoah formation include: laminated mudstone, laminated sandstone, low-angle cross stratified sandstone, thin-bedded granule sandstone, and thick-bedded granule-pebble sandstone and conglomerate. These facies are organized into three facies associations (FA): FA1, comprised of laminated and soft sediment-deformed sandstone interbedded with broad, unconfined coarser-grained granule and pebbly sandstone intervals; FA2, comprised predominantly of laterally extensive, soft-sediment deformed laminated, sulfate-bearing mudstone with lenses of low-angle cross-stratified and scoured sandstone; and FA3, comprised of dipping planar, thin-bedded sand-gravel couplets. The depositional model favored for the Shenandoah formation involves the transition from a sand-dominated distal alluvial fan setting (FA1) to a stable, widespread saline lake (FA2), followed by the progradation of a river delta system (FA3) into the lake basin. This sequence records the initiation of a relatively long-lived, habitable lacustrine and deltaic environment within Jezero crater.

This contribution reviews microbial microfacies recognisable in vertical sections through modern or fossil matovergrown sediment. Microfacies are products of endobenthic or epibenthic microbial mats interacting with sediment dynamics. Laminae of such mats form during sediment dynamic quiescence by organisation of filaments to an interwoven mat fabrics (binding), and biomass enrichment (growth) by cell replication and the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Vertical sections through mat-covered sediment may show buried stacks of subrecent mat laminae (biolaminites) that rose from alternating periods of mat development and sediment deposition. Mat laminae that drape ripple marks are visible as sinoidal structures in sediment core or sections. If the sediment-stabilising properties of a microbial mat is overcome by currents or waves of high strengths, cmsize mat fragments (mat chips and roll-ups) are ripped off and redeposited. Intrasedimenary gases, trapped beneath mat layers, may cause a high secondary porosity (sponge pore sand) in the sandy substrates. The internal build-up (microfabrics) of mat laminae is investigated under high magnification. Endobenthic microbial mat fabrics include filamentous and coccoid cells forming a network, EPS, and sedimentary grains. The grains derived from interaction of the endobenthic mats with bed load. Epibenthic microbial mat fabrics may include also silt-size particles syndepositionally enriched by baffling and trapping of suspension load. The fabrics of these mats commonly also include oriented sedimentary grains. These grains (now aligned bedding parallel) were dragged upward from the substrate during the development and growth of the mat. Overall, microbial microfacies provide insight into the sedimentation pattern of the (paleo-)environment and into the types of the substrate-colonising microbial mats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; The geological units on the floor of Jezero crater, Mars, are part of a wider regional stratigraphy of olivine-rich rocks, which extends well beyond the crater. We investigate the petrology of olivine and carbonate-bearing rocks of the Séítah formation in the floor of Jezero. Using multispectral images and x-ray fluorescence data, acquired by the Perseverance rover, we performed a petrographic analysis of the Bastide and Brac outcrops within this unit. We find that these outcrops are composed of igneous rock, moderately altered by aqueous fluid. The igneous rocks are mainly made of coarse-grained olivine, similar to some Martian meteorites. We interpret them as an olivine cumulate, formed by settling and enrichment of olivine through multi-stage cooling of a thick magma body.

- Abstract
The first samples collected by the Mars 2020 mission represent units exposed on the Jezero Crater floor, from the potentially oldest Séítah formation outcrops to the potentially youngest rocks of the heavily cratered Máaz formation. Surface investigations reveal landscape-to-microscopic textural, mineralogical, and geochemical evidence for igneous lithologies, some possibly emplaced as lava flows. The samples contain major rock-forming minerals such as pyroxene, olivine, and feldspar, accessory minerals including oxides and phosphates, and evidence for various degrees of aqueous activity in the form of water-soluble salt, carbonate, sulfate, iron oxide, and iron silicate minerals. Following sample return, the compositions and ages of these variably altered igneous rocks are expected to reveal the geophysical and geochemical nature of the planet’s interior at the time of emplacement, characterize martian magmatism, and place timing constraints on geologic processes, both in Jezero Crater and more widely on Mars. Petrographic observations and geochemical analyses, coupled with geochronology of secondary minerals, can also reveal the timing of aqueous activity as well as constrain the chemical and physical conditions of the environments in which these minerals precipitated, and the nature and composition of organic compounds preserved in association with these phases. Returned samples from these units will help constrain the crater chronology of Mars and the global evolution of the planet’s interior, for understanding the processes that formed Jezero Crater floor units, and for constraining the style and duration of aqueous activity in Jezero Crater, past habitability, and cycling of organic elements in Jezero Crater.

