Abstract

Extrahepatic cancers of the biliary system are typically asymptomatic until after metastasis, which contributes to their poor prognosis. Here we examined intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas (n = 8), carcinomas of perihilar bile ducts (n = 7), carcinomas of the gallbladder (n = 11) and hepatic metastasis from carcinomas of the gallbladder (n = 4) for the expression of the extracellular matrix glycoproteins tenascin-C and tenascin-W. Anti-tenascin-C and anti-tenascin-W immunoreactivity was found in all biliary tract tumors examined. Unlike tenascin-C, tenascin-W was not detected in normal hepatobiliary tissue. Tenascin-W was also expressed by the cholangiocarcinoma-derived cell line Huh-28. However, co-culture of Huh-28 cells with immortalized bone marrow-derived stromal cells was necessary for the formation and organization of tenascin-W fibrils in vitro. Our results indicate that tenascin-W may be a novel marker of hepatobiliary tumor stroma, and its absence from many normal tissues suggests that it may be a potential target for biotherapies.

Abstract

Thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by the degeneration of joint surfaces at the base of the thumb. If conservative treatments have failed, surgery may be needed to improve symptoms. Typically, standard clinical tools, such as the pinch gauge, are used to measure thumb force. However, these devices have utilized multiple digits and do not represent forces specifically generated by the thumb. Therefore, different devices are necessary to accurately measure isolated thumb force. The primary objective was to research the effect of thumb force after ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition surgery. To accomplish this, several sub-objectives were implemented: (1) create a testing device to collect isolated thumb forces, (2) collect a normative thumb force data set of males and females to compare the impact of aging and surgery, (3) collect and compare clinical data to see if these data sets matched isolated thumb forces, (4) determine the effect of wrist position on isolated thumb force data in different wrist positions, and (5) collect thumb force in directions that mimic daily activities, a directional force downward (push) and inward (pull). On average, older participants generated statistically larger forces than younger participants. Additionally, only 50% of CMC OA participants showed greater than 5 N of improvement at 6-months post-surgery compared to pre-surgery, but did not reach healthy force levels. When evaluating wrist rotation, OA participants' push and pull decreased by 8 N and 7 N in the horizontal wrist position, and their push and pull increased by 2 N and 5 N in the vertical wrist position. Evaluation and results with standard clinical tools showed different post-surgery trends than isolated force data, which suggested the clinical approach has mixed results and may be under- or over-estimating the recovery process. These data sets allow surgeons and hand therapists to identify changes in isolated thumb force generation to create specialized therapies and treatment options, which is an improvement upon current clinical measurement tools. Abstract

Residential segregation between social groups has grown in European cities, while the housing sector has boomed in major cities since 2009. These two forces raise questions about the role of new housing construction in the growth of segregation. This article explores the sorting of both socio-economic and ethnic groups into three housing types: older, newer and renovated apartment buildings. We employ data from Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, where new housing construction has been extensive during the past ten years. We link census data with building-level data for publicly subsidised and privately funded housing renovations, and we calculate segregation indices by housing type and construct a multinomial regression model. Results suggest that publicly subsidised housing renovation contributes to continued mixing of socio-economic (occupational) groups, while new housing construction and especially private renovation increase segregation between ethnic and occupational groups. Ethnic and occupational segregation interact most strongly in privately funded apartment building renovations primarily within central city historic neighbourhoods. 47. On the Topology of Weakly and Strongly Separated Set Complexes

Abstract

We examine the topology of the clique complexes of the graphs of weakly and strongly separated subsets of the set $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$, which, after deleting all cone points, we denote by $\hat{\Delta}_{ws}(n)$ and $\hat{\Delta}_{ss}(n)$, respectively. In particular, we find that $\hat{\Delta}_{ws}(n)$ is contractible for $n\geq4$, while $\hat{\Delta}_{ss}(n)$ is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of dimension $n-3$. We also show that our homotopy equivalences are equivariant with respect to the group generated by two particular symmetries of $\hat{\Delta}_{ws}(n)$ and $\hat{\Delta}_{ss}(n)$: one induced by the set complementation action on subsets of $[n]$ and another induced by the action on subsets of $[n]$ which replaces each $k\in[n]$ by $n+1-k$.

48. Thermal evolution of massive compact objects with dense quark cores

Abstract

We examine the thermal evolution of a sequence of compact objects containing low-mass hadronic and high-mass quark-hadronic stars constructed from a microscopically motivated equation of state. The dependence of the cooling tracks in the temperature versus age plane is studied on the variations of the gaplessness parameter (the ratio of the pairing gap for red-green quarks to the electron chemical potential) and the magnitude of blue quark gap. The pairing in the red-green channel is modeled assuming an inhomogeneous superconducting phase to avoid tachionic instabilities and anomalies in the specific heat; the blue colored condensate is modeled as a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type color superconductor. We find that massive stars containing quark matter cool faster in the neutrino-cooling era if one of the colors (blue) is unpaired and/or the remaining colors (red-green) are paired in a inhomogeneous gapless superconducting state. The cooling curves show significant variations along the sequence, as the mass (or the central density) of the models is varied. This feature provides a handle for fine-tuning the models to fit the data on the surface temperatures of same-age neutron stars.
