Abstract

Monocular camera sensors are vital to intelligent vehicle operation and automated driving assistance and are also heavily employed in traffic control infrastructure. Calibrating the monocular camera, though, is time-consuming and often requires significant manual intervention. In this work, we present an extrinsic camera calibration approach that automatizes the parameter estimation by utilizing semantic segmentation information from images and point clouds. Our approach relies on a coarse initial measurement of the camera pose and builds on lidar sensors mounted on a vehicle with high-precision localization to capture a point cloud of the camera environment. Afterward, a mapping between the camera and world coordinate spaces is obtained by performing a lidar-to-camera registration of the semantically segmented sensor data. We evaluate our method on simulated and real-world data to demonstrate low error measurements in the calibration results. Abstract

Reliable tracking algorithms are essential for automated driving. However, the existing consistency measures are not sufficient to meet the increasing safety demands in the automotive sector. Therefore, this work presents a novel method for self-assessment of single-object tracking in clutter based on Kalman filtering and subjective logic. A key feature of the approach is that it additionally provides a measure of the collected statistical evidence in its online reliability scores. In this way, various aspects of reliability, such as the correctness of the assumed measurement noise, detection probability, and clutter rate, can be monitored in addition to the overall assessment based on the available evidence. Here, we present a mathematical derivation of the reference distribution used in our self-assessment module for our studied problem. Moreover, we introduce a formula that describes how a threshold should be chosen for the degree of conflict, the subjective logic comparison measure used for the reliability decision making. Our approach is evaluated in a challenging simulation scenario designed to model adverse weather conditions. 24. Motion Planning for Connected Automated Vehicles at Occluded Intersections With Infrastructure Sensors

Abstract

Motion planning at urban intersections that accounts for the situation context, handles occlusions, and deals with measurement and prediction uncertainty is a major challenge on the way to urban automated driving. In this work, we address this challenge with a sampling-based optimization approach. For this, we formulate an optimal control problem that optimizes for low risk and high passenger comfort. The risk is calculated on the basis of the perception information and the respective uncertainty using a risk model. The risk model combines set-based methods and probabilistic approaches. Thus, the approach provides safety guarantees in a probabilistic sense, while for a vanishing risk, the formal safety guarantees of the set-based methods are inherited. By exploring all available behavior options, our approach solves decision making and longitudinal trajectory planning in one step. The available behavior options are provided by a formal representation of the situation context, which is also used to reduce calculation efforts. Occlusions are resolved using the external perception of infrastructure-mounted sensors. Yet, instead of merging external and ego perception with track-to-track fusion, the information is used in parallel. Abstract

Autonomous vehicles need precise knowledge on dynamic objects in their surroundings. Especially in urban areas with many objects and possible occlusions, an infrastructure system based on a multi-sensor setup can provide the required environment model for the vehicles. Previously, we have published a concept of object reference points (e.g. the corners of an object), which allows for generic sensor "plug and play" interfaces and relatively cheap sensors. This paper describes a novel method to additionally incorporate multiple hypotheses for fusing the measurements of the object reference points using an extension to the previously presented Labeled Multi-Bernoulli (LMB) filter. In contrast to the previous work, this approach improves the tracking quality in the cases where the correct association of the measurement and the object reference point is unknown. Furthermore, this paper identifies options based on physical models to sort out inconsistent and unfeasible associations at an early stage in order to keep the method computationally tractable for real-time applications. The method is evaluated on simulations as well as on real scenarios. In comparison to comparable methods, the proposed approach shows a considerable performance increase, especially the number of non-continuous tracks is decreased significantly.

Abstract

Abstract Background The classic neuritic β-amyloid plaque of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is typically associated with activated microglia and neuroinflammation. Similarly, cerebrovascular β-amyloid (Aβ) deposits are surrounded by perivascular macrophages. Both observations indicate a contribution of the mononuclear phagocyte system to the development of β-amyloid. Methods Human CD14-positive mononuclear phagocytes were isolated from EDTA-anticoagulated blood by magnetic activated cell sorting. After a cultivation period of 72 hours in serum-free medium we assessed the protein levels of amyloid precursor protein (APP) as well as the patterns and the amounts of released Aβ peptides by ELISA or one-dimensional and two-dimensional urea-based SDS-PAGE followed by western immunoblotting. Results We observed strong and significant increases in Aβ peptide release upon phagocytosis of acetylated low density lipoprotein (acLDL) or polystyrene beads and also after activation of the CD14/TLR4 pathway by stimulation with LPS. The proportion of released N-terminally truncated Aβ variants was increased after stimulation with polystyrene beads and acLDL but not after stimulation with LPS. Furthermore, strong shifts in the proportions of single Aβ1-40 and Aβ2-40 variants were detected resulting in a stimulus-specific Aβ signature. The increased release of Aβ peptides was accompanied by elevated levels of full length APP in the cells. The maturation state of APP was correlated with the release of N-terminally truncated Aβ peptides. Conclusions These findings indicate that mononuclear phagocytes potentially contribute to the various N-truncated Aβ variants found in AD β-amyloid plaques, especially under neuroinflammatory conditions.

