5. Feasibility, Design and Construction of a Small Hydroelectric Power Generation Station as a Student Design Project.

Abstract

An undergraduate capstone engineering design project now provides hydroelectric power to a remote wilderness location. Students investigated the feasibility of designing, building, and installing a 4kW hydroelectric system to satisfy the need for electric power to support the research and teaching functions of Taylor Ranch, a university facility far from the utility grid. After showing such a system to be feasible, they proceeded to design and build it. Technical issues and stringent environmental regulations are addressed. The students documented their design and developed instructions for installation and operation. The system was installed and currently provides electric power for Taylor Ranch. The first year of operation is briefly described and photographs of the equipment are presented. (Author)

Abstract

Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions in stellar binary systems, and important sources of Al-26 and Na-22. While ? rays from the decay of the former radioisotope have been observed throughout the Galaxy, Na-22 remains untraceable. Its half-life (2.6 yr) would allow the observation of its 1.275 MeV ?-ray line from a cosmic source. However, the prediction of such an observation requires good knowledge of its nucleosynthesis. The Na-22(p, ?)Mg-23 reaction remains the only source of large uncertainty about the amount of Na-22 ejected. Its rate is dominated by a single resonance on the short-lived state at 7785.0(7) keV in Mg-23. Here, we propose a combined analysis of particle-particle correlations and velocity-difference profiles to measure femtosecond nuclear lifetimes. The application of this method to the study of the Mg-23 states, places strong limits on the amount of Na-22 produced in novae and constrains its detectability with future space-borne observatories. The authors report a particle-particle correlation and velocity-difference profile method to measure nuclear lifetime. The results obtained for excited states of 23Mg are used to constrain the production of 22Na in the astrophysical novae explosions.

Abstract

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. The differential decay curve method (DDCM) was used to obtain the lifetimes from the RDDS data.

13. New Method for Testing Induction Machines in a Teaching Laboratory.

Abstract

A testing method for a wound rotor induction machine's torque-speed curve is presented. This method uses two induction machines instead of the conventional method that uses an induction machine and a DC machine. By varying the frequency on one of the two couped induction machines, the intersection of their torque-speed curves varies, allowing collection of torque, speed, current, and voltage data over a full operating range. Energy sources and sinks employed are the public utility and a synchronous machine, though this method is applicable with variable speed drives for both induction machines. Abstract

Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+3 → 2+1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+1;ms states.

Abstract

A team of four undergraduate senior engineering design students complete a project to create a mobile platform for the university marching band. Students perform the research, design, construction, and testing to specifications that they negotiate with the project sponsor. In doing so, they bring a project from a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 2 to a TRL 8. They research what has been done in similar situations in general, finding that an effective mobile platform for piano and similar instruments in a marching band is rare. They assemble documents and equipment from an earlier design attempt, determining that the concept was valid but the technology as attempted was badly inadequate. In coordination with the band director, they negotiate specifications for the unit. They build a frame and platform in coordination with a mechanical engineering design team. They design a communications system to link the platform's music production to the stadium's audio system and to provide command and control of movement of the unit. They create a propulsion system of motors, electronic drives, real time control, and wireless communication to move the platform precisely as specified by a remote operator. Their energy management system provides sufficient and monitored power at point of use through control of energy distribution, application, and storage. The resulting unit performs as specified in four home football games, proving their completion to TRL 8. Methods whereby students learned to create a successful project are illustrated. The project was completed on budget and on time. Recommendations for further improvement are presented. Abstract

Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) can be designed to aid the integration of large-scale distribution generation (DG) such as photovoltaic into the power grid. Through this concept, it is plausible for the DG to exhibit the characteristics and behavior of synchronous generators (SG) such as inertia, droop functions and damping. These factors make it possible for the DG to contribute to the control and stability of the power grid. In this paper, VSG model was designed and study was conducted using it in order to demonstrate that the VSG does have quite similar structure to conventional SG. The responses of both the SG and VSG to changes in varying operating conductions are compared and the results presented in this paper. These models are designed and implemented in an electromagnetic transient program (RMTP).

Abstract

The U.S. Navy is looking for methods to maximize the survivability of combat ships during battle conditions. A shipboard power distribution system is a stiff isolated power system that is vulnerable to voltage sags, which arise due to faults or pulsed loads, which can cause interruptions of critical loads. A series voltage injection type flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is used to mitigate voltage sags and maximize the survivability of the ship. The basic circuit consists of an energy storage system, power electronic interface, and a series injection transformer. In this case, the energy storage system consists of a flywheel coupled to an induction machine. The stored energy is used for sag correction for the critical load. Indirect field-oriented control (IDFOC) with space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) is used to control the induction machine. Sinusoidal PWM is used for controlling the power system side converter. This paper presents the modeling, simulation, and analysis of a FESS with a power converter interface using PSCAD/EMTDC. Abstract

For filament-based heating processes, a minimum-component power converter topology with a universal line voltage interface virtually eliminates flicker. It provides asynchronous linear power control, with unity power factor and low harmonic content over a wide range of power levels. With common control methods, it exploits the natural behavior of filament-based heating processes. The topology is derived, its linear power control is developed and simulated, and its experimental performance is presented. Abstract

