- Abstract
In this study, the novel mobile dynamometric platform, OREKA, was utilized to perform an extensive analysis of the centre of pressure behaviour during different tilt motion exercises. This platform is based on a parallel manipulator mechanism and can perform rotations around both horizontal axes and a vertical translation. A group of participants took part in an experimental campaign involving the completion of a set of exercises. The aim was to evaluate the platform’s potential practical application and investigate the impact of visual on-screen feedback on centre of pressure motion through multiple balance indicators. The use of the OREKA platform enables the study of the impact on a user’s balance control behaviour under different rotational perturbations, depending on the availability of real-time visual feedback on a screen. Furthermore, it presented data identifying postural control variations among clinically healthy individuals. These findings are fundamental to comprehending the dynamics of body balance. Further investigation is needed to explore these initial findings and fully unlock the potential of the OREKA platform for balance assessment methodologies.

- Abstract
As new wind farms are built, the best locations are becoming fewer and fewer. Therefore, the debate is currently focused on possible measures to make better use of the resource. While the major reason for the drop in efficiency of a wind farm is wind speed variability, aerodynamic losses in large turbine arrays can be significant, potentially leading to a drop in annual energy production of up to 20%. There are several methods under study on how to improve the performance of wind farms, among which are the variation of yaw angle or axial-induction-based control, which is based on varying the pitch of the wind turbine blades or varying the torque. This study provides a novel approach to the optimization of wake steering in wind farms via Bayesian Optimization. This way, if the upwind turbines are misaligned, their wakes may not directly affect the downstream turbines. Hence, increasing their power output and the output of the wind farm at the cost of lower power output in the upwind turbines. Therefore, this study chooses to develop a model to provide yaw angle variated optimizations. The model to be used is based on the Actuator Disk Model and Large Eddy Simulations. To this end, a validation of the model used is first carried out by comparing the results obtained with those described in Jiménez et al. (2009). Once the code has been validated, a study of the possible optimisation of an array of turbines is carried out.

These systems cover energy shortages at peak demand by storing energy generated at times of low demand. Reversible pumping systems are the perfect solution for energy generation regulation with respect to demand. This article discusses the optimal design of a reversible pumping station in terms of power input/output and mass of water capacity, as well as its way of generating/consuming electricity from the grid with a Model Predictive Control. In this design two cases are analyzed; an ideal case where there are no losses in the plant other than the performance of the equipment, and another case where friction losses exist depending on the design of the pipes.

- Abstract
Energy field has become a key sector in the world. Thermal systems have become increasingly more important in the energy field and due to this this project aims to make a step forward regarding the thermal system technology. The objective of this work is selecting a thermal device, a micro gas turbine in this case, and try to emulate its thermal behaviour. For doing so, a thermal emulator has been modelled and set-up in a real-time environment. The model made includes the hole hydraulic analysis of the thermal emulator. This model has been achieved by two different paths. Using a mathematical theoretical model and a physical Matlab Simscape model. These models have been, afterwards, compared with the set-up results. Results show that flow is going to be used to controlling the transient state of the thermal power of the pump, while electric power is going to be used to reach the desired set-point. Overall, results show that it is possible to emulate the behaviour of the micro gas turbine and that the objective of this work has been fulfilled.

- Abstract
Establishing hydrogen production infrastructure from renewable energy is a high priority for the energy transition. This project analyses options for deployment using offshore wind generation to power electrolysis for green hydrogen production. A case example of northern Spain is used to examine the optimisation and sensitivity of trade-offs between generator and electrolysis locations, as well as electricity and hydrogen transport. Both, onshore and offshore electrolyser locations are analysed. Using this case example enables demonstration of the logical sequence of infrastructure development priorities; an assessment of the critical locations for renewable energy; and most importantly an improved understanding of the sensitivity of different assumptions used to complete the whole system analysis. To this end, a sensitivity analysis is carried out using @RISK software to define the reliability of the results obtained, as well as the key factors that dominate the decision-making in the system design. The study concludes by presenting a decision-making tool to determine the optimum location of both the wind farm and the electrolyser, as well as the transport method for the case site to achieve the established requirements and an assessment of resilience for the outline system design.

Grain storage techniques play an important role in the food supply chain when it comes to food waste. The project BulkID is being developed with the aim of controlling cereal spoilage while being stored, and the theoretical work in this thesis is carried out as part of it. This bulk monitoring is achieved with the help of spherical sensors, and the research goal of this study is to establish a reliable and efficient procedure for placing the rounded prototypes among stored grains. In this investigation, the location of the spheres is acutely studied, for the reason that the defined dispersion should fulfil the necessary conditions for an adequate monitoring.

