This study aims at characterizing the hydrodynamic context and transport patterns that prevailed during the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise to assist in the interpretation of in-situ observations. The main physical attributes and structures (mesoscale eddies as well as fine-scale fronts and filaments) are analyzed based on various physical diagnostics. They were computed from satellite data and data-assimilative model outputs to describe ocean dynamics. The Northern and Algerian Currents were prominent features during the cruise while the western basin is divided by the vertically-tilted Balearic front. Temperature and salinity were used to distinguish different water masses at both surface and sub-surface. Sea-level anomalies, relative vorticity, and Okubo-Weiss parameter distributions have shown the presence of marked eddies around stations St10 and St11. Furthermore, Finite-Size Lyaponuv Exponents revealed that the former was rather located on a fine-scale filament near the edge of a cyclonic eddy while the latter was closer to the core of an anticyclone. Nearshore thermal fronts were detected with the Belkin and O'Reilly Algorithm (BOA), especially around stations St17 and St19. The potential coastal sources of contaminants were tested using Lagrangian Origin Maps (LOM), suggesting that stations St1, St2, St4, St11, and St15 were most likely influenced by coastal waters. Additionally, an atmospheric reanalysis combined with a Lagrangian dispersal model allowed for estimating wet deposition events of contaminants while tracking the fate of water masses where rainfall took place. Finally, we provide a set of explanatory quantitative and qualitative variables for future statistical analyses that aim at explaining the distribution of both chemical and biological samples collected during the cruise.

Coastal circulation influences the distribution of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) at early life stages (ELS) in the Bay of Biscay (BoB). However, how this happens is not yet fully understood. In this work, further insight is provided by performing Lagrangian diagnostics based on observations of ELS anchovies' initial distributions and currents. Surface diagnostics were obtained by using high-frequency radar (HFR) currents and were applied to analyse multiyear variability and detect the coastal processes that affect the distribution. Since ELS anchovies are also located at subsurface levels, subsurface diagnostics were obtained by using currents reconstructed from HFR and ADCP observations with a reduced order optimal interpolation (ROOI) method. The analyses included transport computations as well as the analysis of flow properties by Lagrangian Coherent Structures and chlorophyll-a satellite images. Results suggest that ELS anchovies are mostly retained over the shelf and slope, and that transport patterns highly vary across different periods. Mesoscale structures such as eddies, fronts and along-slope currents within the slope and the Capbreton canyon area, as well as strong and persistent winds, could significantly impact the distribution of ELS anchovies. In some periods, the resulting distribution might be due to a combination of these processes. Circulation can also play a key role in ELS anchovy aggregation within short time scales (20 days). This work showcases the potential of observation-based approaches and emphasizes the relevance of coastal observatories for integrated studies.

In the Panama Bight, two different seasonal surface circulation patterns coincide with a strong mean sea level variation, as observed from 27 years of absolute dynamic topography (ADT) and the use of self-organizing maps. From January to April, a cyclonic gyre with a strong southwestward Panama Jet Surface Current (PJSC) dominates the basin circulation, forced by the Panama surface wind jet that also produces upwelling, reducing sea surface temperature (SST), increasing sea surface salinity (SSS) and causing an ADT decrease. From June to December, the Choco surface wind jet enhances SST, precipitation and river runoff, which reduces SSS, causing an ADT rise, which in turn forces a weak circulation in the bight, vanishing the PJSC. Interannual variability in the region is strongly affected by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO); however this climatic variability does not modify the seasonal circulation patterns in the Panama Bight. In contrast, the positive (negative) ENSO phase increases (decreases) SST and ADT in the Panama Bight, with a mean annual difference of 0.9g C and 9.6ĝ€¯cm, respectively, between the two conditions, while its effect on SSS is small. However, as the strong seasonal SST, SSS and ADT ranges are up to 2.2g C, 2.59ĝ€¯gĝ€¯kg-1 and 28.3ĝ€¯cm, the seasonal signal dominates over interannual variations in the bight.

