Abstract

Sustainable water management has become an urgent challenge due to irregular water availability patterns and water quality issues. The effect of climate change exacerbates this phenomenon in water-scarce areas, such as the Mediterranean region, stimulating the implementation of solutions aiming to mitigate or improve environmental, social, and economic conditions. A novel solution inspired by nature, technology-oriented, explored in the past years, is constructed wetlands. Commonly applied for different types of wastewater due to its low cost and simple maintenance, they are considered a promising solution to remove pollutants while creating an improved ecosystem by increasing biodiversity around them. This research aims to assess the sustainability of two typologies of constructed wetlands in two Italian areas: Sicily, with a vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland, and Emilia Romagna, with a surface flow constructed wetland. The assessment is performed by applying a cost-benefit analysis combining primary and secondary data sources. The analysis considered the market and non-market values in both proposed scenarios to establish the feasibility of the two options and identify the most convenient one. Results show that both constructed wetlands bring more benefits (benefits-cost ratio, BCR) than costs (BCR > 0). In the case of Sicily, the BCR is lower (1) in the constructed wetland scenario, while in its absence it is almost double. If other ecosystem services are included the constructed wetland scenario reach a BCR of 4 and a ROI of 5, showing a better performance from a costing perspective than the absence one. In Emilia Romagna, the constructed wetland scenario shows a high BCR (10) and ROI (9), while the scenario in absence has obtained a negative present value indicating that the cost do not cover the benefits expected.

Abstract

Sight reading (SR) is a dynamic task which requires the performance of the music printed in a score whithout previous practice (Lehmann and McArthur 2002 (See CR48)). Our main aim was to analyse how cognitive flexibility and the inhibitory processes involved in the control of interference of irrelevant stimulus and in the suppression of preponderant actions or responses, could differently contribute to fluency and accuracy in SR, as a function of the conditions of difficulty of the SR tasks. We also aimed to determine if these contributions were independent of instrument knowledge. 63 students of melodic instruments participated in the study. The results revealed a significant contribution of the inhibitory processes involved in the suppression of preponderant actions or responses to both fluency and accuracy, even in low difficult conditions of the SR tasks. Our results also revealed significant contributions of cognitive flexibility to fluency and of resistance to interference to accuracy only in high difficult conditions of the SR tasks. Abstract

Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, is a pest native to North America where it is associated with cone damage in seed orchards. In this area, Hadronotus pennsylvanicus Ashmead is the main natural enemy of L. occidentalis. The introduction of this pest in the Mediterranean area coincides with a reduction in the yield of pine nut crops in the Mediterranean region, a forest product of high economic value, known as "dry cone syndrome". The objectives of this study are to correlate the damage caused by L. occidentalis on Pinus pinea L. with this syndrome, to identify native parasitoids of L. occidentalis eggs, and estimate their synchrony with L. occidentalis, and to evaluate the suitability of the parasitoid with the greatest impact on the pest population as a biological control agent. Seasonal damage to cones and kernels was defined by three insect bagging trials at different times of cone development, while population damage was estimated by protecting and exposing cones throughout their development in a clonal bank. Four surveys of native egg parasitoids were conducted, three in the clone bank and one in a P. pinea reforested pine forest. Four parasitism indices were used to estimate the impact of the native egg parasitoids on the L. occidentalis population, and their synchronization was defined by two years of visual monitoring of the pest in the clone bank. The suitability of O. obscurus as a biological control agent was evaluated under standard laboratory conditions (21 ± 2°C; RH 40% ± 10%) and white light (16:8; L:D) by comparing its biological and demographic parameters with those of H. pennsylvanicus. The results suggest that L. occidentalis is one cause of the "dry cone syndrome", although the influence of other factors cannot be excluded. The severity of the damage varies with the development of the cones and kernels on which this species feeds, decreasing as development progresses. Mortality of first (10.0% - 100.0%) and third (0.0% - 90.0%) year cones decr, Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann es una plaga nativa de Norteamérica, asociada con daños en piñas y semillas en huertos semilleros, dónde presenta su principal enemigo natural, Hadronotus pennsylvanicus Ashmead. La introducción de esta plaga en la cuenca mediterránea coincide con la reducción del rendimiento de las cosechas de piñón blanco, producto forestal con alto valor económico, denominado “síndrome de la piña seca”. Los objetivos de este estudio se centran en relacionar los daños causados por L. occidentalis en piñas de Pinus pinea L. con dicho síndrome, en identificar especies de parasitoides nativos y estimar su sincronización con L. occidentalis, y en evaluar la aptitud como agente de control biológico del parasitoide con mayor impacto en la población plaga. Los daños estacionales en piñas y piñones se definieron mediante tres ensayos de embolsamiento de piñas con insectos en diferentes momentos de su desarrollo fenológico, mientras que los daños causados por la población se estimaron mediante la protección y exposición de piñas durante su desarrollo fenológico en un banco clonal. Se realizaron cuatro prospecciones de parasitoides de huevos nativos, tres en el banco clonal y una en una repoblación de P. pinea. El impacto de las especies se estimó mediante el cálculo de cuatro índices de parasitismo y su sincronización con L. occidentalis se definió mediante el monitoreo visual de la plaga en el banco clonal durante dos años. La aptitud de O. obscurus como agente de control biológico se estimó en condiciones estándar de laboratorio (21 ± 2°C; RH 40% ± 10%) y luz blanca (16:8; L:D) mediante la comparación de sus parámetros biológicos y demográficos con los de H. pennsylvanicus. 33. Visuospatial Processing Improvements in Students with Down Syndrome through the Autonomous Use of Technologies

