El control de las enfermedades bacterianas, como el fuego bacteriano de las rosáceas causado por Erwinia amylovora, requiere la búsqueda de estrategias de gestión eficaces y eco-sostenibles, como la utilización de agentes de biocontrol. En este trabajo presentamos un cribado de aislados bacterianos, recuperados de diversos nichos asociados a las plantas y orígenes geográficos, como una primera etapa de un programa de búsqueda y selección de agentes de biocontrol de E. amylovora. Se obtuvo una colección de aislados, con los que se evaluó su antagonismo in vitro frente a E. amylovora y su capacidad de reducir la incidencia y severidad del fuego bacteriano ex vivo, tanto en frutos inmaduros como en brotes, así como el retraso en la aparición de los mismos.

La diversidad microbiana de las plantas es un factor clave para prevenir la emergencia y dispersión de enfermedades, ya que los microorganismos que las habitan son una fuente de potenciales agentes de biocontrol. Su utilización se considera una estrategia efectiva y ecosostenible, alternativa al empleo de agroquímicos y antibióticos, dada la carencia de métodos eficaces de control. Hemos llevado a cabo una búsqueda y selección de antagonistas bacterianos con actividad frente a la bacteria Erwinia amylovora, agente causal del fuego bacteriano de las rosáceas, considerada un organismo de cuarentena en la Unión Europea y que es capaz de poner en jaque cultivos estratégicos como peral, manzano o níspero, así como dificultar la comercialización de algunas especies ornamentales, Se seleccionaron bacterias, aisladas de diferentes tejidos vegetales y orígenes geográficos, con una clara actividad antagonista ín vitro frente a E. amylovora y con capacidad para reducir los síntomasde la enfermedad en ensayos ex vivo. Los aislados se identificaron como pertenecientes a los géneros Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Curtobacterium, Rosenbergiella y Serratia. Estos resultados, parte de los cuales se ha publicado recientemente en una revista científica internacional, ponen de relieve el papel de la microbiota asociada a la planta, aún poco explorada, en el control biológico de las enfermedades vegetales.

In the outbreak of Xylella fastidiosa in the province of Alicante (mainland Spain), all isolates characterized so far belong to subsp. multiplex and ST6, and the main host is Prunus dulcis. Two different strains (IVIA 5901 and ESVL), isolated from almond trees in two municipalities of the Demarcated Area, were used to carry out pathogenicity tests on different plant species. The Italian strain De Donno (subsp. pauca, ST53) and the Spanish strain IVIA 5770 (subsp. fastidiosa, ST1) were also included. Five cultivars of Prunus dulcis, eight of Olea europaea, four of Vitis vinifera, Citrus limon, Citrus sinensis, Citrus reticulata, Diospyros kaki, Eriobotrya japonica, and the forest species Quercus suber and Q. ilex were challenged. A total of 35 plants for each species or cultivar were inoculated. At 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months post-inoculation (mpi) plants were sampled and analyzed by real-time PCR, to assess bacterial movement over time. The results show that, in general, no clear pattern of movement was found in the different plant species. Interestingly, in olive and grape, regardless the cultivar, the subsp. multiplex ST6 Alicante isolates were hardly detected from 12 mpi onwards, i.e. the systemic movement was very slow. In fact, they were only detected in less than 4% of the infected plants and with very late Cq values. In citrus plants, detection of these isolates failed since 3 mpi, as occurred in kaki and loquat trees. As for Quercus species, the detection rate was higher in Q. suber than in Q. ilex. Only in almond and cork oak trees, leaf scorch symptoms could be correlated with the presence of X. fastidiosa subsp. multiplex. Moreover, in these cases the pathogen was re-isolated. The timing and the level of detection for all the strains throughout the trial obtained so far are presented.

Xylella fastidiosa es una de las principales bacterias de cuarentena en la Unión Europea, que habita en el xilema de la planta hospedadora y el tracto digestivo de insectos que actúan como vectores. Se multiplica en los vasos conductores de numerosas especies vegetales, pudiendo llegar a obstruir el flujo de savia, lo que provoca síntomas de estrés hídrico que pueden causar la muerte de la planta. En España, las zonas con focos activos son las Islas Baleares y la Comunidad Valenciana, con diferencias en cuanto a las características genéticas de los aislados bacterianos y las especies vegetales afectadas.

Bacteriophage viruses are a promising tool for preventing and treating bacterial infections. In this sense, phage therapy is an eco-sustainable approach that has the potential to be used as either an alternative or a complement to other strategies for the management of Xylella fastidiosa diseases. The main objective of this work was the search, isolation, selection and characterization of bacteriophages against this phytopathogenic bacterium.

Xylella fastidiosa es una bacteria Gram-negativa de la familia Xanthomonadaceae que habita el xilema de la planta hospedadora, donde se multiplica y puede llegar a obstruir el flujo de savia bruta, pudiendo llegar a provocar la muerte de la planta. Tiene un modo de vida dual, ya que también habita en el tracto digestivo anterior de insectos chupadores de xilema que actúan como vectores. Afecta a un elevado número de especies vegetales, muchas de ellas de gran interés agrícola y medioambiental

El HLB es la enfermedad más devastadora de los cítricos que se conoce hoy en día. Se asocia a tres especies bacterianas del género Liberibacter: `Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus´, `Ca. L. africanus´ y `Ca. L. americanus´. Estas bacterias son transmitidas por insectos vectores de la familia Psyllidae, y no se han podido cultivar hasta el momento en el laboratorio, lo que dificulta en gran medida su estudio y control. La prevención de la diseminación de estas tres especies y de su entrada en áreas libres de la enfermedad, como el continente europeo y, en particular, la cuenca mediterránea, requiere el uso de técnicas de detección específicas y sensibles.

