In this study, we inspect and analyze the effect of Al implantation into AlN by conducting confocal microscopy on the ion implanted regions, before and after implantation, followed by an annealing step. The independent effect of annealing is studied in an unimplanted control region, which showed that annealing alone does not produce new emitters. We observed that point-like emitters are created in the implanted regions after annealing by tracking individual locations in a lithographically patterned sample. The newly created quantum emitters show anti-bunching under ambient conditions and are spectrally similar to the previously discovered emitters in as-grown AlN.

Split-vacancy color centers in diamond are promising solid state platforms for the implementation of photonic quantum technologies. These luminescent defects are commonly fabricated upon low energy ion implantation and subsequent thermal annealing. Their technological uptake will require the availability of reliable methods for the controlled, large scale production of localized individual photon emitters. This task is partially achieved by controlled ion implantation to introduce selected impurities in the host material, and requires the development of challenging beam focusing or collimation procedures coupled with single-ion detection techniques. We report on protocol for the direct optical activation of split-vacancy color centers in diamond via localized processing with continuous wave laser at mW optical powers. We demonstrate the activation of photoluminescent Mg- and Sn-related centers at both the ensemble and single-photon emitter level in ion-implanted, high-purity diamond crystals without further thermal processing. The proposed lithographic method enables the activation of individual color centers at specific positions of a large area sample by means of a relatively inexpensive equipment offering the real-time, in situ monitoring of the process., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Single-photon emitters (SPEs) within wide-bandgap materials represent an appealing platform for the development of single-photon sources operating at room temperatures. Group III- nitrides have previously been shown to host efficient SPEs which are attributed to deep energy levels within the large bandgap of the material, in a way that is similar to extensively investigated colour centres in diamond. Anti-bunched emission from defect centres within gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminium nitride (AlN) have been recently demonstrated. While such emitters are particularly interesting due to the compatibility of III-nitrides with cleanroom processes, the nature of such defects and the optimal conditions for forming them are not fully understood. Here, we investigate Al implantation on a commercial AlN epilayer through subsequent steps of thermal annealing and confocal microscopy measurements. We observe a fluence-dependent increase in the density of the emitters, resulting in creation of ensembles at the maximum implantation fluence. Annealing at 600 {\deg}C results in the optimal yield in SPEs formation at the maximum fluence, while a significant reduction in SPE density is observed at lower fluences. These findings suggest that the mechanism of vacancy formation plays a key role in the creation of the emitters, and open new perspectives in the defect engineering of SPEs in solid state., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising systems for quantum technologies, including quantum metrology and sensing. A promising strategy for the achievement of high sensitivity to external fields relies on the exploitation of large ensembles of NV centers, whose fabrication by ion implantation is upper limited by the amount of radiation damage introduced in the diamond lattice. In this works we demonstrate an approach to increase the density of NV centers upon the high-fluence implantation of MeV N2+ ions on a hot target substrate (>550 {\deg}C). Our results show that, with respect to room-temperature implantation, the high-temperature process increases the vacancy density threshold required for the irreversible conversion of diamond to a graphitic phase, thus enabling to achieve higher density ensembles. Furthermore, the formation efficiency of color centers was investigated on diamond substrates implanted at varying temperatures with MeV N2+ and Mg+ ions revealing that the formation efficiency of both NV centers and magnesium-vacancy (MgV) centers increases with the implantation temperature., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We consider a special class of framed links that arise from the hexatangle. Such links are introduced in [arXiv:0807.1677], which was also analyzed when the 3-manifold obtained after performing integral Dehn surgery on closed pure 3-braids is $S^3$. In the present paper, we analyze the symmetries of the hexatangle and give a list of Artin $n$-presentations for the trivial group. These presentations correspond to the double-branched covers of the hexatangle that produce $S^3$ after Dehn surgery. Also, using a result of Birman and Menasco (1994), we determine which closed pure $3$-braids are hyperbolic.