International audience; Orbital and rover observations of relictgeomorphic features and stratigraphic architectures indicate Mars once had a warmer, wetter climate. Constraining the character, relative timing and persistence of ancient aqueous activity on Mars is possible through detailed interrogation of the stratal geometry of aqueously deposited sedimentary bodies. Such analyses inform interpretations of Martian climate evolution, potential habitability, and search strategies for rocks that might contain potential biosignatures. A prominent sedimentary fan deposit at the westernmargin of Jezero crater has been inferred to be a river delta that built into an ancient lake basin during the Late Noachian-Early Hesperian epochs on Mars (~3.6-3.8 Ga) [1, 2, 3]. The Perseverance rover landed on 18 February 2021 ~2.2 km from the western fan. During the early phase of mission investigations, highresolution images obtained from the Mastcam-Z camera and from the Remote Micro-Imager of the SuperCaminstrument provided the first ground-based observations of the western fan and an associated remnant outcrop, named Kodiak. Here, we report its sedimentology, which provide new constraints on the nature of the fan deposits, and their paleoenvironmental implications (4).

International audience; The Perseverance rover landed on the floor of Jezero crater on 18 February 2021. The landing site, named “Octavia E. Butler” is located ~2.2 km from the SE-facing erosional scarp of the western fan deposits, which are of strong interest for the mission [1-2]. Images obtained using the Mastcam-Z camera and the Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) of the SuperCam instrument provided the first Mars ground-based observations of this western fan (Fig. 1). At the distance images were taken, the RMI images offer a pixel resolution of 2.2 cm, thus enabling identification of objects of typically 7-8 cm (3-4 pixels). Observations of the residual butte Kodiak confirmed the presence of a lake within Jezero crater, but also showed that the lake deduced from the deltaic architecture at Kodiak had a level ~100 m lower than expected (-2495/-2500 m), and was thus a closed system for a significant period [3]. In addition, the coarser deposits (boulder conglomerates and pebbly sandstones) observed near the top of all of the scarps are typical of fluvial floods with high energy, reflecting a change in hydrology of the fluvial system. Here, we focus on the hydrological characteristics of fluvial deposits observed within the scarps of the delta, both as topsets and as boulder conglomerates.

- Abstract
The Mars 2020 rover landed at Jezero crater on February 18, 2021. Since then, the rover has traveled around the “Séítah” region and has collected data from the Mastcam-Z, Supercam, PIXL and SHERLOC instruments that has led to insights into the formation of the olivine-clay-carbonate bearing rocks that were identified from orbit. Here we discuss three questions: 1) What have we learned about the olivine-clay- carbonate unit? 2) What terrestrial analogs exist for the unit? 3) Why do the rocks have a thinly layered morphology? We shall briefly mention instrumental measurements which provide important information regarding the olivine bearing rock at Seitah.

- Abstract
The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, Mars, to investigate ancient lake and river deposits. We report observations of the crater floor, below the crater’s sedimentary delta, finding the floor consists of igneous rocks altered by water. The lowest exposed unit, informally named Séítah, is a coarsely crystalline olivine-rich rock, which accumulated at the base of a magma body. Fe-Mg carbonates along grain boundaries indicate reactions with CO2-rich water, under water-poor conditions. Overlying Séítah is a unit informally named Máaz, which we interpret as lava flows or the chemical complement to Séítah in a layered igneous body. Voids in these rocks contain sulfates and perchlorates, likely introduced by later near-surface brine evaporation. Core samples of these rocks were stored aboard Perseverance for potential return to Earth.

Life is the outcome of a complex network of chemical reactions and molecular interactions that emerged on Earth once primitive chemical automata could self-assemble in such a way that enabled them to self-reproduce and evolve. Yet exactly how, where and when life first ap-peared on our planet remain unknown. Various lines of evidence from traces of early life preserved in the geological record provide fundamental though rudimentary insight into life’s origins, since the oldest fossils rec-ord the nature of life more than half a billion years after it emerged on Earth. In spite of the chemical enigmas of the earliest life and its limited record, characterization of the various classes of biosignatures indicative of life in a geological context provides some guidance as to the nature of the earliest habitats and may aid those seeking to reveal the secrets of life’s origins.

