Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
Writing a scientific article is a challenging task as it is a highly codified and specific genre, consequently proficiency in written communication is essential for effectively conveying research findings and ideas. In this article, we propose an original textual resource on the revision step of the writing process of scientific articles. This new dataset, called CASIMIR, contains the multiple revised versions of 15,646 scientific articles from OpenReview, along with their peer reviews. Pairs of consecutive versions of an article are aligned at sentence-level while keeping paragraph location information as metadata for supporting future revision studies at the discourse level. Each pair of revised sentences is enriched with automatically extracted edits and associated revision intention. To assess the initial quality on the dataset, we conducted a qualitative study of several state-of-the-art text revision approaches and compared various evaluation metrics. Our experiments led us to question the relevance of the current evaluation methods for the text revision task., Comment: Accepted at LREC-Coling 2024

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
Recent advances in pre-trained language modeling have facilitated significant progress across various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Word masking during model training constitutes a pivotal component of language modeling in architectures like BERT. However, the prevalent method of word masking relies on random selection, potentially disregarding domain-specific linguistic attributes. In this article, we introduce an innovative masking approach leveraging genre and topicality information to tailor language models to specialized domains. Our method incorporates a ranking process that prioritizes words based on their significance, subsequently guiding the masking procedure. Experiments conducted using continual pre-training within the legal domain have underscored the efficacy of our approach on the LegalGLUE benchmark in the English language. Pre-trained language models and code are freely available for use.

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
We propose a comprehensive study of one-stage elicitation techniques for querying a large pre-trained generative transformer (GPT-3.5-turbo) in the rhetorical role prediction task of legal cases. This task is known as requiring textual context to be addressed. Our study explores strategies such as zero-few shots, task specification with definitions and clarification of annotation ambiguities, textual context and reasoning with general prompts and specific questions. We show that the number of examples, the definition of labels, the presentation of the (labelled) textual context and specific questions about this context have a positive influence on the performance of the model. Given non-equivalent test set configurations, we observed that prompting with a few labelled examples from direct context can lead the model to a better performance than a supervised fined-tuned multi-class classifier based on the BERT encoder (weighted F1 score of = 72%). But there is still a gap to reach the performance of the best systems = 86%) in the LegalEval 2023 task which, on the other hand, require dedicated resources, architectures and training.

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
The legal domain is a vast and complex field that involves a considerable amount of text analysis, including laws, legal arguments, and legal opinions. Legal practitioners must analyze these texts to understand legal cases, research legal precedents, and prepare legal documents. The size of legal opinions continues to grow, making it increasingly challenging to develop a model that can accurately predict the rhetorical roles of legal opinions given their complexity and diversity. In this research paper, we propose a novel model architecture for automatically predicting rhetorical roles using pre-trained language models (PLMs) enhanced with knowledge of sentence position information within a document. Based on an annotated corpus from the LegalEval@SemEval2023 competition, we demonstrate that our approach requires fewer parameters, resulting in lower computational costs when compared to complex architectures employing a hierarchical model in a global-context, yet it achieves great performance. Moreover, we show that adding more attention to a hierarchical model based only on BERT in the local-context, along with incorporating sentence position information, enhances the results., Comment: Workshop on Automated Semantic Analysis of Information in Legal Text

Statistics - Methodology ,62 - Abstract
Gaussian Processes and the Kullback-Leibler divergence have been deeply studied in Statistics and Machine Learning. This paper marries these two concepts and introduce the local Kullback-Leibler divergence to learn about intervals where two Gaussian Processes differ the most. We address subtleties entailed in the estimation of local divergences and the corresponding interval of local maximum divergence as well. The estimation performance and the numerical efficiency of the proposed method are showcased via a Monte Carlo simulation study. In a medical research context, we assess the potential of the devised tools in the analysis of electrocardiogram signals., Comment: 13 pages; 6 figures

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
Writing a scientific article is a challenging task as it is a highly codified genre. Good writing skills are essential to properly convey ideas and results of research work. Since the majority of scientific articles are currently written in English, this exercise is all the more difficult for non-native English speakers as they additionally have to face language issues. This article aims to provide an overview of text revision in writing assistance in the scientific domain. We will examine the specificities of scientific writing, including the format and conventions commonly used in research articles. Additionally, this overview will explore the various types of writing assistance tools available for text revision. Despite the evolution of the technology behind these tools through the years, from rule-based approaches to deep neural-based ones, challenges still exist (tools' accessibility, limited consideration of the context, inexplicit use of discursive information, etc.), Comment: Published at 13th International Workshop on Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval 12 pages

Statistics - Methodology ,Mathematics - Functional Analysis - Abstract
Functional Time Series are sequences of dependent random elements taking values on some functional space. Most of the research on this domain is focused on producing a predictor able to forecast the value of the next function having observed a part of the sequence. For this, the Autoregresive Hilbertian process is a suitable framework. We address here the problem of constructing simultaneous predictive confidence bands for a stationary functional time series. The method is based on an entropy measure for stochastic processes, in particular functional time series. To construct predictive bands we use a functional bootstrap procedure that allow us to estimate the prediction law through the use of pseudo-predictions. Each pseudo-realisation is then projected into a space of finite dimension, associated to a functional basis. We use Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS) to represent the functions, considering then the basis associated to the reproducing kernel. Using a simple decision rule, we classify the points on the projected space among those belonging to the minimum entropy set and those that do not. We push back the minimum entropy set to the functional space and construct a band using the regularity property of the RKHS. The proposed methodology is illustrated through artificial and real-world data sets.