[EN]In recent times, the manipulation of nanoparticles at nanoscale has become a topic of great interest among the scientific community. The advantages of using SAW represent a great advance in fields such as biomedicine or biosensors. The develop of these techniques is actually related with the advances achieved in the microfluidics science. For this reason, the knowledge of the physics that prevails in the handling of tiny size particles becomes something essential. This project wants to advance in the understanding of physics behind and discuss the effects produced by the forces involved in the interaction with nanoparticles at nanoscale. For that purpose, the experiments carried out compare the obtained results with those which were made by other groups of researchers and pretends to shed light on the gaps identified in the related literature. In this regard, an attempt is made to find an answer to how a change in, for example, surface tension, the contact angle of the drop with the substrate, the viscosity and the density of the fluid affects the movement of the particles. The use of SAW implies the development of a specific device that can channel the wave to the surface in question, this device is called interdigital transducer IDT. A SAW is the acoustic wave produced by the IDT when an electric current is applied to its electrodes. Thanks to the piezoelectric effect of the substrate where the IDT is located, the electrical signal becomes into an acoustic wave that interacts with the surface of the droplet causing an acoustic field to be created within it. With the intention of proving the predicted events that take place inside the water droplet when it is subdue to the SAW, diverse types of IDTs able to operate at different frequencies are produced. Other parameters like the input power, frequency or the particles diameter are considered also to evaluate the involved forces when handling nanoparticles inside the sessile water droplet. - Abstract
The use of the concept of "primary energy" is present in all types of regulations at both European and national level, so that all aspects related to the reduction of energy use and energy efficiency measures speak in terms of primary energy and Primary Energy Factors, necessary for its conversion. The existing consensus on the use of the term is not such in terms of the methodology for calculating the Primary Energy Factors to be adopted, which is the reason for the search for a methodology that acquires the status of global and standard. Using an analytical methodology, this study will analyze and compare the main methods used by agencies and institutions: the Physical Energy Content Method and the Partial Substitution Method, together with another less widely used method, the Exergy Method. The three calculation methodologies will be applied to the case study of the Swedish electricity production mix. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of those methodologies, as well as discuss the difficulties of defining some variables such as efficiencies and system boundaries. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the complexity of trying to analyze a system as complex as the energy consumption of a country based on the calculation of a single number or Primary Energy Factor. The system boundaries affect the results. At the same time, the use of the Physical Energy Content Method is discarded because it incurs thermodynamic discrepancies. On the other hand, the use of the Partial Substitution Method and Exergy Method is encouraged, since they reflect more accurately the primary energy consumption, as long as the values of efficiencies that they use are clearly defined and referenced. However, there is a more widespread use of the Physical Energy Content Method in the institutions since the other methods present the great difficulty of establishing a consensus on the energy and exergy efficiencies values adopted. - Abstract
The development of a methodology for accurate and reliable condition assessment of civil struc-tures has become very important. The finite element (FE) model updating method provides an efficient, non-destructive, global damage identification technique, which is based on the fact that the modal parameters (e.g. natural frequencies and mode shapes) of the structure are af-fected by structural damage. In the FE model, the damage is represented by a change of the structural parameters and can be identified by updating the FE model to the measured modal parameters. This thesis describes an iterative sensitivity-based FE model updating method in which the discrepancies between the natural frequencies of the numerical model and the real structure are minimized. Furthermore, the updating procedure is applied to the model of the University of the Federal Armed Forces (UniBw) in Munich. For this purpose, it was necessary to design the model and develop an interface between the finite element software (ANSYS) and a computing software (MATLAB), which can apply the model updating technique to the finite element model.

- Abstract
The transformation of urban areas into more self-sufficient and carbon-free places is indispensable in the fight against climate change. 36% of global energy consumption comes from buildings, mainly in cities. If all available and suitable surfaces of these buildings were covered with solar devices, up to 22% of the electricity demand could be supplied, according to an EU study. One of the most advanced and aesthetically pleasing techniques is that of building- integrated technologies, whether they are photovoltaic modules producing electricity or solar thermal collectors producing heat. The main objective of this thesis is to carry out an extended literature review of all existing building- integrated technologies and the methods used to integrate them. In addition, a small compilation of the most relevant projects completed to date will be presented, and proposals will be made for Cranfield University to move closer to zero-emission energy consumption.

