Quantum computers must achieve large-scale, fault-tolerant operation to deliver on their promise of transformational processing power [1-4]. This will require thousands or millions of high-fidelity quantum gates and similar numbers of qubits [5]. Demonstrations using neutral-atom qubits trapped and manipulated by lasers have shown that this modality can provide high two-qubit gate (CZ) fidelities and scalable operation [6-10]. However, the gates in these demonstrations are driven by lasers that do not resolve individual qubits, with universal computation enabled by physical mid-circuit shuttling of the qubits. This relatively slow operation will greatly extend runtimes for useful, large-scale computation. Here we demonstrate a universal neutral-atom quantum computer with gate rates limited by optical switching times, rather than shuttling, by individually addressing tightly focused laser beams at an array of single atoms. We achieve CZ fidelity of 99.35(4)% and local single qubit RZ gate fidelity of 99.902(8)%. Moreover, we demonstrate non-destructive readout of alkali-atom qubits with sub-percent loss, which boosts operational speed. This technique also enables us to measure 99.73(3)% CZ fidelity with atom-loss events excluded, which is a record among long lived neutral-atom qubits and highlights the path to higher fidelity and error correction. Our results represent a critical step towards large-scale, fault-tolerant neutral-atom quantum computers that can execute computations on practical timescales.

The problem of high-speed transport for cold atoms with minimal heating has received considerable attention in theory and experiment. Much theoretical work has focused on solutions of general problems, often assuming a harmonic trapping potential or a 1D geometry. However in the case of optical conveyor belts these assumptions are not always valid. Here we present experimental and numerical studies of the effects of various motional parameters on heating and retention of atoms transported in an optical conveyor. Our numerical model is specialized to the geometry of a moving optical lattice and uses dephasing in the density matrix formalism to account for effects of motion in the transverse plane. We verify the model by a comparison with experimental measurements, and use it to gain further insight into the relationship between the conveyor's performance and the various parameters of the system., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, references corrected

We theoretically investigate an ensemble of three-level room-temperature atoms in a two-mode optical cavity, focusing on the case of counterpropagating light fields. We find that in the limit of large detunings the problem admits relatively simple and intuitive solutions. When a classical field drives one of the transitions, the system becomes equivalent to an ensemble of two-level atoms with suppressed Doppler broadening. In contrast, when the same transition is driven with a single photon, the system collectively behaves like a single two-level atom. Metastable states of noble gas atoms are typically produced by electrical discharge techniques or "all-optical" excitation methods. Here we combine electrical discharges with optical pumping to demonstrate "optically enhanced" production of metastable xenon (Xe*). We experimentally measure large increases in Xe* density with relatively small optical control field powers. We describe a fiber ring resonator comprised of a relatively long loop of standard single-mode fiber with a short nanofiber segment. The evanescent mode of the nanofiber segment allows the cavity-enhanced field to interact with atoms in close proximity to the nanofiber surface. We report on an experiment using a warm atomic vapor and low-finesse cavity, and briefly discuss the potential for reaching the strong coupling regime of cavity QED by using trapped atoms and a high-finesse cavity of this kind., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Weak single-photon nonlinearities have many potential applications in quantum computing and quantum information. Here we demonstrate a relatively simple system for producing low-power cross-phase modulation using metastable xenon inside a high finesse cavity. The use of a noble gas such as xenon eliminates the contamination of the high-finesse mirrors that can occur when using alkali metal vapors such as rubidium. Cross-phase shifts of 5 mrad with 4.5 fJ control pulses were demonstrated. Numerical solutions of the master equation are in good agreement with the experimental results, and they predict that cross-phase shifts greater than 1 mrad per control photon should be achievable by reducing the size of the cavity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Strong saturated absorption at nanowatt power levels has been demonstrated using metastable xenon in a high-finesse optical cavity. The use of metastable xenon allows a high quality factor of Q=2*10^8 to be achieved at relatively high atomic densities without any contamination or damage to the optical surfaces, which is often a problem when using high-density rubidium or other alkali atoms. This technique provides a relatively straightforward way to produce nonlinearities at the single-photon level with possible applications in quantum communications and computing., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level has a wide variety of fundamental applications in quantum optics including the generation of macroscopic entangled states. Here we describe a practical method for producing a weak cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level using metastable xenon in a high finesse cavity. We estimate the achievable phase shift and give a brief update on the experimental progress towards its realization. A single-photon cross-phase modulation of approximately 20 milliradians is predicted by both a straightforward perturbation theory calculation and a numerical matrix diagonalization method., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We provide analytical composite pulse sequences that perform dynamical decoupling concurrently with arbitrary rotations for a qubit coded in the spin state of a triple quantum dot. The sequences are designed to respect realistic experimental constraints such as strictly nonnegative couplings. Logical errors and leakage errors are simultaneously corrected. A short pulse sequence is presented to compensate nuclear noise and a longer sequence is presented to simultaneously compensate nuclear and charge noise.
