1. Mode identification and ensemble asteroseismology of 164 \beta Cep stars discovered from Gaia light curves and monitored by TESS

Abstract

The Gaia mission discovered many new candidate \beta Cephei (\beta Cep) pulsators, which are meanwhile confirmed from TESS space photometry. We aim to analyse all currently available TESS data for these \beta Cep pulsators, of which 145 were new discoveries, in order to exploit their asteroseismic potential. \beta Cep stars belong to an under-represented class of pulsators in the current space photometry revolution while being of critical importance to improve evolution models of massive stars. We extracted light curves for 216 star from the TESS full-frame images and performed pre-whitening. Based on Gaia DR3, we deduced stellar properties and compared them to those of known \beta Cep stars. We developed a methodology to identify the dominant pulsation modes of the \beta Cep stars from Gaia and TESS amplitude ratios and from the detection of rotationally-split multiplets. We used grid modelling to gain insights into the population of \beta Cep stars. With the combination of TESS and Gaia, we successfully identified the mode degrees for 176 stars. of which the majority are dipole non-radial modes. Many non-radial modes show splittings in their TESS frequency spectra allowing us to assemble a large set of split multiplets in \beta Cep stars and to calculate their envelope rotation, spin parameter, and the level of differential envelope-to-surface rotation. For the latter, we find an upper limit of 4, with most stars rotating almost rigidly. We also provide the asymmetries of the multiplets. Based on grid modelling, we provide mass, convective core mass, and ages for 164 stars. By combining Gaia and TESS, we enable asteroseismology of \beta Cep stars as a population. Our study prepares for future detailed modelling based on individual frequencies of identified modes leading towards a better understanding of these massive pulsators, as crucial probes of stellar evolution theory. Abstract

We report the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae discovery of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-23bd (AT 2023clx) in NGC 3799, a LINER galaxy with no evidence of strong AGN activity over the past decade. With a redshift of $z = 0.01107$ and a peak UV/optical luminosity of $(5.4\pm0.4)\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, ASASSN-23bd is the lowest-redshift and least-luminous TDE discovered to date. Spectroscopically, ASASSN-23bd shows H$\alpha$ and He I emission throughout its spectral time series, and the UV spectrum shows nitrogen lines without the strong carbon and magnesium lines typically seen for AGN. Fits to the rising ASAS-SN light curve show that ASASSN-23bd started to brighten on MJD 59988$^{+1}_{-1}$, $\sim$9 days before discovery, with a nearly linear rise in flux, peaking in the $g$ band on MJD $60000^{+3}_{-3}$. Scaling relations and TDE light curve modelling find a black hole mass of $\sim$10$^6$ $M_\odot$, which is on the lower end of supermassive black hole masses. ASASSN-23bd is a dim X-ray source, with an upper limit of $L_{0.3-10\,\mathrm{keV}} < 1.0\times10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$ from stacking all \emph{Swift} observations prior to MJD 60061, but with soft ($\sim 0.1$ keV) thermal emission with a luminosity of $L_{0.3-2 \,\mathrm{keV}}\sim4\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in \emph{XMM-Newton} observations on MJD 60095. The rapid $(t < 15$ days) light curve rise, low UV/optical luminosity, and a luminosity decline over 40 days of $\Delta L_{40}\approx-0.7$ make ASASSN-23bd one of the dimmest TDEs to date and a member of the growing ``Low Luminosity and Fast'' class of TDEs., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

We present the results of a systematic search of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) 2-min cadence data for new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars observed during the Cycle 2 phase of its mission. We find seven new roAp stars previously unreported as such and present the analysis of a further 25 roAp stars that are already known. Three of the new stars show multiperiodic pulsations, while all new members are rotationally variable stars, leading to almost 70 per cent (22) of the roAp stars presented being $\alpha^2$ CVn-type variable stars. We show that targeted observations of known chemically peculiar stars are likely to overlook many new roAp stars, and demonstrate that multi-epoch observations are necessary to see pulsational behaviour changes. We find a lack of roAp stars close to the blue edge of the theoretical roAp instability strip, and reaffirm that mode instability is observed more frequently with precise, space-based observations. In addition to the Cycle 2 observations, we analyse TESS data for all known roAp stars. This amounts to 18 further roAp stars observed by TESS. Finally, we list six known roAp stars that TESS is yet to observe. We deduce that the incidence of roAp stars amongst the Ap star population is just 5.5 per cent, raising fundamental questions about the conditions required to excite pulsations in Ap stars. Abstract