- Abstract
The objective of this full project is to design and develop a novel mobility system to be applied on extreme terrains of the Moon for NASA’s challenge, although in this report I will be only talking about the design part and how we came with it. First, we had to choose and focus on a type of potential mission that the rover using that mobility system would do. Once the mission was chosen, various ideas were presented regarding mobility systems and between those, we decided what type of system we would use by mixing different ideas from different proposals. It had to be something new and couldn’t be common like for example wheels. For the selection of the system, we had to research and overcome the possible difficulties we would find on the extreme terrains of the moon, like magnetic dust, big slopes or extreme temperatures between many others. After various meetings and considering different approaches, we ended up choosing a mobility system that would work with soft robotics, a robot with octopus-like tentacles where the arms could be detached to inspect more surface that would act like snakes with different modules. We decided to call this robot the UC-Ebot.

- Abstract
[EN]Kitting is a critical process in every single industrial system which involves mass production, assembly and complex logistics, and it can be considered as a shipping and warehouse technique that has become popular with the development of more complex manufacturing and production systems. Kitting is manually done by an operator, which involves wasting time and money while undertaking a task which is not value-adding for the final product. This work presents the concept model and operations of an Automated Kitting Station, which automates the kitting process completely and allows for future integration within an Automated Production Process. The 3D-Model, layout, process and implementation have been assessed and developed, and the Automated Kitting System and its operations have been validated through a ROS and Gazebo based simulation environment. The kitting task is done by a Robot Manipulator, which is capable of undertaking the materials pick and place tasks in real time as soon as kitting requests are done. The results demonstrate that the manual kitting process can effectively be transformed and improved by implementing automation to it. Higher efficiency and accuracy are obtained, the material flow is better monitored and a complete control of the kitting process is obtained. The simulation shows an accurate performance of the robot and a quick and effective response to an external kitting request.

The proliferation of the web and the new online teaching methodologies based on videoconferences has provoked a deficit in the amount of written learning material available. Even though this method is an obvious step forward from the classic teaching methods, being able to read the materials offers the students a more personalized experience in which they can benefit from learning the concepts at their own pace. Due to this fact, this project aims to support video lectures with a technology that has been hugely developed the last decade, speech recognition. Factor is able to offer text transcriptions of the videos thanks to this technology. Factor offers students the possibility of reading what professor’s say in their lectures and even look for key concepts. It also allows professors to create materials out of their own lectures. This project is focused on allowing the schools to create multimedia libraries that complement traditional video learning platforms.

- Abstract
English: An investigation has been conducted to compare the effects of airfoil suction surface passive deformation and increase of airfoil thickness in ground effect. Single airfoil configuration exhibits high sensitivity to the increase of Adverse Pressure Gradient (APG) due to ground effect, being necessary the use of double element wing to achieve required pressure distribution. A Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model is developed based on data from literature which is later used for CFD analysis of created geometries. 2D and 3D CFD analysis show that passive deformation of suction surface match the effects of increasing airfoil thickness within a 1% margin. While 2D analysis exhibit an improvement in downforce and efficiency increasing airfoil thickness, 3D analysis does not. 3D analysis also shows a change in tendency for downforce obtaining higher values than baseline from a thickness increase of 8% maximum thickness / chord (t/c). A structural concept was successfully modelled achieving a deformation close to target, providing 4.6% less downforce and 1% less efficiency.

- Abstract
This Thesis is based on Thermal and Energetic acquired concepts throughout the completion of a university degree and master. It will be carried out with the PoliTo (Politecnico di Torino) university, working from the so-called Energy Center1. There is a heat pump used for the hot water production and air conditioning of the whole building. We are going to expose the objectives, deepen in the explanation of the Energy Center itself, describe the thermal plant inside it, show the improvements that were carried out once it was a reality and make a functional analysis of it. Once all of this is exposed, the experimental data given by the sensor will be used. We are going to take the data of a whole year and we are going to separate it by months, calculating the average value for each month for each of the four values (in and out temperatures of the hot and cold streams). After that, the total average will be calculated. The next step will be to analyse these calculations through the Coolpack simulation system to, finally, compare them with the theoretical ones expected when the project was launched. All the schemes used will be shown in the annex and the support needed to fulfil this project in the Bibliography.