- Abstract
Paleoarchean stromatolites are among the oldest compelling evidence for life. We present advanced two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) reconstructions of the morphology, mineralogy, trace element geochemistry, and taphonomy of permineralized stromatolites from the lowermost horizons of the ca. 3.5 Ga Dresser Formation, Pilbara, Western Australia. Rare earth element plus yttrium compositions suggest a restricted paleodepositional setting influenced by marine influxes; this contrasts with other Dresser stromatolites, which developed around terrestrial hot springs. Mineral phase relationships and positive Eu anomalies denote syndepositional hydrothermal influence and silicification promoting high-fidelity microstructural preservation. Although no primary kerogen is preserved, numerous 2-D and 3-D morphological characteristics denote a biogenic origin, including the onlap of sedimentary layers onto stromatolitic topography, fine-scale undulatory laminations, non-isopachous laminations with crestal thickening, laminoid fenestrae, and subvertical pillar-like fabrics interpreted as microbial palisade structure; these features suggest that the stromatolite ecosystem was dominantly phototrophic. The deep iron-rich weathering profile of the Dresser stromatolites makes them pertinent analogues for potential microbialites in altered carbonates on Mars. Were similar putative biogenic macro-, meso- and micromorphologies identified in habitable Martian settings by rover imaging systems, such materials would be compelling targets for sample return. - Abstract
Observations from orbital spacecraft have shown that Jezero crater, Mars, contains a prominent fan-shaped body of sedimentary rock deposited at its western margin. The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater in February 2021. We analyze images taken by the rover in the three months after landing. The fan has outcrop faces that were invisible from orbit, which record the hydrological evolution of Jezero crater. We interpret the presence of inclined strata in these outcrops as evidence of deltas that advanced into a lake. In contrast, the uppermost fan strata are composed of boulder conglomerates, which imply deposition by episodic high-energy floods. This sedimentary succession indicates a transition, from a sustained hydrologic activity in a persistent lake environment, to highly energetic short-duration fluvial flows.

- Abstract
A central objective of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is to collect and document a suite of scientifically compelling samples for possible return to Earth by a subsequent mission [1]. Strategic planning by the Mars 2020 Science Team has thus far identified a set of notional sample caches. These arose from integrating the testable hypotheses that could be addressed by Mars 2020 within the framework of the geology of Jezero crater and its surroundings [2], identifying specific locations of high scientific interest by analysis of remotely sensed data, and traversability considerations [1]. Here we describe the general characteristics of the identified notional caches and compare them to the types of samples previously prioritized by the wider Mars science community [3]. While strategic planning will guide and streamline the decision-making processes once the rover lands at Jezero crater, the actual samples collected will depend on the landing location, the traverse taken, and decisions made by the Mars 2020 Science Team.

Raman spectroscopy, carbonaceous material, Archaean, Early Life, Barberton greenstone belt ,[CHIM]Chemical Sciences - Abstract
International audience; Raman spectroscopy is a molecule-specific technique allowing the investigation of the chemical structure of organic and inorganic geological materials. Since this is a non-destructive and relatively non-invasive analytical procedure, Raman spectroscopy is ideally suited to palaeontology. Raman spectroscopy is herein applied to the study of carbonaceous chert facies of the ~3.4 Ga old Buck Reef Chert of South Africa, which contain some of the oldest well-preserved evidence of early life. Laminated chert typically consists of microbands composed of microcrystalline quartz (chert) and an association of siderite and carbonaceous material (CM) in the form of mat-like laminations, simple carbonaceous grains, vein infills and diffuse CM. Using Raman spectroscopy the structural characteristics of CM in mat-rich chert have been investigated and compared with grains of CM from the same unit, but wich were deposited as massive layers that bear no evidence of microbial influence. All CM retains a structural organisation consistent with a lower greenschist grade regional metamorphic imprint, however, this detailed study of the CM Raman signals revealed some heterogeneity between the different sedimentary facies, thus pointing to the presence of different CM types. Different CM precursors are indicated and may reflect either different CM sources or different alteration chemistries from various microbial metabolic pathways.