The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) began observing in late-2011 and has been imaging the entire sky with nightly cadence since late 2017. A core goal of ASAS-SN is to release as much useful data as possible to the community. Working towards this goal, in 2017 the first ASAS-SN Sky Patrol was established as a tool for the community to obtain light curves from our data with no preselection of targets. Then, in 2020 we released static V-band photometry from 2013--2018 for 61 million sources. Here we describe the next generation ASAS-SN Sky Patrol, Version 2.0, which represents a major progression of this effort. Sky Patrol 2.0 provides continuously updated light curves for 111 million targets derived from numerous external catalogs of stars, galaxies, and solar system objects. We are generally able to serve photometry data within an hour of observation. Moreover, with a novel database architecture, the catalogs and light curves can be queried at unparalleled speed, returning thousands of light curves within seconds. Light curves can be accessed through a web interface (http://asas-sn.ifa.hawaii.edu/skypatrol/) or a Python client (https://asas-sn.ifa.hawaii.edu/documentation). The Python client can be used to retrieve up to 1 million light curves, generally limited only by bandwidth. This paper gives an updated overview of our survey, introduces the new Sky Patrol, and describes its system architecture. Abstract

We present the results of a systematic search for new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars using the 2-min cadence data collected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during its Cycle 1 observations. We identify 12 new roAp stars. Amongst these stars we discover the roAp star with the longest pulsation period, another with the shortest rotation period, and six with multiperiodic variability. In addition to these new roAp stars, we present an analysis of 44 known roAp stars observed by TESS during Cycle 1, providing the first high-precision and homogeneous sample of a significant fraction of the known roAp stars. The TESS observations have shown that almost 60 per cent (33) of our sample of stars are multiperiodic, providing excellent cases to test models of roAp pulsations, and from which the most rewarding asteroseismic results can be gleaned. We report four cases of the occurrence of rotationally split frequency multiplets that imply different mode geometries for the same degree modes in the same star. This provides a conundrum in applying the oblique pulsator model to the roAp stars. Finally, we report the discovery of non-linear mode interactions in $\alpha$ Cir (TIC 402546736, HD 128898) around the harmonic of the principal mode -- this is only the second case of such a phenomenon., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 38 Pages, 50 Figures, 1 Table, 2 Appendices

Abstract

We present the first results from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) on the rotational and pulsational variability of magnetic chemically peculiar A-type stars. We analyse TESS 2-min cadence data from sectors 1 and 2 on a sample of 83 stars. Five new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars are announced. One of these pulsates with periods around 4.7 min, making it the shortest period roAp star known to date. Four out of the five new roAp stars are multiperiodic. Three of these, and the singly-periodic one show the presence of rotational mode splitting. Individual frequencies are provided in all cases. In addition, seven previously known roAp stars are analysed. Additional modes of oscillation are found in some stars, while in others we are able to distinguish the true pulsations from possible aliases present in the ground-based data. We find that the pulsation amplitude in the TESS filter is typically a factor 6 smaller than that in the $B$ filter which is usually used for ground-based observations. For four roAp stars we set constraints on the inclination angle and magnetic obliquity, through the application of the oblique pulsator model. We also confirm the absence of roAp-type pulsations down to amplitude limits of 6 and 13 micromag, respectively, in two of the best characterised non-oscillating Ap (noAp) stars. We announce 27 new rotational variables along with their rotation periods, and provide different rotation periods for seven other stars. 8. The malady lingers on : the abject and contemporary Asian horror cinema

Abstract

The aim of this study is to bring together abjection theory, as elaborated in Julia Kristeva's Powers of Horror and other relevant works (particularly, the establishment of "symbolic" and "semiotic" realms), with contemporary Asian horror cinema, in order to construct a detailed and effective framework for the application of abjection theory within film studies. Examining various aspects of abjection theory (purging rituals; rites of passage; the construct and collapse of borders; the impingement of the past upon the present; and the monstrous-feminine) alongside the major themes of contemporary Asian horror cinema (the vengeful spirit; the generation of fear through modern technologies; myth, cult, and urban legend; and horror within the high school and the home), this thesis first reconciles diverse and complex bodies of critical and theoretical literature, before applying this data to a series of case studies spread over six chapters (each dealing with a different theme of abjection theory and/or prevalent motifs in the films), analysing twenty-six contemporary Asian horror films from across Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Challenging existing models of application and a selection of key readings in this field, I propose that combining theory and film does not yield a conservative outlook, as some previous studies argue (in particular, Barbara Creed, 1993). Instead, I demonstrate the importance of applied theory to this relatively new area of cinema in a study that establishes radical elements within the texts through the illustration of abjection as both a subjective psychological experience and a chaotic force, challenging the arbitrary borders erected to establish normative symbolic subjectivity. The introduction of the abject element within the films' narratives of abjection highlights the fragile nature of ordered symbolic society, and the abject's lasting presence strongly indicates the precipice upon which symbolic authority balances.

