We compute the radiative ro-vibrational emission spectrum of H2 involving quasibound states via a simple numerical method of resolution of the Schr\"odinger equation by introducing a modifed effective molecular potential. The comparison of the eigenvalues obtained with our approximation and other theoretical methods based on scattering resonance properties is excellent. Electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole contributions are calculated and we confirm the previous computations of Forrey of the electric quadrupole transition Einstein coeffcients. The FUV continuum spectrum of many accreting pre-main sequence stars, Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTSs), does not continue smoothly from the well-studied Balmer continuum emission in the NUV, suggesting that additional processes contribute to the short-wavelength emission in these objects. The most notable spectral feature in the FUV continuum of some CTTSs is a broad emission approximately centered at 1600~��, which has been referred to as the "1600 A Bump". The origin of this feature remains unclear. We have assembled archival FUV spectra of 37 disk-hosting systems observed by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope}. Clear 1600 A Bump emission is observed above the smooth, underlying 1100-1800 A continuum spectrum in 19/37 Classical T Tauri disks in the HST sample, with the detection rate in transition disks (8/8) being much higher than in primordial or non-transition sources (11/29). We describe a spectral deconvolution analysis to separate the Bump (spanning 1490~--~1690 A) from the underlying FUV continuum, finding an average Bump luminosity, $L$(Bump7 x 10^{29} erg s^{-1}. We find that the 1600 A Bump is characterized by a peak wavelength of 1598.6 +/- 3.3 A. Contrary to previous studies, we find that this feature is inconsistent with models of H2 excited by electron-impact. We show that this Bump emits roughly 10-80% of the total fluorescent H2 luminosity for stars with well-defined Bump features. Energetically, this suggests that the carrier of the 1600 A Bump emission is powered by Ly-a photons. We argue that the most likely mechanism is Ly-a-driven dissociation of H2O in the inner disk, r < 2 AU. We demonstrate that non-thermally populated H2O fragments can qualitatively account for the observed emission (discrete and continuum), and find that the average Ly-a-driven H2O dissociation rate is 1.7x 10^{42} water molecules s^{-1}., 28 pages, 17 figures. We present new observations of the FUV (1100-2200 Angstrom) radiation field and the near- to mid-IR (3--13.5 micron) spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of T Tauri stars selected on the basis of bright molecular disks (GM Aur, DM Tau, LkCa15). In each source we find evidence for Ly alpha induced H2 fluorescence and an additional source of FUV continuum emission below 1700 Angstroms. Comparison of the FUV spectra to a model of H2 excitation suggests that the strong continuum emission is due to electron impact excitation of H2. The ultimate source of this excitation is likely X-ray irradiation which creates hot photo-electrons mixed in the molecular layer. Analysis of the SED of each object finds the presence of inner disk gaps with sizes of a few AU in each of these young (~1 Myr) stellar systems. We propose that the presence of strong H2 continuum emission and inner disk clearing are related by the increased penetration power of high energy photons in gas rich regions with low grain opacity., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