- Abstract
This master's thesis involves the design and control of the blade ́s pitch angle for a small wind turbine presented to the International Small Wind Turbine Competition (ISWTC). The control of pitch mechanism will modify the position of the wind turbine blade by means of a rotation with respect to its longitudinal axis. As a result, a better control of the wind turbine power, a reduction of aerodynamic stresses, thus facilitating better operation and maintenance will be achieved. The main objectives of this project are as follows: • Design the pitch mechanism • Modelling of pitch mechanism for the controller design • Study and understanding pitch control objectives and strategies • Designing the controller and validating by numerical simulations • Realization of the controller using Arduino or equivalent device This work will start by introducing the main types of wind turbines and factors that can affect a horizontal axis generator. In addition, the aerodynamic principles that govern the operation of wind turbines are described in order to understand the importance of the pitch system. As well as a description of the blade profiles and the theories and concepts used for the aerodynamic calculations. Once the theoretical concepts of the wind turbine have been introduce, the background of the project is presented, which includes a brief description of the wind turbine that will be used as the starting point for this project. Furthermore, the requirements specified by the competition rules are also listed. Afterwards, the needed calculations for the design of the pitch mechanism, the selection of the actuator and the CAD design of the mechanism, as well as the actual constructed mechanism are presented. And immediately afterwards, the control systems are developed theoretically and the designs of the developed control system are described, along with the elements used and the Arduino code and the result obtained. - Abstract
Artificial Intelligence and specially Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques are increasingly populating today’s technological and social landscape. These advancements have overwhelmingly contributed to the development of Speech Synthesis, also known as, Text-To-Speech, where speech is artificially produced from text by means of computer technology. Despite existing such a variety of speech synthesis tools and systems, there is a fundamental common drawback: unnatural, robotic and impersonal synthesized voices. That’s where Voice Cloning technology comes into play, which allows to generate an artificial synthetic speech that resembles a targeted human voice. This new practice offers many benefits in several fields, such as, healthcare, education, or advertising. However, there is a known fact that every coin has two sides. Likewise, with the development of voice cloning, the generation of fake video and voices, known as “deepfakes”, has risen, causing a loss of trust and greater fear towards technology. In this way, the objective of this project is to analyze the availability of deepfake voice technologies nowadays and its impact for good and evil. Therefore, we chose to focus on the educational field, by implementing a voice query assistant that answers to questions related to a course, like the professor’s contact information or the date of the final exam. To enhance user experience, we added the extra feature of answering with the corresponding professor’s cloned voice. Moreover, as an initial point for a forthcoming investigation, we provide a design of a qualitative research study that allows participants to test the built framework and to give their views in order to gain a better understanding of the impact that voice cloning causes on people. Since all technology related concept, voice cloning is not exempt from discussion, so we also conduct an analysis about the misuse, the regulation, and the future of it. - Abstract
In the last few years, parallel manipulators are being increasingly studied and used for different applications. The performance of parallel manipulators is very sensitive to the geometric parameters, so it is essential to optimize them in order to obtain the desired function. We propose two optimization algorithms that consider the size and regularity of the workspace. The first one obtains the geometric parameters combination that results in the biggest and most regular workspace. The second method analyzes the geometric parameters combinations that result in an acceptable size of the workspace—even if it is not the biggest one—and finds out which ones result in the lowest power consumption. Even if the results vary depending on the application and trajectories studied, the proposed methodology can be followed to any type of parallel manipulator, application or trajectory. In this work we focus on the dimension optimization of the geometric parameters of the 2PRU-1PRS Multi-Axial Shaking Table (MAST) for automobile pieces testing purposes.

- Abstract
Compliant mechanisms are widely used for instrumentation and measuring devices for their precision and high bandwidth. In this paper, the mechatronic model of a compliant 3PRS parallel manipulator is developed, integrating the inverse and direct kinematics, the inverse dynamic problem of the manipulator and the dynamics of the actuators and the control. The kinematic problem is solved, assuming a pseudo-rigid model for the deflection in the compliant revolute and spherical joints. The inverse dynamic problem is solved, using the Principle of Energy Equivalence. The mechatronic model allows the prediction of the bandwidth of the manipulator motion in the 3 degrees of freedom for a given control and set of actuators, helping in the design of the optimum solution. A prototype is built and validated, comparing experimental signals with the ones from the model.

exergy ,calculation methods ,primary energy ,physical energy content ,primary energy factor ,partial substitution - Abstract
The complexity of choosing a calculation methodology is not only due to the choice of efficiencies but other factors, such as system boundaries, also influence the final results and they have to be reflected in some way. Therefore, it is difficult to decide on a single solution and future studies on other indicators and variables affecting primary energy usage are needed, for instance, CO2 emissions associated with generation technologies.

- Abstract
Energy storage systems are a step forward for renewable energy generation.

The aim of this project is to get a wheel robot to reach a destination successfully while avoiding any obstacles it may find in its way. The robot is equipped with an ultrasonic sensor to detect any obstacle and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that measures the velocity and acceleration to determine its position. To achieve that goal, a control system has been designed and implemented that creates a path from the starting point to the destination and, if it finds an obstacle in its way, it is able to avoid it and go back to the path.

