The objective of this study was to compare immediate intramammary antimicrobial treatment of mild and moderate cases of clinical mastitis (CM) with a selective treatment protocol based on on-farm culture results using Accumast®. The study was conducted at a 2600 cow commercial farm in Northeast Germany. Using a randomized design, mild and moderate clinical mastitis cases were assigned to either the blanket therapy (BT) or pathogen-based therapy (SELECT) group. Overall, 468 cases were used for final analyses (BT = 236; SELECT = 232). The percentage of cases assigned to the blanket and pathogen-based groups that received intramammary therapy were 100 and 69.9%, respectively. Implementation of a pathogen-based treatment protocol for mild and moderate CM cases resulted in no significant difference in post-event milk production, somatic cell count, survival to 30 d, and days spent in the hospital compared with a blanket therapy protocol. Cows in the SELECT group had reduced odds of being culled within 60 d post CM (odds ratio = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.31–0.93; p = 0.027). The use of a pathogen-based treatment protocol using an on-farm culture system has the potential to efficiently reduce antimicrobial use without negative effects on health.

Das Ziel der Studie war die Entwicklung einer neuen Methode zur Verarbeitung und Auswertung von Aktivitätsdaten aus Systemen zur automatischen Aktivitätsüberwachung (AAM) für die Brunsterkennung bei Milchkühen. Alle bereits etablierten Methoden beinhalten Arbeitsschritte, die per Hand ausgeführt werden und dementsprechend, besonders bei großen Datenmengen, fehleranfällig sind. Somit lag der Fokus der Entwicklung auf einer reproduzierbaren und validierten Methode mit minimalen Benutzerinteraktionen. Als Datengrundlage verwendeten wir Aktivitätsdaten aus am Hals befestigten Beschleunigungsmessern (Heatime, SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel), die in der Milchindustrie weitverbreitet sind. In der Programmiersprache Python entwickelten wir die quelloffene Analysesoftware Bovine Heat Detection and Analysis Tool (BovHEAT), die eine vollautomatische und skalierbare Datenverarbeitung zur Brunsterkennung ermöglicht. Weiter bietet BovHEAT die Behandlung von fehlenden Werten und eine Plausibilitätsprüfung für das Timing der Brunstereignisse. Die Ergebnisse werden in Form einer Excel-Datei mit Ergebnistabellen im long und wide Format ausgegeben. Zusätzlich wird eine PDF-Datei mit Liniendiagrammen aus den Aktivitätsdaten mit markierten Brunstereignissen erzeugt. Zur Validierung haben wir die Genauigkeit und den Zeitaufwand von drei verschiedenen Methoden zur Verarbeitung von AAM-Daten verglichen: 1) manuelle Datenauswertung (MAN), 2) ein in der Forschung etabliertes Excel-Tool (EXCEL), und 3) BovHEAT. Es wurden zwei verschiedene Datensätze von 8 Betrieben (1 Betrieb in Kanada; 7 Betriebe in Deutschland) verwendet. Die Validierung wurde von drei Untersuchern unabhängig durchgeführt. Insgesamt wurden Aktivitätsdaten von 60 Kühen verwendet, was einer maximalen Anzahl von 600 Beobachtungen (50 Tage mit 12 Beobachtungen pro Tag) pro Kuh entspricht. Die manuelle Datenauswertung war aufgrund von Transkriptionsfehlern weniger genau: 13 von 60 Kühen wiesen mindestens einen Fehler auf und 16 von 110 Brunstereignissen wurden fehlerhaft erfasst. Die Zeit für die Verarbeitung der AAM-Daten und die Übertragung der Ergebnisse in eine standardisierte Ergebnistabelle für 10 Kühe betrug 41,0 (Bereich 28 - 53) Minuten, 30,7 (18 - 48) Minuten und 11,7 (4 - 16) Minuten für MAN, EXCEL und BovHEAT. Ohne die standardisierte Ergebnistabelle benötigte ein vollautomatischer Durchlauf mit BovHEAT zur Verarbeitung des kompletten Datensatzes von 5.477 Kühen mit 361 XLS- und XLSX-Dateien 172 Sekunden. Die BovHEAT Software kann auf GitHub (https://github.com/bovheat/bovheat, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3890126 ) evaluiert und heruntergeladen werden. Durch die MIT-Lizensierung kann die Software um die Unterstützung weiterer Sensoren und Hersteller kollaborativ erweitert werden. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zeigen, dass mit BovHEAT eine reprodzierbare und validierte Methode zur Verarbeitung und Auswertung von AAM-Daten entwickelt wurde. Wenige Benutzerinteraktionen und zusätzliche Funktionen ermöglichen eine beschleunigte Forschung mit AAM-Daten mit sichergestellter Reproduzierbarkeit.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of evaporative cooling at two different frequen-cies per day on the respiration rate (rr) of lactating dairy cows, considering cow-related factors. twenty multiparous israeli holstein dairy cows housed in a naturally ventilated cowshed were di-vided randomly into two treatment groups. the cows of both groups were exposed to 3 or 8 cooling sessions per day (3xcool vs. 8xcool, respectively). the rr was observed hourly, with a maximum of 12 measurements per day. Body posture (standing vs. lying) was simultaneously documented. milk yield was recorded daily. coat color was determined from a digital photograph. the rr of standing and lying cows was lower in the 8xcool group (60.2 and 51.6 breaths per min (bpm), re-spectively) than in the 3xcool group (73.1 and 65.6 bpm, respectively). For each increment of five kilograms of milk produced, rr increased by one bpm, and the rr of cows in early days in milk (dim) was 12.3 bpm higher than that of cows in late dim. in conclusion, eight cooling sessions per day instead of three lead to a rr abatement in heat-stressed cows under hot conditions, and cow-related factors directly impact the rr during heat stress assessment

Zielsetzung: Wiki-Systeme gewinnen im universitären Bereich überwiegend bei jungen Nutzern an Bedeutung. Anhand einer Umfrage sollte untersucht werden, wie Studierende der Tiermedizin Wiki-Systeme bisher nutzen, ob sie ein fachspezifisches, tiermedizinisches Wiki-System als sinnvoll erachten und wie hoch die Bereitschaft zur Mitgestaltung ist. Methodik: Die Datenerhebung erfolgte als empirische Untersuchung mit Hilfe eines Fragebogens, der Studierenden (n=210) des Fachbereiches Veterinärmedizin (Freie Universität Berlin) ausgehändigt wurde. Der Fragebogen enthielt Fragen zur Nutzung von Wikipedia allgemein und für den universitären Gebrauch und zur Nutzung und Akzeptanz von speziellen tiermedizinischen Wiki-Systemen. Ergebnisse: Die meisten Befragten hatten vorwiegend Leseerfahrungen mit Wikipedia und tiermedizinischen Wiki-Systemen, vor allem jüngere Semester. Im Gegensatz dazu war die aktive Nutzung hinsichtlich Schreiben oder Verändern von Informationen gering (8,6% Wikipedia, 15,3% tiermedizinische Wiki-Systeme). Sie war bei männlichen Nutzern (p=0,008) und in höheren Semestern (7,4% Anteil am 7. Semester) stärker vorhanden. Die bisherige Nutzung universitär genutzter tiermedizinischer Wiki-Systeme war ebenfalls gering. Die Mehrheit der Studierenden (96,2%) gab jedoch an, tiermedizinische Wiki-Systeme als Informationsmedium (d.h. passiv) in Zukunft nutzen zu wollen. Auch hier wurde eine niedrige Bereitschaft zur aktiven Erstellung von Inhalten angegeben. Allerdings erwarten viele Studierende beim Verfassen eigener Texte einen größeren Lernerfolg. Ein Vertrauen in die Informationsqualität eines Wiki-Systems ist bei den Studierenden grundsätzlich vorhanden. Schlussfolgerung: Die Einschätzung der Wiki-Systeme als nützliche Nachschlagewerke (94,8%) und die Befürwortung tiermedizinischer Wiki-Systeme (95,7%) lässt eine erfolgreiche Etablierung von veterinärmedizinischen Wiki-Systemen erwarten. The objectives of the study were to compare the climate conditions of 7 dairy farms with the climate recorded at the closest official meteorological station. Specifically, we set out to compare