The recent demonstration of optically active telecom emitters makes silicon a compelling candidate for solid state quantum photonic platforms. Particularly fabrication of the G center has been demonstrated in carbon-rich silicon upon conventional thermal annealing. However, the high-yield controlled fabrication of these emitters at the wafer-scale still requires the identification of a suitable thermodynamic pathway enabling its activation following ion implantation. Here we demonstrate the efficient activation of G centers in high-purity silicon substrates upon ns pulsed laser annealing. The proposed method enables the non-invasive, localized activation of G centers by the supply of short non-stationary pulses, thus overcoming the limitations of conventional rapid thermal annealing related to the structural metastability of the emitters. A finite-element analysis highlights the strong non-stationarity of the technique, offering radically different defect-engineering capabilities with respect to conventional longer thermal treatments, paving the way to the direct and controlled fabrication of emitters embedded in integrated photonic circuits and waveguides.

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is a second-generation continuously operated, wide field-of-view, TeV gamma-ray observatory. The HAWC observatory and its analysis techniques build on experience of the Milagro experiment in using ground-based water Cherenkov detectors for gamma-ray astronomy. HAWC is located on the Sierra Negra volcano in M\'exico at an elevation of 4100 meters above sea level. The completed HAWC observatory principal detector (HAWC) consists of 300 closely spaced water Cherenkov detectors, each equipped with four photomultiplier tubes to provide timing and charge information to reconstruct the extensive air shower energy and arrival direction. The HAWC observatory has been optimized to observe transient and steady emission from sources of gamma rays within an energy range from several hundred GeV to several hundred TeV. However, most of the air showers detected are initiated by cosmic rays, allowing studies of cosmic rays also to be performed. Since the $\nu_\tau(\bar\nu_\tau) A_Z \to \tau^\mp X$ reaction is notoriously difficult to be directly measured, the information on the dynamics of this nuclear process should be extracted from the analysis of the energy and angular distributions of the tau decay visible products. These distributions depend on the components of the tau-polarization vector. We give, for the first time, the general expression for the outgoing hadron (pion or rho meson) energy and angular differential cross section for the sequential $\nu_\tau A_Z \to \tau^-(\pi^- \nu_\tau, \rho^-\nu_\tau) X$ and $\bar\nu_\tau A_Z \to \tau^+(\pi^+ \bar\nu_\tau, \rho^+ \bar\nu_\tau) X$ reactions. Though all possible nuclear reaction mechanisms contribute to the distribution, it may be possible to isolate/enhance one of them by implementing appropriate selection criteria. For the case of the quasi-elastic reaction off oxygen and neutrino energies below 6 GeV, we show that the pion distributions are sensitive to the details of the tau-polarization components. We find significant differences between the full calculation, where the longitudinal and transverse components of the tau polarization vector vary with the energy and the scattering angle of the produced tau, and the simplified scheme in which the polarizations are set to one and zero (respective asymptotic values in the high energy regime). In addition to its potential impact on neutrino oscillation analyses, this result can be used to further test different nuclear models, since these observables provide complementary information to that obtained by means of the inclusive nuclear weak charged-current differential cross section. We also study the effects on the cross section of the $W_4$, $W_5$ nuclear structure functions, which contributions are proportional to the charged lepton mass, and therefore difficult to constrain in muon and electron neutrino experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We study the $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega d\cos\theta_d) $, $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$ and $ d\Gamma_d /dE_d $ distributions, which are defined in terms of the visible energy and polar angle of the charged particle from the $\tau-$decay in $b\to c \tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi \nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ reactions. The first two contain information on the transverse tau-spin, tau-angular and tau-angular-spin asymmetries of the $H_b\to H_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ parent decay and, from a dynamical point of view, they are richer than the commonly used one, $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega dE_d) $, since the latter only depends on the tau longitudinal polarization. We pay attention to the deviations with respect to the predictions of the standard model (SM) for these new observables, considering new physics (NP) operators constructed using both right- and left-handed neutrino fields, within an effective field-theory approach. We present results for $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau)\bar\nu_\tau$ and $\bar B \to D^{(*)}\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ sequential decays and discuss their use to disentangle between different NP models. In this respect, we show that $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$, which should be measured with sufficiently good statistics, becomes quite useful, especially in the $\tau\to \pi \nu_\tau$ mode. The study carried out in this work could be of special relevance due to the recent LHCb measurement of the lepton flavor universality ratio ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$ in agreement with the SM. The experiment identified the $\tau$ using its hadron decay into $\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\nu_\tau$, and this result for ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$, which is in conflict with the phenomenology from the $b$-meson sector, needs confirmation from other tau reconstruction channels., Comment: 20 latex pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, presentation of figures 3 and 4 has changed, new comments and a new reference added

