The potential of pretreated sugarcane bagasse (SCB) as a low-cost and renewable source to yield activated carbon (AC) for chromate CrO42− removal from an aqueous solution has been investigated. Raw sugarcane bagasse was pretreated with H2SO4, H3PO4, HCl, HNO3, KOH, NaOH, or ZnCl2 before carbonization at 700 °C. Only pretreatments with H2SO4 and KOH yield clean AC powders, while the other powders still contain non-carbonaceous components. The point of zero charge for ACs obtained from SCB pretreated with H2SO4 and KOH is 7.71 and 2.62, respectively. Batch equilibrium studies show that the most effective conditions for chromate removal are a low pH (i.e., below 3) where >96% of the chromate is removed from the aqueous solution.

Biopolymers have significant pharmaceutical applications, and their blending has favorable characteristics for their pharmaceutical properties compared to the sole components. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) as a marine biopolymer was blended with poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) to form SA/PVA scaffolds through the freeze–thawing technique. Additionally, polyphenolic compounds in Moringa oleifera leaves were extracted by different solvents, and it was found that extracts with 80% methanol had the highest antioxidant activity. Different concentrations (0.0–2.5%) of this extract were successfully immobilized in SA/PVA scaffolds during preparation. The characterization of the scaffolds was carried out via FT-IR, XRD, TG, and SEM. The pure and Moringa oleifera extract immobilized SA/PVA scaffolds (MOE/SA/PVA) showed high biocompatibility with human fibroblasts. Further, they showed excellent in vitro and in vivo wound healing capacity, with the best effect noted for the scaffold with high extract content (2.5%).

Clouds and aerosols contribute the largest uncertainty to current estimates and interpretations of the Earth’s changing energy budget. Here we use a new-generation large-domain large-eddy model, ICON-LEM (ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic Large Eddy Model), to simulate the response of clouds to realistic anthropogenic perturbations in aerosols serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The novelty compared to previous studies is that (i) the LEM is run in weather prediction mode and with fully interactive land surface over a large domain and (ii) a large range of data from various sources are used for the detection and attribution. The aerosol perturbation was chosen as peak-aerosol conditions over Europe in 1985, with more than fivefold more sulfate than in 2013. Observational data from various satellite and ground-based remote sensing instruments are used, aiming at the detection and attribution of this response. The simulation was run for a selected day (2 May 2013) in which a large variety of cloud regimes was present over the selected domain of central Europe. It is first demonstrated that the aerosol fields used in the model are consistent with corresponding satellite aerosol optical depth retrievals for both 1985 (perturbed) and 2013 (reference) conditions. In comparison to retrievals from ground-based lidar for 2013, CCN profiles for the reference conditions were consistent with the observations, while the ones for the 1985 conditions were not. Similarly, the detection and attribution process was successful for droplet number concentrations: the ones simulated for the 2013 conditions were consistent with satellite as well as new ground-based lidar retrievals, while the ones for the 1985 conditions were outside the observational range. For other cloud quantities, including cloud fraction, liquid water path, cloud base altitude and cloud lifetime, the aerosol response was small compared to their natural variability. Also, large uncertainties in satellite and ground-based observations make the detection and attribution difficult for these quantities. An exception to this is the fact that at a large liquid water path value (LWP > 200 g m−2), the control simulation matches the observations, while the perturbed one shows an LWP which is too large. The model simulations allowed for quantifying the radiative forcing due to aerosol–cloud interactions, as well as the adjustments to this forcing. The latter were small compared to the variability and showed overall a small positive radiative effect. The overall effective radiative forcing (ERF) due to aerosol–cloud interactions (ERFaci) in the simulation was dominated thus by the Twomey effect and yielded for this day, region and aerosol perturbation −2.6 W m−2. Using general circulation models to scale this to a global-mean present-day vs. pre-industrial ERFaci yields a global ERFaci of −0.8 W m−2.

We report new heterogeneous organocatalyst based on silica hybrid supported N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC-) species. The organocatalyst is formed from an imidazolium iodide based ionosilica material, followed by iodide/acetate anion exchange. The imidazolium acetate generates the organocatalytic carbene via partial deprotonation of the imidazolium ring in situ. As monitored via EDX, solid state NMR and ion chromatography measurements, the iodide/acetate exchange involving the imidazolium ionosilica material took place only in small extent. Despite the fact that the exchanged material contains only a very small amount of acetate, we observed good catalytic activity and recyclability in cyanosilylation reactions of ketones with trimethylsilyl cyanide. The versatility of the catalyst was highlighted via reaction with several substrates, yielding the corresponding cyanohydrins in good yields. In recycling experiments, the material showed decreasing catalytic activity starting from the third reaction cycle, but high catalytic activity can be regenerated via another acetate treatment. Our work is important as it highlights the possibility to combine carbene chemistry and silica, which are antagonistic at a first glance. We show that imidazolium acetate based ionosilicas are therefore heterogeneous ‘proto-carbenes’, and that there is no need to form strongly basic silica supported NHCs to obtain heterogeneous NHC-organocatalysts. This work therefore opens the route towards heterogeneous and re-usable NHC-organocatalysts from supported ionic liquid imidazolium acetates.

