1. On the periodic decompositions of multidimensional configurations

Abstract

We consider $d$-dimensional configurations, that is, colorings of the $d$-dimensional integer grid $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with finitely many colors. Moreover, we interpret the colors as integers so that configurations are functions $\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{Z}$ of finite range. We say that such function is $k$-periodic if it is invariant under translations in $k$ linearly independent directions. It is known that if a configuration has a non-trivial annihilator, that is, if some non-trivial linear combination of its translations is the zero function, then it is a sum of finitely many periodic functions. This result is known as the periodic decomposition theorem. We prove two different improvements of it. The first improvement gives a characterization on annihilators of a configuration to guarantee the $k$-periodicity of the functions in its periodic decomposition -- for any $k$. The periodic decomposition theorem is then a special case of this result with $k=1$. The second improvement concerns so called sparse configurations for which the number of non-zero values in patterns grows at most linearly with respect to the diameter of the pattern. We prove that a sparse configuration with a non-trivial annihilator is a sum of finitely many periodic fibers where a fiber means a function whose non-zero values lie on a unique line., Comment: 17 pages

2. Optimal local identifying and local locating-dominating codes

Abstract

We introduce two new classes of covering codes in graphs for every positive integer $r$. These new codes are called local $r$-identifying and local $r$-locating-dominating codes and they are derived from $r$-identifying and $r$-locating-dominating codes, respectively. We study the sizes of optimal local 1-identifying codes in binary hypercubes. We obtain lower and upper bounds that are asymptotically tight. Together the bounds show that the cost of changing covering codes into local 1-identifying codes is negligible. For some small $n$ optimal constructions are obtained. Moreover, the upper bound is obtained by a linear code construction. Also, we study the densities of optimal local 1-identifying codes and local 1-locating-dominating codes in the infinite square grid, the hexagonal grid, the triangular grid, and the king grid. 3. On forced periodicity of perfect colorings

Abstract

We study forced periodicity of two-dimensional configurations under certain constraints and use an algebraic approach to multidimensional symbolic dynamics in which $d$-dimensional configurations and finite patterns are presented as formal power series and Laurent polynomials, respectively, in $d$ variables. We consider perfect colorings that are configurations such that the number of points of a given color in the neighborhood of any point depends only on the color of the point for some fixed relative neighborhood, and we show that by choosing the alphabet suitably any perfect coloring has a non-trivial annihilator, that is, there exists a Laurent polynomial whose formal product with the power series presenting the perfect coloring is zero. Using known results we obtain a sufficient condition for forced periodicity of two-dimensional perfect colorings. As corollaries of this result we get simple new proofs for known results of forced periodicity on the square and the triangular grids. Moreover, we obtain a new result concerning forced periodicity of perfect colorings in the king grid. We also consider perfect colorings of a particularly simple type: configurations that have low abelian complexity with respect to some shape, and we generalize a result that gives a sufficient condition for such configurations to be necessarily periodic. 4. On perfect coverings of two-dimensional grids

Abstract

We study perfect multiple coverings in translation invariant graphs with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}^2$ using an algebraic approach. In this approach we consider any such covering as a two-dimensional binary configuration which we then express as a two-variate formal power series. Using known results, we conclude that any perfect multiple covering has a non-trivial periodizer, that is, there exists a non-zero polynomial whose formal product with the power series presenting the covering is a two-periodic configuration. If a non-trivial periodizer has line polynomial factors in at most one direction, then the configuration is known to be periodic. Using this result, we find many setups where perfect multiple coverings of infinite grids are necessarily periodic. Abstract

We present a real-time deep learning framework for video-based facial performance capture -- the dense 3D tracking of an actor's face given a monocular video. Our pipeline begins with accurately capturing a subject using a high-end production facial capture pipeline based on multi-view stereo tracking and artist-enhanced animations. With 5-10 minutes of captured footage, we train a convolutional neural network to produce high-quality output, including self-occluded regions, from a monocular video sequence of that subject. Since this 3D facial performance capture is fully automated, our system can drastically reduce the amount of labor involved in the development of modern narrative-driven video games or films involving realistic digital doubles of actors and potentially hours of animated dialogue per character. We compare our results with several state-of-the-art monocular real-time facial capture techniques and demonstrate compelling animation inference in challenging areas such as eyes and lips., Comment: Final SCA 2017 version