In recent times, the manipulation of nanoparticles at nanoscale has become a topic of great interest among the scientific community. The combination of these different parameters directly affects the movement of the particles inside the droplet and raises the following questions. For instance, the interaction of the SAW with the droplet when it propagates along the substrate generates three known distinct types of forces inside the droplet. The acoustic streaming force ASF emerged from the propagation of the acoustic wave, the acoustic radiation force ARF and the centrifugal force Fc arisen as a consequence of the leakage of the propagated SAW over the substrate. In this sense, these forces are perceived by the particles arising a movement around the droplet in which they are immersed and forming different patterns of movement which are studied in this project. On the other hand, as it has been described in the literature, these forces are closely related with the particle diameter, the frequency and the input power applied to the IDT. In this vein, different particles sizes 7 µm and 1 µm of polystyrene nanoparticles immersed in a 2 µL droplet water volume were tested and four different IDTs with varying nominal frequencies 20,40,80 and 160 MHz are produced.

Deep space exploration is key to understand the origin of our Solar System and address the Earth impact risk. Space Trajectory Design (STD) has evolved and incremented in complexity due to the interest within the space community to explore multiple celestial bodies in a single mission. This thesis focuses on an Asteroid Tour Trajectory in the context of the CASTAway mission. CASTAway is a mission proposal for European Space Agency’s 5th call of medium-size missions to explore the Asteroid Main Belt. The objective is not to find the global optima but find feasible sequences of asteroid fly-bys, as per feasible tours of 12 asteroids of a total Δv of less than 9 km/s is meant. The complexity of the problem is given by the large number of possible permutations of 12-asteroid tour solutions – even with a reduced catalogue of 158 asteroids – and because of being a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) problem. Because of this, metaheuristics are used to tackle the problem. A novel problem modelling that achieves uniqueness on the cost paths of the Search Space and a novel ACO solver is presented, with the general objective for the whole CASTPath project of finding a robust low computational heuristic. Due to the scientific interest on having diversity in the sequences, a similarity measurement tool is also developed. Several test cases with different ACO tuning parameters are run on a High Performance Computer. Results show that this algorithm outperforms the previous heuristics on CASTPath obtaining the lowest Δv (7.27 km/s) achieved by an heuristic and finding multiple feasible sequences (97 in 1 h). Moreover, the new problem modelling has allowed within the research group, to find the global optima (6.98 km/s) for this asteroid catalogue by Dynamic Programming.

The results of the case study show that it is possible to clone someone’s voice based on just a few seconds of reference audio, which creates a superior user experience, but at the same time, reveals how easily can anyone have access to voice cloning. This expresses very well the importance of the new challenges opened by this potential technology and the need of safeguarding and regulation. There is no doubt that to understand the dynamics and impact of voice cloning and reach more robust conclusions, future research is needed. The simulation shows an accurate performance of the robot and a quick and effective response to an external kitting request.

energy center ,cooling System - Abstract

PaaS ,OpenShift ,Cloud - Abstract
A few years ago, the professional sector was introduced to the term "cloud" by implementing technologies based on the processing and storage of data in the cloud that allow greater availability and efficiency in the use of physical resources. However, this trend has not been the same in the education sector, which can also benefit from the adoption of these technologies for a more efficient management of the infrastructure and an improvement in the quality of the education offered. In order to demonstrate these benefits, a platform as a service (PaaS) based on OpenShift, from RedHat, has been developed. The preparation of this work includes the process of installing the "cluster" of servers in a virtual environment and the description of the benefits obtained after performing several tests on the platform. In addition, a plan to improve the project in the future has been included, with a detailed explanation of how to replicate it in a physical environment. Duela urte batzuk, sektore profesionala "Cloud" terminoan sartu zen, datuak hodeian prozesatzean eta biltegiratzean oinarritutako teknologiak inplementatuz. Teknologia hauek, baliabide fisikoen erabilgarritasunean eskuragarritasun eta eraginkortasun hobea ahalbidetzen dute. Hala ere, joera hori ez da berdina izan hezkuntza-sektorean; izan ere, teknologia horiek azpiegitura modu eraginkorragoan kudeatzeko eta eskainitako hezkuntzaren kalitatea hobetzeko erabil daitezke. Onura horiek frogatzeko, RedHaten OpenShift oinarritutako zerbitzu (PaaS) plataforma bat garatu da. Lan hau egiterakoan, zerbitzarien "klusterra" ingurune birtual batean instalatzeko prozesua eta plataformari buruzko hainbat proba egin ondoren lortutako onurak deskribatu dira. Gainera, etorkizunean proiektua hobetzeko plan bat elaboratu da, ingurune fisiko batean lana erreplikatzeko azalpen zehatz-mehatz batekin.