The far-ultraviolet (FUV; 912--1700 \AA) radiation field from accreting central stars in Classical T Tauri systems influences the disk chemistry during the period of giant planet formation. Previous efforts to measure the true stellar+accretion-generated FUV luminosity (both hot gas emission lines and continua) have been complicated by a combination of low-sensitivity and/or low-spectral resolution and did not include the contribution from the bright Ly$\alpha$ emission line. In this work, we present a high-resolution spectroscopic study of the FUV radiation fields of 16 T Tauri stars whose dust disks display a range of evolutionary states. We include reconstructed Ly$\alpha$ line profiles and remove atomic and molecular disk emission (from H$_{2}$ and CO fluorescence) to provide robust measurements of both the FUV continuum and hot gas lines (e.g., Ly$\alpha$, \ion{N}{5}, \ion{C}{4}, \ion{He}{2}) for an appreciable sample of T Tauri stars for the first time. We find that the flux of the typical Classical T Tauri Star FUV radiation field at 1 AU from the central star is $\sim$ 10$^{7}$ times the average interstellar radiation field. The Ly$\alpha$ emission line contributes an average of 88% of the total FUV flux, with the FUV continuum accounting for an average of 8%. Both the FUV continuum and Ly$\alpha$ flux are strongly correlated with \ion{C}{4} flux, suggesting that accretion processes dominate the production of both of these components. On average, only $\sim$ 0.5% of the total FUV flux is emitted between the Lyman limit (912 \AA) and the H$_{2}$ (0 -- 0) absorption band at 1110 \AA. The formation timescale and final architecture of exoplanetary systems are closely related to the properties of the molecular disks from which they form. Observations of the spatial distribution and lifetime of the molecular gas at planet-forming radii (r < 10 AU) are important for understanding the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. Towards this end, we present the largest spectrally resolved survey of H2 emission around low-mass pre-main sequence stars compiled to date. We use a combination of new and archival far-ultraviolet spectra from the COS and STIS instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope to sample 34 T Tauri stars (27 actively accreting CTTSs and 7 non-accreting WTTSs) with ages ranging from roughly 1-10 Myr. We observe fluorescent H2 emission, excited by LyA photons, in 100 of the accreting sources, including all of the transitional disks in our sample (CS Cha, DM Tau, GM Aur, UX Tau A, LkCa15, HD 135344B and TW Hya). The spatial distribution of the emitting gas is inferred from spectrally resolved H2 line profiles. Some of the emitting gas is produced in outflowing material, but the majority of H2 emission appears to originate in a rotating disk. For the disk-dominated targets, the H2 emission originates predominately at r < 3 AU. The direct study of molecular gas in inner protoplanetary disks is complicated by uncertainties in the spatial distribution of the gas, the time-variability of the source, and the comparison of observations across a wide range of wavelengths. Some of these challenges can be mitigated with far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. Using new observations obtained with the HST-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we measure column densities and rovibrational temperatures for CO and H2 observed on the line-of-sight through the AA Tauri circumstellar disk. CO A-X absorption bands are observed against the far-UV continuum. The CO absorption is characterized by log(N(^{12}CO)) = 17.5 +/- 0.5 cm^{-2} and T_rot(CO) = 500$^{+500}_{-200} K, although this rotational temperature may underestimate the local kinetic temperature of the CO-bearing gas. We also detect ^{13}CO in absorption with an isotopic ratio of ~20. We do not observe H2 absorption against the continuum; however, hot H2 (v > 0) is detected in absorption against the LyA emission line. We measure the column densities in eight individual rovibrational states, determining a total log(N(H2)) = 17.9^{+0.6}_{-0.3} cm^{-2} with a thermal temperature of T(H2) = 2500^{+800}_{-700} K. The high-temperature of the molecules, the relatively small H2 column density, and the high-inclination of the AA Tauri disk suggest that the absorbing gas resides in an inner disk atmosphere. If the H2 and CO are co-spatial within a molecular layer ~ 0.6 AU thick, this region is characterized by ~ 10^{5} cm^{-3} with an observed ratio of ~ 0.4. We also find evidence for a departure from a purely thermal H2 distribution, suggesting that excitation by continuum photons and H2 formation may be altering the level populations in the molecular gas., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Spectral line positions and emission probabilities of the B′ 1Σu+ → X 1Σg+ and D 1Πu → X 1Σg+ band systems of molecular hydrogen have been calculated by solving a system of four coupled Schrödinger equations. A great number of rotational lines, emitted by a low-pressure electric discharge in H2, have been identified from 122 nm down to 78 nm. All the 69 bands of the B′ 1Σu+ → X 1Σg+ system and many high-J lines of 145 bands of the D 1Πu → X 1Σg+ system are reported for the first time. Improved molecular constants are derived for the (unperturbed) electronic excited state D 1Πu−.