In older patients, topical treatments may be preferred over systemic treatments, but data specific to the older population are scarce.Methods: We conducted pooled analyses of multiple clinical trials to evaluate efficacy and safety of capsaicin patch in older patients. The analysis of efficacy included four randomized, double-blind, 12-week studies with similar trial design comparing a single treatment of capsaicin 179 mg cutaneous patch vs low-dose control patch in post-herpetic neuralgia. For the safety evaluation, data were pooled from 18 interventional studies in which capsaicin patch was used in PNP with varying etiologies.Results: Capsaicin patch had similar analgesic efficacy in elderly (n=582) and non-elderly patients (n=545) in terms of change from baseline to 2– 12 weeks in the 11-point numeric pain rating scale (NPRS) score for average pain over the previous 24 hours. In both age groups, decrease in NPRS score was significantly greater with capsaicin patch vs control. Older patients treated with capsaicin patch were significantly more likely than those in the control group to achieve responder status (ie mean decrease in NPRS score from baseline to week 2– 12 of at least 30% or ≥ 2 points): 36.1% vs 27.1% (odds ratio [OR] [95% CI] 1.52 [1.06, 2.18]; P

Abstract

A search for physics beyond the standard model in the final state with two same-flavour leptons (electrons or muons) and two quarks produced in protonâproton collisions at s=13TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3fbâ1. The observed data are in good agreement with the standard model background prediction. The results of the measurement are interpreted in the framework of a recently proposed model in which a heavy Majorana neutrino, Nâ, stems from a composite-fermion scenario. Exclusion limits are set for the first time on the mass of the heavy composite Majorana neutrino, mNâ, and the compositeness scale Î. For the case mNâ=Î, the existence of Ne (Nμ) is excluded for masses up to 4.60 (4.70)âTeV at 95% confidence level. Keywords: CMS, Exotica

Abstract

A search is performed for anomalous interactions of the recently discovered Higgs boson using matrix element techniques with the information from its decay to four leptons and from associated Higgs boson production with two quark jets in either vector boson fusion or associated production with a vector boson. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 38.6fbâ1. Abstract

In this article, we present a robust new hybrid algorithm combining successive compression, chaotic encryption, and blind watermarking images based on the quaternionic wavelets transform (QWT) to ensure the fast, simple and secure transfer of digital data. The calculations of the various evaluation parameters were carried out with the aim of determining the robustness of our algorithm against certain attacks. The results obtained of the reconstructed images before and after attacks of the compressed-encrypted-watermarked images are appreciated by calculating the evaluation parameters values and by the human visual system. The application of this hybrid algorithm on CFA images al-lowed us to obtain a stand-alone transmission system and ensure the integrity of digital data.  Â

Abstract

This study aims to contribute to improve the knowledge on the setting of the Irbiben granites, located south of the gold deposit of this locality (Tagragra d'Akka buttonhole, Anti-Atlas, Morocco). The petrographic characterization showed leucocratic porphyry rocks, with a mineralogy dominated by quartz and phenocrysts of plagioclase, alkali feldspars of sometimes centimetric size as well as very small sulphides of metallic luster. Two generations of quartz have been identified: a QIquartz with undulating extinction phenocrysts testifying to an episode of deformation orchestrated in this inlier, and a QII quartz with more rounded and limpid minerals indicating an intense silicification. Plagioclase and alkali feldspars are deeply altered to sericite and epidote. Geochemical characterization classifies these rocks as calc-alkaline series granites, rich in potassium, with a peraluminous character indicating their crustal origin. Their arc geochemical signature, Ba enrichment, and negative Nb, Ti, and P anomalies are characteristic of a subduction zone. This subduction could be associated with an episode of convergence between an oceanic lithosphere located in the north and the West African craton in the south, as shown by the proposed geodynamic model.

Abstract

In arid and semi-arid climates characterized by low rainfall with a great annual and inter-annual irregularity, drought can occur at any time inducing large losses in crop yield. Leaf rolling is one of the adaptive morphological responses to the water deficit observed in a number of species including cereals. It reduces the leaf area exposed to sunlight and transpiration. The aim of the present work was to characterize the agronomical impact of water stress on a set of 16 Moroccan durum wheat varieties and to examine the possible correlations between leaf rolling and agronomic performances of these varieties. Experiments were conducted during three cropping seasons on a soil with a clay-loam texture at Tamellalet, in Marrakech region. The water stress was applied for one week to the studied varieties at tillering, and the degree of leaf rolling was determined at the end of the stress period. Strong differences between the varieties in the degree of leaf rolling upon water stress and in the ability to counteract drought were observed. Varieties displaying high leaf rolling showed less reduction in the yield components (number of ears per plant, number of grains per ear and weight of grains). The strong correlation observed between the degree of leaf rolling and maintaining of agronomic performance suggests that leaf rolling can be a criterion for water stress tolerance in durum wheat.