Abstract

The metallic-line (Am) stars are chemically peculiar A and early F stars that show weak spectral lines of Ca K and Sc and strong iron-group features compared to their hydrogen-line spectral type. The abundance peculiarities of Am stars can be explained by chemical separation due to radiative diffusion and gravitational settling. In a normal A star this separation is destroyed by fast rotation, however Am stars rotate slowly enough to prevent this mechanism. The metallic-line stars are located in the classical instability zone, where pulsating Delta Scuti stars lie. The Delta Scuti pulsations are driven by the kappa-mechanism operating in the He II ionisation zone. For many years it was assumed that classical Am stars cannot pulsate due to the gravitational settling of helium. However, over time it appeared that many Am stars pulsate. We present the first results from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) on the ro- tational and pulsational variability of magnetic chemically peculiar A-type stars. We analyse TESS 2-min cadence data from sectors 1 and 2 on a sample of 83 stars. Five new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars are announced. One of these pulsates with periods around 4.7 min, making it the shortest period roAp star known to date. Four out of the five new roAp stars are multiperiodic. Three of these, and the singly-periodic one show the presence of rotational mode splitting. Individual frequencies are provided in all cases. In addition, seven previously known roAp stars are analysed. Additional modes of oscillation are found in some stars, while in others we are able to distinguish the true pulsations from possible aliases present in the ground-based data. We find that the pulsation amplitude in the TESS filter is typically a factor 6 smaller than that in the B filter which is usually used for ground-based observations. For four roAp stars we set constraints on the inclination angle and magnetic obliquity, through the application of the oblique pulsator model. We also confirm the absence of roAp-type pulsa- tions down to amplitude limits of 6 and 13 µmag, respectively, in two of the best characterised non-oscillating Ap (noAp) stars. We announce 27 new rotational variables along with their ro- tation periods, and provide different rotation periods for seven other stars. Finally, we discuss how these results challenge state-of-the-art pulsation models for roAp stars.

These measurements provide new insights into collisional and indirect line formation processes, identifications of forbidden lines, and a new plasma line diagnostic of magnetic field strength.

Abstract

The interaction of ultrahigh power picosecond laser pulses with solid targets is of interest both for benchmarking the results of hybrid particle in cell codes and also for applications in reentrant cone guided fast ignition. We describe the construction of novel targets in which copper/titanium wires are formed into 'nail-like' objects by a process of melting and micromachining so that energy can be reliably coupled to a 24-[micro]m-diameter wire. An extreme-ultraviolet image of the interaction of the Titan laser with such a target is shown. Abstract

A team of University of Alberta researchers, in collaboration with an international team of investigators, has spearheaded an experiment to study the generation and transport of MeV electrons produced by ultra-high intensity second harmonic Nd:Glass laser pulses. Intensities of up to 5 x I O’ 9 W cm2 have been used to irradiate a variety of targets to investigate the conversion efficiency into MeV energy electrons, as well as the energy spectrum and angular divergence of such electrons. Their transport through a cone tip simulating the generation of an energetic electron beam for the fast ignition of a laser-compressed fuel core was also measured. The experiments were carried out at the Titan high intensity 1aser facility located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The experiment is the first step towards evaluating the potential effectiveness of using prepulse-free shorter wavelength second harmonic laser pulses as ignition sources for Fast Ignition Fusion Energy.