We analyze the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of 33 classical T Tauri stars (CTTS), including 20 new spectra obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Solar Blind Channel (ACS/SBC) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Of the sources, 28 are in the ~1 Myr old Taurus-Auriga complex or Orion Molecular Cloud, 4 in the 8-10 Myr old Orion OB1a complex and one, TW Hya, in the 10 Myr old TW Hydrae Association. We also obtained FUV ACS/SBC spectra of 10 non-accreting sources surrounded by debris disks with ages between 10 and 125 Myr. We use a feature in the FUV spectra due mostly to electron impact excitation of \h2 to study the evolution of the gas in the inner disk. We find that the \h2 feature is absent in non-accreting sources, but is detected in the spectra of CTTS and correlates with accretion luminosity. Since all young stars have active chromospheres which produce strong X-ray and UV emission capable of exciting \h2 in the disk, the fact that the non-accreting sources show no \h2 emission implies that the \h2 gas in the inner disk has dissipated in the non-accreting sources, although dust (and possibly gas) remains at larger radii. Using the flux at 1600 {\AA}, we estimate that the column density of \h2 left in the inner regions of the debris disks in our sample is less than ~ 3x10^-6 g cm^-2, nine orders of magnitude below the surface density of the minimum mass solar nebula at 1 AU., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJL

For Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTSs), the resonance lines of N V, Si IV, and C IV, as well as the He II 1640 A line, act as diagnostics of the accretion process. Here we assemble a large high-resolution dataset of these lines in CTTSs and Weak T Tauri Stars (WTTSs). We present data for 35 stars: one Herbig Ae star, 28 CTTSs, and 6 WTTSs. We decompose the C IV and He II lines into broad and narrow Gaussian components (BC & NC). The most common (50 %) C IV line morphology in CTTSs is that of a low-velocity NC together with a redshifted BC. The velocity centroids of the BCs and NCs are such that V_BC > 4 * V_NC, consistent with the predictions of the accretion shock model, in at most 12 out of 22 CTTSs. We do not find evidence of the post-shock becoming buried in the stellar photosphere due to the pressure of the accretion flow. The He II CTTSs lines are generally symmetric and narrow, less redshifted than the CTTSs C IV lines, by ~10 km/sec. The flux in the BC of the He II line is small compared to that of the C IV line, consistent with models of the pre-shock column emission. The observations are consistent with the presence of multiple accretion columns with different densities or with accretion models that predict a slow-moving, low-density region in the periphery of the accretion column. For HN Tau A and RW Aur A, most of the C IV line is blueshifted suggesting that the C IV emission is produced by shocks within outflow jets. In our sample, the Herbig Ae star DX Cha is the only object for which we find a P-Cygni profile in the C IV line, which argues for the presence of a hot (10^5 K) wind. For the overall sample, the Si IV and N V line luminosities are correlated with the C IV line luminosities, although the relationship between Si IV and C IV shows large scatter about a linear relationship and suggests that TW Hya, V4046 Sgr, AA Tau, DF Tau, GM Aur, and V1190 Sco are silicon-poor., Accepted in the ApJSS. 52 pages, 9 tables, 20 figures

Young stars surrounded by disks with very low mass accretion rates are likely in the final stages of inner disk evolution and therefore particularly interesting to study. We present ultraviolet (UV) observations of the ~5-9 Myr old stars RECX-1 and RECX-11, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as optical and near-infrared spectroscopic observations. The two stars have similar levels of near-UV emission, although spectroscopic evidence indicates that RECX-11 is accreting and RECX-1 is not. The line profiles of Hα and He I λ10830 in RECX-11 show both broad and narrow redshifted absorption components that vary with time, revealing the complexity of the accretion flows. We show that accretion indicators commonly used to measure mass accretion rates, e.g., U-band excess luminosity or the Ca II triplet line luminosity, are unreliable for low accretors, at least in the middle K spectral range. Using RECX-1 as a template for the intrinsic level of photospheric and chromospheric emission, we determine an upper limit of 3 × 10^(–10) M_☉ yr–1 for RECX-11. At this low accretion rate, recent photoevaporation models predict that an inner hole should have developed in the disk. However, the spectral energy distribution of RECX-11 shows fluxes comparable to the median of Taurus in the near-infrared, indicating that substantial dust remains. Fluorescent H2 emission lines formed in the innermost disk are observed in RECX-11, showing that gas is present in the inner disk, along with the dust.

