The dielectric constant is a critical parameter in many energy-related applications. Typically, increasing the dielectric constant of soft materials involves adding high dielectric constant polar liquids or inorganic fillers, but there are limitations to this approach due to safety concerns with volatile and flammable solvents and the agglomeration of inorganic fillers. An alternative approach is to add zwitterionic liquids that exhibit exceptionally high dielectric constants with negligible volatility. Here, we report the synthesis of a series of zwitterionic liquids containing an imidazolium cation, exhibiting the highest dielectric constant among all organic molecules (∼350 at 293 K). The cation–anion linkage was tailored in a wide range between three and nine carbons, rendering the zwitterion dipole from 25 to 52 D. Comparing the dielectric constant for zwitterions with different anions (i.e., sulfonylimide, sulfonate, and carboxylate) reveals the beneficial impacts of the delocalized sulfonylimide anion vs the carboxylate anion due to the enlarged molecular dipole and more homogenous liquid morphology. Molecular dipole and liquid morphology are identified as the keys to developing high dielectric constant zwitterionic liquids. The extremely high dielectric constant accessible with the proposed molecular design paves new avenues for developing high dielectric constant zwitterions that act as dielectricizers. Single ion conducting gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are characterized as having a certain amount of ionic liquid or solvent incorporated into a single ion-conducting polymer matrix and may afford the advantages of high conductivity and low electrolyte polarization under battery operation. Single ion conducting polymers often suffer from low conductivity due to their reliance on polymer segmental motion to achieve sufficient ion mobility. However, by incorporating specific solvents into a single ion conducting matrix, mobility of the polymer can be enhanced while still maintaining the advantages of single ion conduction. Although many of the solvents used to swell GPEs are mixtures of flammable organic solvents (such as dimethyl carbonate), there are many potential non-reactive, low vapor pressure solvents that could effectively solvate alkali-ion based GPEs and plasticize the polymer matrix to enhance ion conductivity. Adipate-based solvents are a group of non-volatile plasticizers with low viscosities and low vapor pressures at room temperature derived from adipic acid. The ester groups in these solvents may effectively solvate alkali ions such as Na+, leading to higher conductivity, while circumventing issues of flammability found in current alkali-ion conducting electrolytes. This study investigates the properties of sodium-ion conducting GPEs that have been swollen with varying adipate-based solvents and the subsequent dielectric response from the solvent addition. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy was used to characterize the Na+ conductivity, static dielectric constant, ion-conducting content, and mobility of the membranes before and after the non-volatile solvent uptake. Materials with high dielectric constant, εs, are desirable in a wide range of applications including energy storage and actuators. Recently, zwitterionic liquids have been reported to have the largest εs of any liquid and, thus, have the potential to replace inorganic fillers to modulate the material εs. Although the large εs for zwitterionic liquids is attributed to their large molecular dipole, the role of chemical substituents attached to the zwitterion cation on εs is not fully understood, which is necessary to enhance the performance of soft energy materials. Here, we report the impact of zwitterionic liquid cation chemical substituents on εs (50 < εs < 300 at room temperature). Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy reveals that molecular reorientation is the main contributor to the high εs. The low Kirkwood factor g calculated for zwitterionic liquids (e.g., 0.1–0.2) suggests the tendency for the antiparallel zwitterion dipole alignment expected from the strong electrostatic intermolecular interactions. With octyl cation substituents, the g is decreased due to the formation of hydrophobic-rich domains that restrict molecular reorientation under applied electric fields. In contrast, when zwitterion cations are functionalized with ethylene oxide (EO) segments, g increases due to the EO segments interacting with the cations, allowing more zwitterion rotation in response to the applied field. The reported results suggest that high εs zwitterionic liquids require a large molecular dipole, compositionally homogeneous liquids (e.g., no aggregation), a maximized zwitterion number density, and a high g, which is achievable by incorporating polar chemical substituents onto the zwitterion cations. Control of nanoparticle dispersion within a polymer matrix is a critical consideration when designing solid state hybrid polymer/inorganic nanoparticle materials. Polymer-functionalized nanoparticles are effective hybrid components for increasing particle miscibility in polymer matrices. Entropic and enthalpic contributions to the dispersion state of polymer-functionalized nanoparticles are well-understood and have been used extensively to enhance nanoparticle miscibility in polymer matrices. However, systems of immiscible graft and matrix chains remain understudied, in part due to the challenges associated with mixing unlike components. Here, a new method for stabilizing polymer-functionalized nanoparticles in an immiscible matrix is reported. Poly(cyclooctadiene) (PCOD) functionalized nanoparticles are dispersed within poly(styrene) and poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices by an in situ polymerization and polymer grafting process in which polymer-grafted nanoparticles are initially well-solubilized in a monomer solution prior to monomer polymerization. The in situ polymerization arrests particle mobility as the matrix increases in chain length, and thermodynamic penalties to mixing are reduced by the in situ grafting of matrix chains from the PCOD segments on the nanoparticle surfaces. This method adapts commercially relevant free-radical polymerization processes for the development of well-dispersed hybrid polymer/inorganic nanoparticle materials. The reported method is a potential avenue to improve particle dispersion needed for solid state material reinforcement without relying on miscible particle and polymer components. Maximizing ion conduction in single-ion-conducting ionomers is essential for their application in energy-related technologies such as Li-ion batteries. Understanding the anion chemical composition impacts on ion conduction offers new perspectives to maximize ion transport, since the current approach of lowering Tg has apparently reached a limit (lowest Tg B 190 K, highest conductivity B10-5-10-4 S cm-1). Here, a series of random ionomers are synthesized by copolymerizing poly(ethylene glycol)methacrylate with either sulfonylimide lithium methacrylate (MTLi) or sulfonate lithium methacrylate (MSLi) using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Li-Ion conduction and self-diffusion coefficients (DLi+) of the ionomers are characterized with dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and pulsed-field-gradient (PFG) NMR diffusometry, respectively. Increasing ion content decreases the Li-ion conductivity and DLi+, as expected from the increased Tg. Moreover, a considerably lower ionic conductivity and DLi+ are observed for MSLi compared to MTLi at constant ion content and Tg/T. As revealed from X-ray scattering, strong ion aggregation in MSLi results in much lower conductivity and DLi+ compared with less aggregated MTLi based on the more delocalized sulfonylimide anion. These results emphasize the detrimental and molecularly specific role of ion aggregation in Li-ion conductivity, and highlight the necessity for minimizing ion aggregation via the rational choice of anion chemical composition.