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
Building dialogue systems that naturally converse with humans is being an attractive and an active research domain. Multiple systems are being designed everyday and several datasets are being available. For this reason, it is being hard to keep an up-to-date state-of-the-art. In this work, we present the latest and most relevant retrieval-based dialogue systems and the available datasets used to build and evaluate them. We discuss their limitations and provide insights and guidelines for future work.

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
In this paper we present the first step in a larger series of experiments for the induction of predicate/argument structures. The structures that we are inducing are very similar to the conceptual structures that are used in Frame Semantics (such as FrameNet). Those structures are called messages and they were previously used in the context of a multi-document summarization system of evolving events. The series of experiments that we are proposing are essentially composed from two stages. In the first stage we are trying to extract a representative vocabulary of words. This vocabulary is later used in the second stage, during which we apply to it various clustering approaches in order to identify the clusters of predicates and arguments--or frames and semantic roles, to use the jargon of Frame Semantics. This paper presents in detail and evaluates the first stage.

- Abstract
During the current crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Wearable IoT (WIoT) health devices have become essential resources for remote monitoring of the main physiological signs affected by this disease. As well as sensors, microprocessor, and wireless communication elements are widely studied, the power supply unit has the same importance for the WIoT technology, since the autonomy of the system between recharges is of great importance. This letter presents the design of the power supply system of a WIoT device capable of monitoring oxygen saturation and body temperature, sending the collected data to an IoT platform. The supply system is based on a three-stage block consisting of a rechargeable battery, battery charge controller, and dc voltage converter. The power supply system is designed and implemented as a prototype in order to test performance and efficiency. The results show that the designed block provides a stable supply voltage avoiding energy losses, which makes it an efficient and rapidly developing system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases, being one of the main causes of mortality in the world population. Dermatoglyphics is used as an instrument for the discovery of certain biological aspects in different populations. OBJECTIVE. To recognize, by doing a systematic review, the relevance of dermatoglyphics as a means of finding diabetes mellitus. Methodology. Review of scientific literature in databases such as Sciencedirect, PubMed, Scopus and VHL, in which information was extracted after running the search equation with MESH terms. After that, they were revised to include those articles related to DM and dermatoglyphics. For the entire process, the PRISMA methodology was followed, evaluating the articles with the Cochrane bias scale and the level of evidence and recommendation with the SIGN scale. Results. After a review of 475 articles, eight articles were included, and when evaluated, five articles were classified as 2+ and three as 2-, with a level D recommendation. Conclusion. Dermatoglyphics is a useful tool as a means of detecting DM. However, it is necessary to carry out cohort studies to demonstrate this in different populations, such as the Colombian population. 70% of the reviewed articles show that the prediction of DM finding is effective. However, 30% of the investigations within this review do not consider it to be a sufficiently optimal tool to discover the pathology in the population., Introducción.

100% of people with Down syndrome have hypotonia or low muscle tone. This condition causes people with Down syndrome to have poor fine motor skills. Fine motor activities are those that mostly require a visual-manual relationship. For the rehabilitation of muscle tone, music has shown to have good results in the students of the AMADEUS Foundation. The purpose of the project is therefore to work and strengthen the fine motor skills of people with Down Syndrome at the AMADEUS Foundation through music through design.

Seasonal behaviour is an attribute of many viral diseases. Like other ‘winter’ RNA viruses, infections caused by the causative agent of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, appear to exhibit significant seasonal changes. Here we discuss the seasonal behaviour of COVID-19, emerging viral phenotypes, viral evolution, and how the mutational landscape of the virus affects the seasonal attributes of the disease. We propose that the multiple seasonal drivers behind infectious disease spread (and the spread of COVID-19 specifically) are in ‘trade-off’ relationships and can be better described within a framework of a ‘triangle of viral persistence’ modulated by the environment, physiology, and behaviour. This ‘trade-off’ exists as one trait cannot increase without a decrease in another. We also propose that molecular components of the virus can act as sensors of environment and physiology, and could represent molecular culprits of seasonality. We searched for flexible protein structures capable of being modulated by the environment and identified a galectin-like fold within the N-terminal domain of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 as a potential candidate. Tracking the prevalence of mutations in this structure resulted in the identification of a hemisphere-dependent seasonal pattern driven by mutational bursts. We propose that the galectin-like structure is a frequent target of mutations because it helps the virus evade or modulate the physiological responses of the host to further its spread and survival. The flexible regions of the N-terminal domain should now become a focus for mitigation through vaccines and therapeutics and for prediction and informed public health decision making.

COUPS d'etat ,DEPLOYMENT (Military strategy) ,UNITED States armed forces ,INTERNATIONAL relations - Abstract
The foundation of post–WWII US foreign policy is the deployment and maintenance of a vast network of overseas military deployments. While the external security implications of these deployments are better known, scholars have spent little time connecting deployments to the internal stability threat of a coup d'état. The deployment of service members overseas creates multiple pathways to decreasing the likelihood of coup attempts by both supporting the government and its security apparatus and decreasing the benefits of a successful attempt by coup d'état conspirators. Our analysis of coups from 1951 to 2019 demonstrates that the presence of US troops decreases the likelihood of a coup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