the ambient temperature, relative humidity, and the resulting temperature-humidity index (THI) from 7 different barns with those data obtained from the closest official meteorological stations and to compare the climate conditions between 4 different locations within 1 barn. Measures of correlation and agreement demonstrated that climate conditions differ significantly between the barn and the corresponding official meteorological stations as well as between 4 different locations inside 1 barn. The ambient temperature was higher (6.4 ± 3.6°C) in the barn than at the official meteorological station. The relative humidity was higher at the official meteorological station (0.2 ± 7.2%) than in the barn. The THI was higher (11.1 ± 6.5) in the barn than at the official meteorological station. Days with an average THI ≥ 72 were 64 and 4 out of 756 experimental d in the barn and at the official meteorological station, respectively. Also, in a comparison of 7 different barns, ambient temperature and THI were significantly higher than at the closest corresponding official meteorological station. These results indicate that climate conditions should be obtained from on-farm measurements to evaluate potential heat stress and to develop effective measures to abate heat stress of dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality and comparability of published literature, and to summarize the effect of prostaglandin F(2α) (PGF(2α)) for the treatment of endometritis. It has been postulated that there is a dearth of high-level evidence-based research results in veterinary medicine. Also, there is a marked variation in the quality of studies in veterinary and animal science. Post-partum uterine infections occur commonly in dairy cattle and are reported to have a negative impact on reproductive performance. A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing online databases revealing a total of 2723 references. After applying specific exclusion criteria, a total of 68 trials were eligible for further analysis. These articles were evaluated utilizing specific parameters listed in an evaluation form such as randomization and the involvement of control groups. The analysis revealed that more than half of the trials (51·5%) were at least 20 years old. Furthermore, we found that about one third (36·8%) of all trials were controlled and randomized, while 3 of those (4·4%) were also blinded. Of those trials which calculated a calving-to-conception interval (n=30), 50% of the authors claimed an improvement, which was statistically significant in 23·3% of the cases. We conclude that there is a wide discrepancy between research results investigating the efficacy of PGF(2α).

In der vorliegenden Untersuchung sollte geklärt werden, ob durch eine prophylaktische Behandlung mit homöopathischen Komplexmitteln in einem Milchviehbetrieb Störungen in der Puerperalphase verringert werden können. In eine randomisierte Doppelblindstudie wurden 146 Milchkühe eines nach ökologischen Richtlinien wirtschaftenden Betriebes mit einer durchschnittlichen Laktationsleistung von 5.100 kg Milch/Kuh/Jahr aufgenommen. Die Tiere wurden zwei Gruppen zugeordnet. In der Versuchsgruppe (VG: n=76) erfolgte die Behandlung zum Zeitpunkt des Trockenstellens mit Carduus comp.' und Coenzyme cornp.', unmittelbar post partum (p.p.) mit Traumeel', 7 Tage p.p. mit Lachesis cornp.' und am Tag 14 p.p. wieder mit Carduus conip.' und Coenzyme comp.'. In der Kontrollgruppe (KG: n=70) erhielten die Tiere ein Placebo. Alle Präparate wurden subkutan zu je 5 ml verabreicht. Zum Trockenstellen, zur Kalbung und wöchentlich bis zum Tag 35 p.p. wurden die Kühe klinisch untersucht. Jeweils zeitgleich erfolgte die Entnahme von Blutproben. Der Behandlungserfolg wurde anhand von klinisch-gynäkologischen Parametern, Fruchtbarkeitskennzahien und der Ergebnisse der Blutserumprofile (Calcium (Ca), anorganisches Phosphor (P), Aspartat-Amino-Transferase (AST), Harnstoff, Bilirubin) beurteilt. Die Fruchtbarkeitsdaten der Herde wurden zwischen den beiden Behandlungsgruppen und retrospektiv mit denen der vorangegangenen Laktation verglichen. Grundlage dieser ersten Mitteilung sind die Ergebnisse der Entwicklung der Fruchtbarkeitsleistung. Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Behandlungsgruppen konnten bei den Fruchtbarkeitsparametern (Rastzeit, Güstzeit, Konzeptionsrate) nicht festgestellt werden, obwohl die Tiere in der VG früher eine zyklische Ovaraktivität zeigten (68 % vs. 62 %; P > 0,051. Wurde die Milchleistung als Einflussfaktor mit in das Model einbezogen, wies die VG einen signifikant höheren Anteil an früher zyklischen Tieren auf (82 % vs. 57 %, P P 00.5). Es zeigte sich, dass die Tiere der VG eine signifikant schlechtere Brunstnutzungsrate aufwiesen. In der Herde konnte insgesamt eine leichte Verbesserung der Fruchtbarkeinsituation im Vergleich zur vorangegangenen Laktation erzielt werden. Die prophylaktische Behandlung aller Tiere der Herde erwies sich als nicht sinnvoll. Therapeutische Effekte konnten nur bei Tieren mit höherer Miichleistung, vor allem in der aktuellen Laktation, erzielt werden. Die Fruchtbarkeitsleistung in der vorangegangenen Laktation hatte auf den Behandlungserfolg in dieser Untersuchung keinen Einfluss.

In an organic dairy herd (250 cows) a homeopathic dry cow treatment should be evaluated while an antibiotic dry cow therapy (DCT) was totally abandoned. A ran-domized placebo-controlled double blind study with a herd specific nosode (D30) was conducted. Either 5 ml of the nosode (VG) or a placebo (KG) was orally administered in weekly intervals four times before drying off, at the day of calving and seven days post partum (p.p.). The efficacy of treatment was measured according to quarter foremilk samples at the days of treatment, six weeks p.p. and at the end of the 2nd and 3rd month of lactation. Data of 129 cows with 512 quarters (VG:n=65/260; KG:n=64/252) was evaluable. New intramammary infections (IMIn) cure rates and cases of clinical mastitis in both treatment groups were nearly identical. In the VG 20% of the quarters came along with IMIn. In the KG IMIn were about 5% higher along the observation period (p>0.05). The cure rates of infected quarters were about 40% in both treatment groups (p>0.05). The complete abdication of antibiotics in DCT did not cause an impairment of udder health. Moreover the number of healthy quarters in-creased and the mean bulk milk somatic cell count decreased slightly during the study. The results of the study show that the use of antibiotics can be highly de-creased though a minimal use is indispensable, especially in herds suffering from udder health problems. Still the most essential prophylactic task is to optimize the housing conditions in the dry period and around calving. The presented dry cow man-agement in conjunction with a selective use of antibiotics can be implemented in veterinary herd health programs on other dairy farms.

Die Trockenperiode sowie die peripartale Phase stellen im Produktionsablauf einer Milchkuh den Zeitraum des größten Mastitisrisikos dar. Nach wie vor ist die antibiotische Behandlung zum Laktationsende das Standardverfahren zur Therapie und Prophylaxe von Infektionen in der Trockenphase. Dies wird aber zunehmend kritisch betrachtet, insbesondere wenn es sich zum Zeitpunkt des Trockenstellens um eutergesunde Tiere handelt. In einigen skandinavischen Ländern wird aufgrund gesetzlicher Rahmenbedingungen weitgehend auf den Einsatz von Antibiotika zum Trockenstellen verzichtet. Darüber hinaus werden die Gefahr der Resistenzbildung, sowie Rückstände oder Kontamination von Lebensmitteln diskutiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund gewinnen nicht-antibiotische Verfahren zum Trockenstellen an Bedeutung