We examine 20 years of monthly global ocean color data and modeling outputs of nutrients using self-organizing map (SOM) analysis to identify characteristic spatial and temporal patterns of high-nutrient low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions and their association with different climate modes. The global nitrate-to-chlorophyll ratio threshold of NO3:Chl>17 (mmolNO3mgChl-1) is estimated to be a good indicator of the distribution limit of this unproductive biome that, on average, covers 92×106km2 (∼25% of the ocean). The trends in satellite-derived surface chlorophyll (0.6±0.4%yr-1 to 2±0.4%yr-1) suggest that HNLC regions in polar and subpolar areas have experienced an increase in phytoplankton biomass over the last decades, but much of this variation, particularly in the Southern Ocean, is produced by a climate-driven transition in 2009-2010. Indeed, since 2010, the extent of the HNLC zones has decreased at the poles (up to 8%) and slightly increased at the Equator (<0.5%). Our study finds that chlorophyll variations in HNLC regions respond to major climate variability signals such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) at both short (2-4 years) and long (decadal) timescales. These results suggest global coupling in the functioning of distant biogeochemical regions.

We study the impact of the Ekman currents and Stokes drift on the surface horizontal transport and mixing properties of the Mediterranean Sea. Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents (FSLE) at the ocean surface are computed over the whole basin using 25 years of satellite altimetry derived geostrophic currents, 10-m wind velocity and wave fields. We find that the transport pathways unveiled by the geostrophic Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) are significantly modified by the ageostrophic currents (i.e., Ekman and Stokes induced velocities), often leading to a decrease of the retention capacity of the eddies. An exhaustive assessment of the regional and temporal variability of the FSLE shows an increase of the horizontal mixing processes, due to the ageostrophic component, up to 37% in regions such as the Gulf of Lion or the Aegean Sea, during the seasons where wind and waves are intense and persistent. Positive trends in the total FSLE (up to 1.2% of the value of FSLE per year in some regions) suggest that Mediterranean Sea has experienced a significant increase in the intensity of the mixing processes over the last decades. Ageostrophic features are considered to play a role in determining the properties of the relative dispersion. Through the analysis of the Lagrangian Anisotropy Index (LAI) using virtual and real pair of drifters, we observe that the particle dispersion is mainly dominated by the zonal flow, and that the ageostrophic currents induce meridional dispersion, particularly in regions where wind and wave are intensified.

[EN] We present the Terms of Reference for a case study on a Mediterranean eco-region focusing on the environmental component of the Ecosystem Report Card. The objective of this case study is to describe and monitor the variability of environmental processes in the Mediterranean Sea that affect the ecology of large pelagic fishes, with a particular attention on tunas, and the possible role of climate change on this variability. Mean wave energy flux (hereinafter WEF) is assessed in the Caribbean Sea from a 60-year (1958–2017) wave hindcast. We use a novel approach, based on neural networks, to identify coherent regions of WEF and their association with different climate patterns. This method allows for a better evaluation of the underlying dynamics behind seasonal and inter-annual WEF variability, including the effect induced by the latitudinal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the influence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. Results show regional differences in WEF variability likely due to both intensification and migration of the ITCZ. WEF exhibits a strong semi-seasonal signal in areas of the continental shelf, with maxima reached in January and June, in agreement with the known sea surface temperature and sea-level pressure variability patterns. At larger scales, WEF shows a significant correlation with the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI, which is the primary index for tracking the ocean part of ENSO climate pattern), depicting positive values in the central and western sides of the basin and negative ones at the eastern side.

Diatoms are among the most efficient autotrophic organisms for oceanic primary production and carbon sequestration. Yet, the spatial distributions of these planktonic organisms remain puzzling and the underlying physical processes poorly known, especially in oligotrophic open waters. Here we investigate what dynamical conditions are conducive to episodic diatom blooms in oceanic deserts based on Lagrangian diagnosis and satellite-derived phytoplankton functional types and currents. The coherence of the flow is diagnosed in space and time simultaneously through the Lagrangian coherence rate (LCR) to identify which dynamical structures favor diatom growth. Observations evidence that flow structures with high LCR (40 days or longer) in areas with elevated eddy kinetic energy and vorticity sustain high diatom concentrations in the sunlit layers. Our findings show that the integration of Eulerian kinematic variables into a Lagrangian frame reveals new dynamical aspects of geophysical turbulence and unveil their biological impacts

