The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) concept appeared almost forty years ago, as a solution to overcome the limitations related to photovoltaic cell efficiency. Nowadays, they are seen as a promising approach to integrate photovoltaic elements into the built environment, in an invisible way and without detrimental effects to the aesthetics of the building or the quality of life of the inhabitants. LSCs are devices comprising a transparent matrix embedding optically active centers that absorb the incident radiation, which is re-emitted at a specific wavelength and transferred by total internal reflection to photovoltaic cells located at the edges of the matrix. During the last few decades, several optically active materials have been tested for LSCs in an endless quest for the most efficient device. Nowadays, one of the world's major concerns is the environmental impact of our choices. Thus, the present and future path for LSCs must include the search for nature-friendly materials, with little environmental impact, and, in this sense, this Perspective offers a general overview of the potential of environmentally-friendly materials for LSCs. The occurrence of the parasitic marine leech Stibarobdella moorei (Oka, 1910) (Hirudinea: Piscicolidae) along the northwest Mexican Pacific coast is described for the first time. This ectoparasite was collected from the skin of the Octopus bimaculatus (Verril, 1983) (Mollusca: Octopodidae). Stibarobdella loricata (Hardig, 1924) is synonymized with S. moorei as this species resembles other species of the genus based on tubercle patterns and the presence of papillae and a marginal fringe on the oral sucker. The present finding throws new light on the biodiversity and host preference of the ectoparasite and suggests a successful migration to unusual host. The coast of the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the Bay of Los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico is a new geographical distribution area for S. moorei, and O. bimaculatus is a new host reported for this leech. The morphology of this ectoparasite is briefly described.

A BEC-type zeolite (polymorph C of zeolite beta) with low germanium content (Si : Ge = 5.1) has been synthesised using the flexible linear diquaternary cationic form of pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (2,2′-(methylazanediyl)bis(N,N,N-trimethylethanammonium) as the organic structure-directing agent (SDA). The distribution of germanium within the framework and the location of the SDA within the pores have been determined by analysing synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data collected on the as-synthesised form. The findings, which are corroborated by 13C and 19F NMR data, indicate that the structure of the SDA is retained during the synthesis and that the Ge atoms occupy only sites in the double 4-ring. Although the BEC framework structure has a three-dimensional 12-ring channel system, the SDA molecules are found to orient themselves in two dimensions along the channels running parallel to the a and b axes. Two series of new photocatalysts were synthesized based on modification with Pd of the commercial P25 photocatalyst (EVONIK®). Two techniques were employed to incorporate Pd nanoparticles on the P25 surface: photodeposition (series Pd-P) and impregnation (series Pd-I). Both series were characterized in depth using a variety of instrumental techniques: BET, DRS, XRD, XPS, TEM, FTIR and FESEM. The modified series exhibited a significant change in pore size distribution, but no differences compared to the original P25 with respect to crystalline phase ratio or particle size were observed. The Pd0 oxidation state was predominant in the Pd-P series, while the presence of the Pd2+ oxidation state was additionally observed in the Pd-I series. The photoactivity tests were performed in a continuous photoreactor with the photocatalysts deposited, by dip-coating, on borosilicate glass plates. A total of 500 ppb of NO was used as input flow at a volumetric flow rate of 1.2 L·min−1, and different relative humidities from 0 to 65% were tested. The results obtained show that under UV-vis or Vis radiation, the presence of Pd nanoparticles favors NO removal independently of the Pd incorporation method employed and independently of the tested relative humidity conditions. This improvement seems to be related to the different interaction of the water with the surface of the photocatalysts in the presence or absence of Pd. It was found in the catalyst without Pd that disproportionation of NO2 is favored through its reaction with water, with faster surface saturation. In contrast, in the catalysts with Pd, disproportionation took place through nitro-chelates and adsorbed NO2 formed from the photocatalytic oxidation of the NO. This different mechanism explains the greater efficiency in NOx removal in the catalysts with Pd. Comparing the two series of catalysts with Pd, Pd-P and Pd-I, greater activity of the Pd-P series was observed under both UV-vis and Vis radiation. It was shown that the Pd0 oxidation state is responsible for this greater activity as the Pd-I series improves its activity in successive cycles due to a reduction in Pd2+ species during the photoactivity tests. The effect of initial plastic strain cycle fatigue lives of HSLA specimens is investigated. Specimens were monotonically, quasi-statically loaded under strain control in tension to produce plastic strains (prestrain conditions s0 = 0, s1 = 4,6, s2 = 35,6 and s3 = 66,7 % deformation). Surface analysis on the annealed Zn coat on the prestrain surfaces shows that, the higher the deformation the bigger and deeper the cracks on the Zn coat. Results show that the higher prestrain the higher fatigue resistance for all stress applied, specimens with s3 shows the highest fatigue resistance for these experimental conditions. Microstructural morphology of CoCrMo alloy by control of the cooling rate during the solidification was investigated. Samples were obtained using both an induction furnace for slow cooling rate and electric arc furnace for fast cooling rate. Microstructural characterizations were performed with metallographic techniques. It was found that the difference between the formation temperature of hard secondary phases of M23C6-type carbides determine the reduction of carbide size by increasing the cooling rate. Abstract: Fatty acid composition of cellular membranes can modify permeability and can modulate the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase. Although highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) improve survival and osmoregulatory capacity to low salinities in penaeid shrimp, the possible mechanisms have not been established. For this purpose the influence of HUFA supplementation in diet (2.9 vs. 34% HUFA proportion to total fatty acids) on osmoregulatory responses of juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei submitted to an acute (15 h) or chronic exposure (21 days), to low (5 g L−1) and high salinities (50 g L−1) was analyzed. Shrimp fed the high-HUFA diet, had higher concentration of main HUFA (20:5n −3 and 22:6n −3) in polar lipids of gills. Osmotic pressure in hemolymph was significantly affected by salinity in acute (640, 751, 847 mOsm/kg for 5, 30 and 50 g L−1, respectively), and chronic exposure (645, 713, 814 mOsm/kg), but variations between them were small compared to environmental salinity (206, 832, 1547 mOsm/kg), indicating that osmoregulation was achieved in a matter of hours. An increase in Na+/K+-ATPase activity was observed only after a chronic exposure to low salinity. Free amino acids (FAA), mainly alanine and arginine, were higher at 30 (control) and 50 g L−1 in accordance to their role as organic osmolites. Neither osmotic pressure, Na+/K+-ATPase activity, nor FAA was affected by HUFA supplementation. However, higher water content in gills of shrimp exposed to low salinities was counteracted by increased HUFA content, which could be a result of changes in water permeability of gills. The osmoregulatory capacity of penaeid shrimp to low and high salinities was achieved within 15 h of acclimation and did not depend on HUFA supplementation in the diet. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