La prevención de la introducción de una enfermedad en una zona libre de ella depende, en primer lugar, de la disponibilidad de técnicas de detección que sean sensibles y específicas. En el caso de las enfermedades causadas por la bacteria Xylella fastidiosa, el protocolo actual de la EPPO para la detección de esta bacteria fitopatógena, se basa en la detección molecular, y en él se describen varios protocolos de PCR en tiempo real dirigidos a diferentes secuencias diana del genoma de esta bacteria.

En las últimas décadas, la Nanotecnología se ha convertido en una de las disciplinas más revolucionarias en el desarrollo de nuevos materiales. Debido a su pequeño tamaño (1-100 nm), las nanopartículas (NPs) presentan diversas propiedades, biológicas y físico-químicas, diferentes a los materiales a nivel macroscópico, lo que las dota de especial interés para muchos sectores como la industria farmacéutica, alimenticia, la biomedicina o las ciencias medioambientales.

'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' (CaLsol) es una bacteria asociada a desórdenes vegetativos en cultivos estratégicos a escala mundial, como patata, tomate y pimiento en el continente americano y Oceanía, y zanahoria, apio y chirivía en Europa. La bacteria está restringida al floema de la planta hospedadora y la hemolinfa de psílidos que se alimentan de floema y constituyen la principal vía de transmisión, y que, según su especie, tienen preferencia por los cultivos de solanáceas o apiáceas. Los desórdenes descritos son perceptibles de manera visual y pueden llegar a limitar en las condiciones ambientales de la cuenca mediterránea, la comercialización de tubérculos, raíces y frutos de las plantas infectadas, causando un impacto económico importante. El objetivo de este estudio fue el análisis de la incidencia de infección por CaLsol en cultivos de zanahoria en condiciones de la cuenca mediterránea, así como su correlación con la calidad del producto que llega al consumidor. A lo largo de dos campañas consecutivas en Villena (Alicante), se encontraron niveles crecientes de infección por CaLsol, superiores al 70% al final del período de cultivo; sin embargo, no se pudo establecer correlación con posible sintomatología y, además, las características fisicoquímicas y organolépticas de las zanahorias no se vieron afectadas por la presencia de la bacteria.

A low cost field robot has been built capable of transporting a series of sensors through horticultural fields, with the aim of early detecting problems in the crop by means of proximal sensing techniques. The robot is operated by remote control and is driven by two electric motors coupled to the wheels and powered by batteries. The sensors include different thermal, colour and multispectral cameras in the visible and the near-infrared range that are synchronised with the advance of the robot by means of an encoder coupled to the axis of the motors. The position of each image is geolocated using a GPS. An industrial computer receives the encoder pulses and triggers the cameras, also receiving and storing the images and GPS information for further processing. The inspection area is located beneath the robot with the cameras focusing downwards (to the crop). To avoid the negative influence of direct sunlight, the area had been covered with a canvas and illuminated artificially with four-spot halogen lights. A telescopic extension system between 100 and 200 cm allows the robot to adapt to crops with different row widths. The first trials were carried out in a carrot test field located in Villena (Spain) to detect plants infected with Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum. The crop was inspected every month from sow to harvest. Labels were placed on 100 plants to guarantee their individual identification in the images. During the harvest, these plants were collected separately, identified and analysed in the laboratory using molecular techniques in order to determine whereas they were infected or not. Several maps of the field have been created using spectral indexes at a very high resolutions between 0.5 mm/pixel and 2.5 mm/pixel depending on the camera.

Fundamentos: Conocer el absentismo por la gripe en el medio educativo. Métodos. Entre otras actuaciones llevadas a cabo en el Plan Pandémico, se monitorizaron las ausencias por síntomas gripales en niños de educación infantil, primaria y secundaria de colegios públicos y concertados desde la semana epidemiológica 39/2009 a la 4/2010, transmitiendo los datos de la Dirección Provincial del Ministerio de Educación a la Consejería de Sanidad y Consumo semanalmente. Estos datos se compararon con los de las mismas semanas de Enfermedades de Declaración Obligatoria y Red Centinela de Ceuta. Resultados. Se contabilizaron un total de 2.055 ausencias, con un pico máximo en la semana 45. El pico máximo en Edos y Red Centinela fue en la semana 47. Conclusiones. Los datos de absentismo son un indicador complementario de otros tradicionales. Background: Knowing Influenza absenteeism in the educational environment. Making health education in the same medium. Among other actions carried out in the pandemic plan, the absences were monitored by flu-like symptoms in children from kindergarten, primary and secondary public schools and reached epidemiological week 39/2009 to 4/2010, transmitting the data from the Directorate Provincial Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Health and Consumer weekly.
