Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To reassess the practical value of verbal autopsy data, which, in the absence of more definitive information, have been used to describe the causes of maternal mortality and to identify priorities in programmes intended to save women's lives in developing countries. METHODS: We reanalysed verbal autopsy data from a study of 145 maternal deaths that occurred in Guerrero, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in 1995, taking into account other causes of death and the WHO classification system. The results were also compared with information given on imperfect death certificates. FINDINGS: The reclassification showed wide variations in the attribution of maternal deaths to single specific medical causes. CONCLUSION: The verbal autopsy methodology has inherent limitations as a means of obtaining histories of medical events. At best it may reconfirm the knowledge that mortality among poor women with little access to medical care is higher than that among wealthier women who have better access to such care.

Abstract

Backward elastic electron scattering from odd-A nuclear targets is characterized by magnetic form factors containing precise information on the nuclear structure. We study the sensitivity of the magnetic form factors to structural effects related to the evolution and shape transitions in both isotopic and isotonic chains. Calculations of magnetic form factors are performed in the plane-wave Born approximation. The nuclear structure is obtained from a deformed self-consistent mean-field calculation based on a Skyrme HF+BCS formalism. Collective effects are included in the cranking approximation, whereas nucleon-nucleon correlations are taken into account in the coherent density fluctuation model. The evolution of the magnetic form factors is found to exhibit signatures of shape transitions that show up in selected isotopic and isotonic chains involving both stable and unstable nuclei. Several cases are identified as suitable candidates for showing such fingerprints of shape transitions. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an established risk factor for cognitive impairment, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly explored. One potential mechanism may be through effects of T2DM on cerebral perfusion. The current study hypothesized that T2DM is associated with altered peripheral and central hemodynamic responses to orthostasis, which may in turn be associated with cognitive impairment in T2DM. METHODS: A novel use of function-on-scalar regression, which allows the entire hemodynamic response curve to be modeled, was employed to assess the association between T2DM and hemodynamic responses to orthostasis. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between tissue saturation index (TSI), T2DM, and cognitive impairment. All analyses used cross-sectional data from Wave 3 of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). RESULTS: Of 2 984 older adults (aged 64.3 ± 8.0; 55% female), 189 (6.3%) had T2DM. T2DM was associated with many features that are indicative of autonomic dysfunction including a blunted peak heart rate and lower diastolic blood pressure. T2DM was associated with reduced TSI and also with greater odds of impaired performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (odds ratio [OR]: 1.62; confidence interval [CI: 1.07, 2.56]; p = .019). Greater TSI was associated with lower odds of impaired performance (OR: 0.90, CI [0.81-0.99]; p = .047). CONCLUSIONS: T2DM was associated with impaired peripheral and cerebral hemodynamic responses to active stand. Both T2DM and reduced cerebral perfusion were associated with impaired cognitive performance. Altered cerebral perfusion may represent an important mechanism linking T2DM and adverse brain health outcomes in older adults.

29. Evaluating the conservation status of Neotropical butterflies and the impact of systematics on threat assessments

Abstract

Most biological diversity is concentrated in the tropics and represented by insects, but threatened species programmes were created for and concentrate on vertebrates. Unfortunately, there is an impediment to the conservation of tropical insects resulting from issues with taxonomy, quality of data and resources available. Butterflies, among insects, are one of the most suitable organisms for conservation studies. The first goal of this research was to examine the feasibility of assessing the threat status of Neotropical butterflies using IUCN criteria. Recently, an index using Red List data has been developed by IUCN to evaluate trends in threats to hyper-diverse groups based on a random sample of species. IUCN Red List threat assessments were undertaken by collating available locality data from various sources and modelling species ranges using BIOCLIM within DIVA-GIS. Following this approach, 631 Neotropical butterfly species were selected from the sample of 1500 world species. Threat assessments were carried out for 336 species in three families from which suitable data were available, and a preliminary list of Key Biodiversity Areas for butterflies was identified. Distribution ranges were modelled, then compared to land use changes to evaluate habitat loss. A total of 23 butterfly species were categorised as Vulnerable and 3 Endangered, with the rest as Least Concern. Only 7.7% of species were found to be threatened, a relatively low proportion compared to other groups, but this seems likely to be an underestimate of the real threats facing this group. In order to explore this issue, a systematic review of the genus Splendeuptychia (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) was undertaken. This genus is polyphyletic and was found to comprise at least four genera of which that containing the type species of Splendeuptychia was studied further. Once unnamed taxa and several cryptic species were recognised, the number of species-level taxa in this group increased significantly, as did the number of threatened species because species with restricted ranges were taxonomically overlooked. This study highlights the importance of detailed systematic research to achieve effective biodiversity conservation.

Abstract

This paper is part of the Prelaunch status LFI papers published on JINST: http://www.iop.org/EJ/journal/-page=extra.proc5/1748-0221 Two continuous closed-cycle hydrogen Joule-Thomson (J-T) sorption coolers have been fabricated and assembled by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the European Space Agency (ESA) Planck mission. Each refrigerator has been designed to provide a total of ~ 1W of cooling power at two instrument interfaces: they directly cool the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) around 20K while providing a pre-cooling stage for a 4 K J-T mechanical refrigerator for the High Frequency Instrument (HFI). After sub-system level validation at JPL, the cryocoolers have been delivered to ESA in 2005. In this paper we present the results of the cryogenic qualification and test campaigns of the Nominal Unit on the flight model spacecraft performed at the CSL (Centre Spatial de Liege) facilities in 2008. Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects individuals across all racial and ethnic groups, yet rates of diagnosis are disproportionately higher for Black and Hispanic children. Caregivers of children with ASD experience significant stressors, which have been associated with parental strain, inadequate utilization of mental health services and lower quality of life. The family peer advocate (FPA) model has been utilized across service delivery systems to provide family-to-family support, facilitate engagement, and increase access to care. This study used a randomized controlled design to examine the efficacy of FPAs in a racially and ethnically diverse sample. Results demonstrate significantly increased knowledge of ASD and reduced levels of stress for caregivers who received the FPA intervention as compared to treatment as usual.

Abstract

We present EZ, a novel Current Deposition algorithm for particle-in-cell simulations, which calculates the current density field due to macro-particle motion within a time step by solving the electrodynamic continuity equation. Being a charge conserving hybridization of \textbf{E}sirkepov's method and \textbf{Z}igZag, we refer to it as ``EZ'' as shorthand for ``Esirkepov meets ZigZag''. EZ achieves the same level of charge conservation as the commonly used method by Esirkepov, yet reaches higher performance for macro-particle assignment-functions up to third-order. Key considerations of its implementation in PIConGPU, an open source, C++, performance portable, fully relativistic 3D3V particle-in-cell code, are outlined in addition to the detailed description of EZ along with remarks on its optimization and customization.

Abstract

The volume of data generated by exascale simulations requires scalable tools for analysis and visualization. Due to the relatively low I/O bandwidth of modern HPC systems, it is crucial to work as close as possible with simulated data via in situ approaches. In situ visualization provides insights into simulation data and, with the help of additional interactive analysis tools, can support the scientific discovery process at an early stage. Such in situ visualization tools need to be hardware-independent given the ever-increasing hardware diversity of modern supercomputers. We present a new in situ 3D vector field visualization algorithm for particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and performance evaluation of the solution developed at large-scale. We create a solution in a hardware-agnostic approach to support high throughput and interactive in situ processing on leadership class computing systems. To that end, we demonstrate performance portability on Summit’s and the Frontier’s pre-exascale testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility.