In the context of lepton flavor universality violation (LFUV) studies, we fully derive a general tensor formalism to investigate the role that left- and right-handed neutrino new-physics (NP) terms may have in $b\to c \tau\bar\nu_\tau$ transitions. We present, for several extensions of the Standard Model (SM), numerical results for the $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ semileptonic decay, which is expected to be measured with precision at the LHCb. This reaction can be a new source of experimental information that can help to confirm, or maybe rule out, LFUV presently seen in $\bar B$ meson decays. The present study analyzes observables that can help in distinguishing between different NP scenarios that otherwise provide very similar results for the branching ratios, which are our currently best hints for LFUV. Since the $\tau$ lepton is very short-lived, we consider three subsequent $\tau$-decay modes, two hadronic $\pi\nu_\tau$ and $\rho\nu_\tau$ and one leptonic $\mu\bar\nu_\mu\nu_\tau$, which have been previously studied for $\bar B\to D^{(*)}$ decays. Within the tensor formalism that we have developed in previous works, we re-obtain the expressions for the differential decay width written in terms of visible (experimentally accessible) variables of the massive particle created in the $\tau$ decay. There are seven different $\tau$ angular and spin asymmetries that are defined in this way and that can be extracted from experiment. In astronomical spectroscopy, optical fibres are abundantly used for multiplexing and decoupling the spectrograph from the telescope to provide stability in a controlled environment. However, fibres are less than perfect optical components and introduce complex effects that diminish the overall throughput, efficiency, and stability of the instrument. We present a novel numerical field propagation model that emulates the effects of modal noise, scrambling, and focal ratio degradation with a rigorous treatment of wave optics. We demonstrate that the simulation of the near- and far-field output of a fiber, injected into a ray-tracing model of the spectrograph, allows to assess performance at the detector level., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures. For a general $H_b\to H_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ decay we analyze the role of the $\tau$ polarization vector ${\cal P}^\mu$ in the context of lepton flavor universality violation studies. We use a general phenomenological approach that includes, in addition to the Standard Model (SM) contribution, vector, axial, scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor new physics (NP) terms which strength is governed by, complex in general, Wilson coefficients. We show that both in the laboratory frame, where the initial hadron is at rest, and in the center of mass of the two final leptons, a $\vec {\cal P}$ component perpendicular to the plane defined by the three-momenta of the final hadron and the $\tau$ lepton is only possible for complex Wilson coefficients, being a clear signal for physics beyond the SM as well as time reversal (or CP-symmetry) violation. We make specific evaluations of the different polarization vector components for the $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c$, $\bar B_c\to\eta_c,J/\psi$ and $\bar B\to D^{(*)}$ semileptonic decays, and describe NP effects in the complete two-dimensional space associated with the independent kinematic variables on which the polarization vector depends. We find that the detailed study of ${\cal P}^\mu$ has great potential to discriminate between different NP scenarios for $0^-\to 0^-$ decays, but also for $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c$ transitions. The effect of polyvalent molecular cations, such as spermine, on the condensation of DNA into very well-defined toroidal shapes have been well studied and understood. However, a great effort has been made trying to obtain similar condensed structures from either ssRNA or dsRNA, which the latter carries similar negative charge density as dsDNA, although it adopts a different helical form. But the analogous condensation of RNA molecules into well-defined structures has so far been elusive. In this work, we show that ssRNA molecules can easily be condensed into nanoring structures on a mice surface, where each nanoring structure is formed mostly by a single RNA molecule. The condensation occurs in a concentration range of different atomic cations, from monovalent to trivalent. The structures of the RNA nanorings on mica surfaces were oberved by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The samples were observed in tapping mode and were prepared by drop evaporation of a solution of RNA in the presence of one type of the different cations used. As far as we know, this is the first time that nanorings or any other well-defined condensed RNA structures have been reported. The RNA nanorings formation can be understood by an energy competition between the hydrogen bonding forming hairpin stems, weakened by the salts, and hairpin loops. This results may have an important biological relevance, since it has been proposed that RNA is the oldest genome coding molecule and the formation of these structures could have given it stability against degradation in primeval times. Even more, the nanoring structures could have the potential to be used as biosensors and functionalized nanodevices.