Abstract

Kα x-ray emission, extreme ultraviolet emission, and plasma imaging techniques have been used to diagnose energy transport patterns in copper foils ranging in thickness from 5 to 75μm for intensities up to 5×1020Wcm-2. The Kα emission and shadowgrams both indicate a larger divergence angle than that reported in the literature at lower intensities. Foils 5μm thick show triple-humped plasma expansion patterns at the back and front surfaces. Hybrid code modeling shows that this can be attributed to an increase in the mean energy of the fast electrons emitted at large radii, which only have sufficient energy to form a plasma in such thin targets. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Background Beta-blockers, used as an adjunctive to diuretics, digoxin and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, improve survival in chronic heart failure. We report a prospectively planned economic analysis of the cost of adjunctive beta-blocker therapy in the second Cardiac Insufficiency BIsoprolol Study (CIBIS II). Methods Resource utilization data (drug therapy, number of hospital admissions, length of hospital stay, ward type) were collected prospectively in all patients in CIBIS . These data were used to determine the additional direct costs incurred, and savings made, with bisoprolol therapy. As well as the cost of the drug, additional costs related to bisoprolol therapy were added to cover the supervision of treatment initiation and titration (four outpatient clinic/office visits). Per them (hospital bed day) costings were carried out for France, Germany and the U.K. Diagnosis related group costings were performed for France and the U.K. Our analyses took the perspective of a third party payer in France and Germany and the National Health Service in the U.K. Results Overall, fewer patients were hospitalized in the bisoprolol group, there were fewer hospital admissions perpatient hospitalized, fewer hospital admissions overall, fewer days spent in hospital and fewer days spent in the most expensive type of ward. As a consequence the cost of care in the bisoprolol group was 5-10% less in all three countries, in the per them analysis, even taking into account the cost of bisoprolol and the extra initiation/up-titration visits. The cost per patient treated in the placebo and bisoprolol groups was FF35 009 vs FF31 762 in France, DM11 563 vs DM10 784 in Germany and pound 4987 vs pound 4722 in the U.K. The diagnosis related group analysis gave similar results. Interpretation Not only did bisoprolol increase survival and reduce hospital admissions in CIBIS II, it also cut the cost of care in so doing. This `win-win' situation of positive health benefits associated with cost savings is Favourable from the point of view of both the patient and health care systems. These findings add further support for the use of beta-blockers in chronic heart failure.

Abstract

AIMS To compare the efficacy and safety of lanoteplase, a single-bolus thrombolytic drug derived from alteplase tissue plasminogen activator, with the established accelerated alteplase regimen in patients presenting within 6 h of onset of ST elevation acute myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS 15,078 patients were recruited from 855 hospitals worldwide and randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive either lanoteplase 120 KU. kg(-1)as a single intravenous bolus, or up to 100 mg accelerated alteplase given over 90 min. The primary end-point was all-cause mortality at 30 days and the hypothesis was that the two treatments would be equivalent. By 30 days, 6.61% of alteplase-treated patients and 6.75% lanoteplase-treated patients had died (relative risk 1.02). Total stroke occurred in 1.53% alteplase- and 1.87% lanoteplase-treated patients (ns); haemorrhagic stroke rates were 0.64% alteplase and 1.12% lanoteplase (P=0.004). The net clinical deficit of 30-day death or non-fatal disabling stroke was 7.0% and 7.2%, respectively. By 6 months, 8.8% of alteplase-treated patients and 8.7% of lanoteplase-treated patients had died. CONCLUSION Single-bolus weight-adjusted lanoteplase is an effective thrombolytic agent, equivalent to alteplase in terms of its impact on survival and with a comparable risk-benefit profile. The single-bolus regimen should shorten symptoms to treatment times and be especially convenient for emergency department or out-of-hospital administration.

Abstract

The Bremsstrahlung and K-shell emission from 1×1×1 mm[superscript 3] planar targets irradiated by a short-pulse 3×10[superscript 18]–8×10[superscript 19] W/cm[superscript 2] laser were measured. The Bremsstrahlung was measured using a filter stack spectrometer with spectral discrimination up to 500 keV. K-shell emission was measured using a single photon counting charge coupled device. From Monte Carlo modeling of the target emission, conversion efficiencies into 1–3 MeV electrons of 3%–12%, representing 20%–40% total conversion efficiencies, were inferred for intensities up to 8×10[superscript 19] W/cm[superscript 2]. Comparisons to scaling laws using synthetic energy spectra generated from the intensity distribution of the focal spot imply slope temperatures less than the ponderomotive potential of the laser. Resistive transport effects may result in potentials of a few hundred kV in the first few tens of microns in the target. This would lead to higher total conversion efficiencies than inferred from Monte Carlo modeling but lower conversion efficiencies into 1–3 MeV electrons., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