Abstract

The main purpose of our study was to examine whether autonomous training through the use of technologies could be associated with improvements in selective attention, visuospatial short-term memory and visuospatial processing in students with Down Syndrome (DS). In addition, our study aimed to analyse how the improvements in selective attention and visuospatial short-term memory tasks could predict improvements in visuospatial processing. Twenty-six children and adolescents with DS who belong to specialized schools for ID participated in the study. Three different mobile applications, Bubbles (selective attention), Pairs and Learn (visuospatial short-term memory) and Tangram (visuospatial processing) developed by Smile and Learn were used during a three-month period by the students. The results showed significant improvements through training in both, Pairs and Learn and Tangram, whereas there was no significant improvement in Bubbles. The results also showed that Pairs and Learn performance could predict a 36% variance in Tangram one. Cognitive and educational implications of these results are discussed.

The commercialization of pine nuts generates major economic benefits for the Mediterranean basin. This has been reduced due to an increase in cone and seed damage associated with the spread of the western conifer seed bug (WCSB) throughout the Mediterranean region and the Dry Cone Syndrome appearing on pine cones. Studies on several conifer species have associated cone and seed damage with WCSB feeding.To relate cone and seed damage of stone pine to WCSB feeding, one exposure and exclusion trial of cones to the feeding of the natural WCSB population was carried out. To determine the seasonality of cone and seed damage caused by this pest, another trial consisting of bagging cones with insects was performed with first‐, second‐ and third‐year cones at different stages of cone development.The natural WCSB population was associated with cone abortion in second‐year cones (unprotected: 43.6% vs. protected: 2.7%), a decreased number of seeds per cone (82.0 vs. 105.3), kernel yield (1.8% vs. 3.8%) and proportion of sound kernels (35.6% vs. 73.6%), and numerous types of kernel damage.Cone mortality in first‐ and third‐year cones bagged with insects decreased as the bagging date advanced. A temporal sequence of kernel damage in third‐year cones (aborted, dry embryo without endosperm, and totally or partially damaged endosperm) was reported for seed development and the timing of WCSB feeding.Our findings may be useful in the management of WCSB populations to prevent significant damage to the stone pine nut crop. Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are emerging zoonotic arboviruses sharing the same life cycle with mosquitoes as vectors and wild birds as reservoir hosts. The main objective of this study was to characterize the pathogenicity and course of infection of two viral strains (WNV/08 and USUV/09) co-circulating in Southern Spain in a natural host, the red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa), and to compare the results with those obtained with the reference strain WNV/NY99.

Abstract

A green analytical method based on the use of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) has been proposed for fat removal in the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) in biotic samples. Using priority PCB congeners as model compounds, a novel sample preparation approach fully avoiding the use of mineral acids has been developed. Once optimized, the procedure allowed fat removal to be accomplished by 30min treatment with [chlorine chlo ride]:[oxalic acid dihydrated] 1:1 molar ratio at 60°C, with 3s vortexing every 5min to facilitate the homoge nization of the slurry. Then, the target PCBs were recovered from the slurry by 20min extraction with 4mL of n-hexane. This DES-based method was combined with gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC qMS) for final PCB determination. The complete analytical method provided satisfactory recoveries of the target compounds (above 87% for all analytes), using as a small amount of sample as 0.150g. The repeatability of the complete procedure, expressed as relative standard deviation, was less than 5%, and the intermediate precision better than 14%. Final validation of the proposed methodology included the satisfactory comparison of the con centrations calculated for the endogenous PCBs in selected fatty foodstuffs with lipid contents under 18% (w/w fresh weight, fw) with those found when the same samples were analyzed by a more conventional and accepted reference procedure. The limits of detection were in all cases lower than 30 pg/g fw (as calculated for real sam ples), demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed procedure for accurate determination of the target compounds in biotic samples.

Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) is a neurotropic flavivirus transmitted by the bites of infected Culex sp mosquitoes and it is widely distributed across Europe. Severe forms of West Nile disease (WND) can cause meningitis, encephalitis or even death. In 2020, WNV caused an outbreak in southwest Spain that ended up with 70 human infections and 7 deaths. There are no vaccines or specific drugs to prevent and treat the symptoms of WND in humans, so the search for novel targets for therapeutic interventions is mandatory. Lipid metabolism is gaining interest as a potential target to combat flavivirus using a host-targeted approach.