We exploit the high sensitivity and moderate spectral resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph to detect far-ultraviolet (UV) spectral features of carbon monoxide (CO) present in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks for the first time. We present spectra of the classical T Tauri stars HN Tau, RECX-11, and V4046 Sgr, representative of a range of CO radiative processes. HN Tau shows CO bands in absorption against the accretion continuum. The CO absorption most likely arises in warm inner disk gas. We measure a CO column density and rotational excitation temperature of N(CO) = (2 ± 1) × 1017 cm−2 and T rot(CO) 500 ± 200 K for the absorbing gas. We also detect CO A–X band emission in RECX-11 and V4046 Sgr, excited by UV line photons, predominantly H i Lyα. All three objects show emission from CO bands at λ > 1560 Å, which may be excited by a combination of UV photons and collisions with non-thermal electrons. In previous observations these emission processes were not accounted for due to blending with emission from the accretion shock, collisionally excited H2, and photo-excited H2, all of which appeared as a “continuum” whose components could not be separated. The CO emission spectrum is strongly dependent upon the shape of the incident stellar Lyα emission profile. We find CO parameters in the range: N(CO) ∼ 1018–1019 cm−2, T rot(CO) ≳ 300 K for the Lyα-pumped emission. We combine these results with recent work on photo-excited and collisionally excited H2 emission, concluding that the observations of UV-emitting CO and H2 are consistent with a common spatial origin. We suggest that the CO/H2 ratio (≡ N(CO)/N(H2)) in the inner disk is ∼1, a transition between the much lower interstellar value and the higher value observed in solar system comets today, a result that will require future observational and theoretical study to confirm.

Ratios of emission probabilities of rotational lines of the Lyman and Werner band systems, B 1∑+u →X 1∑+g and C 1∏u →X1∑+g, respectively, are calculated by different methods. These theoretical ratios are compared to the experimental intensity ratios of about a hundred lines selected from a vacuum ultraviolet emission spectrum whose intensity is investigated for the first time at high resolution. The computation permits to compare two ways of solving a system of two coupled equations with discrete eigenvalues. In most cases the effect of the mutual rotational perturbation between B and C states is found significant on the ratio of P and R line intensities. Ambiguity in labeling a few B and C levels is discussed.

We calculate free‐bound two‐dimensional Franck‐Condon factors for a molecule HXD with constant angle HXD. We assume separability into normal modes, but the normal modes are different for the attractive and the repulsive potential surfaces. These Franck‐Condon factors can be related to the linewidth of a predissociated level and to the relative probability of dissociation into the channel H+XD or the channel D+XH. Classically, we can predict that the Franck‐Condon factor will be a maximum as a function of energy if one of the turning points (for vibration in the bound state) happens to be on the repulsive surface at that energy; furthermore, the location of this turning point on the repulsive surface determines the isotope effect, which can be favorable to either D+XH or H+XD. Our two‐dimensional study of the O‐ν and ν‐0 levels shows that these classical predictions are correct, in contrast to the results obtained using a one‐dimensional model; in the latter case, strong enhancement of the Franck‐Condon factors can occur through interference effects that cannot be predicted classically; interference effects do not show up in the two‐dimensional calculation. For the 3–3, 2–2, and 3–2 levels, classical predictions are in rough agreement with the calculations, but we observe strong enhancement of the Franck‐Condon factors for certain relative positions of the two surfaces. In conclusion, interference effects do exist for two‐dimensional Franck‐Condon factors, though they disappear for 0‐ν and ν‐0 levels.