Abstract

Sensor calibration usually is a time consuming yet important task. While classical approaches are sensor-specific and often need calibration targets as well as a widely overlapping field of view (FOV), within this work, a cooperative intelligent vehicle is used as callibration target. The vehicleis detected in the sensor frame and then matched with the information received from the cooperative awareness messagessend by the coperative intelligent vehicle. The presented algorithm is fully automated as well as sensor-independent, relying only on a very common set of assumptions. Due to the direct registration on the world frame, no overlapping FOV is necessary. The algorithm is evaluated through experiment for four laserscanners as well as one pair of stereo cameras showing a repetition error within the measurement uncertainty of the sensors. Abstract

Urban intersections put high demands on fully automated vehicles, in particular, if occlusion occurs. In order to resolve such and support vehicles in unclear situations, a popular approach is the utilization of additional information from infrastructure-based sensing systems. However, a widespread use of such systems is circumvented by their complexity and thus, high costs. Within this paper, a generic interface is proposed, which enables a huge variety of sensors to be connected. The sensors are only required to measure very few features of the objects, if multiple distributed sensors with different viewing directions are available. Furthermore, a Labeled Multi-Bernoulli (LMB) filter is presented, which can not only handle such measurements, but also infers missing object information about the objects' extents. The approach is evaluated on simulations and demonstrated on a real-world infrastructure setup.

Abstract

Introduction Interferential current (IFC) has been studied in several clinical trials for the treatment of bowel motility disorders, most often in children. However, only moderate effects are reported, and in contrast to IFC, the so-called placebo application is indiscernible. The mechanisms and neuroanatomic points of action remain elusive. Therefore, this therapy remains being questioned. Methods To gain objective experimental data about IFC stimulation, we examined this method ex vivo in an isolated perfused porcine rectum including the mesorectum. To elucidate the role of plexus nerve fibers and enteric ganglia, we performed IFC stimulation also in the presence of tetrodotoxin (TTX) or hexamethonium (HXN). We applied the commonly used stimulation modes with a beat frequency sweeping between 5 and 25 Hz (IFCd5–25) and 80 and 150 Hz (IFCd80–150). We monitored intraluminal pressure and motility by online barometry and video recording, respectively. Motor activity, reflected by changes in the intraluminal pressure (cm H2 O·s−1) and longitudinal movements (pixels·s−1), was quantified over time as root mean squares (RMSs). Results After IFCd5–25 , we observed a 30% increase in the rectal motility in the pressure changes which was sustained over 30 minutes post-stimulation (p < 0.02); only a minor effect was detected for IFCd80–150. Both TTX and HTX abolished the stimulation. This suggests neuronal modulation. Conclusion IFCd5–25 stimulates rectal motor activity in the isolated perfused porcine rectum. Ganglia in the enteric nervous system are modulated to allow increased activity for at least 30 minutes. 49. Interplay between COVID-19 and Secukinumab treatment in Spondylarthritis patients during the omicron surge: a retrospective cohort study.

Abstract

The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the relationship between Corona Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Secukinumab treatment in patients with Spondylarthritis (SpA) in China during the omicron surge. Researchers retrieved 1018 medical records of Secukinumab-treated patients between January 2020 and January 2023 from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Out of these, 190 SpA patients from the rheumatology clinic were selected for the study. Guided phone questionnaires were administered by research staff to collect baseline characteristics, SpA disease status, and COVID-19 clinical outcomes. Cohabitants served as the control group and provided COVID-19 related data. Of the 190 potential SpA patients, 122 (66%) completed the questionnaire via phone, along with 259 cohabitants. 84.4% of SpA patients were diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), and 15.6% were diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA). The rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 83.6% in the Secukinumab group and 88.8% in the cohabitants control group, with no significant difference (OR = 0.684, CI 0.366–1.275). One instance of severe COVID-19 was observed in the Secukinumab group, while two were identified in the cohabitants control group. Patients in the Secukinumab group had less time with fever caused by COVID-19 (p = 0.004). Discontinuing Secukinumab after SARS-CoV-2 infection did not significantly affect the course of COVID-19 or worsen SpA status according to our data. Our study suggests that administering Secukinumab to SpA patients does not increase their susceptibility to contracting SARS-CoV-2, and may have a positive effect on the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