The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA), is considered one of the most productive areas of the world, with a high abundance of ecologically and economically important fish species. Yet, the biological responses of this complex region to climate variability are still uncertain. Here, using 24 years of satellite-derived Chl-a data, we classified the SWA into 9 spatially coherent regions based on the temporal variability of Chl-a concentration, as revealed by SOM (Self-Organizing Maps) analysis. These biogeographical regions were the basis of a regional trend analysis in phytoplankton biomass, phenological indices, and environmental forcing variations. A general positive trend in phytoplankton concentration was observed, especially in the highly productive areas of the northern shelf-break, where phytoplankton biomass has increased at a rate of up to 0.42 ± 0.04 mg m−3 per decade. Significant positive trends in sea surface temperature were observed in 4 of the 9 regions (0.08–0.26 °C decade−1) and shoaling of the mixing layer depth in 5 of the 9 regions (−1.50 to −3.36 m decade−1). In addition to the generally positive trend in Chl-a, the most conspicuous change in the phytoplankton temporal patterns in the SWA is a delay in the autumn bloom (between 15 ± 3 and 24 ± 6 days decade−1, depending on the region). The observed variations in phytoplankton phenology could be attributed to climate-induced ocean warming and extended stratification period. Our results provided further evidence of the impact of climate change on these highly productive waters.

Maximum monthly aggregate value of significant wave height for the Caribbean Sea from 1958 to 2017. The mean wave period, mean wave direction and the wind velocity (U10 and V10) related to the date of the maximum aggregation significant wave height value, are included in this dataset.

The extreme wave height distribution in the Caribbean Sea is studied using a new method based on the maximum basin-wide aggregate of significant wave height, Hs, values per month. Besides, by means of the Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) technique, we identify coherent geographical regions with similar extreme wave height variability in the Caribbean Sea. Our findings revealed three primary regions: the eastern side with comparatively lower values, the central region with intermediate values, and the western side with the highest extreme wave heights. The study also examines the wind forcing conditions driving the spatial and temporal variability of the extreme waves, highlighting the influence of the low-pressure belt dynamics as well as the role played by the Caribbean Low-Level Jet (CLLJ) index, and the impact of cold fronts and hurricanes on extreme wave heights. Additionally, we explore the relationship between the extreme wave height distribution and climatic indices, such as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the Atlantic Meridional Mode (AMM), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Oceanic Niño (ONI). The results reveal that the spatial distribution of extreme wave heights in the Caribbean Sea is mostly ruled by the influence of the CLLJ, with correlations close to 80%. In addition, significant correlations were observed between the extreme wave heights and the ENSO in the central Caribbean, as well as positive correlations between the extreme wave heights and NAO in the eastern part of the basin, and significant values of correlation with the negative phases of AMO and AMM in the whole basin. We show that, unlike conventional (or broadly used) methods deployed to identify extreme wave height, such as percentile 99th, (Formula presented.), our methodology allows a further assessment of the wind and climate forcing conditions associated with the extreme wave events. Understanding how the surface dynamics of the ocean influence the spawning and larval ecology of many large pelagic species, in particular tuna species, is a major challenge. For temperate tunas, the selection of geographically restricted spawning grounds is influenced by environmental conditions, but the influence of surface mixing properties on the early life stages of these species remains poorly understood. Here, based on ichthyoplankton samples collected over 4 yr and satellite-derived finite size Lyapunov exponents (FSLEs), we examined how horizontal mixing activity drives the probability of presence of Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus larvae. We further analyzed the spatial and temporal scales of the FSLE variability at which the relationship between larval presence and mesoscale activity is maximized. We found that moderate mixing activity strongly favors the spatial-temporal distribution of larval habitats, evidencing an optimal environmental window of bluefin tuna spawning and early life development within the meso scale dynamics. During the spawning season, the Balearic Sea presents a unique spatial and temporal hydrodynamic scenario within the Western Mediterranean. These results can be used for developing oceanographic indicators and improving larval abundance indices that are currently used in Atlantic bluefin tuna stock assessments.
