Abstract

An account is given of the Central Laser Facility's work to produce a cryogenic hydrogen targetry system using a pulse tube cryocooler. Due to the increasing demand for low Z thin laser targets, CLF (in collaboration with TUD) have been developing a system which allows the production of solid hydrogen membranes by engineering a design which can achieve this remotely; enabling the gas injection, condensation and solidification of hydrogen without compromising the vacuum of the target chamber. A dynamic sealing mechanism was integrated which allows targets to be grown and then remotely exposed to open vacuum for laser interaction. Further research was conducted on the survivability of the cryogenic targets which concluded that a warm gas effect causes temperature spiking when exposing the solidified hydrogen to the outer vacuum. This effect was shown to be mitigated by improving the pumping capacity of the environment and reducing the minimum temperature obtainable on the target mount. This was achieved by developing a two-stage radiation shield encased with superinsulating blanketing; reducing the base temperature from 14 ± 0.5 K to 7.2 ± 0.2 K about the coldhead as well as improving temperature control stability following the installation of a high-performance temperature controller and sensor apparatus. The system was delivered experimentally and in July 2014 the first laser shots were taken upon hydrogen targets in the Vulcan TAP facility.

Abstract

To generate petawatt pulses using the Vulcan Nd:glass laser requires a broad bandwidth high-gain preamplifier. The preamplifier used is an optical parametric amplifier that provides a total gain of [10.sup.8] in three amplification stages. We report on a detailed investigation of the effect of the Vulcan optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPAt preamplifier on contrast caused by the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) pedestal that extends up to 2 ns before the arrival of the main pulse. The contrast after compression is improved to 4 x [10.sup.8] of the intensity of the main pulse using near-field apertures between the stages of the OPCPA preamplifier. Further reduction of the level of the ASE pedestal can be achieved at the cost of a reduction in amplified bandwidth by solely phosphate glass amplification after initial preamplification rather than a mixed glass amplification scheme. Abstract

Vulcan is established as a world leading user facility for studies of ultra-high intensity laser interactions with matter. The Petawatt(PW) Upgrade project will deliver an order of magnitude increase in laser power to target, delivering interaction intensities of 10 21 Wcm -2. Before commencing operation to users a commissioning study was carried out. The objectives of this investigation were: To perform radiological surveys of the facility in anticipated target configurations and to install additional shielding for high-Z interactions as required To measure the target irradiance and the X-ray spot size To investigate the effects of electromagnetic noise on the chamber and target area equipment To determine the level of debris produced from the target and to devise a suitable operating scheme to protect chamber optics from damage Installation of an optical probe Contrast measurement of the laser pulses This report will review the experimental and radiological data obtained from the thirteen solid target interaction shots fired during the commissioning run in the newly constructed PW interaction facility 1) where doses of 45 mSv @ 1m were obtained. Commissioning of the PW laser and compressor chain is reported in separate articles, as is the commissioning of the large aperture gratings at high laser fluences 2).

Abstract

We report on the first demonstration of a diode pumped, gas cooled, cryogenic multi-slab Yb:YAG amplifier. The performance was characterised over a temperature range from 88 K to 175 K. A maximum small-signal single-pass longitudinal gain of 11.0 was measured at 88 K. When amplifying ns-pulses, recorded output energies were 10.1 J at 1 Hz in a 4-pass extraction geometry and 6.4 J at 10 Hz in a 3-pass setup, corresponding to optical-to-optical conversion efficiencies of 21 % and 16 %, respectively. To our knowledge, this represents the highest pulse energy so far obtained from a cryo-cooled Yb-laser and the highest efficiency from a multi-J DPSSL system.

Abstract

The Vulcan Nd:glass laser at the Central Laser Facility (CLF) has recently been upgraded to the Petawatt level (10 15 Watts). The facility is now operational to the UK and international user community. During the first user experiments, the power and focussed intensity were increased gradually up to the Petawatt regime. Considerable experience has been gained operating the Vulcan facility in this mode. The Petawatt facility is designed to deliver irradiance on target of 10 21 W.cm -2 for a wide-ranging experimental programme in fundamental physics and advanced applications. Abstract

Vulcan is established as a world leading user facility for studies of ultra-high intensity laser interactions with matter. The Petawatt(PW) Upgrade project will deliver an order of magnitude increase in laser power to target, delivering interaction intensities of 10 21 Wcm -2. Before commencing operation to users a commissioning study was carried out. The objectives of this investigation were: To perform radiological surveys of the facility in anticipated target configurations and to install additional shielding for high-Z interactions as required To measure the target irradiance and the X-ray spot size To investigate the effects of electromagnetic noise on the chamber and target area equipment To determine the level of debris produced from the target and to devise a suitable operating scheme to protect chamber optics from damage Installation of an optical probe Contrast measurement of the laser pulses This report will review the experimental and radiological data obtained from the thirteen solid target interaction shots fired during the commissioning run in the newly constructed PW interaction facility 1) where doses of 45 mSv @ 1m were obtained. Commissioning of the PW laser and compressor chain is reported in separate articles, as is the commissioning of the large aperture gratings at high laser fluences 2).

Abstract

We present a numerical model of a pulsed, diode-pumped Yb:YAG laser amplifier for the generation of high energy ns-pulses. This model is used to explore how optical-to-optical efficiency depends on factors such as pump duration, pump spectrum, pump intensity, doping concentration, and operating temperature. We put special emphasis on finding ways to achieve high efficiency within the practical limitations imposed by real-world laser systems, such as limited pump brightness and limited damage fluence. We show that a particularly advantageous way of improving efficiency within those constraints is operation at cryogenic temperature. Based on the numerical findings we present a concept for a scalable amplifier based on an end-pumped, cryogenic, gas-cooledmulti-slab architecture.

Abstract

The spectra of energetic electrons produced by a laser interaction with underdense plasma have been measured at intensities > 3 × 10 20 W cm − 2 . Electron energies in excess of 300 MeV have been observed. Measurements of the transmitted laser spectrum indicate that there is no correlation between the acceleration of electrons and plasma wave production. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the laser ponderomotive force produces an ion channel. The interaction of the laser field with the nonlinear focusing force of the channel leads to electron acceleration. The majority of the electrons never reach the betatron resonance but those which gain the highest energies do so. The acceleration process exhibits a strong sensitivity to initial conditions with particles that start within a fraction of a laser wavelength following completely different trajectories and gaining markedly different energies.