The detection of a super-Earth and three mini-Neptunes transiting the bright ($V$ = 9.2 mag) star HD 108236 (also known as TOI-1233) was recently reported on the basis of TESS and ground-based light curves. We perform a first characterisation of the HD 108236 planetary system through high-precision CHEOPS photometry and improve the transit ephemerides and system parameters. We characterise the host star through spectroscopic analysis and derive the radius with the infrared flux method. We constrain the stellar mass and age by combining the results obtained from two sets of stellar evolutionary tracks. We analyse the available TESS light curves and one CHEOPS transit light curve for each known planet in the system. We find that HD 108236 is a Sun-like star with $R_{\star}=0.877\pm0.008 R_{\odot}$, $M_{\star}=0.869^{+0.050}_{-0.048} M_{\odot}$, and an age of $6.7_{-5.1}^{+4.0}$ Gyr. We report the serendipitous detection of an additional planet, HD 108236 f, in one of the CHEOPS light curves. For this planet, the combined analysis of the TESS and CHEOPS light curves leads to a tentative orbital period of about 29.5 days. From the light curve analysis, we obtain radii of $1.615\pm0.051$, $2.071\pm0.052$, $2.539_{-0.065}^{+0.062}$, $3.083\pm0.052$, and $2.017_{-0.057}^{+0.052}$ $R_{\oplus}$ for planets HD 108236 b to HD 108236 f, respectively. These values are in agreement with previous TESS-based estimates, but with an improved precision of about a factor of two. We perform a stability analysis of the system, concluding that the planetary orbits most likely have eccentricities smaller than 0.1. We also employ a planetary atmospheric evolution framework to constrain the masses of the five planets, concluding that HD 108236 b and HD 108236 c should have an Earth-like density, while the outer planets should host a low mean molecular weight envelope., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

The CHEOPS space mission dedicated to exoplanet follow-up was launched in December 2019, equipped with the capacity to perform photometric measurements at the 20 ppm level. As CHEOPS carries out its observations in a broad optical passband, it can provide insights into the reflected light from exoplanets and constrain the short-wavelength thermal emission for the hottest of planets by observing occultations and phase curves. Here, we report the first CHEOPS observation of an occultation, namely, that of the hot Jupiter WASP-189b, a $M_P \approx 2 M_J$ planet orbiting an A-type star. We detected the occultation of WASP-189 b at high significance in individual measurements and derived an occultation depth of $dF = 87.9 \pm 4.3$ppm based on four occultations. We compared these measurements to model predictions and we find that they are consistent with an unreflective atmosphere heated to a temperature of $3435 \pm 27$K, when assuming inefficient heat redistribution. Furthermore, we present two transits of WASP-189b observed by CHEOPS. These transits have an asymmetric shape that we attribute to gravity darkening of the host star caused by its high rotation rate. We used these measurements to refine the planetary parameters, finding a $\sim25\%$ deeper transit compared to the discovery paper and updating the radius of WASP-189b to $1.619\pm0.021 R_J$. We further measured the projected orbital obliquity to be $\lambda = 86.4^{+2.9}_{-4.4}$deg, a value that is in good agreement with a previous measurement from spectroscopic observations, and derived a true obliquity of $\Psi = 85.4\pm4.3$deg. Finally, we provide reference values for the photometric precision attained by the CHEOPS satellite: for the V=6.6 mag star, and using a one-hour binning, we obtain a residual RMS between 10 and 17ppm on the individual light curves, and 5.7ppm when combining the four visits., Comment: In press at Astronomy and Astrophysics

