The so-called Transport of Intensity Equation (TIE) phase retrieval technique is widely applied in light, x-ray and electron optics to reconstruct, e.g., refractive indices, electric and magnetic fields in solids. Here, we present a largely improved TIE reconstruction algorithm, which properly considers intensity variations as well as unknown boundary conditions in a finite difference implementation of the Transport of Intensity partial differential equation. That largely removes reconstruction artifacts encountered in state-of-the-art Poisson solvers of the TIE, and hence significantly increases the applicability of the technique.

We use ultrafast x-ray diffraction to quantify the transport of energy in laser-excited nanoscale Au/Ni bilayers. Electron transport and efficient electron-phonon coupling in Ni convert the laser-deposited energy in the conduction electrons within a few picoseconds into a strong non-equilibrium between hot Ni and cold Au phonons at the bilayer interface. Modeling of the subsequent equilibration dynamics within various two-temperature models confirms that for ultrathin Au films the thermal transport is dominated by phonons instead of conduction electrons because of the weak electron-phonon coupling in Au., Comment: 3 Figures

Let G be a finite group. Denote by \psi(G) the sum \psi(G)=\sum_{x\in G}|x| where |x| denotes the order of the element x, and by o(G) the quotient o(G)=\frac{\psi(G)}{|G|}. Confirming a conjecture posed by E.I. Khukhro, A. Moreto and M. Zarrin, we prove that if o(G)< o(A_5), then G is solvable.

The transition metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at $T_c=328$ K involving a small lattice distortion. Below $T_c$, a band gap at the center of its Brillouin zone increases up to about 0.35 eV. In this work, we study the electronic structure of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ in its low-temperature semiconducting phase, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$-edge. In addition to a weak fluorescence response, we observe a collection of intense Raman-like peaks that we attribute to electron-hole excitations. Using density functional theory calculations of its electronic band structure, we identify the main Raman-like peaks as interband transitions between valence and conduction bands. By performing angle-dependent RIXS measurements, we uncover the dispersion of these electron-hole excitations that allows us to extract the low-energy boundary of the electron-hole continuum. From the dispersion of the valence band measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we derive the effective mass of the lowest unoccupied conduction band., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review B

We demonstrate full control of acoustic and thermal periodic deformations at solid surfaces down to sub-nanosecond time scales and few-micrometer length scales via independent variation of the temporal and spatial phase of two optical transient grating (TG) excitations. For this purpose, we introduce an experimental setup that exerts control of the spatial phase of subsequent time-delayed TG excitations depending on their polarization state. Specific exemplary coherent control cases are discussed theoretically and corresponding experimental data are presented in which time-resolved x-ray reflectivity measures the spatiotemporal surface distortion of nanolayered heterostructures. Finally, we discuss examples where the application of our method may enable the control of functional material properties via tailored spatiotemporal strain fields., Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures

We combine ultrafast X-ray diffraction (UXRD) and time-resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) measurements to monitor the strain pulses in laser-excited TbFe2/Nb heterostructures. Spatial separation of the Nb detection layer from the laser excitation region allows for a background free characterization of the laser-generated strain pulses. We clearly observe symmetric bipolar strain pulses when the excited TbFe2 surface terminates the sample and a decomposition of the strain wavepacket into an asymmetric bipolar and a unipolar pulse, when a SiO2 glass capping layer covers the excited TbFe2 layer. The inverse magnetostriction of the temporally separated unipolar strain pulses in this sample leads to a MOKE signal that linearly depends on the strain pulse amplitude measured through UXRD. Linear chain model simulations accurately predict the timing and shape of UXRD and MOKE signals that are caused by the strain reflections from multiple interfaces in the heterostructure.

We measure the transient strain profile in a nanoscale multilayer system composed of Yttrium, Holmium and Niobium after laser excitation using ultrafast X-ray diffraction. The strain propagation through each layer is determined by transient changes of the material-specific Bragg angles. We experimentally derive the exponentially decreasing stress profile driving the strain wave and show that it closely matches the optical penetration depth. Below the Neel temperature of Ho, the optical excitation triggers negative thermal expansion, which is induced by a quasi-instantaneous contractive stress, and a second contractive stress contribution rising on a 12 ps timescale. These two timescales have recently been measured for the spin-disordering in Ho [Rettig et al, PRL 116, 257202 (2016)]. As a consequence we observe an unconventional bipolar strain pulse with an inverted sign travelling through the heterostructure.

Ultrafast heat transport in nanoscale metal multilayers is of great interest in the context of optically-induced demagnetization, remagnetization and switching. We investigate the structural response and the energy flow in the ultrathin double-layer system Gold (Au) on ferromagnetic Nickel (Ni) by ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD). The penetration depth of light exceeds the bilayer thickness, preventing unambiguous layer-specific information from optical probes. Even though the excitation pulse is incident from the Au side, we observe a very rapid heating of the Ni lattice, whereas the Au lattice initially remains cold; the subsequent heat transfer from Ni to the Au lattice is found to be two orders of magnitude slower than predicted by the conventional heat equation and much slower than electron-phonon coupling times in Au. Both observations are independent of the excitation wavelength, although for the same fluence 400nm light excites electrons in Au ten times more than 800nm light. Simple model calculations show that the different specific heat of electrons in Ni and Au as well as the different electron-phonon coupling rapidly force the majority of thermal energy into the Ni lattice. Our results show that femtosecond UXRD provides an experimental account of heat transport over single digit nanometer distances as the thermal framework for ultrafast spin dynamics.
