Aims: The role of gut microbiota in the management of diabetes is shown. In this randomized clinical trial we assessed the effects of synbiotic supplementation on insulin, lipid profile and antioxidative status among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).Methods: Ninety pregnant women with GDM were randomly assigned into two groups to receive either a daily synbiotic capsule - consisting of L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. fermentum, L. gasseri (1.5-7.0 × 109-10 CFU/g) - with fructooligosaccharide (38.5 mg), or placebo for 6 weeks. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), high- and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DSP) were assessed before and after the intervention.Results: No significant changes in FPG, insulin resistance/sensitivity, lipid profile and TAC indices were seen in synbiotic group compared to the placebo one (p > 0.05). Significant within group increases for HDL-C and TAC levels in synbiotic group were observed (p < 0.05). LDL-C showed significant increment in the placebo group compared to the baseline of the study (6.9 mg/dL, p < 0.05). Between group comparison showed significant decrease in SBP and DBP in synbiotic group compared to placebo (-2.5 vs. 8.6 mmHg, and -1.8 vs. 2.1 mmHg, p < 0.05).Conclusions: The results showed that, in women with GDM, synbiotic supplementation had no effect on FPG and insulin resistance/sensitivity indices. Lipid profile and TAC status may be affected by synbiotic supplementation. Synbiotic is effective in reducing of blood pressure in women with GDM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our aim was to develop a framework-based weight control behavior questionnaire (Weight-CuRB) and test its psychometric properties among a non-probability sample of 240 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Appropriate validity, simplicity, functionality and reliability were observed for the Weight-CuRB. The explanatory model fits the data well (χ2 [139] = 245.835, p <.001, CFI = 0.950, NFI = 0.901, IFI = 0.950, RMSEA = 0.057[(0.045–0.068]). To our knowledge, this was the first study to develop and validate a framework-based instrument aiming at cognitive needs assessment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major public health problem worldwide. Hypertension and inflammation are well recognized as risk factors for the macrovascular complications of diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of vitamin E supplementation on blood pressure (BP), serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and fasting blood glucose in patients with T2DM. Methods: In a double blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial, 83 patients with T2DM were divided randomly into two groups of vitamin E (400 mg/d, n=42) and placebo (n=41). All patients received the pearls for 8 weeks. Baseline and eighth week BP, serum hs-CRP, fasting blood glucose, anthropometric and dietary intake data were obtained from each patient. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 11.5. Results: Vitamin E supplementation significantly increased serum levels of vitamin E (P < 0.001) and decreased mean arterial pressure and fasting blood glucose (P = 0.047, P = 0.028, respectively) in vitamin E group as compared with placebo group. A significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure was observed in the vitamin E group comparing with baseline values (all P < 0.01). There were no significant changes in serum hs-CRP in both of the studied groups. Conclusion: Vitamin E had beneficial effects on serum vitamin E, BP and blood glucose in patients with T2DM. Improvement in BP and glucose control may contribute to reducing complications of diabetes including cardiovascular risk in these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