Integrated circuits have been invented for managing the charging and discharging of such advanced miniature energy-storage devices as planar arrays of microscopic energy-storage elements [typically, microscopic electrochemical cells (microbatteries) or microcapacitors]. The architecture of these circuits enables implementation of the following energy-management options: dynamic configuration of the elements of an array into a series or parallel combination of banks (subarrarys), each array comprising a series of parallel combination of elements; direct addressing of individual banks for charging/or discharging; and, disconnection of defective elements and corresponding reconfiguration of the rest of the array to utilize the remaining functional elements to obtain the desited voltage and current performance. An integrated circuit according to the invention consists partly of a planar array of field-effect transistors that function as switches for routing electric power among the energy-storage elements, the power source, and the load. To connect the energy-storage elements to the power source for charging, a specific subset of switches is closed; to connect the energy-storage elements to the load for discharging, a different specific set of switches is closed. Also included in the integrated circuit is circuitry for monitoring and controlling charging and discharging. The control and monitoring circuitry, the switching transistors, and interconnecting metal lines are laid out on the integrated-circuit chip in a pattern that registers with the array of energy-storage elements. There is a design option to either (1) fabricate the energy-storage elements in the corresponding locations on, and as an integral part of, this integrated circuit; or (2) following a flip-chip approach, fabricate the array of energy-storage elements on a separate integrated-circuit chip and then align and bond the two chips together.

Abstract

A shifter circuit comprises a high and low voltage buffer stages and an output buffer stage. The high voltage buffer stage comprises multiple transistors arranged in a transistor stack having a plurality of intermediate nodes connecting individual transistors along the stack. The transistor stack is connected between a voltage level being shifted to and an input voltage. An inverter of this stage comprises multiple inputs and an output. Inverter inputs are connected to a respective intermediate node of the transistor stack. The low voltage buffer stage has an input connected to the input voltage and an output, and is operably connected to the high voltage buffer stage. The low voltage buffer stage is connected between a voltage level being shifted away from and a lower voltage. The output buffer stage is driven by the outputs of the high voltage buffer stage inverter and the low voltage buffer stage.

Abstract

A new SCR-based naturally commutated induction motor drive that provides high torque over a wide speed range is presented. Topology is similar to that of certain naturally commutated current source inverters, but modulation techniques and system performance are very different. Two novel switching algorithms are proposed to cover the low-speed and high-speed regimes. Torque ripple is negligible in the low-speed region. With these two switching techniques, commutation is reliable and operation within peak device voltage stress limits is guaranteed. For induction machine loads, this drive has the torque-speed capability typical of a cycloconverter (but with far fewer devices), plus a field weakening range that the cycloconverter does not have. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

Abstract

To study the nuclear structure of neutron-rich titanium isotopes, a lifetime measurement was performed at the Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility in Caen, France. The nucleiwere produced in a multinucleon-transfer reaction by using a 6.76 MeV/u 238U beam. The Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was employed for the γ-ray detection and target-like recoils were identified event-by-event by the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). Preliminary level lifetimes of the (5/2−) to 13/2− states of the yrast band in the neutron-rich nucleus 53Ti were measured for the first time employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method and the compact plunger for deep inelastic reactions. Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 42Ca was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in 42Ca were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in 42Ca, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2+ 1 and 2+ 2 states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0+ 1,2 and 2+ 1,2 states, as well as triaxiality for 0+ 1,2 states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in 42Ca. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in 42Ca.

Abstract

Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in 80,82Se were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ -ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In 80Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6+ 1 ) and (8+ 1 ) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4+ 1 state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In 82Se, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6+ 1 state and the yrare 4+ 2 state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10+ 1 ) state and of the 5− 1 state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states’ wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g9/2 orbital.

48. Student-Led Study of Energy Flow and Storage in an Emergency Microgrid.

Abstract

Students investigate the feasibility of forming a microgrid in the downtown area of a larger city in the Pacific Northwest. The objectives of this study are twofold: 1) Create a microgrid to provide for prioritized urban loads and 2) prepare students who will likely design and install several microgrids in the region in the next few years. Generation is two hydroelectric units and a nearly equal amount of distributed photovoltaics. The grid is defined and its elements identified and modeled in PowerWorld®. Simulations reveal that all loads cannot be served all the time with available generation. The nature and size of priority loads vary most with seasons and also with time of day. Battery storage is not effective because the public utility cannot afford enough of it. Simulations show that steady state stability is readily achieved and maintained, including voltage and frequency stability. Graduate students led the study and, under their direction, undergraduates contributed greatly to the work: They defined the project, they brought resources from their education to bear for characterizing, modeling, analyzing, and improving the proposed microgrid, and they effectively and efficiently modeled with system with state-of-the-art modeling tools. Assessment indicates that the student team achieved the proposed outcomes and enabled the public utility to move forward to the next step toward eventual installation. Students who performed this study have all been employed within the public utility industry or directly supporting industries, receiving no shortage of job offers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Byline: Robert G. Wiegers, Donald M. Blackketter, Herbert L. Hess This paper describes the development of a computer model to model performance of ultracapacitor arrays in hybrid electric vehicles. A Power-Based Model (PBM) was created and the results were compared with data from the University of Idaho's ultracapacitor hybrid Future Truck. The PBM accurately predicts vehicle fuel economy and allows quick simulation speed. This model includes a derived Internal Combustion (IC) engine fuel map with interpolation function and a random capacitance generator for balancing circuit implementation. Experimental data showed that the Future Truck averaged 15.9 mpg operating non-hybrid whereas the PBM predicted 16.8 mpg for a non-hybrid set-up over the same drive cycle, a 5% difference. PBM as shown can accurately predict the vehicle performance including the added benefits from implementing an ultracapacitor array and balancing circuits. Using PBM, it is seen that ultracapacitors are a viable energy storage solution for hybrid electric vehicles.