We apply the general formalism derived in N. Penalva et al. [Phys. Rev. D 101, 113004 (2020)] to the semileptonic decay of pseudoscalar mesons containing a $b$ quark. While present $B\to D^{(*)}$ data give the strongest evidence in favor of lepton flavor universality violation, the observables that are normally considered are not able to distinguish between different new physics (NP) scenarios. In the above reference we discussed the relevant role that the various contributions to the double differential decay widths $d^2\Gamma/(d\omega d\cos\theta_\ell)$ and $d^2\Gamma/(d\omega dE_\ell)$ could play to this end. Here $\omega$ is the product of the two hadron four-velocities, $\theta_\ell$ is the angle made by the final lepton and final hadron three-momenta in the center of mass of the final two-lepton system, and $E_\ell$ is the final charged lepton energy in the laboratory system. The formalism was applied there to the analysis of the $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c$ semileptonic decay showing the new observables were able to tell apart different NP scenarios. Here we analyze the $\bar B_c\to \eta_c \tau\bar\nu_\tau$, $\bar B_c\to J/\psi\tau\bar\nu_\tau$, $\bar B\to D\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ and $\bar B\to D^*\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ semileptonic decays. We show that, as a general rule, the $\bar B_c \to J/\psi$ observables, even including $\tau$ polarization, are less optimal for distinguishing between NP scenarios than those obtained from $\bar B_c \to \eta_c$ decays, or those presented in N. Penalva et al. for the related $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c$ semileptonic decay. Finally, we show that $\bar B\to D$ and $\bar B_c\to \eta_c$, and $\bar B\to D^*$ and $\bar B_c\to J/\psi$ decay observables exhibit similar behaviors., Comment: 28 latex pages, 26 figures, 2 tables, a new reference added and a few misprints corrected

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported branching fractions for semileptonic decays of the $B$ meson into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions within the framework of a constituent quark model in two steps, one which involves a semileptonic decay and the other one mediated by a strong process. We extend our general framework for semileptonic decay, originally introduced in N. Penalva et al. [Phys. Rev. D100, 113007 (2019)], with the addition of new physics (NP) tensor terms. In this way, all the NP effective Hamiltonians that are considered in lepton flavour universality violation (LFUV) studies have now been included. Besides, we now also give general expressions that allow for complex Wilson coefficients. The scheme developed is totally general and it can be applied to any charged current semileptonic decay, involving any quark flavors or initial and final hadron states. We show that all the hadronic input, including NP effects, can be parametrized in terms of 16 Lorentz scalar structure functions. In the second part of this work, we use this formalism to obtain the complete NP effects in the $\Lambda_b\to \Lambda_c \tau\bar\nu_\tau$ semileptonic decay, where LFUV, if finally confirmed, is also expected to be seen. We stress the relevance of the center of mass (CM) $d^2\Gamma/(d\omega d\cos\theta_\ell)$ and laboratory (LAB) $d^2\Gamma/(d\omega dE_\ell)$ differential decay widths. While models with very different strengths in the NP terms give the same differential $d\Gamma/d\omega$ and total decay widths for this decay, they predict very different numerical results for some of the $\cos\theta_\ell$ and $E_\ell$ coefficient-functions that determine the above two distributions. Thus, the combined analysis of the CM $d^2\Gamma/(d\omega d\cos\theta_\ell)$ and LAB $d^2\Gamma/ (d\omega dE_\ell)$ differential decay widths will help clarifying what kind of NP is a better candidate in order to explain LFUV., Comment: 24 latex pages, 7 figures, 1 table.