The species diversity of benthic foraminifera at four abyssal working areas in the Labrador Sea, Labrador Basin, and Southwest of the Azores is documented. One hundred and fifty taxa (forty-three not assigned to a species) were found and their diversity was recorded. One hundred and twenty-four taxa (fifteen not assigned to a species) were illustrated with optical and/or SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images on twelve plates. The material was sampled during RV Sonne cruise SO286 as part of IceDivA2 (Icelandic marine Animals meets Diversity along latitudinal gradients in the deep sea of the Atlantic Ocean 2). IceDivA2 investigated the biodiversity within key groups of the marine benthic abyssal habitats of the North Atlantic. Thirty-two samples from four sliced and three full cores, from six stations sampled with a MUC (Multiple corer), were analyzed. Given low sedimentation rates in such environments the material is assumed to be of Holocene to late Pleistocene age. Due to the scarcity of living specimens this study was based on total assemblages. Four species-based clusters are identified, which correspond to the four working areas. The samples of each cluster show specific characteristics markedly different from those of the samples of the other clusters. It indicates that abyssal faunas are heterogeneous. Three clusters are dominated by Epistominella exigua (Brady, 1884), which is recorded as not rare to dominant in many abyssal plains worldwide. The faunal differences are manifested in the long tail of less important species and differing abundances of E. exigua.

A new water-soluble ionocellulose material bearing imidazolium tosylate groups was synthesized in a two-step sequence from cellulose, and the electrical conduction properties of this bio sourced polyelectrolyte were investigated. First, tosylcellulose was prepared from neat cellulose and tosyl chloride in the ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIM]Cl. Then, the ionocellulose containing imidazolium tosylate grafts was synthesized by reacting tosylcellulose and 1-methylimidazole. Both tosylcellulose and ionocellulose were characterized by different analytical techniques including elemental analysis, 13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetric analysis. We then compared the dielectric relaxation of neat cellulose with ionocellulose. For both samples, two secondary relaxations were identified at low temperature. These two relaxations became faster in ionocellulose containing imidazolium tosylate grafts. At higher temperatures (T > room temperature), the conductivity is markedly dominated by ionic motions. This work opens new perspectives for preparing a new category of ionocellulose derivatives which are expected to find applications in energy storage technologies and for the elaboration as novel high-performance film dielectric capacitors.

In the last few years, forward osmosis (FO) has attracted increasing interest as a sustainable technique for water desalination and wastewater treatment. However, FO remains as an immature process principally due to the lack of efficient and easily recyclable draw solutes. In this work, we report that ionosilica hydrogels based on quaternary ammonium halide ionosilica are efficient draw solutes in FO. Fluidic ionosilica hydrogels were obtained via hydrolysis-polycondensation reactions of a trisilylated quaternary ammonium precursor in slightly acidic water/ethanol solvent mixtures. The liquid-to-gel transition of the precursor and the kinetics of the formation of hydrogels were monitored by liquid NMR measurements. The formed hydrogels were shown to generate osmotic pressure up to 10.0 atm, indicating the potential of these hydrogels as efficient draw solutes in FO. Our results suggest that iodide anions are the osmotically active species in the system. Regeneration of the hydrogels via ultrafiltration (UF) was successfully achieved, allowing the development of a closed FO-UF process. However, the osmotic performances of the ionosilica hydrogels irreversibly decreased along the successive FO-UF cycles, probably due to anion exchange processes.

Vision impairment from corneal fibrosis is a common consequence of irregular corneal wound healing after injury. Intermediate-conductance calmodulin/calcium-activated K+ channels 3.1 (KCa3.1) play an important role in cell cycle progression and cellular proliferation. Proliferation and differentiation of corneal fibroblasts to myofibroblasts can lead to corneal fibrosis after injury. KCa3.1 has been shown in many non-ocular tissues to promote fibrosis, but its role in corneal fibrosis is still unknown. In this study, we characterized the expression KCa3.1 in the human cornea and its role in corneal wound healing in vivo using a KCa3.1 knockout (KCa3.1-/-) mouse model. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis that blockade of KCa3.1 by a selective KCa3.1 inhibitor, TRAM-34, could augment a novel interventional approach for controlling corneal fibrosis in our established in vitro model of corneal fibrosis. The expression of KCa3.1 gene and protein was analyzed in human and murine corneas. Primary human corneal fibroblast (HCF) cultures were used to examine the potential of TRAM-34 in treating corneal fibrosis by measuring levels of pro-fibrotic genes, proteins, and cellular migration using real-time quantitative qPCR, Western blotting, and scratch assay, respectively. Cytotoxicity of TRAM-34 was tested with trypan blue assay, and pro-fibrotic marker expression was tested in KCa3.1-/-. Expression of KCa3.1 mRNA and protein was detected in all three layers of the human cornea. The KCa3.1-/- mice demonstrated significantly reduced corneal fibrosis and expression of pro-fibrotic marker genes such as collagen I and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), suggesting that KCa3.1 plays an important role corneal wound healing in vivo. Corneal scarring is due to aberrant activity of the transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) signaling pathway following traumatic, mechanical, infectious, or surgical injury. Altered TGFβ signaling cascade leads to downstream Smad (Suppressor of mothers against decapentaplegic) protein-mediated signaling events that regulate expression of extracellular matrix and myogenic proteins. These events lead to transdifferentiation of keratocytes into myofibroblasts through fibroblasts and often results in permanent corneal scarring. Hence, therapeutic targets that reduce transdifferentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts may provide a clinically relevant approach to treat corneal fibrosis and improve long-term visual outcomes. Smad7 protein regulates the functional effects of TGFβ signaling during corneal wound healing. We tested that targeted delivery of Smad7 using recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 5 (AAV5-Smad7) delivered to the corneal stroma can inhibit corneal haze post photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in vivo in a rabbit corneal injury model. We demonstrate that a single topical application of AAV5-Smad7 in rabbit cornea post-PRK led to a significant decrease in corneal haze and corneal fibrosis. Further, histopathology revealed lack of immune cell infiltration following AAV5-Smad7 gene transfer into the corneal stroma. Our data demonstrates that AAV5-Smad7 gene therapy is relatively safe with significant potential for the treatment of corneal disease currently resulting in fibrosis and impaired vision.
