There are many strategic policy issues related to reliability and operations for integration of renewables in California. Historically, these issues have been addressed individually and often litigiously. As the type and level of renewables in the energy mix increases, the number of reliability and operational issues are expected to increase. To meet the objectives of the RPS and accelerate development of renewables, California needs a predictable policy framework for operational integration of new renewables. The present study seeks to learn from the experiences and best practices of other regions that have integrated large amounts of renewables and assess the applicable lessons they provide for California, in establishing a stable policy framework for addressing the operational and reliability issues for renewables integration.

This paper reviews the literature on simulations-based teaching in the discipline of international relations and associated social science fields, tracing the development of frequently used simulations platforms over the last half-century. It then examines the application of the Council on Foreign Relations' Model Diplomacy program in three courses, International Crisis Simulations, Political Development, and Politics of Asia, at a small liberal arts college in the South from 2018 to 2019 and considers the effectiveness of simulations-based teaching in achieving desired learning outcomes, such as critical and analytical thinking, oral and written communication, and collaboration. Finally, the paper provides practical steps and suggestions for the integration of Model Diplomacy and other simulations into an array of Asian studies courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Objective:To determine whether deployment of an integrated virtual sepsis surveillance program could improve time to antibiotics and mortality in a longitudinal cohort of non-present on admission (NPOA) sepsis cases. Methods:We used an uncontrolled pre- and poststudy design to compare time to antibiotics and mortality between a time-based cohort of NPOA sepsis cases separated by the deployment of a virtual sepsis surveillance program. Results:A total of 566 NPOA sepsis cases were included in this study. Three hundred and thirty-five cases compromised the preintervention arm, whereas the postintervention cohort included 231 cases. After deployment of the virtual sepsis surveillance program, median time to antibiotics improved from 92 to 59 min (p < 0.001). Mortality was reduced from 30% to 21% (p = 0.015). Conclusion:Deployment of a virtual sepsis surveillance program resulted in a decreased time to antibiotics and an overall reduction in NPOA sepsis mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
