The aim of this study was to detect the concentrations of PCSK9 in various subclinical stages of atherosclerosis and to highlight its relationship with inflammation. One hundred and fifty-nine healthy patients were divided into three groups, based on the extent of atherosclerotic changes in the carotid artery: a group without identifiable atherosclerosis, cIMT>75‰ and an asymptomatic plaque group. The PCSK9 was measured by ELISA and hsCRP by the immunoturbidimetric method. Vascular changes were identified by a carotid ultrasound. PCSK9 was elevated, when comparing the healthy group with the cIMT>75‰ group; however, no significant increase was detected between cIMT>75‰ and the asymptomatic plaque group. A positive linear correlation of the PCSK9 concentration and atherosclerotic changes was found; however, after the re-analysis in each group, this correlation persisted only in the group with still normal values. Additionally, a significant linear correlation was found between the PCSK9 concentrations and lipid parameters. However, no significant association was found with hsCRP. PCSK9 was found to be elevated only in cIMT>75‰, but not in the later plaque stage. A linear correlation of PCSK9 values was detected only in the group with still reference values. Based on this fact, we assumed the direct linear role of PCSK9 in initiating atherosclerosis; however, in the later phases, the relationship, which highlights other risk factors such as inflammation, is not linear.

Ischemic-reperfusion injury of the small intestine is an acute clinical condition with high mortality rate. This study describes the changes in levels of phenylalanine and tryptophan metabolites in intestinal homogenates and urine samples of Wistar male rats after 60 minutes of mesenteric ischemia and different reperfusion periods (1, 24, 30 hours) in comparison with a control group without the ischemia. The ischemic-reperfusion injury was quantified by the histopathological injury index. The effect of 10% dietary flaxseed fed for 3 and 6 weeks on serum hormone levels of fattening gilts, the fatty acid (FA) follicular fluid (FF) composition of small and large antral follicles, and the steroidogenesis and IGF-I secretion by isolated small antral follicles and their response to regulatory hormones (LH, FSH, IGF-I) was studied using immunoassay and gas chromatography analyses. Both supplemental periods increased levels of P4 and IGF-I in blood serum. A shorter period inhibited steroidogenesis (P4, T, E2) and IGF-I secretion by small antral follicles, which was associated with decreased levels of monounsaturated FAs (MUFA) and preferred n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) metabolism. A longer period stimulated hormone secretion at elevated levels of saturated FAs (SFA) at the expense of MUFAs and PUFAs preferring the n-3 PUFA metabolism. Out of ovarian regulators, only LH and IGF-I were able to alter the secretion of steroids and IGF-I by small follicles of fattening pigs fed a basal diet. The effect of flaxseed on the secretion of follicular hormones after both supplemental periods was altered by all regulatory hormones in a dose-dependent manner. Introduction: Effective coping mechanisms and available support systems are essential to managing the disease and maintaining the mental health of women with breast cancer. It has been found that spirituality and religion can be an important supportive element in coping with cancer and its consequences. Aim: To analyse spiritual and religious (s/r) interventions provided by health care professionals to breast cancer patients, and their relationship to physical health, psychosocial, and spiritual outcomes. Methods: Integrative literature review of systematic literature reviews and/or meta-analysis was chosen. PubMed and Web of Science databases for the period 2013-2023 after entering the keywords "spiritual, religious, existential, positive psychology, mindfulness, interventions, breast cancer, cancer" in English were searched. Results: The review included 13 systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses (SRMA). Effect of mindfulness intervention was most frequently analysed. S/r interventions significantly associated with improvements in spiritual and existential well-being, quality of life and personal well-being, hope, optimism, cognitive functions and reductions of anxiety, depression, hopelessness, stress, and fatigue. Two SRMA found that s/r interventions were associated with improvements in cortisol levels, inflammatory cytokine activity, and lymphocyte function. Conclusion: The analysed studies showed that s/r interventions are associated with improved biological, psychosocial and spiritual outcomes, which supports the application of these interventions in clinical practice. The effect of combining probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus fermentum) with flaxseed (a source of n-3 PUFAs) on the lipid metabolism and long-chain fatty acid profile of conventional piglets after weaning was studied. The levels of total lipids and high-density lipoproteins cholesterol decreased from Day 7 post-weaning, whereas levels of low-density lipoproteins cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides did not change significantly in piglets with supplemented diet. The levels of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increased seven days post-weaning; however, the levels of dihomogamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid (AA) were lower and linoleic acid (LA) higher in synbioticsfed piglets compared with controls. This study demonstrates the efficacy of conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA, where delta-6-desaturase was predominantly used for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid synthesis from ALA at the expense of n-6 PUFAs from LA, which caused rapid increase in EPA/AA ratio on Day 14 after weaning. Combination of probiotic cheese and flaxseed is a good dietary supplement for piglets before weaning, helping them to adapt to change in diet more easily by regulating changes in lipid metabolism and vitality, and reducing the likelihood of chronic diseases. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of the different probiotic strains, Lactobacillus plantarum LS/07 and Lactobacillus plantarum Biocenol LP96, on lipid metabolism and body weight in rats fed a high fat diet. Compared with the high fat diet group, the results showed that Lactobacillus plantarum LS/07 reduced serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, but Lactobacillus plantarum Biocenol LP96 decreased triglycerides and VLDL, while there was no change in the serum HDL level and liver lipids. Both probiotic strains lowered total bile acids in serum. Our strains have no significant change in body weight, gain weight, and body fat. These findings indicate that the effect of lactobacilli on lipid metabolism may differ among strains and that the Lactobacillus plantarum LS/07 and Lactobacillus plantarum Biocenol LP96 can be used to improve lipid profile and can contribute to a healthier bowel microbial balance.
