BackgroundIn recent years large bibliographic databases have made much of the published literature of biology available for searches. However, the capabilities of the search engines integrated into these databases for text-based bibliographic searches are limited. To enable searches that deliver the results expected by comparative anatomists, an underlying logical structure known as an ontology is required.Development and testing of the ontologyHere we present the Mammalian Feeding Muscle Ontology (MFMO), a multi-species ontology focused on anatomical structures that participate in feeding and other oral/pharyngeal behaviors. A unique feature of the MFMO is that a simple, computable, definition of each muscle, which includes its attachments and innervation, is true across mammals. This construction mirrors the logical foundation of comparative anatomy and permits searches using language familiar to biologists. Further, it provides a template for muscles that will be useful in extending any anatomy ontology. The MFMO is developed to support the Feeding Experiments End-User Database Project (FEED, https://feedexp.org/), a publicly-available, online repository for physiological data collected from in vivo studies of feeding (e.g., mastication, biting, swallowing) in mammals. Currently the MFMO is integrated into FEED and also into two literature-specific implementations of Textpresso, a text-mining system that facilitates powerful searches of a corpus of scientific publications. We evaluate the MFMO by asking questions that test the ability of the ontology to return appropriate answers (competency questions). We compare the results of queries of the MFMO to results from similar searches in PubMed and Google Scholar.Results and significanceOur tests demonstrate that the MFMO is competent to answer queries formed in the common language of comparative anatomy, but PubMed and Google Scholar are not. Overall, our results show that by incorporating anatomical ontologies into searches, an expanded and anatomically comprehensive set of results can be obtained. The broader scientific and publishing communities should consider taking up the challenge of semantically enabled search capabilities.

In this study of masticatory maturation, the ontogeny of the histochemical fiber type composition of musculus masseter is examined in the omnivorous miniature swine (Sus scrofa). Fiber type characteristics are interpreted by comparison with electromyography (EMG) recorded during feeding behavior. Similar to locomotion studies, the results suggest a correspondence between the composition and arrangement of motor units and their recruitment pattern. Serial sections of masseter muscles from 10 minipigs, ranging from 2 weeks to slightly over 1 year of age, were stained for myosin adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase) activity to distinguish slow-twitch from fast-twitch fibers, and for nicotinamide adenosine dehydrogenase-tetrazolium reductase to assess the aerobic capacity of the same fibers. Although maintaining a uniformly high aerobic capacity throughout ontogeny and in adult animals, a transition is observed in the relative proportions of fast- and slow-twitch fibers. The primarily fast-twitch neonatal pig masseter eventually comprises approximately 25-30% slow-twitch fibers in adults, with a higher predominance of slow fibers in the deep (vs. superficial) and anterior (vs. posterior) regions of the muscle. Furthermore, while individual fibers of adult masseters generally stain for either alkaline- or acid-stable mATPase activity, a substantial proportion of cells in developing animals exhibits the presence of both isozymes. EMG results indicate functional heterogeneity within the masseter of adult pigs. During chewing, when pig chow is replaced by cracked corn, EMG activity in the deep portion of the muscle either decreases or increases slightly. In the superficial portion, however, muscle amplitudes become dramatically higher for corn, surpassing levels generated for chewing the less obdurate chow. These results are consistent with a behavioral transition from neonatal suckling to sustained mastication of foods of more complex textures eaten by adult pigs. The relationship between these fiber type and EMG results for pig masseter corresponds to those pertaining to motor unit recruitment in the extensor muscles of locomotion. Implications of this work for the evolutionary morphology of mastication also are discussed. Keywords: electromyography; fast-twitch; slow-twitch; physiology; feeding; growth

The skull is distinguished from other parts of the skeleton by its composite construction. The sutures between bony elements provide for interstitial growth of the cranium, but at the same time they alter the transmission of stress and strain through the skull. Strain gages were bonded to the frontal and parietal bones of miniature pigs and across the interfrontal, interparietal and coronal sutures. Strains were recorded 1) during natural mastication in conjunction with electromyographic activity from the jaw muscles and 2) during stimulation of various cranial muscles in anesthetized animals. Vault sutures exhibited vastly higher strains than did the adjoining bones. Further, bone strain primarily reflected torsion of the braincase set up by asymmetrical muscle contraction; the tensile axis alternated between +45 degrees and -45 degrees depending on which diagonal masseter/temporalis pair was most active. However, suture strains were not related to overall torsion but instead were responses to local muscle actions. Only the coronal suture showed significant strain (tension) during jaw opening; this was caused by the contraction of neck muscles. All sutures showed strain during jaw closing, but polarity depended on the pattern of muscle usage. For example, masseter contraction tensed the coronal suture and the anterior part of the interfrontal suture, whereas the temporalis caused compression in these locations. Peak tensile strains were larger than peak compressive strains. Histology suggested that the skull is bent at the sutures, with the ectocranial surface tensed and the endocranial surface predominantly compressed. Collectively, these results indicate that skulls with patent sutures should be analyzed as complexes of independent parts rather than solid structures. In contrast to adult humans, the epiglottis of other mammals and infant humans is situated close to the soft palate. It has been argued that this posture is maintained during swallowing, with food passing laterally around an intact airway. To test this supposition, the movement of the epiglottis in two contrasting mammalian species, pigs and ferrets, was studied by placing radiopaque markers on the epiglottis and soft palate. Swallowing was observed with videofiuoroscopy while the animals were feeding on hard and soft foods, liquids, and food mixed with barium sulfate. Analysis of the images showed that bolus formation and downward movement of the epiglottis away from the soft palate were unvarying phenomena in both animals for all tested foods. The duration of the epiglottic movement was approximately 0.3 s for liquids and slightly longer for solids. Because swallowing never occurred past an upright epiglottis, the results of this study do not support the hypothesis that adult animals maintain a patent airway during swallowing. Instead, the epiglottis in nonhuman mammals downfolds similarly to that of adult humans during swallowing.

Aims: An animal study of functional biomechanics was under-taken to understand normal loading of the temporomandibular joint TM)] and to provide insight into the pathogenesis of TMJ disorders. Methods: Bone strain and ligamentous deformation were measured during mastication in 26 10-month-old minipigs. Half the subjects had undergone a surgical disruption of the left lateral capsular and disc attachments to the condyle 5 to 6 weeks previously. Rosette strain gauges were bonded to the left lateral surfaces of the squamosal bone near the TMJ, the candylar neck, and the mandibular corpus below the molar region. Differential variable reluctance transducers (DVRTs) were placed bilaterally in the lateral capsular tissue of the joints. Bone strains, ligamentous deformations, and the electromyographic activities of the masseters and lateral pterygoids were recorded during natural mastication. Results: In all animals on both working and balancing sides, mastication caused bone strains that were dominated by tension in the squamosal bone site and by compression in the other sites. Measurements from the DVRT revealed elongation of the lateral capsular tissue in the last phase of the power stroke and shortening in the initial phase of opening, which was almost simultaneous with the development of bone strain. Strain in the capsule ranged from 3 to 25%, with the strain of the balancing side exceeding that of the working side. The surgical disruption did not alter chewing side preference or bone strain, but a tendency toward more extensive ligamentous deformation on the intact side was observed. Furthermore, the ratio of masseter to lateral pterygoid activity was smaller on the disrupted side and larger on the intact side, in comparison to control pigs. Conclusion: Both osseous and ligamentous components of the TMJ are strained during mastication, and the latter are more deformed on the balancing side. Disruption of the lateral attachment had little effect on strain in the osseous components but appeared to increase strain in the capsule and to modify the balance of masticatory muscle activity.
