Abstract

We study the gain and noise of a receiver consisting of a niobium junction embedded in an aluminum impedance matching circuit. The junction is operated in a waveguide mount with an adjustable backshort. The uncorrected double side band noise temperatures are 940 K to 1388 K for 820 to 980 GHz respectively. The total optical loss is obtained from the losses of the individual components, the losses in the stripline are calculated using the Reuter-Sondheimer equation in the extreme anomalous limit. The embedding impedance follows from the pumped curves and the Tucker equations which are also used to determine the noise and gain of the junction. The main limitation to the receiver sensitivity is shown to be the loss in the aluminum circuit. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate an optical network compatible high-speed optoelectronics THz wireless transmission system operating at 400-GHz band. In the experiment, optical Nyquist quadrature phase-shift keying signals in a 12.5-GHz ultradense wavelength-division multiplexing grid is converted to the THz wireless radiation by photomixing in an antenna integrated unitravelling photodiode. The photomixing is transparent to optical modulation formats. We also demonstrate in the experiment the scalability of our system by applying single to four channels, as well as mixed three channels. Wireless transmission of a capacity of 60 Gb/s for four channels (15 Gb/s per channel) at 400-GHz band is successfully achieved, which pushes the data rates enabled by optoelectronics approach beyond the envelope in the frequency range above 300 GHz. Besides those, this study also validates the potential of bridging next generation 100 Gigabit Ethernet wired data stream for very high data rate indoor applications.

Abstract

A 585 GHz compact range has been developed for obtaining full-scale radar cross-section (RCS) measurements on scale-model targets. The transceiver consists of two continuous wave (CW) submillimeter-wave gas lasers along with two cooled-InSb heterodyne mixers. Coherent detection was implemented to maximize sensitivity and allow for a vector measurement capability. In addition, the target can be rapidly translated in range to generate a doppler modulation that is used to reject background signals during low-RCS measurements. Although most scaling is accomplished with metal targets, a materials program has evolved to develop non-metallic materials with scaled dielectric properties as well as submillimeter-wave anechoics. As part of an on-going validation and test program, RCS measurements are made on scaled simple and complex shapes and compared with full-scale measurements and computer predictions.
